Discovering New Energies and Talents

‘Lockdown’ is a term that has often been heard in different versions in recent days. The
world has frequently used a few new vocabulary such as covid, pandemic, lockdown,
immunity, social distancing, etc. Human interaction and interconnectedness has taken a
new shape, so is teaching and learning. As jovially someone put it, the time when the
mobile phones were forbidden to be taken into the classroom have passed. The
classrooms have been taken into the mobile phones. More than ever, technology has
come to assist us in its full potency with all its features.
Being a college of engineering and technology, LICET has very well adapted itself to the
new challenges posed by covid-19. Faculty and students have managed to keep the
learning bond alive even in the time of uncertainty and difficulties. I am very much glad
and appreciate the amount of resilience and adaptability LICET has shown during this
pandemic state, without compromising with the quality in teaching and learning. Some of
you have gone out of the way to make this possible. I am happy to see various types of
teaching and learning activities carried out during this lockdown period. At the sametime,
I am also aware of the numerous constraints that each faculty and student has gone
through in terms of economical survival, staying healthy, taking care of loved ones, trying
to be in touch with others, etc.
Creativity has ‘infected’ the LICET family and everyone of us has become ‘positive’ in our
thought processes and actions. A student team has initiated ‘PATTARAI’; another has
developed a sophisticated attendance module; a team has developed a personal
information system for Chennai Jesuit Province; a number of students and faculty have
been instrumental in organizing webinars; many have attended webinars and online
courses to keep their learning curve progressing; teams have organized webinars for the
school kids; a students panel has addressed the FAQs of the aspiring student applicants;
a number of students have won competitions. The list seems unending. This report on
teaching and learning activities is to recognize you for all the efforts you had put and
capture all that you had done during this lockdown period. Against all odds, LICET has
raised its bar to the next level in the teaching and learning process.
Once again LICET has proved its capacity to adapt and to stay relevant in the new
normals. I congratulate and appreciate the faculty and students for all their achievements
and making LICET proud.

Collective Responses that redefined
teaching and learning

It gives me immense pleasure to mention about the contributions of our faculty members,
adapting to the new normal is enormous. The much-needed transition was spontaneous
and smooth, all because of the commitment and involvement of them. This booklet on
“Teaching-Learning and Academic Achievements” during the lockdown period is a
testimony to the same, explicitly stating the various activities and efforts taken related to
students engagement and their own personal development.
As teachers of today, this pandemic situation has taught us to unlearn many things and
learn many more. Taking online classes is challenging because, the delivery of the
content especially teaching the application of the concept learnt, is an uphill task in spite
of the availability of the content. Over a period, we have to identify the ways and means
to deliver the content effectively and also to ably interact with the students.
In this scenario, our faculty members have done a great job, re-skilling and up-skilling
themselves through webinars and FDPs. They quite managed the challenging situations
such as the need for compensating the advantages of teaching in social contact, learning
with less or no peer support, issues of digital divide along with managing their own
physical and mental pressures, taking care of students’ anxiety, mentoring etc. I
appreciate Mr. Emmanuel and Ms.Ann Christiana for their effort to bring out this booklet
with the guidance of the Vice Principal.

The novel coronavirus, since declared as pandemic, has impacted almost all sectors
globally and perhaps the most affected one is education. The scenario became worse at
the closure of the educational institutions since 24 th March 2020, for the fear of
spreading the virus. Many students and the parents lost their composure and were
anxious about the time lost during the COVID-19 lockdown. Teachers and students had no
hint on how to proceed further with teaching and learning. Some switched to the mode
of online teaching from conventional. LICET is one among those innovative institutions.
LICET did not wait for any miracle or instructions from any forum but the management
immediately convened the first virtual officials meeting, the very next day of the
lockdown i.e. 25 th March 2020 and discussed the students’ prospective on the lockdown
and decided to take advantage of the lockdown period for preparing e-content for online
teaching, research papers publication and starting online classes by the faculty and to
come up with new strategies in online teaching and learning.
Accordingly, faculty members started teaching immediately through online platforms to
complete the syllabus and conducted assessment tests for the first-year students.
Moreover, revision classes, model exams and project reviews were conducted for higher
semester students. It was not a cool job to connect with the students at that moment. But,
our faculty members took all possible efforts to connect with them and encouraged them
to do online courses through Coursera, NPTEL, Guvi and edX besides attending online
classes. Therefore, many students have done online courses enriching their knowledge
and honing their skills. It was heartening to see their course completion e- certificates
posted in their LinkedIn profile.
When I received an email on 31 st March 2020 from our Director Rev Dr Maria Wenisch SJ,
stating to collate all the documents of the teaching-learning and achievements of our
faculty members during the lockdown period to bring out a booklet, I envisaged it as a
simple job and shared a google form with all our faculty members and requested them to
enter their activities with proof regularly. It was amazing as well as encouraging to receive
a large number of responses from our faculty members that testified their eagerness
towards teaching and learning using technical skills. Their quick transformation, adapting
to the new normal is admirable and appreciable.

It is evident from this booklet that most of our faculty members have completed
certification courses offered by Coursera, Danfoss, CISCO, VMware, Amazon web
services, MathWorks and Great Lakes Academy. They have also attended Faculty
Development Programmes in their area of specialization and MOOCs organized by AICTE,
IIT Bombay, as well. Moreover, they have also participated sincerely in webinar sessions
conducted by ICT academy, NPTEL, Institution Innovation Council, IEEE and Ashrae.
Some have submitted their research papers to IEEE conference, international
conferences and reputed journals. A few have published their work in Taylor and Francis,
Springer and some of the Scopus indexed journals. They have also reviewed articles for
journals and conferences. I would also like to appreciate and acknowledge all the faculty
members for their commendable contribution to the student community especially
through mentoring during this lockdown period. Many have also developed their skills in
multiple areas and strengthened their profiles during this phase.
I am very grateful to our Rector and founder Director, Rev Dr Francis P Xavier for
connecting with the faculty members and sharing his immense knowledge through
webinars and messages during this pandemic. I am extremely thankful to our Director,
Rev Dr Maria Wenisch for the innovative suggestion of putting together all our efforts and
achievements as a booklet as well as encouraging the faculty members to utilize the
lockdown period well in teaching-learning.
I thank sincerely our Principal, Dr Antony Michael Raj L, for his support and motivation in
organizing institutional level and department level programs during this period of crisis.
My special thanks with appreciation to Ms Ann Christiana, AP/S&H and Mr Emmanuel,
