QUESTION ANALYSIS: HOTS Evaluating
19 In paragraph 2, the phrase fighting for his country means?
A He was fighting the Vietnam army in his country.
B He was fighting against Vietnam as United States army.
C He was one of the Vietnam army to fight for their country.
D He was fighting for Vietnam and United States of America.
A is not the answer since Frank was assigned to Vietnam after being drafted to the army and
the war did not happen in the United States.
C is not the answer as we know he was an American and was drafted into the USA army.
D is not the answer because in the text, Vietnam and the USA were fighting against each
other.
ANSWER : B
He is from the United States which means that he is a United States army and was sent to
Vietnam to fight against them.
20 In paragraph 3, why were the parents tragically lonesome? HOTS Understanding
A They were shocked to hear news about Frank.
B They had accepted the situation and went on living.
C They received a call from Frank after four weeks.
D They found it hard to cope life after Frank was gone.
A, B and C are not the answer as being shocked, accepting the situation and receiving a call
from Frank does not explain or even has the closest meaning to being tragically lonesome.
ANSWER : D
To answer this question, a candidate has to know the meaning of the word ‘lonesome’. The
meaning of the word is ‘feeling sad and alone or lonely.’
When Frank was in college and even after being drafted to the army, the Creighton were still
be able to receive news from him. However, when they were informed about Frank’s presumed
death, they knew that, there would be no more calls and letters to wait for and it was something
that they won’t be able to deal with. The sudden loss of their son created a state that resembled
loneliness and emptiness.
21 In paragraph 4, why was Mrs. Creighton elated? HOTS Analysing
A She had been found and is coming home.
B She had received a telegram from the army.
C Her son had been found and is coming home.
D Her son had received a call from the army.
A is not the answer as the pronoun ‘she’ means Mrs. Creighton and in the story, Mrs.
Creighton has never been missing.
B is not the answer as she , Mrs. Creighton never received a telegram in Paragraph 4.
D is not the answer as no one had gotten a call from the army in Paragraph 4.
ANSWER : B
To answer this question, candidate has to know the word ‘elated’. The meaning of the word is
‘very happy and excite’.
In paragraph 2, we learned that Frank was pronounced dead, and both Frank’s parents found
it hard to cope with their life without Frank. But after four weeks of receiving the news of their
son’s death, they had gotten a phone call from Frank himself. In paragraph 4, Frank was the
only person who mentioned that he was going home soon. The incident had made Frank’s
mother who answered the phone feel very happy to know that his son was still alive and would
go home soon.
22 In paragraph 5, it has been mentioned that he wasn’t as HOTS Evaluating
fortunate as some. Who was the person?
A Mrs. Creighton’s son.
B Franks’s friend.
C Mr. Creighton.
D Frank’s dad.
B is not the answer even though he said that he is describing his unnamed friend, but the
truth is, he is describing about himself.
C and D is the same person, that is Frank’s dad or we can also call him Mr. Creighton, but the
answer we are looking for is Frank himself. .
ANSWER : A
To answer this question, candidate has to know how Frank is connected to all of the characters
in the story.
Since the description of the person is meant for Frank, the only answer that shows the person
is Frank is A. Thus, candidate can refer back to the first paragraph where it has been mentioned
that ‘the Creightons were very proud of their son, Frank.’ The Creighton can also be known as
Mr or Mrs. Creighton, and the choice of answer for the Creighton is only left for Mrs.
Creighton’s son.
23 How long was Frank missing before the army presumed HOTS Remembering
him dead?
A One week.
B Two weeks.
C Three weeks.
D Four weeks.
ANSWER : C
The answer is clearly stated in Paragraph 2, ‘At the end of the third week a telegram came,
saying, “We regret to inform you that you son has been missing for three weeks and is
presumed to have been killed in action while fighting for his country.’
24 Mrs. Creighton hesitated on Frank’s request. Why was she HOTS Evaluating
uncertain about her son’s wish?
A She was worried about how the rest of the family will react to the situation.
B She wondered how to cope with a cripple in their home.
C She felt apprehensive about how others would accept her condition.
D She was not sure of the idea on meeting and having Frank staying for a while.
A is not the answer as Mrs. Creighton’s worries expands throughout the town and not just
within the house.
C is not the answer as nothing had happened to Mrs. Creighton that she should be worried
about.
D is not the answer as Mrs. Creighton had problem with Frank’s problem with Frank’s friend
and not Frank.
ANSWER : B
To answer is clearly stated in Paragraph 9, ‘She began to wonder how things would work out
with a cripple at home.’
25 What was the reason Frank took his own life? HOTS Analysing
A Frank hesitated to accept his cripple friend.
B Frank’s mother was ashamed of Frank’s condition.
C Frank’s mother was worried about how the people in his town would think of him.
D Frank thought his parents would be ashamed of him.
A is not the answer as Frank did not have a cripple friend.
B and C is not the answer as Mrs. Creighton had no idea about Frank’s condition.
ANSWER : A
To answer this question, candidate needs to understand Frank’s situation and how his mother
reacted to his request. When Mrs. Creighton (seemed to) refused Frank’s request, Frank would
definitely feel unwanted and useless, this might be the reason for his suicide.
26 What might be the Creighton’s feeling when they see their HOTS Evaluating
son’s body?
A Melancholy.
B Fatigued.
C Sympathy.
D Remorseful
A is not the answer as the meaning of the word ‘melancholy’ is sad and unhappy.
B is not the answer as the meaning of the word ‘fatigue’ is extremely tired.
C is not the answer as the meaning of the word ‘sympathy’ is (an expression of)
understanding and care for someone else’s suffering.
ANSWER : D
The word ‘remorseful’ means feeling sad and guilty. The Creighton’s was sad because their
son killed himself and Mrs. Creighton felt guilty because she then knew that the crippled friend
that her son was talking about was actually her son himself.
Part 3
You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D)
and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.
Born as Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, India, Nana Patekar as he is known today, is a simple man with
minimum needs and a heart of gold which is a rare feat to achieve these days. He is a bright man with a point of view,
who speaks his mind and is brutally honest while expressing his opinions on and off camera. His incredible work in
Bollywood can never be forgotten or replaced simply because actors of his calibre are a rare phenomenon.
Nana Patekar, known for his simple lifestyle, has been generous in donating to charities. His generosity comes
from his experiences in life. When he was just 13, his family went from being middle class to lower middle class and
finally lower class, as someone close to his father took away everything he had including his property. With his
family facing dire financial problems, Nana had to start working at the age of 13. After school, he would walk eight
kilometres to Chunabhatti to paint film posters to make 35 rupees per month. He only got a meal a day.
The humiliation and hunger taught him so much that he did not need to go to any acting school. He had to be
the sole breadwinner as his father had lost everything. Nana’s father was always worried and depressed that eventually
he had a heart attack and died when his son was 28. His father’s parting left a gaping hole in his heart.
Though he was deprived of many things as a teenager, he was rather happy as he wanted to see his parents
happy and not worry about him. Despite having to start working at a young age, he did enjoy it. He used to like sweets
so much at that time, but since he could not afford them then, till today, he does not eat sweets. He used to go to his
friends’ houses at lunch time or dinner time, hoping that they would offer him food.
He has been a part of numerous incredible movies. He has carried out splendid and extra-ordinary
performances in films like Parindaa, Krantiveer, Apharan, Ab tak Chappan and many others and his work has been
aptly recognized time and again for which he has been awarded and nominated quite a number of times. An actor of
his grandeur is expected to be rude, ruthless, over-confident and self-centred. However, Nana Patekar is a gem of a
person, the exact opposite of what his fans expect him to be.
He has had his ups-and-downs and now he stands like a rock supporting others and his other philanthropic
works. He contributed money towards rebuilding the flood-ravaged villages in Bihar through a charitable
organization, Anubhuthi. A humble and down-to-earth man whose house is only 750 square feet, he donated all the
monetary remuneration he obtained for his performance in the movie Paathshaala to five different charitable
organisations. His foundation has also managed to collect Rs22 million for the welfare of the farmers, which aims
to fill dried lakes and rivers with clean drinking water for the community. Using a Twitter campaign with the hashtag
I care I support, Nana Patekar was able to obtain funds to help Maharashtra drought victims. He also provided
financial aid to families of farmers who committed suicide due to indebtedness brought about by drought. He
distributed cheques worth Rs 15,000 to 62 families of farmers from Vidarbha region in August 2015 and another 113
families from Latur and Osmanabad districts of Marathwada in September 2015.
Explaining why he does what he does and his dedication towards the cause, he confessed, “Marte dum tak
jeenay ki wajah mil gai hai mujhe,” which translates to “I have found a reason to live till I die.”

Be A Wise Shopper
Do you consider yourself to be a wise shopper? In order to be labelled as a wise shopper,
you must not be influenced by advertisements in the mass media such as the television, radio,
newspapers, and magazines. Have you noticed that advertisements only show the positive side of
a product without revealing the shortcomings? Does this mean that the product being advertised
does not have any disadvantages?
Advertisements in fact can be very misleading and consumers often tricked into buying
products. For example, to promote a certain brand of shampoo, an attractive girl with long, shiny
hair is shown on television. One is led to believe that by using that particular brand, one will have
similar beautiful hair. (1)_______ As a wise shopper, you should compile or make a list of
necessary items you wish to buy before going shopping. (2)_______ Without a list, you will be
tempted to buy the items on sale and hence end up buying unnecessary items. You will not only
end up with unnecessary things but also spend a lot of money.
Furthermore, it is a good habit to compare prices in shops. By doing this, you will know
where to get what you want to buy at the cheapest price. This practice is particularly useful for big
families since they buy in large quantities. (3)_______
Be careful when you buy things during a sale. Don’t be fooled! You know your prices first
before you buy anything at a sale. (4)_______ Also, many goods during sales are old or rejects.
Make sure you check the goods carefully before buying.
(5)________ Ensure that tins are not dented or damaged. The expiry dates should be well
ahead of time. This will enable you to use the products for some time in the future. Goods that can
last a long time can be brought in large quantities. (6)________ This is especially true if you have
a big family. Buying in bulk will save your money and it will not go to waste.
By following the above steps, I hope you will be wise shoppers and spend your money wisely.
A It is cheaper to buy in bulk.
B Different people have different ideas.
C This will help you to buy only what is required.
D Only then will you know if the sale is genuine or not.
E You will not be able to save much.
F Another good habit is to check the quality and expiry dates of goods.
G It is also good for those on a tight budget.

Video Games
Children today spend hours in front of the television playing video games. Video games
were first introduced in the 1970s, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that they became popular. 27
_____ If we take a look at some of the games available, we will see that many of them have
violence as the underlying theme. According to experts, these games allow children to be
destructive without fear of being reprimanded. Recent psychological experiments have shown
that playing these violent games can stimulate some degree of cruelty in children and adults. It
increases aggressive behaviour. Another effect of the violence in these video games is that it
can lead children to violence. 28 ______
However, not everyone views video games negatively. Some people believe that it is
better for a child to actively play video games rather than to passively watch television. 29
____ Some video games contain educational values. Some programmes are designed to allow
children to explore different places or environments while others are developed to teach and
drill specific facts or academic skills.
As a leisure activity, playing such games can be fun, challenging, exciting and it is also
a part of a ‘kid’s world’. When children own a PC or a video game system, it creates
opportunities for them to invite their friends to play, therefore enhancing or establishing
friendships. 30 _____ Thus, it is important for parents to draw the line. Instead, they should
spend more time with their children by playing outdoor games or go for some leisure activities.
Besides, parents should set the example of instilling in themselves the habit of reading. This
will enable their children to be interested in reading. Moreover, they should not use video
games as babysitters. 31 ______ Parents and professionals should also seek creative ways to
increase the acceptance, popularity and availability of games that are relatively pro-social,
educational and fun.
In recent years, computer games have attracted much attention. 32 _____ Thus, the
potential effects should be looked into.
(Adapted from www.englishdaily626.com)
A Some professionals claim that by playing video games, certain children can
develop a sense of proficiency which they might not otherwise achieve.
B They can stay indoors watching television rather than hanging out with their
friends outdoors.
C There have been questions raised on whether computer games have had negative
effects on children or whether society has overreacted.
D It can give them the idea that violence is an acceptable way to deal with problems and
conflict.
E A recent study shows that the two most preferred categories are games that involve
martial arts and sports.
F While playing video games is fun, it can be addictive.
G Children are used to think that violence is part of their daily lives.
H This is because, as parents are busy these days, they expose their children to such
video games to keep their children occupied.

We interviewed six teenagers about the occupation that they want to choose when they grow up. Read
the texts and answer the questions that follow.
Sought-after Occupations Among Teenagers
A – Aliyah, 17 years old
I want to be a doctor when I grow up. To me, health is above everything else in the world. The
satisfaction of saving lives and restoring patients’ health goes far beyond the feeling of other
achievements. Despite the long and gruelling hours of work in the filed of medicine, I know my life
will be happier when I can put a big smile on the patient’s and the family members’ faces.
B – Nelson, 15 years old
I want to be a teacher when I grow up. As a teacher, I can make a difference in the lives of many
students. I want to make students work harder than they think they could. I can make a C+ feel like
a congressional medal of honour for some students but an A- feel like a slap in the face for other
students. Nonetheless, in addition to teaching content, a teacher has to prepare and update students’
performance indicators on a regular basis. The excessive paperwork might make it difficult for
teachers to have a work-life balance.
C – Henrianus, 16 years old
I want to be an entrepreneur when I grow up. I want a lifestyle that is not bound to nine to five. For
me, the prospect of working an average job is not as rewarding and aspiring as a successful
entrepreneur. Although building a successful business takes a lot of time and risks, I am willing to
bite the bullet. As the old adage goes, entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most
people won’t so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t. I believe
entrepreneurship will allow me to achieve financial success and freedom one day in future.
D – Avinash, 14 years old
I want to be an electrical engineer when I grow up. I have always been fascinated by electrical systems
and machinery since small. Good electrical engineers need a variety of skills to excel in their roles.
For example, electrical engineers need to have problem-solving skills so that they can solve complex
problems while troubleshooting failed products. Besides that, they must be decisive as they need to
make firm and informed decisions about their products.
E – Ker Yee, 17 years old
I want to be a lawyer when I grow up. Being a lawyer, I will have the chance to use my legal skills
to help people, animals and the environment. Lawyers can also enjoy flexibility in their job. For
example, lawyers can set their own fees, choose their working hours and select clients they want to
work with. However, this profession has zero tolerance for mistakes as a mistake might cost a client’s
millions of dollars or freedom.
F – Nur Fazleen, 15 years old
I want to be a musician when I grow up. I prefer a job that is relaxing and entertaining at the same
time, so being a musician is just the perfect job for me. Studies show that playing a musical instrument
on a regular basis helps lower stress. Apparently, music also can lower the heart rate and blood
pressure, too.

Questions 33-40
Below are six questions to ask before buying gemstones. Read the texts below and answer the
questions that follow.
A.Is calibrating your computer important?
Yes, as no two people recognize colour in the same way, and you could say the same about
computer monitors! A colour corrected monitor will at least ensure that you are seeing the
same colours as those in the photograph of the gemstone. Check the brightness and contrast as
well as the gamma range.
B. What are the Four Cs of this diamond?
The obvious place to start with any diamond is the Four Cs, also known as cut, clarity, colour
and carat weight. The salesperson should be able to offer information in all four categories
and, crucially, explain why this matters. Just telling you a diamond solitaire is an F colour
isn’t helpful without context, explanation and possibly comparison to other stones.
C.Where does this coloured gemstone originate from?
Some retailers and designer brands will be able to tell you exactly where a gemstone has
originated from, A consumer, expects a retailer to have had conversations about gemstone
origin with their suppliers and to pass that information on to you unlike diamonds, gemstones
doesn't have a fixed Kimberley Process-type scheme in place and there are a number of
'stages' from mine-to-market, including sorting, cutting, polishing and finishing. A gemstone
may have journeyed to many parts of the world before ending up in a finished jewellery piece.
D.What factors make this coloured gemstone a good choice for me?
Buying a piece of fine gemstone jewellery should be enjoyable and it is important that the
piece you choose reflects your personality and tastes. A salesperson should be able to discuss
the particulars of a gemstone, such as its colour, clarity, any visible inclusions, as well as
broader factors like whether it is a particular birthstone. Choosing the ‘ideal’ gemstone is
more subjective than choosing a diamond, so be prepared to follow your instincts.
E. Does the website offer a 30 day inspection period ?
What if the gemstone that you purchased does not meet your expectations? It can be difficult
to get an idea of actual size when you are looking at an enlarged photograph on a screen. A
wide window on returns gives you adequate time to send something back if need be.
F. How should I care for my gemstone or diamond jewellery piece?
Make sure to find out what cleaning techniques are suitable for your gems before leaving the
store. Some gem materials are heat sensitive, some like pearls and amber can react badly to
commercial cleaners, and others are damaged by ultrasonic cleaning. Ask the right questions
and get accurate information before taking a chance.
