entities in their responses to the global health emergencies linked to COVID-19, which

Online Meetings:

Since the Covid-19 restriction started on March 23rd 2020, the work life in LICET has been
revolutionized. All meetings were organized through Google Meet. Officials’ meetings
were conducted on weekly basis, every Wednesday and HoDs meetings, every Friday.
During the official meetings many important points/ concerns/issues were discussed, and
decisions taken. It includes:

• Online teaching-learning strategy, Engaging faculty and staff during lockdown,
Research and Publication activities, Functioning of LICET post lock down: ‘The new
normal’, Preparedness of LICET premises to cater to the COVID pandemic as per the
government regulations, Physical presence of faculty and staff, Planning for the next
academic year, Subject allocation, Faculty Orientation Programme for the academic year
2020-21 etc.

• Discussion on the possibilities, ways and means, required technologies to conduct
online classes. Discussion also included various assessment methodologies that can be
adapted.

• Discussion on admission strategies and formalizing plan for online application
process.

• Discussion on Placement and training restructuring that includes details on office,
personnel, Policies and structures for the next academic year to strengthen the
placement activities.

REFLECTIONS ON EDTECH IN
THE COVID-DISRUPTED WORLD

The Covid-19 pandemic has cast a spell of uncertainty & perplexity on humanity. It has
unlocked the pandora’s box of trouble, leaving the world appalled with unprecedented
challenges. The realm of education is no exception to this gigantic crisis. Educators &
learners are faced with several hurdles that impede the continuance of knowledge
dissemination. Fortunately, technology offers the digital infrastructure needed for
seamless end-to-end experience in the process of imparting & assimilating
knowledge. Technological tools like Google Classroom, Google Meet, Zoom, Moodle, etc.,
have turned out to be the hotspots of education. The very same gadgets & gizmos
that were strictly prohibited from classrooms, have now turned into the ‘indispensable
virtual classroom’. While the tech-adept Gen-Z learners are all excited about the new
experience of learning online & meeting classmates through new platforms, the
faculty were initially quite apprehensive about how they would pull-off the
teaching-learning process effectively through this not-so-familiar mode. Nevertheless, over
the days, these apprehensions have almost waned out and both educators & learners
are at greater ease with the new norm. However, if education is all about knowledge &
skill, this unprecedented paradigm shift would be a welcome change. But the purpose of
education is ‘transformation of hearts & minds’. Well, teachers may not be infallible
storehouses of knowledge, but they are the ones that make learning come alive, instil
values & form young minds. With the hope that this new paradoxical normal isn’t here to
stay for long, we look to the dawn beyond, where life will return to normalcy &
technology would step back to its role of enriching it.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH ONLINE
CLASSES

This pandemic has made all of us to embrace the online classes as the best alternative. The
sudden shifts away from the classroom and the technology that has truly embedded into
our educational approaches are the new normal. With the typical rise of e-learning,
teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Collaboration platforms like
ZOOM and Google meet that support live-video communication have become common in
online teaching. Digital learning management systems (Moodle, google classroom) help
classes connect remotely and stay-organized. When I started teaching online, I attended
variety of virtual workshops, FDPs and online courses related to online teaching/design
that help me to use various tools to create a digital learning content.

I have an added advantage since I had taught the course before face-to-face and knew
what I wanted to cover and how. For me, the transition was easier, although it was forced
on me. I adapted quickly and even successfully completed the course- Electronic Devices,
online. That was a challenging time but the flexibility and creativity helped me complete the
course successfully. In the digital learning management system students can learn at their
own pace: going back and re-reading, skipping, or accelerating through concepts.
However, there are some challenges which need to be overcome. Some students struggle
without reliable internet access or/and little knowhow of technology. The general
consensus is that a congenial environment is required for the youngsters, as they are more
easily distracted. I use ZOOM app to have a direct interaction with my student. I can only
see the name of the student on the screen during the class, when I present but I can't
even see what they doing. As a faculty, I feel that online classes have improved my
teaching skills like preparation, getting feedback, using methods and tools to engage the
students, and evaluation methods. My teaching style also has changed a lot as feedback
from the students helps me to understand their thinking process and understanding level.
More than everything my experience with online classes has improved my learning
experience.

The spirit of LICET which I always have admired right from my student days till now as a
faculty is the marching might to handle any situations. The bold decisions taken by the

running are commendable. The message from LICET to everyone is very clear. “Come what

faculty and the student communities to accept changes and to adapt to the new normal,
made me feel proud. One instance, I would like to mention here is about The Covid
Chronicles, the special edition of Licetronicles during the lock down. Even amidst uncertain
social conditions LICET students proved that there is no lockdown for their creative spirit
and their quest for knowledge. Every letter and the art forms portrayed in The Covid
Chronicles stand as a testimony. Thanks to Licetronicles team for their constant support
and contribution. The array of trainings, webinars, FDPs and knowledge sessions
empowered me to create educational contents with a touch of professionalism. I am ever
grateful for the dissemination of knowledge through various means.

PROACTIVE DIGITAL TEACHING –
A THOUGHT BYTE

Life has been abruptly altered as the entire world experiences a life threatening pandemic,
Covid-19. It affected not just our lives, but the lives of millions of teachers around the globe.
With a contagious virus out of leash, classroom teaching was deemed no longer safe. All
teaching and learning had to be online. Teaching analytical topics in such a way to reach
the students effectively, through online lectures seems to be ostensibly elusive.
Having shared the recorded presentation videos through google classroom, reviews were
awaited from the students to know if the concepts were comprehensible. Surprisingly there
was lot of appreciation and have even expressed their gratitude for the time and effort.
Later, I had live online sessions to revise all the units. I had to start the first unit which is
analytical. I figured out the method to teach the problem-solving session online. Then I
decided to prepare a presentation which methodically explains the steps for the solution.
Viewing my presentation and the screen of the students was sorted out through
connecting with two devices. During the session, I had the necessity to check my
secondary device to clarify any doubts. To reaffirm their understanding, a short quiz was
organized at the end of each topic. A google site for my subject was created which was
well appreciated by the students. Teaching online course can actually be an opportunity to
offer a more engaging, interactive experience for our students if the planning is done
effectively. Teaching online made me a Proactive Digital Teacher.

REVIEW ON THE ONLINE CLASSES

During this pandemic, many efforts were taken to reach out to the students to each the
subjects through Google meet. Students were punctual and interacted well during the
online classes. Even though the classes were online, the spirit with which it was taught
earlier was never missed. Regular assignments were given to the students after each class
or lesson which eventually helped students to have a better understanding of what they
learnt. Unit tests were also conducted the following week which helped them in better
retention. I kept a schedule and followed up with students and reached everyone. The
internet problem was the only issue faced by the students. Students were holding seminars
which helped them in better understanding. Notes and study materials were shared in
drives which proved to be useful to them. Quizzes were conducted using google forms. The
submission of answer sheets was made easy using google classrooms. Even though the
experience was new to students they overcame this situation with ease. This way of
teaching helped them to have a new experience of digital platform. Overall the online
classes were useful and helped them to cope with the subjects and they had the luxury of
having classes at any time of their choice.

ADAPTING TO THE NEW NORMAL

Initially the online classes were conducted for I Mech-B in “Engineering Mechanics” during
lockdown period by sharing the lecture videos to the students. However, the students
could not clarify their doubts and the faculty member couldn’t verify whether the students
understood the topic or not. Then classes were conducted in Google meet and 80 %
students participated actively. Students having doubts posted them in the chat box, which
were cleared in the middle or at the end of the session. The lecture notes is provided by the
faculty as soft copy through WhatsApp/mail. Almost 2 – 2.5 units of the syllabus was
covered through online class. After covering the syllabus, revision classes and tests were
conducted on alternative weeks. CAT -2, Model exam, revision tests in five units and one
objective type quiz were conducted in the online mode. As online class is the only option
available during this pandemic period, students quickly adapted to the ‘New Normal’,
realizing the current scenario. In the same time we have faced shortcomings in online class.
Students without LICET email id, need to be admitted individually through their personal
mail id. This causes a slight delay in starting the class. Students who do not have gadgets
with internet connection are not able to attend the class. Further they get disconnected in
between due to poor net connectivity and likely to miss out that portion when they return
back to the class. Assessing students’ performance is also a challenge, since the faculty
member can’t verify the genuineness of the answer scripts. If the subject involves diagrams
and numerical calculations, the effectiveness of learning using mobile phone needs to be
thought-out. Also, the faculty member can’t monitor inattentive students In the traditional
classes, students have the opportunity to clear doubts through peer learning which is not
possible online.

Practising problems in an online class is limited, due to which students may find difficulty at
the end of the semester. Conducting test, collecting the answer scripts, evaluating scripts
and returning the corrected answer scripts to the students involve more effort and time in
online mode. However, we have to adapt to the new way of teaching and improve the
quality of it by being innovative.

FEEDBACK ON TEACHING THROUGH
ONLINE PLATFORM

Covid 19, has caught us unaware and we are ill prepared for the challenges in front of us.
How adeptly we adapt to the situation is the need of the hour. Though the first two weeks
were taken easy expecting normalcy to return soon, we had to push ourselves to do
something to carry forward the job of educating our students, as there was no end in sight.
Emergency Remote Teaching came in handy to continue imparting knowledge to the
student community. It was indeed a struggle for me trying to figure out technology, not
being a tech-savvy. Thanks to many educational institutions that thoughtfully offered FDPs
& webinars on teaching tools to equip the teaching fraternity to rise to the occasion.
It helped me to get familiar with remote teaching tools and the encouragement and help
from the HoD of my department gave confidence.
However, the satisfaction of teaching in the traditional classroom with the cues from the
body language of the students was lacking in online platform. The enthusiasm while
teaching face to face was not to be felt in an online atmosphere. Connectivity is a major
concern. Videos of students couldn’t be turned on due to bandwidth problem. The
advantage of a pat and a shout is absent in online classes. While, students who have
internal motivation take advantage of remote teaching, the ones who need goad and prod
constantly, have become very lethargic and listless. Preparation for synchronized and
asynchronized classes is extensive and demanding. But how many will make the best of
those lectures, painstakingly delivered is a question. As always, any new endeavor will
have initial hiccups which settles down as days go by. Let’s hope for the best.

ONLINE PLACEMENT TRAINING
SESSION

It was an initiative of the LICET Placement cell to help the students, learn the basics and
core concepts of programming as the general feedback from the Industry is that our
students are good at communication and aptitude but not at coding. Besides, only few
students of batch 2021 were able to clear EXAMLY test. So the students were trained
during the lockdown period. Initially meetings were conducted during April – May 2020
with the placement coordinators, Industry Interaction Committee and our Alumni who work
at SAP to plan this company specific training. Though there was a plan to include all the
students opting for placement from all the five departments, we decided to take up ECE,
CSE and IT students since SAP interview was in the pipe line.
It was indeed a big challenge to teach them through online mode, as it has all along been
taught by explaining the code snippets using a programming language through hands-on
or chalk and board method. PPTs with mathematical demonstrations, algorithms and
Pseudocode based on tiny scriptlets using C language were prepared to train them. Apart
from this, grouping the students and making them to attend the session were also a
challenge. Here our placement coordinators of each department pitched in and eased the
difficulty faced. Few students were unable to connect since they were in remote places and
had network problem. In order to help everyone attend the training, timings were made
convenient to them. Around 12 sessions handled by both Ms Sharmila, AP/CSE and Ms.
Anitha AP/ IT were attended by 50 to 60 students. After few sessions, though there arose
a situation to discontinue the training due to career-a-thon, students requested to continue
with it, which motivated the faculty to carry on. Without any iota of doubt this training has
instilled basic knowledge of coding in the students.

NEW-NORMAL LEARNING
EXPERIENCE

When the lockdown was imposed, we were chased out of our colleges and forced to stay
inside our houses. It made us uncertain about our academic programs. But our teachers did
not let this situation last for a long time. Amazingly, within a very short period, they came
up with a well-planned timetable for the online classes as a ‘new-normal’ teaching program.
It made us glad and gave us confidence. At first, all those topics which were not covered in
the classroom were discussed and all others which were already covered were revised.
Enough study materials and previous year question papers were shared to make our
learning smarter.
Periodical tests were conducted on each unit on alternative weeks. MCQ tests were also
provided to make the topics crystal clear though it is not the part of our university pattern.
We were kept engaged with online classes and never felt like we were away from our
college or missing our teachers and classmates. We were able to interact with our teachers
and clarify our doubts. Thanks to the management for taking great efforts to convert the
crisis into a great opportunity of learning!

EMBRACING THE NEW NORMAL

“If life were predictable it would cease to be life, and be without flavor”, this holds true of
the sudden turn of events we face. This lockdown had indeed affected me emotionally.
Imagine from being a care free hosteller to setting up desk for online classes with the
dilemma whether the exams would be conducted or not? This lockdown had indeed halted
the day to day routine and changed the lifestyle of everyone.
Online classes, a new way of digital learning from the comfort and security of our home
was made possible with the help of technical tools such as Google Classroom and Zoom.
They made it possible connecting with faculty and fellow students virtually while social
distancing has become the new norm, thus enabling the learning process. This new step
filled us with a sense of newness and happiness being connected as we continued our
journey to learn and explore more.
The usages of Moodle learning system served its purpose of being a single portal where
one could submit assignments, take quizzes, access the lecture videos, read through the
e-books and check their track record.
“Education is not mere memorization of facts but of understanding values”. These efforts
by the LICET fraternity had instilled a sense of confidence that we would move on no
matter what the odds be. I take this opportunity to thank the management and the faculty
for being generous taking up hardships, sparing their family time for our betterment. I
firmly believe that these small steps in the right direction can turn out to be the biggest
step of our life. Let’s believe that these difficult roads will lead to a beautiful destination.

BEACONING INTERACTIONS AND
INSIGHTFUL MOTIVATIONS

The pandemic has definitely hit us unexpectedly at the most crucial time and we the final
year students are the worst hit. We do not have any updates on our final semester exams;
when it will happen or whether it will happen anytime soon. But regular information from
the class advisors via possible communication streams has kept things on perspective and
helped me personally concentrate on the tasks at hand.
Regular meetings with our project guides on project updates really gave us ideas on what
needs to be done with regard to our project particularly the tasks to be done with regard
to it.

The online reviews on our project also helped us understand where we needed to improve
in terms of presentation and gave us a better picture of what to expect in the final review.
These interactions also motivated us to publish our project as paper in international journal
and this process helped us to have a better insight into how to proceed in the right
direction for the same.
I want to thank all the professors who took time to make sure that all of these could
progress as it should even during these tough times. It is really appreciated!

MY EXPERIENCE OF ONLINE CLASSES

Due to COVID-19 pandemic we are forced to stay home to avoid communal outbreak,
though some refuse to stay at home. So online classes are the only way to teach students
and to keep them engaged with their lessons. I studied half of my semester through online
classes. Online classes provided a way to interact with my friends and teachers. At the
beginning it was difficult to understand the virtual platforms like Google meet, Zoom
meetings and MOODLE LMS. After few classes I learnt to use it well. Some of the worst part
is poor internet connection, charge being run out of my device and other technical issues
which sever the connectivity, and then I have to rejoin the class. In the process of joining I
missed some of the parts of my class. My friends often tell me that, they ran out of daily
mobile data.
When it comes to tests and assignments, we have to write it in papers and scan it using a
scanner application, which takes more time and tedious to crop it accordingly. I got my
doubts clarified by my faculty through mail or WhatsApp. Certainly online class cannot
replace the good old classrooms where we interacted lively. The bright side of online class
is that I learnt something other than my academics like how to use various technologies
available that I haven’t heard of before the beginning of my online class. Ultimately I learnt
that Change is the only thing that is unchangeable in this world.
