“ Editor’s Note Rtn Roxana
EDITOR
Welcome to the first annual magazine for RCKK Rtn Adora
Pearl. As our club is still in its infancy and some CO-EDITOR
of our members are still acquainting themselves Rtn Joanna
with the philosophy of Rotary, our President
Datuk Noni wanted to educate our members to understand
the benefits of being a Rotarian and how each of us can
change the world. This end of year magazine serves not only
to highlight the spectacular efforts taken by each member of
RCKK Pearl as a Rotarian but as to a reference point to when
one is in need of a reminder of the Rotarian Philosophy.

My hardworking editorial team Rtn Adora and Rtn Joanna
has compiled, collected and researched tirelessly to bring you
the first edition of The Pearl. Special thanks to a Rotarian in
the making Cerys Selina, who had endured countless hours
lending her talents to the graphics of the magazine.

We truly hope you enjoy recounting our Rotary
journey for the Rotary Year 2016/2017!”

Yours in Rotary,

President Datuk Noni Said

I hold my term as President very close to my heart as during this year, the Pearls became sisters and
our plans became a reality. From the meetings, to the fellowship and to the projects we did throughout
the course of my term , each day meant something different and something dear to me. Because of
this, I chose to document all our accomplishments in one final publication so we can all be reminded of the
difference we made, not only in our own lives but also on those whom we helped.

This end of year magazine also works as a reference book to all of us, as a reminder of the roles and function
we play in this colossal institution called Rotary. I hope each and everyone of the Pearls will reminisce and pat
yourselves on the back for all that we have accomplished together.

I also wish to congratulate Roxana, the magazine chair and her committee for successfully producing
this first maiden magazine of RCKK PEARL simply named PEARL.

MESSAGES| Message by
DG Micheal Yee 3310

T his is a time when clubs around the district will celebrate their annual installation
dinners. This gives me an opportunity to share with you some reflections on
giving since Rotary is about service to the less fortunate, the underprivileged, the
sick, the hungry, and the suffering people around us. Many Rotarians live comfortable
lives in marked contrast to the people whom we render service. Are we able and are we
willing to offer ourselves in service to these people even more than we have always been?

You may ask: how could we give more? My answer to you would be: do you
have a generosity plan? In other words, are you a philanthropist? Don’t be taken aback
by this seemingly forbidding word, apparently reserved for extremely wealthy people like
Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Philanthropy in its original Greek simply means “love of
humankind.” A common dictionary definition is “the practice of giving money and time
to help make life better for other people”.

So, that’s it. Philanthropy is an egalitarian term and a philanthropist can be from the rich or from the masses. And
philanthropy involves not only the giving of money but also the giving of time and talent—to help make life better for other
people. All it asks of you is to act in the interest of others, to render help whenever needed, to mentor others, or simply to share
credit where it’s due.

The generosity plan asks that all Rotarians give something of their time, talent, and treasure. We can give as much as
we can but all that is asked of you is affordable giving—not giving till it hurts but giving that creates value and transforms the
lives of the people we serve. There is a time to give and a time to receive. The generosity plan allows you to give and receive in
equal measure since most of life isn’t a zero-sum game. When we give of our time, talent, and treasure, we reap the rewards of
seeing the joy of families we’ve helped and bask in the light of the radiant faces of people we’ve touched. The act of generosity
nourishes and blesses both giver and receiver.

What are you doing today that can make a difference to the world? It’s impossible for a single person to solve all the
world’s problems but you can make a difference to the life of that person or family whom you’ve given this “love of humankind.”
The giver label is not just for those larger-than-life heroes such as Mother Teresa or Mahatma Gandhi but also is for common
folks like you and me.

Are you content just to be a spectator and let the world pass by with inaction? Or are you willing to step forward and
become an actor and make a difference to the world? As Rotarians and as leaders, we’ve being given a unique opportunity—to
change people’s lives, to create lasting value through service, to live and give generously for the “love of humankind.”

In the second century of The Rotary Foundation, let all Rotarians become philanthropists—doing good in the world
and generously giving to those in need. Your giving will spread and cascade to other Rotary clubs and Rotarians, generating
a ripple effect that will make an even greater difference to the world. Let us stay connected to whatever cause we’re pursuing,
doing all we can, each according to his or her abilities—and help shape a better world.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a
basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST
The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND
High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the
worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s

occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD

The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business,
and community life;
FOURTH

The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace
through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in

the ideal of service

ROTARY KNOWLEDGE|

The Four Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for
Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has
been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club

meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Avenues of Service

We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service,
which are the foundation of club activity.

Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong
relationships and an active membership development plan.

Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their
expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in An Introduction to Vocational

Service and the Code of Conduct.
Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for

people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in Communities in
Action: A Guide to Effective Projects.

International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding.
We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects,
seeking partners abroad, and more.
Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals
through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.

The concept of vocational service is rooted in the Second Object, which
calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”:

• High ethical standards in business and profession.
• The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations.
• The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society.

What action can a Vocational Service Director do?

Host a classification talk at your next club meeting. These presentations give members the
chance to learn the inner workings of jobs other than their own and can plant the seeds for professional
networking opportunities. The talks are also useful for introducing guests and prospective members
to your club.

Organize tours of members’ workplaces. Members who find public speaking difficult might
prefer to conduct a workplace tour rather than give a classification talk. If logistics can be worked out,
schedule an occasional meeting in a member’s place of employment.

Join or form a Rotary Fellowship related to your vocation. Rotary Fellowships are international
associations of Rotarians, Rotarians’ spouses, and Rotaractors who share a recreational or vocational
interest. There are vocational fellowships for doctors, law enforcement officers, editors, and members
of other professions. Learn more at www.rotary.org/fellowships.
