SIGNIFICANCE OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Technical education in our country is growing tremendously in tune with the advancements in
the various fields of science and technology. In this context, engineering institutions have a
huge responsibility in producing competent and readily employable graduates with good
communication skills, who would experience a smooth transition from the class room learning
to corporate environment. Good communication skills are incredibly important and
something that almost anybody can improve upon, both in writing and speaking. A relatively
modest improvement can make a major difference in the professional career as well as in
many other aspects of life. Apart from the knowledge they gain in the prescribed curricular
courses in Technical English and Communication skills laboratory, students should spend
some time in reading books on English literature by great authors and listen to the
articulation of good speakers. They should also come forward to take part in oratorical
competitions and debating clubs organized by the institution to gain confidence and
proficiency in the language. Motivating students to read materials which are not connected
to their stream of study is the task of the teacher teaching professional courses. Committed
teachers and enthusiastic students interacting with mutual trust and love can create a vibrant
ambience conducive for ensuring excellence in the teaching-learning process and bring in
real qualitative improvement along with extensive quantitative expansion in the educational
opportunities. The students, particularly those who have had their school education in the
regional medium will stand to benefit by this approach. Beyond bringing out one’s individual
talent, a good communication skill alone will enable team work and develop leadership
qualities.

Students, while presenting technical topics in seminar classes, should train themselves to
express their concepts and descriptions in well framed sentences. Even while writing
assignments or preparing papers for journals, they should consider such exercises as
opportunities to develop their writing skills. Preparation of slides for presentation of papers
in conferences is an art. Appropriately worded phrases and punctuations in the slides,
modulation and body language in the delivery, would compel the audience to pay attention
to the presenter, listen intently and induce them to participate in the subsequent discussions.

Dr. Mayilsamy Annadurai, Project Director of Chandrayaan I and Chandrayaan II, has said
that literary works and orations have the potential to shape the thinking of even scientists and

engineers and the way they approach the challenging problems in their field with great
optimism. Our former president APJ Abdul Kalam in the beginning of his first address to the
joint session of the Parliament recited a short poem ‚I climbed and climbed, where is the
peak my lord? I ploughed and ploughed where is the treasure of knowledge my Lord? I sailed
and sailed, where is the island of peace my Lord? Great leaders of yesteryears, like Swami
Vivekanandha, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. Sarvapalli Radha Krishnan continue to
motivate the students not only by their vision for the future of India but also by their excellent
language in which they conveyed their messages.

CAN LIGHT AID OUR SLEEP?

With busy lifestyles and limited time, a good night's sleep is essential for tackling the day
ahead. So what can you do to give your body a good rest? Well, changing the way you use
light in the evenings might just be the answer. Light plays an important role in helping our
bodies identify the time of day and the levels of energy we should produce. As we continue to
develop our understanding with increased research in these areas, we are discovering how
the different colours and intensity of LED lights can impact not only our energy levels, but
how well we sleep at night. More than likely you’ve come across blue light in the media and
how it suppresses sleep. Blue light plays an important role is aligning our circadian rhythm
and exposure to blue light during the day is essential for increased energy levels and
productivity. However with an increased reliance on computers, phones, tablets and TV’s,
especially at night, our ability to sleep well is suffering. This is because these screens emit
blue light which is keeping us awake even after we turn them off. The solution? You can dim
your screens or ideally switch off your devices an hour before going to sleep.

Conclusion: Use Blue colour (5 W lamp) light when sleeping will improve the blood
circulation throughout body.

RELEVANCE OF TIME

Time ticks away slowly,
Its loss never regained,
Time is dynamic 24hrs,
It waits for none.

Clock works with two hands,
We too work with two hands,
Clock works non-stop tirelessly,
Plan the work to avoid tiresome.

Clock works throughout,
We work through the day,
Clock makes sound hourly,
Start afresh after sound sleep.

Rich or poor equal with 24hrs,
Time is impartial and immortal,
Small droplet of time makes the day,
Waste not the precise time.

APPLICATION OF BIO-MEDICAL ENGINEERING IN NEPHROLOGY

Kidney is one of the vital organs that filters out waste from the blood, controls body fluids and
critically regulates the level of salt, potassium and acid content of the body. They are also
involved in production of hormones to stimulate the production of red blood cells, to control
calcium metabolism and regulate blood pressure. It also contributes to the production of
Vitamin-D, which is one important factor to maintain the strength of bones.

3

Therefore it is not an exaggeration to tell that kidney is performing life sustaining functions.
This precious organ is influenced by various factors such as ageing, heredity, diabetics, food
habits and physical activities. Though the first two is beyond scope, the remaining can be
controlled and regulated to safeguard this organ. If not taken care properly, this treasurable
part starts detoriating. Unfortunately kidney damage occurs silently often destroying it
before showing any symptom. Once damage occurs, either transplantation or dialysis is the
only choice. The biggest challenge at this stage is very high expense and the availability of
alternative kidney for replacement. Also there are stringent rules in availing kidney from the
donors and the number of patients requiring kidney outnumbers the donors. According the
statistics provided by National Kidney Foundation, every month 3000 patients are added to
kidney waiting list. In 2014, around 5000 people died while waiting for kidney and around
4000 became too sick to receive kidney transplant.

‘Prevention is better than cure’, therefore instead of fighting with disease, it would be better
to maintain good health. WHO report highlights various factors (environmental pollutions,
usage of chemicals in agriculture) that affect kidney function and claims unregulated food
additives in India is one additional influencing parameter. Intake of high protein and fat
creates burden on kidney. Recently, a craze on body building has increased among
youngsters. Therefore they start taking high protein food as recommended by the Gym
centers and fall prey to this deadly disease. Another increasing threat is seen in children.
Presently there is no physical activity and many are confined to four walls and are much
interested in using electronic gadgets. This increases obesity and fat, leading diabetics at
very early age. The Bio-Medical engineers are carrying out lot of research in devising
sophisticated diagnostic tools in the feild of Nephrology, such as abdominal ultrasonography.
Good food habits regulated day-to-day activities and a basic understanding over
physiological system would help to keep away diseases. The foremost duty of a human is to
refrain him/her from injury. It is the duty of every individual to protect themselves and
maintain good physical and mental health. The greatest wealth is the health. Healthy
citizens are the greatest asset any country can have says Sir. Winston S.

INDIA TOWARDS BIO-FUELS
Off the world top 20 polluted cities, 13 are in India and New Delhi tops the list. Air
pollution is the major issue in these cities and vehicle emission is one of the big source behind
this. Air pollution causes various health problems like respiratory diseases and cancer. About
1.5 million people die every year in India. Due to this, the Delhi government and National
Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned more than 10 years old diesel vehicles and diesel vehicles
below 2000cc in Delhi.

These events drag the industries and government to move towards greater technology to
overcome the pollution. Another fact that drives away from fossil fuel is its price. The solution
to these problems is to move towards

6

Alternative fuels produce less emission and are more fuel efficient. Alternative fuels
such as Ethanol, Methanol, Bio-CNG and Biodiesel have high scope as an replace for petrol
and diesel in India. In India the scope of producing Bio-diesel is high when compared with
other alternative fuels. It is made from animal fats, vegetable oils, oils from plants like
jatropha, soybean, sunflowers, corn, olive, peanut, sesame, cottonseed. India has a large
agricultural land and can able to produce enough sources for bio-diesel.

‚India will soon be zero petroleum import country‛- NitinGatkari, Union Minister.
This shows that government is planning to take India towards the bio-environment. Many
industries are working on research and develop sector to improve efficiency and availability
of alternative fuels. The government has to raise fund in agricultural sector to increase
production of bio-fuel resources and awareness programs about demerits of fossil fuel and
benefits of bio-fuel should be encouraged.

INTERNET OF THINGS- A LIFE CHANGER
After seeing all those posters in our college, I wondered what’s so special about
Internet of things [IoT]. The same day I googled about it and started developing a liking for
it. There was a video by Cisco, which made even the common man understand what it means.
So I decided to spread the knowledge about IoT.

The Internet of things is the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles, also referred to as
"connected devices" and "smart devices", buildings, and other itemswith embedded,
actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data.
In 2013 the Global Standards Initiative on Internet of Things defined the IoT as "the
infrastructure of the information society." The IoT allows objects to be sensed and/or

7

controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more
direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in
improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced human
intervention. When IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the technology becomes an
instance of the more general class of cyber-physical systems, which also encompasses
technologies such as smart grids, smart homes, intelligent transportation and smart cities.
Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to
interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure. Experts estimate that the IoT will
consist of almost 50 billion objects by 2020.Astonishing isn’t it!!!
A simple example

You wake up in the morning when the alarm rings. The ringing of the alarm
will automatically activate the water heater so that you can have a good bath and also the
coffee machine and the bread toaster. Hence all you need to do is to just wake up and go to
work. Like a mother, technology works for you. Technology is a good servant but a bad
master.

The next example can be essential in times of accidents. If you are driving and
you suddenly meet with an accident. A device present inside the car will assess the damage
caused to the car and you and will automatically send a message to the nearest hospital along
with your details and location. You don’t need to wait for the cold-hearted people to call the
ambulance.

The next technology is a boon to bachelors and hostellers. Recently developed
in China, The SMART CUPBOARD is nothing but a cupboard with inbuilt washing machine,
dryer, iron and AI to fold the dress neatly. All you need to do is just drop the dirty clothes into
the closet and get your fresh, clean cloth. It’s a really great servant.
Like this there are several boons.
Conclusion
This IoT is an ocean to talk about. I have just given you the introduction. Hence Technology
must be used in the right way for the welfare of the people. Too much dependency on
technology is a problem too.

ECE First year
