ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN NEONATAL NURSING ADNN 434/001
INTRODUCTION
The WHO states that considerable efforts have been made to ensure skilled birth attendance, with
the aim of reducing morbidity and mortality among mothers and newborns. These efforts have
substantially improved the number of births in health facilities, the proportion of deliveries
attended by skilled health personnel in developing countries have been increased.
The goal is to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Every pregnant
woman and newborn should have skilled care at birth with evidence based practices delivered in a
humane, respectful, supportive environment. Good quality care requires appropriate use of
effective clinical interventions, strengthened health infrastructure, optimum skills and a positive
attitude of health personnel.
Malaysia is a relatively young country with young population. The Ministry of Health regards
neonatal care and services as an important component of care which should be made available in
all Ministry of Health Hospitals and also at the level of community health care services.
Neonatal care services aim to provide diagnostic, curative and rehabilitative services for newborn
infants, optimize outcome of newborns of high risk pregnancies and to work with parents as
partners in the health care of their infants.
The neonatal nursing curriculum is tailor made to meet the demand of a newborn from birth till
discharge and to promote audit and research in neonatal care. The curriculum is designed using
outcome based education and interprofessional approach where the clinical experiences focus on
neonatal care. The curriculum has also addressed the key issues relating to core materials in
Neonatal nursing and the importance of theoretical knowledge, clinical competence, ethical, safe
and effective professional practice. These reflect a maturity in the quality of training for the nurses
that is in line with the aspiration and the endeavour of the Training Management Division Ministry
of Health Malaysia to achieve the highest quality training for their paramedics at all times.
