Subject : Holiday plans

Hi Norina,
Good to know that you’re settling down. Believe me, it’d be a great pleasure to be your
personal guide. Sabah has so much to offer.

We can go to the famous Kinabalu National Park to chill off the heat you are bringing
from Penang. Just joking. There is so much to see besides the cool temperate climate. It’s full
of panoramic views such as the majestic Mount Kinabalu and Desa Cattle Farm to begin with.
Next, we can visit the Poring Hotspring with its lush tropical forest as its natural setting.

Kota Kinabalu not only has spectacular scenic views, you can get to enjoy vast array
of good dishes and cuisine. I can assure you, it’s certainly a worthwhile trip. Besides, we have
so much to catch up.

Looking forward to the time you come to visit. Bye

I think you should go hiking because you both love the outdoors. It will also be a good way

for you to spend time alone . You always talked about going to Bukit Janggut with your
brother. Why don’t you do that? You’ll need quite a few hours to get there and back. I think

that will be a great place for both of you. You can do hiking, have a day trip and take lots of

Writing: Part 2
You must answer this question. Write your answer in 125 – 150 words in an appropriate style.

Question 2
Your class has been discussing the importance of friendship. You have to write an essay about
how you perceive friendship.

In your essay, you should write about:

● what a real friend means to you
● why we need friends
● how we should treat our friends

Write your essay using all the notes and give reasons for your point of view.

Suggested Answer

WRITING PART 2

What is a real friend? A real friend is the one who walks in when the whole world walks out.
A real friend is the one who hates getting wet but will definitely go through the storm with you. A
real friend is the one who is always close to your heart even if you are thousands of miles apart.

Friends are important in our life. As the old Chinese saying goes, friends are the mirror in
our life. In other words, true friends will give us a reality check. They will bring the harsh truth in
front of us so that we will not repeat the same mistakes in the future. For example, a real friend
will not hesitate to point out the flaws in our personality so that we can be a better person in the
long run.

We should treat our friends like how we would like to be treated. First, we should accept our
friends for who they are. We need to realize the fact that no one is perfect in this world. Hence, we
have to be tolerant when conflicts happen. After all, a real friendship is the one that can withstand
the ups and downs in life. In addition, we must respect the privacy of our friends. There are things
that we can share with others and there are things that we should keep to ourselves. As a result, we
must not force our friends to share their secrets with us if they are uncomfortable with it. In brief,
real friends are the people who love us as much as our family members. Therefore, we must
appreciate them in our life.

Teenage shopping in the 21st century

How many hours do you spend looking at new gadgets and games you want to buy in
your local electronics shop? It seems to be the one place we can’t keep away from!

On most Saturday mornings, you can find groups of young people looking at new types
of technology. Many of us want to see the latest phones and find out about apps for
downloading music, social networking and other forms of entertainment. Others are
choosing one of the hundreds of new computer games or looking at the prices of iPads
and the wide range of mini computers.

Why is this kind of shopping so important to us? I think the main reason is technology
gives us independence. Teenagers can now organise their lives themselves using
their own equipment. In the old days, young people often had to turn their music down,
change the TV channel or stop using the family telephone so much. Now, we can chat
to friends and keep up with the latest gossip and news of play music whenever we
want.

That’s worth shopping around for, isn’t it?

Question 2

Your class has been discussing about cleanliness and responsibility and your teacher has
asked you to write an essay on whether you agree that students should be involved in
cleaning up school regularly.

In your essay, you should write about:

● whether you agree or disagree
● points to support your opinion
● advantages of your opinion

Write your essay using all the notes.

18

Suggested answer

Cleanliness is important in school. Students nowadays rarely care about school cleanliness. They
do not think it is their responsibility to maintain cleanliness in school. I agree that students should be
involved in cleaning up school regularly.

Cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility. Every student should learn about how to clean and
maintain cleanliness. They should be responsible for cleaning regularly so that they understand the
importance of keeping school area clean. They may find that it is hard to do at first, but it will make them
learn.

Additionally, many reports received from the school administration have revealed that students
are the one who litter and make the school areas dirty with rubbish. This shows that the students’ attitude
is the main reason for the difficulty to maintain cleanliness. Thus, by making students clean the school
regularly, they will learn the hardship in cleaning and learn to not do it again in the future.

Another reason is school is a place to nurture good habit. Keeping the surrounding clean is an
important element in our lives, so it is a good practice to teach students to clean the school area. Some
students are not being taught how to sweep the floor or recycle their trash at home, so this is a great
opportunities for them to learn.

Lastly, the reason why students should involve in cleaning regularly is cleanliness is everyone’s
responsibility. No one is exempted from this. If students do not know how to clean, then they should be
educate on ways to clean so that when they grow up, they are able to do the cleaning work themselves.
After all, it can be fun to clean the school together with other students.

Thus, students are responsible in keeping cleanliness in school and by involving in the cleaning
work regularly, they will learn to keep the school clean and free from trash.

Sports and games are crucial part of a student’s growth and development. They help in the
development of mental and physical fitness of the body. The school is well equipped with many sports
facilities which include badminton, football, hockey, netball and other indoor games. The school not only
aims to improve students’ physical abilities but also instill a spirit of good sportsmanship.

Sports and games are essential as they help to boost the physical and mental well-being of a student.
Sports and games played between teams in a friendly competitive environment ensures that the students
remain active and fit. Outdoor sports such as football, basketball, jogging and swimming keep the body
and mind active. It also strengthens the immunity system of the body and energizes them.

Sports and games also develop the life skills of a student’s personality. It also helps in developing
social skills and getting along with other people. Besides, constructive use of time and discipline are
instilled. A student who is involved in sports and games must be patient and disciplined which will enable
him or her to achieve his or her goals.

The type of sport which might benefit me is volleyball. This game does not require body contact, so
for a petite person like me, it would not be a problem. Moreover, volleyball improves hand-eye
coordination and balance. It also teaches teamwork and communication, which is a good social activity.

My Ideal School Library
By Emilia Barrett

The library is a place people go to to relax, study and read good books. Here are a few suggestions
that I think would make our school library the ideal library for all.

Firstly, our library could have a wider variety of books. Many teens nowadays love reading genres
such as science fiction as well as thrillers and fantasy. Personally I would like to see more crime
and mystery on the bookshelves as I think those make for amazing reads. Filling our bookshelves
with the current bestsellers would definitely be a plus point as students can read them without
having to buy them from bookshops.

The facilities at the library could be improved as well. Beanbags could be provided as they are
really comfortable to sit on. Lockers should be provided for students to put their bags and personal
belongings so that they do not need to lug their heavy bags around. Apart from that, study cubicles
would definitely be appreciated by those who are looking for a quiet and private place to study.

One way to make the library more student-friendly is by extending the opening hours so that
students who come early to school or go home late in the evening can have a comfortable and safe
place to go to. Providing free wifi is also one way to make the library student-friendly as students
can go online to study or do research for their projects.

I look forward to a new and improved school library where students will flock to at every given
opportunity.

MODEL ESSAY ANSWER

“Man of Steel” by director Zack Snyder is a Hollywood blockbuster released in 2013 that
tells a story of one of the most famous superheroes ever : ‘Superman’.

Superman’s story starts on his native planet Krypton. His home world is under the threat
of destruction because of its leaders, who want to mine the resources out of the planet’s core. The
only one who is aware of the upcoming alert is a scientist and Superman’s father Jor-El. He
implants something called the Codex into his son’s body, and sends him to Earth. The Codex
makes Kal-El—or Superman “invincible”; he can only be killed with kryptonite. This film is about
Good triumphing over Evil .

The film has great cinematography combined with special effects making it very
entertaining . Furthermore, the actor Henry Cavill is tall and good looking, making him a perfect
fit for the role of “Superman”. Moreover, the cinematic sound effect makes a great combination
overall .

However, having watched many previous Superman adaptations , I am surprise that in this
film, Clark was not shown to be in any romantic scene with his crush , so hopefully in the next
film ,we could see Clark rescuing a beautiful damsel in distress as seen in other versions.

I would highly recommend “Man of Steel”, especially for anyone who is very keen on
action films. It will have you on the edge of your seat until the very end and I am sure you will not
regret watching it.

My First Experience

Saturday dawned bright and early. The sun shone majestically in the sky, promising a good
day. Immediately after my family’s departure to visit my distant aunt in the next town, I called
Jim over. In our quest for some extra pocket money, we had decided to babysit our neighbours’

kids for the day. At first, it sounded crazy as we had no experience, but soon the idea set in and

we started distributing fliers to every household in our neighbourhood on Friday. How difficult

could it be?
We sat at my doorstep, waiting patiently for our `customers’. Seconds turned to minutes.

Minutes turned to an hour. Then as the clock struck 8, one by one our `customers’ arrived. We
had expected around four to five of our neighbours’ kids, but more than ten, ranging from two to

ten years old, showed up.

At first, everything went as planned. They were little angels doing what they were told

and playing with whatever was given. Soon, as the hours ticked by, things started to get out of

hand. Some started to cry. Some were hungry. Some soiled themselves. The older ones got into

a fight. One or two went missing! The whole house was in chaos mode - children running up and

down, screaming, shouting, crying, breaking things, spilling things, and any other possible

accidents you could think of. Jim and I rushed around cleaning, wiping, washing, shooing, and

shouting. We were stressed out. The whole day whirled by as we worked our butts off. Neither

of us had a break.

It was when the clock in the hallway struck four that we finally got them to sleep. We both

collapsed into the couch for our very late lunch. By five, parents trickled in to pick up their little

darlings, handing in our fee. It was five when the house was finally quiet. Standing wide-eyed
in the middle of the living room, we surveyed the ‘damage’ - crumbs and poop on the carpet, vomit

stains on the couch, a broken vase, finger-stains on the walls, up-turned furniture, and toys strewn

everywhere. We got our extra pocket money alright, but was it really worth it?

Ten Years after the Covid-19 Pandemic

The sound of birds chirping and the clear air that fills my lungs suddenly remind me that this is
the dawn of a new era. It is actually mid-week but I do not feel the usual rush of adrenalin nor hear
the irritating sound of car horns. In fact, I can hardly see any vehicles on the road.

This is the year 2030, ten years since the outbreak of Covid-19. So much has changed, and so
much has been lost in a course of a decade. Relationships in all aspect have become so much
stronger because people have learned to respect one another. This change only came about after
half of the world’s population was wiped out by the pandemic. People just woke up one day and
realised that life matters. Making big profits and pushing for the heights of excellence are no
longer the focal points. Surviving is the only thing on everyone’s mind.

When Covid-19 struck, I was in form five, preparing to sit for my Malaysia Education Certificate.
Now, I am 27, a working adult with my own family and monthly bills to take care of. The economy
is gradually picking up but we are not out of the woods yet. Fortunately, human beings are resilient
creatures. Nothing will break us as long as we stay positive. As Helen Keller once said, keep your
face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow. That shall be my coping mechanism – staying
positive in the face of adversity.

Writing guide:

● Write the title in the essay
● Write in 200 – 250 words
● Use appropriate style – an introductory paragraph, body paragraph(s) and a concluding

paragraph

There are numerous kinds of essays you may be asked to write. Sometimes, it can be hard to
understand the difference between a narrative essay and a descriptive one. For this essay, it is both
a narrative and descriptive essay.

The main purpose of a narrative essay is to tell the reader about events, interactions, and experience
that have happened, are happening or may happen to the author during the particular period of
time. Therefore, you must read the question carefully and decide on the correct tenses to use –
past, present or future tenses.

On the contrary, descriptive essay is aimed at providing an image of a person, place, some
experience or an object without demonstrating a chain of events. The plot is absent or vague. In
other words, a descriptive essay is full of details and sensory language – words that link readers to
the five senses: touch, sight, sound, smell and taste.

As this essay is a narrative cum descriptive essay, you need to combine both the elements in your
writing.
