First meeting with fellow English teachers EKSA work
Clasroom Management
• I have always been one to fail to control class but I have picked up a few tricks from other teachers advices like • Demand for ones attention before speaking • this is method from my Dear Principal, Mdm Jennifer. she told me, before speaking, wait for them to be silent and then start to talk. I notice that before this, I talk my way through the noises with the students which often time failing the let the other student hear me. So, I try to demand attention from students by lifting up my hand and wait for their attention on me, and I give them a rule to when I lift up my hand, students must keep quiet. This method actually works for me, especially for my 1Harmoni student as they tend to be on the ‘loud’ side. • A catchy induction • this is a method I picked up from teacher Teresa, firstly, find a topic that is interesting for them to think and ponder quitely. For example, One time, Teacher Teresa started her induction by saying “listen to what I am about to say” and she started to story tell a situation and students went silent listening to her. They all went silent as she describe the topic at that time and when she ask them where she was based on the story, all students are able to answer her correctly. This tells me that, finding a good catchy induction can make students to listen quitely to the teacher.
THANK YOU

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TEACHERS/MENTOR REFLECTION SUMMARY DAILY JOURNAL CONCLUSION APPENDIX TABLE OF CONTENT 156
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to convey my heartful gratitude to Sekolah Menengah St. Michael, Penampang, for providing me a chance to undergo my School Orientation Programme with the code PIB3003 in their school for two weeks. A huge appreciation to the Excellent Principal, Madam Jennifer Asing, for her outstanding leadership in guiding me. Following that, Senior Executive Assistant, Madam Judith, for the countless advice and her never-ending assurance during my journey. Not to forget, Teacher Fenny, my mentor of two weeks, in educating and aiding me in learning various knowledge that will help me with my future endeavours. The completion of this undertaking could not have been possible without the assistance of so many individuals whose names have and have not all been enumerated. This journal is written to provide a thorough insight into my journey in SM St. Michael as a teacher’s assistant from 25th July 2022 until 5th August 2022. 157
Madam Jennifer Asing is the school principal of SM St. Michael, Penampang. Her advice to both the teachers and students is something I will always remember. She never fails to remind the teachers to be punctual, the students to be grateful for the things they have, and to be better human beings. She is very detailed when it comes to the student's education. During the meeting discussing the students' performance for exams and tests, Puan Jennifer never fails to ask the teachers about the details of the students. "If we see a student facing trouble, then we as the teachers must help them from the start." I am very grateful to be granted the chances to learn from her. Madam Jennifer Asing 158
Madam Judith Donsia Madam Judith is the Penolong Kanan Pentadbiran in SM St. Michael, Penampang. She was the first teacher I met in this school. She never fails to remind me of the correct outfit for the teachers in this school. Whenever she is in the staff room, she would often ask, "Amanda, are you doing okay so far?" I adore her assurance in ensuring my completion of this journey is most enjoyable. She also shared her wisdom with me when I met her for my report. "As teachers, it is important for us to keep the professional setting with the students while still caring for them". Words cannot describe my appreciation for her for being so kind to me. 159
Teacher Fenny Chin Teacher Fenny is one of the English teachers in SM St. Michael. During our first encounter, I was to accompany her to SMK Limbanak. She never fails to make sure that I feel belonged even though I was still new there. She always tries her best to answer my questions related to teaching or the school. One of the many things that I respect her for is her greetings to the students in class. She would always greet the students back. She has a good relationship with her fellow teachers in SM St. Michael as she has a friendly personality. When teaching, I was able to get a glimpse of her passion. Whenever her students face trouble in the class, she would explain it to them with patience. She likes to incorporate games like 'Hangman' to make her classes more interesting. 160
Even though I was only in this school for as short as ten days, there was an abundant of things I have acquired from the school, the teachers, and the students. REFLECTION SUMMARY Leadership • The teachers of St. Michael have never failed to amaze me with their strong sense of leadership skills. During the meeting discussing the students' performance for their recent exam, Madam Jennifer would ask for a detailed explanation on each segment. "Who got the lowest? Do they have any trouble with the other subjects?" She mentioned that it is important for all teachers to identify the cause of the problem so the administration can provide necessary help. 161
REFLECTION SUMMARY Class Management • After observing Teacher Fenny's classes, I comprehend that it is crucial for a teacher to master class management skills. There might be unwanted incidents like stray's entry to class, poor weather, or non-functioning speaker, and many other. From there, I was able to witness as to how she overcame these challenges. Students' Engagement with English activities • The school actively encourages the students to engage themselves in numerous activities/competitions. Four students have participated in Poetry Recitation and Public Speaking Competition. The teachers were quick to give immediate feedback on their performance so they improve for their future competitions. Teacher Fenny has also acknowledged a student from 3B for winning second place in an Essay writing competition. The school also creates a weekly English activity during the assembly where students would have to do engaging activities with the other students. 162
ENTRY: 1 DATE: 25TH JULY 2022, MONDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL This entry summarised the first day process in regard to PIB3003, School Orientation Program, or what is called as R.O.S.: Rancangan Orientasi Sekolah, in Sekolah Menengah St. Michael. During the second meeting with the Senior Executive Assistant, Madam Judith, she briefly explained the dress code as well as the expected time of arrival for the morning session teachers. After that, I was introduced to my mentor for the upcoming two weeks, Teacher Fenny, who holds the position of Head of the English Department. While conducting a brief school tour: from explaining the location of the staff room, the names of the buildings, and which Form they are mainly for, Teacher Fenny too clarified that I will be joining her in teaching Form Three classes. 163
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL There were a few things that I was able to notice upon joining the first assembly with this school. Firstly, the appreciation award. It is apparent that the school holds high regard to their students’ performance. The teacher in charge of the ceremony was especially proud of all the mentioned students for their outstanding achievements. It is undeniable that the appreciation held by the school can nurture the students’ selfesteem, as well as to encourage other students in performing well, regardless in the education, or in the co-curriculum field. Other notable issue was also the mention of the students’ attendance record. While possessing good achievements in their co-curriculum, it is also important for the school and the teachers to keep a close track of their students’ attendance. Madam Judith has stressed on the importance of attendance with the students, which I firmly believe is one of the most significant issues to be reminded and discussed with the students. The assembly ended with a gentle reminder for the Form Three students to finalise their preferred stream before transitioning to Form Four next year. 164
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL Even though I was unable to partake in a teaching and learning session with any of the Form Three class, I managed to explore as to how the school actively promotes activities in relation to the English language. I was required to accompany my mentor, Teacher Fenny, along with two other teachers to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Limbanak. The purpose of this journey was to guide students who have participated in public speaking and poetry recitation competitions. The competing schools were: Sekolah Menengah St. Michael, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Limbanak, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tansau, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bahang, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Putatan, and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaaan Datuk Peter Mojuntin. Fortunately, Sekolah Menengah St. Michael was able to secure first place for both categories. It was admirable to see the teachers providing immediate feedbacks of their performance once the competition was over. The concise feedback consisted of things that can be improved on for their next competition: their pronunciation, and suggested points to be added to their next speech, which betters the skills of the students. 165
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL In the evening, the students attended a talk in the hall. As it was my first time in this school compound, I was confused as to where the teachers were supposed to be seated at. I took some time to look through the information board or the Highly Immersive Programme Corner. The Corner provides solid evidence that the school ensures its students’ engagement with the English language. The students are active through various segments like essay writing, poetry writing, drama, choral speaking, scrabble competitions, and many others. All in all, I found that this school provides a successful balance when it comes to education and co-curriculum; thus, becomes the solid reason for their outstanding students. 166
ENTRY: 2 DATE: 26TH JULY 2022, TUESDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL For this entry, the second day of the School Orientation Program went smoothly. The highlight of the assembly was the English activity. This activity was conducted by the students and for the students. Teacher Fenny explained that the English activity is a weekly segment done every Tuesday and is done on a rotational basis. The students in charge of the week’s English activity were students from 5D. The assigned students provided three questions for each form, and one question was opened to all students. I found the questions stimulating in the way that they covered topics like General Knowledge and Science. The students who managed to answer the questions correctly were awarded stationaries as prizes. I believe it is a segment proven to be beneficial for the students as it challenged the students to be mentally active from the go. It is commendable to see the school’s great effort in ensuring the students’ engagement with all of the subjects. 167
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL My first teaching and learning session was with 3B students. My mentor forwarded a copy of her lesson plan through Telegram before class. The lesson intended to discuss the exam paper from their recent examination. It was fortunate that the students were able to recall the rubrics for essay writing. The rubric was said to be revised in class before the examination. The mentioned rubrics are as follows: Content, Communicative Ability, Organization, and Language. Before conducting a further discussion regarding the question paper, Teacher Fenny recalled the importance of the rubrics. She too clarified the major reason why the students have lost marks, especially in their essay writing. The students did not seem to have any trouble comprehending the instruction given by the teacher. However, I did find a challenge with the students where most of them did not jot down crucial notes that may help them with their future exams. Other than that, I too noticed that a few strays had entry to the school compound. A cat had entered the class twice, which did interrupt the flow of the class. But the teacher was able to gain the students’ attention back to the lesson. 168
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL I was required to attend relief classes for 3D and 3I classes. Both classes gave their full cooperation, and the classes were under control. But, there was an interesting incident that happened in 3I. Half an hour through the relief class, two students came up front and bombarded me with questions. “How does your study schedule look like when you were in high school, teacher?”, “I am not good at History, how do I study that subject?”, “How did you study for your PT3, teacher?” were the few questions that were asked by these students. I was highly proud to see their great concern about their education. They did not have trouble expressing their worry about their studies to me. Since they were Form 3 students, there was also a brief mention of stream choices. Based on the conversation, one of the students was still in a dilemma regarding which subjects he should take next year. Words could not describe my eagerness and gladness in having the privilege to help the students, even when the assistance is in the form of advice. It was quite a pity that I was unable to ask my mentor how the school assists the students in choosing their streams as a transition to Form 4 later. 169
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL English class with 3A students was conducted in the library. I took a brief tour around the library to see the collection of books before the arrival of the students. As for the library, the school prepares a variety of books in terms of their genres. The books were also neatly arranged according to the language. There was also a new collection of books to be added to the school library. For the class with 3A students, similar to 3B class, Teacher Fenny did a short discussion with the students regarding their exam papers. While the students were completing the task given by Teacher Fenny, Teacher Fenny recorded the video for a student who is participating in a public speaking competition. There were also a few students practicing with their group mates. To summarise, Teacher Fenny utilised constructive learning in both classes and taught them sensory writing. Sensory writing required them to construct an essay similar to the exam question, but with the usage of five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound. 170
ENTRY: 3 DATE: 27TH JULY 2022, WEDNESDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL I was only able to access the teachers’ Telegram group today after receiving an invitation from Teacher Fenny. It was more convenient as I could check the schedule for relief classes. For today’s teaching and learning session, I went to 3H as Teacher Fenny had to replace another teacher to teach English. Similar to the previous classes, the class discussed the breakdown of the exam paper. The lesson began with inquiries regarding the rubric or mark breakdown. One challenge I noticed in this class was the students’ hesitancy in answering the teacher’s questions about connectors. It seemed that the students were unsure of what connectors were. To overcome that, the teacher played a mini-game with the students where they were required to stand up. The rule of the game was that the students could only sit down once they have given the right answer. 171
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL Once all students have managed to give their answers, Teacher Fenny requested them to check their practice book to see the lists of connectors. The exam question was to construct an essay on a birthday party they had attended. Relating to the lesson plan that was given by Teacher Fenny, the lesson for 3D, 3I, and 3B were similar as well. One vast difference I was able to notice was the usage of language in the classroom. For example, in 3H, more students took a longer time to understand the meaning of the instructions. For that, Teacher Fenny initially explained the instruction more thoroughly. But, Teacher Fenny translated some of the words to Bahasa Melayu so the students have a better understanding of it. 172
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL What I like about the lesson was how engaging all classes were despite the repetition of the topic that was taught. Teacher Fenny has a loud and clear voice, leaving no space for confusion. Teacher Fenny also included activities like ‘Hangman’ to let the students guess the word. Since the students have good chemistry with each other, it was obvious that the activity had attracted their attention. The school also practices mutual respect. For example, during the assembly, the students would stand up to give their greetings to the teacher. It is heart-warming to see the teachers greeting and bowing back to the students as a reply. The same tradition is also practiced inside the classroom. Teacher Fenny seems to always bow back and give her greetings to the students. I like the tradition as it creates a special bond between the teachers and the students. Even though it is only my third day, I noticed that all classrooms are fully equipped to ensure an optimum study environment for the students. All classes own their mini library, with books ranging from writers like Enid Blyton, and J.K. Rowling, to reference books. LCD is also provided in each class. I am convinced that for a lesson to run smoothly, the class must first be equipped with important instruments. Whereas for English subject, I fathomed that all students have a file specifically for the subject. Thus, to summarise, the school contributes a lot of things to promote an enjoyable learning environment for the students. 173
ENTRY: 4 DATE: 28TH JULY 2022, THURSDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL Fortunately, the school principal, Madam Jennifer Asing, was able to join the morning assembly after a few days of doing work outside of the school compound. One Form 5 student came up front to present her speech to everyone present in the hall. Her speech entitled 'Sepakat Membawa Berkat' was a good speech for all the students. Next, 'Anugerah Murid Contoh' was also done. Teacher Fenny explained that this award is given to the best student every month. Thus, the teachers would vote for a candidate and the majority would win the award. I adore this award because it is certainly proven to boost the student's confidence. As it was my first assembly with the school principal around, I was content to hear her sharing. 174
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL Puan Jennifer had given advice about maintaining good behaviour, regardless of where they are. Her outstanding leadership amazes me because, despite her stern statements, it was still possible for her to advise the students in a soft tone. For 3B's class, Teacher Fenny instructed the students to complete some work on the exercise book. The students were required to change verbs to nouns. The class was supposed to complete the listening exercise as well, but it was postponed to the next class due to some technical difficulties. The speaker that was supposed to be used had run out of battery. One challenge I noticed in this lesson was a student falling asleep. I observed that the same student has been falling asleep in the class multiple times. Teacher Fenny saw this and took immediate action. She advised the student to mind his sleeping schedule and not oversleep. From here, we see how the teachers in SM St. Michael have a huge interest in the students' wellbeing. I believe that it is important for a teacher to identify the root of challenges in the classroom. 175
ENTRY: 5 DATE: 29TH JULY 2022, FRIDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL The highlight of today's entry is Madam Jennifer's concern over teachers' arrival to class. During the assembly, she stressed the importance of being punctual to all the teachers. She mentioned that some parents have raised issues related to teachers not coming to class. From there, all the teachers are more mindful about the time, and they are always reminding each other to avoid being late for class. I admire the act of reminding each other as can be seen by the teachers. Another notable issue was the mention of theft cases in the school. The principal has raised a concerning issue where nine calculators were found missing. Even though it was not a positive thing, it was admirable to see the principal addressing this matter with the students. 176
ENTRY: 6 DATE: 1ST AUGUST 2022, MONDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL During the assembly, a teacher announced the summary report for last week's attendance. 4A class held the highest attendance for last week whereas 5I was said to have the lowest attendance record. Attendance was again raised as an issue by the principal. She did not fail in reminding the students of the need and importance to come to school. From her speech, I respect her advice that we should be grateful for the things we have. God has granted us many things in life. The sports day result was also announced today. The students were asked to gather in the Multi-purpose court as to celebrate the activity there. The students were very enthusiastic as they were cheering their team's chant. They were also very supportive of each other. 177
ENTRY: 7 DATE: 2ND AUGUST 2022, TUESDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL The entry is written to summarise the seventh day of the School Orientation Programme. Like last Tuesday’s assembly, the highlight was the English activity. For this week, this segment was handled by 5G students. Teacher Fenny explained that the school has been doing activities similar to this for a certain period of time. I fathomed that depending on the month, the teachers from different subjects will assign students in doing activities along with the morning session students. Even though the questions provided were designated for English, the topics were majorly related to Geography and general knowledge. 178
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL The school is highly active in their participations with various competitions. It was also informed that three of the students from 3B are participating in English Cyberspace Challenge – Article Trailer. My mentor informed me that an article was given to the participants, and they would have to create a trailer video for it. Before ending the class, Teacher Fenny took the initiative to remind these students to proceed with recording their video for the Article Trailer as the dateline was approaching. On top of that, Teacher Fenny has also made a brief announcement in the Telegram group notifying other teachers of their activity. Teacher Fenny has asked for the school's understanding since the students would be roaming around the school with their handphones to record their video. 179
ENTRY: 8 DATE: 3RD AUGUST 2022, WEDNESDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL Book Review was one of the activities that happened in the assembly today. I noticed that the student has prepared a speech before the activity, signifying her total preparation. I salute the school for holding such an activity where the students are given opportunities to do something productive in the morning. The school principal has also touched on the students' mode of transportation. For students who are going to school by bike, she reminded them to put their helmets on for safety purposes. A spot check was also done in the assembly to check the students' nails, hair, and socks. I believe it is something that should be done more often to maintain discipline among the students. Relating to the weekly English activity, Teacher Fenny has also given a friendly reminder to Form Three students to prepare for their upcoming turns. Since they have ample time to prepare for it, she suggested the activities be different from what was done today. One of her suggestions was to sketch with the students. I admire the teacher's passion in encouraging the students as it will highly improve their speaking skills. 180
ENTRY: 9 DATE: 4TH AUGUST 2022, THURSDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL For today's entry, an announcement was made by the principal. The administration/head of departments would be entering classes to check all workbooks, exercise books, and notebooks. Thus, a reminder was made to ensure all workbooks have been checked and marked by the teacher. Thus, teaching and learning sessions centered more around checking unmarked pages with the students. Before entering the class, I took some time to observe the reading corner that was positioned beside the surau. There was a collection of books that piqued my interest. There were a few books by Enid Blyton and Charles Dickens. I was quite unsure as to how often the students visited the reading corner, but the reading corner has prepared interesting choices for the students. In 3D, Teacher Fenny emphasised putting all of their notes in the English file. She also went through unmarked pages with the students. One teaching technique that I favour was Teacher Fenny's assurance. This did not only happen in 3D, but in all classes that she was teaching. "It's okay, you can try first", "You can do this", and " It's okay to make mistakes". With the reassuring environment, I believe that the students are likely to be more responsive in class. 181
ENTRY: 10 DATE: 5TH AUGUST 2022, FRIDAY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL For my last entry, one of the highlights is the Friday mass. The students were gathered around the hall before walking to St. Michael church. The church was packed with students and teachers. I was concerned for the student's safety since the weather was not in its best condition. Thankfully, it was not raining when the Friday mass started. I was also brought to witness the school's meeting. The meeting was to discuss the performance of the students based on their recent examinations and test. The school principal went through all slides without stopping, and she looked into each detail intricately. She did not fail to ask questions like "Are the students having trouble with other subjects?", "If there is any problem, please let us know so the school can provide alternatives to assist the students". To summarise, the teachers take a huge interest over the students' performance in their studies and cocurriculum. I adore the school's never ending effort in providing a comfortable learning environment for the students, as well as their initiatives in assisting the needy students. Thus, it would not be an exaggeration to say that I went home with a smile on my face. 182
The ten days long of Rancangan Orientasi Sekolah is by far one of the most exciting things that have happened this year. Not only have I learnt various teaching techniques from an experienced teacher, but I have also encountered different students with different learning styles. As a future teacher, it is crucial to hold that professional relationship with your students while still creating a bond with them. I have also acquired knowledge as to how the English language should be promoted in or outside of school, regardless of the student's level of proficiency. It was a bit unfortunate that the journey had to end so soon. Nevertheless, I am grateful for the opportunity bestowed upon me to meet such amazing teachers and outstanding students at SM. St. Michael. CONCLUSION 183

Saya sangat menghargainya 199
