A P P R E C I AT I O N

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your guidance and
supervision during my entire practicum. The experience was more than what I could have
expected and it allowed me to grow, learned, and developed skills that are needed in this
profession

I also want to thank my mentors and fellow teachers for taking their time to share their
knowledge and expertise in the field. It was through these times that I felt that I was able to
learn and grew the most in developing and honing my skills throughout the practicum. The
teachers and staffs were most responsive to me and always made me feel like a full-time
member of the group. Truly, the working environment of this school was terrific and positive.

Last but not least, my sincere apologies for any wrongdoings that I made knowingly and
unknowingly which made you uncomfortable and offended you somehow. Once again, thank
you for your acceptance, support, and growth opportunity you have provided. Please extend
my thanks and appreciation to the entire staff for such a substantive internship
experience.

MY 11 WEEKS OF PRACTICUM REFLECTION

I have never dreamed of becoming a teacher in my whole life. Some things happened
unexpectedly, so I ended up pursuing Bachelor in Education majoring in Mathematics. Life
had been topsy-turvy being an undergraduate student, a lot of drama whirled by and I even
went through many ups and downs.

Flash forward to the day I started my practicum in August, I was excited yet nervous
to start my practicum after a few months delayed due to the pandemic situation. I decided to
do my practicum in SM St Michael Penampang. I had the privilege to enter two classrooms for
my practicum and teach the students for the first time. My mentors were Teacher Manimaran
a/l Peromal for Mathematics and Teacher Audrey Cherry Insing for Pendidikan Moral. I was
placed in 1 Dedikasi and 2 Gemilang for teaching them Mathematics and Pendidikan Moral,
r e s p e c t i v e l y.

The first week of real teaching, I was on a rocky roller coaster. Never did I knew that
making lesson plans during assignments and planning for the real lesson were two different
things. So, I often panic all the while I was in the school compound. But slowly, I became
more confident and managed to come up with a better lesson plan each day, with the help of
my mentors and my friends. I have begun to adapt the strategies. The experience indeed has
changed my entire outlook on teaching. It has made me realize how much I enjoyed being a
teacher, and how important it is to provide the children with the best education possible
These are the things that I learned during my 11 weeks of practicum:

6

❖ Making lesson plans

For some teacher trainees, they can plan lessons for the whole week. But this can only be
applied to classes with advanced students. In my case, the students that I teach were mostly
of mixed ability in Mathematics. Due to this, I had to write lesson plans every single day so
that I able to see whether my students able to understand or need more practice or not.
Planning lessons were the hardest for me, but after 11 weeks, I can say that I can already
write decent lesson plans now. I can say for sure that lesson plans are very important as it
outlines the lesson that teachers are going to teach.

❖ Preparing lesson plans

Writing lesson plans each day means that I have to prepare the teaching aids daily too. As
teacher trainees, we need to come up with interesting teaching aids for the lessons to attract
students’ attention and promote effective learning experiences among the students. For this
school, multimedia resources are readily available in almost all the classes. To me, it is a
good way to save time and money by teaching and show the students videos, slideshows and
Powerpoint. Sometimes, I used manila cards, flashcards and other physical teaching aids
which require quite a sum of money. I was fortunate that I received allowances from my
scholarship to cover for these things. Having to use manila cards especially topics like Basic
Polygons in bright colors tend to excite these students and them able to remember better.

7

❖ Class Management

No matter how good teachers are in preparing lesson plans, we will end up struggling
with class management. Well, I went through this too the first time. I can say that I was lucky
enough to say that most of my students were well mannered but they can be mischievous,
playful and talkative at times. I even encountered some disrespectful students throughout my
practicum. I know that there was not much that a teacher trainee like me can do in a short
period to change their attitude. But, I scolded them and explained them for their behaviors.

❖ First impression is very important as well

For effective class management, I learned from my mentors that be strict with them and try
not to smile at students if teachers are disciplining students because this helps to make
students scared and eventually gain respect. One thing that I remembered the most that
Teacher Audrey told me was that does not be afraid to be strict or to punish students.

❖ Setting up rules in the first class

In the very first class, it is important to state what students should do and should not do in
the class. This is to make sure students understand and follow the rules. A teacher can give
punishments to students if they disobey the rules.

8

❖· Create more group activities

This was one of the many suggestions that I received from the students from the
Teacher ’s Feedback Forms via Google Forms. Students love doing hands-on activities with
their friends. However, it was hard to do so for 1 Dedikasi as the class size was big where
there are 43 students and there were so few spaces for them to move around. The only group
activity that I had them do was the PBL and pair work on certain topics. Additionally, I only
followed the school’s SOP during this pandemic situation. Whereas for 2 Gemilang, I had
them do multiple group activities such simulation, group work discussion.

❖ Implement 21st-century learning

In this aspect, I thought that Teacher Audrey had guided and given me some
examples of conducting 21st – century learning activities. She was not doubt the most

creative and dedicated person. She inspired me a lot with her method of conducting student-

centered learning in the class likes simulation, acting, presentation and so forth. I also
learned that she had implemented what she called “Make Someone Smile Today” which was
quite creative and fun way to track students’ mood and great examples for starting her
lesson. Besides that, one of her best activities was the “Grade Card” in which she
encouraged students to evaluate their friends’ simulation by using A, B, C and D cards that

she prepared on her own.

9

❖ Others/ Extras

1. Merit Sytems
I would use the school’s merit system to complement students for their good deeds such as
completing their homework, voluntarily come forward to present their answers on the
whiteboard, submit their work on time, and so forth. I gave my students either praise or
reward them that worth 5 to 10 merits.

2. Treat
I remembered that when I asked the students to submit their exercise book for the first time.
However, only a few of them submitted them out of 43 students. I rewarded them with some
drinks by calling out their names one by one in front of the class. I purposely rewarded them
in front of the class to motivate other students to do the same. Then, I noticed that more
students starting to submit their works to me just to get praised in front of the class.

3. Last but not least, it is important for those who are going to become teacher trainees
or new teachers to always give their best in everything. Be polite to other teacher and always
show the positive sides to anyone in the school. We also should not hesitate but always
extend out bits of help to the teacher who needs our help such as class relief. In return, the
teachers would not hesitate to return the favor by helping us if we need guidance or helping
hands. Well, they do have more experience than we do anyway.

10

I feel that many individuals had much to do with my success. My deepest gratitude
goes to the Principal, Madam Judith and two of my mentors for their guidance, support and
patience in my Practicum. Teacher Manimaran and Teacher Audrey were such excellent role
models, and I hope that through their guidance that I will be hopefully become a successful
teacher in my classroom in the future. Madam Jennifer and Madam Judith were both
inspiration to me as well that they were the most dedicated person in the school. The
experience of working under their wings were beyond words can express. I can say for sure
that I learned and grew a lot since doing the practicum in this school. My teaching practicum
turned out to be a very enjoyable experience because all teachers were very nice to us. Not
forgetting to mention the laughters and jokes that I shared with my mentors. I was surprised
how close we can be in such a short time. Also, I had to experience conducting online classes
for the last two weeks before my practicum ended. I feel like I have learned so much from this
experience. It was indeed required a lot of work and intensive time took a lot of planning and
preparing for the online classes, but it was all worth it. This was because the intensive time
was difficult, but it was such a rewarding feeling to know that at the end of the week, work
was completed so much.

I thought I was ready for my practicum as I felt very competent in my abilities
because I was sure that the information from my classes had prepared me well for it, but I
was in for a surprise. My skills were challenged and refined with each experience. At times, I
would sit back and reflect upon some of the strategies that I learned from the

11

class experiences and through my mentors. Reflecting on my daily journals keep me aware of
what was going on. Now I completely understand the purpose of this required practicing
teacher trainees to write daily journals. It has opened up my eyes. Reading back my journals
made me acknowledge the capabilities and the areas that I needed improvement. Though I
thought I was well equipped with some values that essential in daily lives and the
professional field. It turned out to be the opposite. Well, I realized that I gained first-hand
exposure and skills as well as knowledge honed via working in the real world compared to the
theoretical knowledge acquired in university life.

I have been fortunate to have great classmates with which I have built a good
friendship. The times when I struggled the most was when I would message them and would
share with them how stressful my day had been, and having them to support me has been
great. Now I realized that the practicum experience helped me a lot, and I learned a lot with
the students and also with the schools. Nonetheless, the obstacles and challenges have had
a profoundly positive influence on me; I was much more secure, confident and self-assured of
my abilities. The challenges in my practicum journey that I thought would paralyze me, have
instead made me discover my potential and strength. The experiences from my practicum had
allowed me to develop my philosophies and values to propel me to further my studies in the
field of supporting children with exceptionalities. Truly, being a teacher requires one to
possess many skills. Dealing with children is not an easy task, yet doing it out of passion
makes a whole lot difference in which the path is truly Rewarding. This field has changed my
life and heart for the better. As I continue to go further through practicum experience, I have
come to realize that I have made an excellent career choice.

12

WEEK 1

Today was my first day doing my practicum at SM St Michael Penampang. I was very n ervous to

face the principal, teachers and all the students. All I hope was that I made a good impression

on my very first day. The first thing that I did that day was to meet the principal in her office.

While Jeanie and I were waiting outside her office, she started her day by giving an

announcement to the whole school. It was a long announcement which took about 15 minutes

for her to emphasize the importance of following the SOP while we were at the school. I cannot

lie how much I missed those days of hearing her nagging early in the morning during the

assembly. When we were in her office, she greeted and welcomed warmly for serving the

school.

She also mentioned us how strict and straight forward she can be. Criticism sometimes

can be brutal or hurtful to some, but, to me, I thought it would be necessary and needs to be

more open-minded in accepting these things to grow and do self-improvement. Also, I took her

advice that we should never procrastinate and do things at the very last minute. We should

manage our times well for things to be well-organized. Otherwise, we will have insufficient time

to get things done and leave us under pressure, as a result, tasks ended up sloppy for doing

things in a rush. After hearing her life experiences, I was very determined to be like her, the

way she managed her time by juggling her work and her studies. She even managed to get

excellent results even though she was working and pursuing her Master’s degree at the same

time. I always admired her passion and dedication to the school. She had this energy that can

greatly affect and drive teachers’ as well as the students’ performances. She also displayed

great love towards the school and the reason why she would continue the legacy of making the

school better than before. 13

WEEK 2

I found her a very dedicated and committed person especially her
responsibilities to the school. She always is the first one to arrive and
the last one to leave the school. She usually comes to the school as
early as 5,30 am and go home late at 6.30 pm. She works almost than 12
hours per day and the time she spent in the school is more than the time
she could spend with her family at home. She held a very big
responsibilities and made a lot of sacrifices for the school. To me, she is
one of the best leaders who are willing to commit to a school that she
loves and persevere despite the obstacles, challenges, burdens and
sacrifices. After all, realizing a vision does not happen overnight, true
transformation takes time. All the blood, sweat and tears will be worth it
once the achievements are accomplished.

14

WEEK 2

I met Madam Johanna for the first time when she dropped by at the
teachers’ office last Monday. I did not have the chance to meet her the
previous week as she was not in her office when Madam Judith showed us
around the school. I found her very friendly and appear to approached
easily. She greeted and put on her big smile to welcome us doing
practical in the school.

Also, I remembered when I went out for lunch with some other
fellow teachers to the school canteen. Coincidently, I saw her sitting in
front of thee students’ restrooms, having conversation with the school
workers. She treated them equally, regardless of gender, race, age and
socio-economic level. Working in the administration office can be very
hectic, busy, and challenging with heavy tasks. Despite her busy
schedule, she able to find some time and get in touch with the school
workers. To me, this is a good and healthy practice of workplace
environment, it can be seen that the relationship among all the school
workforces are great and extremely close. They would greet, help and
support each other which are extremely important as they work as a team
regardless of the different jobs titles.

15

MADAM NESTRE POLINON

KETUA BIDANG MATEMATIK & SAINS

On Tuesday morning, teachers had to attend a Panitia Meeting on Mathematics and
Science subjects. The chairperson was Dr. Ma who also acts as the “Ketua Panitia
Mathematics” There were a lot of agenda and issues discussed during the meeting regarding
these two subjects. As there were also a lot of inquiries asked by some teachers for
clarification . Teacher Nestre able to explain the issues calmly and as clear as she could.
Additionally, she added some information that were not mentioned during the meeting and even
conveyed messages given by the principal.

This was the only opportunities that I able to observe her due to the difference class
session. During the meeting, I realized that she was the type that would silently observe the
situation beforehand before giving her thought or even imposed questions on the matter
discussed. I saw her would listen to the presentation to gather information and only then she
would gave her feedback and comment afterward. There 4 main personality tests in terms of
communication namely, dominance, influence, steady and compliant, in short, DISC
personality. I thought she belongs to the C personality which stands for cautious, calculating,
competent, conscientious, contemplative and careful. This is the reason that I also found her
to be a thoughtful and cautions personality as she would be careful in selecting her words
before giving out her opinion in order to avoid offending other people. She was indeed
reserved task-oriented and very analytical person. Her way of communication wise usually
would be using many questions as a means of obtaining more information.

16

WEEK 3
MADAM JENNIFER ASING

EXCELLENT PRINCIPAL

Being a principal has its challenges. It is not an easy profession as it demands a
highly-stress job that most people are not equipped to handle. Her job as the school
principal is broad. She has her hands in virtually everything related to the students,
teachers, and parents as well. She is the chief decision-maker in the building. Recently, the
school just happened to conduct sudden spot-checks during the examination and managed
to confiscate quite a lot of students’ handphones. Then, she was reported by a parent
regarding to the content that posted in the social media made by a teacher on the results of
the captured handphones recently. This post has been the talk of the whole school. Although
she was very disappointed with this incident, she managed to remain calm and find
solutions to deal with the frustrated parent. She did talked to the teacher responsible to
posting the content in the social media but she also took this opportunity to advise all
teachers to think before we act, to always weigh the pros and cons of every actions. Every
action of decision that is made has to take the impact it will cause on the students or the
school.

17

Teacher Gabriel is responsible mainly for the evening session affairs. I
realized that she often remind teachers’ duties of the week and whose
turn for doing Nilam. Most of the time, I saw her constantly walking
around the school corridor to collect some data from every class of
students’ attendances in the first period of the day. There were few times
that I forgot to update the students’ attendances of 2 Gemilang; she would
walk from class to class to remind first period teachers that enter for the
lesson for updating in the group. This signified her dedication and hard
work to the school. I admire her dedication and her responsibility to
makes the effort to walk all way from her office to St Joseph for the sake
of reminding us teachers.

However, there were times where I found her get things
mixed up easily. There was this one experience when she distributed the
newly updated examination schedule to the students. She mistakenly
distributed the 2 Harmoni students with Form 1 examination schedule.
Luckily, the students informed me about it and I later went to her office to
inform her which she eventually realized.

18

WEEK 4
MADAM JENNIFER ASING

EXCELLENT PRINCIPAL

Many great leaders have one thing in common and that is charisma. She is indeed a 19
charismatic leader that can inspire and encourage people to do more than they would
normally do, despite all the obstacles and personal sacrifices. She has the charisma that
somehow provokes energy and commitment out of her teachers. She also possesses the
power to motivate the teachers to do almost anything. In every morning prayers, she
always reminded the teachers to update and submit their daily lesson plans in Google
Drive. She added that it was the teachers’ duties to submit their daily lesson plans as it
was planned and prepared before the lesson even conducted. Hence, it would not be any
problem to submit them on time and right away unless there were something that made
them fail to do so.

Moreover, I realized that thought she has very powerful personality, she has a sense
of maturity and character. She does not believe in empty showmanship, but she will draw
on her wisdom and knowledge that she had acquired over the years of life and teaching
experiences. Hence, I saw her behave maturely an responsibly on all occasions.

Overall, I would want this trait as being a charismatic person as I can sometimes
lack of self-confidence. Having this trait can not only appear confident in communication
but tend to help others feel confident too, which essential and crucial in the effective
communication process and boost the outcomes. Thus, I able to communicate with others
better and gain one’s trust and confident towards me. With that, I can lead others well
provided with great self-confidence and charismatic quality.

MINGGU 5
PUAN JENNIFER ASING
PENGETUA CEMERLANG

menitikberatkan sahsiah para murid tetapi terbukti menjaga kebajikan setiap guru.

20

PUAN AUDREY CHERRY INSING
PEMBANTU PENOLONG KANAN PETANG

Cikgu Audrey merupakan salah satu guru pembimbing saya semasa saya
melakukan praktikum di sekolah ini. Saya mendapati bahawa Cikgu Audrey bukan sahaja
Audrey memberitahu saya bahawa beliau mengakui kesalahannya mungkin terlepas

21

MR MANIMARAN A/L PEROMAL
MATHEMATICS TEACHER

Teacher Manimaran ig great and committed to the role of a mentor teacher. He is willing
to share his skills, knowledge, expertise and experiences with me. He shared a lot of his
experiences of what it was like just starting in his field back then. On 4 September
(Friday), he decided to conduct an observation on my teaching in the class. I appreciated
how he would empowered me through positive, constructive, kind and direct feedback. I
remembered he said that I need to speak in louder voice so that all students able to hear
me loud and clear. Also, he mentioned about teaching Mathematics fully in English. As for
his relationship with his students, it was clearly shown that he would act according to the
situation. He can be serious when the situation needed him to be serious, strict when he
has to disciplined the students and being playful to get close with the students.

He is also very helpful person as he would support and provide helps to his
colleagues whenever they need help. It also reveal that his relationship with the fellow
teachers are great where they would extend help with each other. Often, they would
communicate their thoughts and share their good and bad experiences or activity in the
classroom. There were a couple of times that I recalled him assisted Azril that during that
time having hard time adjusting in education field. Not only is he helpful to the novice
teacher but to his fellow teachers as they find themselves calling him for help perhaps
due to his kindness and trustworthy.

22

Besides that, he is a funny person too. Despite his humorous side, he is a
good listener as well. I observe that many teachers found themselves coming to
him and would mutually exchange their problems and conversation. Clearly, the
teachers’ relationships with each other displayed supportive in this school where
they constantly communicate with each other. On the other hand, I often shared
and discussed with him regarding my lesson and the 1 Dedikasi students’
behavior as he is their classroom teacher. It was very nice and pleasant to have
him as my mentor, he guided me well, sometimes treated me with sweets, and I
enjoyed watching him jokingly and playfully quarrel with Teacher Audrey. It
seemed childish yet somehow helped us bond quicker and that I was able to
adjust to the environment faster.

23

WEEK 6
MADAM JENNIFER ASING

EXCELLENT PRINCIPAL

A good principal must been seen. In my point of view, the principal was highly visible
around the school compound despite her hectic and tight schedule. She was often out in the
hallway monitoring teachers’ and students’ activities. Apart from that, she often participate
in the school meetings to discuss the school events regardless how busy her schedules
were. I thought her presence while moving or supervising through the building was
important as it reflects her commitment to the students’ learning process. I realized that
most students were scared of her and tend to be well-behaved when she was around.
Meanwhile, the students were behaving oppositely when she was no longer present in the
hallway. She used the “walking around” as a primary tool to observe teachers’ teaching
performances in student learning. From there, she able to identify the areas where the
teacher can improve and advise teachers if there are problems or issues she encountered.
Hence, the most successful educators I know are the ones who make concerted efforts to
be out and about around the school compounds. This can only be evident that she is truly
“The Highly Visible Principal”.

24

PUAN FONG LING LING
KETUA BIDANG KEMANUSIAAN

25

WEEK 7
MADAM JENNIFER ASING

EXCELLENT PRINCIPAL

She was a very detail-oriented person because she is very particular to completing
any tasks as flawlessly as possible. It means that every task submitted to her usually high-
quality work with little to no errors. I remembered how she told some teachers to fix and
complete the PBD files before handing them to her. She was very meticulous about every
detail of the file like how the file looked on the outside and how neat it can be arranged.
According to her, the finishing touch of any task reflects the teacher ’s personality,
dedication and responsibility. Well, I could not agree with her more. Any employee would
always expect to have employees that able to prove their attention to detail and ability to
hone in on how every aspect of the presentation.

26

PUAN MARIATUL HANIS MERANI ABDULLAH
KETUA BIDANG BAHASA

28

PUAN AUDREY CHERRY INSING
PEMBANTU PENOLONG KANAN PETANG

First and foremost, I truly admire Teacher Audrey for her exception and remarkable 29
guidance that she provided me. She inspired me the most and guided me a lot through her
mentorship. She gave me a lot of insight and examples on how to conduct the lesson that
emphasized on 21st century learning among the students. There were two of the most
creative pieces of teaching aids that she showed me which were “Make Someone Smile
Today” and “Grade Cards”. To me, the “Make Someone Smile Today” was truly innovative
and that require simple tools and little preparations. It only took a student an envelope and
some small pieces of paper which will be used to be distributed randomly to random fellow
classmates. This activity only allows students to write positive comments to whose the
envelope belongs to. Besides that, “Grade Cards” is another tool that she prepared herself
and laminated properly. The cards will be given to students as a medium for them to
evaluate their classmates presentations and simulations. According to her, most students
found themselves attached to this activity and sometimes would remind her to conduct this
a c t i v i t y.

Apart from that, she guided me on classroom management likes discipline the
students. There were times that she corrected and advised my mistakes immediately. I liked
her for correcting me and at the same time she even shared the similar mistakes she did
back then in her early teaching career which she received the same advice from her parents
too. These help me realized and reflect back my actions. I thought that she indeed very
good in advising people in a nice and unoffended way, Because to some people, some
constructive advice can be hard to be accepted and made them offended.

Next, I remembered she told me that a teacher should never afraid to discipline the
students if they misbehave as

well as rejects students’ works by telling them to redo if the students fail to fulfill the
requirements. A teacher should find alternatives to encourage good behavior among the
students. In this particular aspect, I observed that she was very consistent in her action
to discipline the students in and out of the class. The first example, she rejected some 2
Gemilang students’ PBL group works and asked them to redo until they meet the
requirements by explaining once again to them. According to her, most of the students in
this class usually failed in the first try but ultimately succeeded in second try once the
teacher discuss their mistakes and explain what they need to improve by giving more
examples. As she said, this class need progressive attention and guidance. Secondly, she
put efforts by identifying and listing down the students who failed to submit the
workbooks on time, then posted them in the Whatsapp Group to remind them to submit
them while they were still provided extended deadline otherwise they will need to stand
and conduct learning outside the class while facing the teacher. She told me to be strict
and firm with the punishments to those who did not pass up their workbook especially
Joshua. This was quite a new experience for me as it would also help to train me to be
courageous and not be too lenient on students otherwise these behaviors will get
prolonged and good behaviors will not be developed. Then, there was one time that I saw
her scolded Joshua and asked him to write a letter for unable to submit his works
although multiple chances had been given to him. Her being strict and firm made students
scared and respect her. During my fist week of practicum, when my turn to invigilate 1
Ikhlas examination, even with her presence passing outside the corridor made the
students went silent and describe her as a fierce dragon.

Lastly, she told me that a teacher must leave on time but never early as
scheduled. This is because every students was the responsibilities of the teacher who
scheduled to be in the class. These pieces of advices made me realize just the
consequences a teacher can do to impact on students’ learning and behavior.

WEEK 8
MADAM JENNIFER ASING

EXCELLENT PRINCIPAL

Empowering teachers was one of the qualities she had. I think it is just as important
to empower teachers at the school and driven their performances in the school. She would
tell or advise the teachers in order to help them to develop into becoming top performers
and do well in their works. She also address the problems associated with dissatisfying
performances or works with a positive attitude. I remembered how she able to handle one
teacher who did not perform well as well as his action of not informing to her about his
absence from the school. During the morning prayer, she asked Teacher Gabriel to inform
him to come and see her in the office. It displayed her professionalism, instead of
reprimand him directly in front of the teachers, by keeping the conversation remained
between her and the teacher in the office. I thought that she would want to listen to his side
of the story before coming to any conclusions. Well, her duty as the school leader is to
coach teachers by providing them with the direction to work hard and as well as to help
them to improve their performances.

31

MADAM FLAVIA IGNATIUS
PENOLONG KANAN HAL EHWAL MURID

Teacher Flavia is a sophisticated and outgoing person. For the
past 8 weeks, I saw her often drop by at the teachers’ office and have had
conversations with some of the teachers that she close with. Her
relationships with the teachers were great where I frequently saw her out
for lunch with a few of the teachers in the school canteen. They would
discussed a lot on the current issues and even able to joke around with
each other. From my observation, she is comfortable and confident
enough to speak with any individuals as she is a knowledgeable person
too.

Moreover, in my opinion, She always present herself elegantly and
looks presentable appropriate. Not only she looked physically
sophisticated, but also verbally which translatable through her body
language, body posture, facial expressions just all the parameters to
measure how sophisticated she is.

32

WEEK 9
MADAM JENNIFER ASING

EXCELLENT PRINCIPAL

I liked how she offered positive reinforcement to the teachers. Not only
she would make the effort of giving the teachers some advices but she would also
appreciate the teachers with some rewards. There were so many ways that she did to
show appreciation to teachers and often a simple thank you can make a teacher’s day.
Like teachers would reward their students, she held a special ceremony, “Hari Kualiti”,
by expressing her appreciation in presenting the certificate to the teachers during the
morning prayer. Her action not only boost the teachers’ morale and let each individual
know how much the school values them. Hence, as mentioned previously, positivity can
be great driving force and to cultivate a happy, productive, and success-driven working
environment.

33

MADAM JUDITH DONSIA

PENOLONG KANAN PENTADBIRAN

I was super grateful for Teacher Judith as she helped me a lot
during my entire practicum. She took good care of me and listened to my
sharing quite often whenever I had difficulties. I always come to her to
ask if Pengetua was not around the school. She was so fun and easy to
talk to because of her soothing voice. She used to share her opinion and
her teaching experience with me which gaveme some kind of
encouragement and motivation to be a good teacher. I remembered she
said that she found that being one of the school administrator was quite a
challenging task and that she loves children as much as she loves to
teach them in the classroom. She said that students were easier to work
with compared to working teachers. She mentioned that being one are like
actors in a play and that they need to role play in improvising and
adjusting their role whenever they need to work with fellow teachers.
Hence, she exposed me a lot in terms of the duties as the school
administrator.

Next, I often saw her coming in and out of the teachers’ office
discussing with some teachers regarding the school matters. She would
meet the teachers personally to discuss some school events that needed
to be changed or planned.

34

For instance, I remembered she talked to teacher Manimaran to revise the learning
schedule for there were two substitute teachers temporarily replacing two teacher who
were on their maternity leaves and another two trainee teachers coming for practicum.
Besides that, she met with Teacher Clare for informing her to revise the examination
schedule for the evening session as instructed by Pengetua to shift the date to two days
early from the original date. Hence, I observed her and found her to be very calm when
dealing with these teachers. She sometimes does being friendly and nice to all teachers,
which she able to differentiate the times when they can joke around and the times when
they need to discuss seriously.

Also, she can be straightforward, frank, and direct especially when she deal with
or realized unpalatable matters. She is honest but in a humorous way too. This is one of
her ways to genuinely correcting one’s performances or works. She and Pengetua are
very much alike and one can tell that they were experiences teachers.

WEEK 10
MADAM JENNIFER ASING

EXCELLENT PRINCIPAL

Earlier this year, the pandemic COVID-19 interrupted international travels, it 36
devastated the economic growth and even disrupted schooling globally. The school leader is
caught in an unfavorable position during the chaotic circumstances. I realized that she was
able to keep her open mindset, being able to work well under pressure while adjusting to
new and unexpected deadlines by prioritizing tasks. During the Conditional Movement
Control Order, schools around Kota Kinabalu were forced to be closed. Distributed
leadership has become the default leadership response in this current pandemic crisis. She
remains connected, shared, learned, and network her instruction with fellow teachers. Most
school leaders will be running on empty given myriad challenges that COVID-19 has caused
for them, so effective distributive leadership is now shall be connected, collaborative,
creative, and responsive which are necessities to survive via online gadgets.

In such disruptive times, she on this journey is defined by her dedication,
determination, hope, unshakeable belief that whatever happens, whatever the cost,
whatever the challenges, she will continue to do everything in her power to safeguard the
learning of all students. These were the qualities that I observed her through observing the
messages in Telegram and W hatsApp Group despite not being able to meet face-to-face in
person.

APPRECIATION

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your guidance and
mentoring throughout my practical sessions. During 1 week of being at SM ST
Micheal, Penampang

I was very impressed with the actions of the teachers eventhough with the new
Norma but still they carried out their duties as responsible teachers.

In addition, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers from the
Unit Guidance and Counselling SM ST Micheal for having given good guidance and
advice throughout the week.

Last but not least, I want to sincerely apologize for any shortcomings or
wrongdoings I have made. May we always be blessed and blessed. Once again, I
want to thank you so much for all the teaching.

My 1 week of Program Perantis Guru Reflection 45

Since I was a child I really aspired to be an educator and I did not expectthat I would
achieve that ambition soon. The journey to achieve the ambition is not easy, full
suspicions and twists. Especially during this pandemic but I am very grateful for
everything that has happened and I’m very sure that What has happened must have
been the goods part.

After a few months of studying at University Pendidikan Sultan Idris majoring in Bachelor
Guidance and Counseling, variety of knowledge I’ve gained. The opportunity to undergo
practical really made me a little nervous and excited at the same time. So I chose SM ST
Micheal as th e place for me to do my PPG because I often hear that this school was very
excellent in academic and co-curricular achievements.

Lastly, thanks to the outstanding principle Puan Jennifer Asing for every guidance
throughout the week. Not to forget also for my advisor teacher, Cik Goh Sia Phing and
Puan Seri Rahayu Bt. Iskandar. Hopefully I get this wonderful opportunity again one day,
thankyou.
