This book would not have been possible without the
help of Allah Swt., The Almighty God WHO give me happiness
and joy in running my life. My parents, my beloved mother,
Ibu Noorhaini Hasyim, my husband and children, family who
direct me to a true way and always pray for my
successfulness. My teachers who taught me how to teach, to
believe in myself and follow my heart. Thank you for their
unwavering support of my work and writing.

In addition, I would like to express my special thanks
and great appreciation to The Principal of SMA Negeri 1
Balikpapan, H. Seger Imam Suja’i, M.Pd and my fellow friends
for giving me support and advice to create a learning
innovation. A big gratitude is also intended to my beloved
students students of grade X and XI, who took part
cooperatively in expressing their brilliant ideas through their
outstanding papers. Finally, on a personal note, my special
gratitude goes to my beloved parents (my late father, mother
and father in law), all family I have whom I cannot mention
their names one by one.

My fondest hope is that this book will help many more
teachers and students define their own skills of effective
writing, develop their own positive talents and experience the
joy of writing, just as popular writer has.

I trully believe that teaching adult students is a noble
profession. Yes, the pay sometimes insultingly low, and
working condition can be appallingly shabby. However, I

don’t teach for the money or the glamour — I do it for the love
and so do my students, they learn everything from their
teachers sincerely.

PREFACE

THE PRINCIPAL OF SMA NEGERI 1 BALIKPAPAN

(create something outside the box) terhadap segala bentuk
informasi dan pengetahuan yang akan di transfer kepada
peserta didik.

Peserta didik secara tidak langsung berperan sebagai
sentra belajar yang siap menggali beragam informasi dari
berbagai sumber. Sudah saatnya guru dan siswa bekerja sama
mengemas pembelajaran berbasis kreatifitas, penemuan dan
pengembangan bakat serta kompetensi peserta didik,
sehingga akan bermuara pada sebuah kecakapan hidup (life
skill) di masa depan.

Sejalan dengan itu, saya menyambut baik dan
menghargai kerja cerdas dan kreatif guru dan para siswa SMA
Negeri 1 Balikpapan yang tergabung dalam KOMUNITAS
MEMBACA DAN MENULIS (RW.COM) dan telah melahirkan
beberapa karya inovatif. Satu diantaranya adalah Kumpulan
Essay Bahasa Inggris bertajuk “THE WHEEL OF MY DREAM
AND WISH” sebagai sarana pembelajaran yang pasti memiliki
kontribusi besar dalam membangun tata nilai pendidikan
serta mengubah pandangan dan pemikiran kehidupan

pembaca.
inovatif, kreatif, efektif, menyenangkan, gembira tapi
berbobot). Semoga karya guru dan para siswa kreatif ini
dapat menjadi sumber pembelajaran inspiratif yang
senantiasa diberkahi Allah Swt.

INTRODUCTION

Whenever I finish writing a book and face the task of
writing an introduction, my childhood comes back to haunt
me,” Don’t beep your own horn,” my parents used to warn
me,” People will assume you have a big head.”

I honestly don’t believe my head is extremely big. I
know that I’m not the best teacher in the world. There are
thousands of teachers in this country who do the same things
I do in my classroom, but they don’t have the time or energy
to go home lately at night and write books. To be honest, I’m
not the world’s best teacher, I’m just an ordinary teacher and I
know that my approach works. My brief philosophy is this:

When my students believe that success is possible,
they will try. So, my first teaching priority in any class is
to help my students believe in themselves and their
ability to learn by heart.

I approximately believe that most successful teaching
strategies can be tweaked to fit students across a wide range
of ages and abilities.

Teachers are teachers and students are students.
Regardless of their age, almost all students have the same
concerns: Will I be able to learn the material? Will I like the
teacher? Will my classmates like me? Several questions pop
up in their mind whether their existence in the classroom is
acceptable.

I still have much to learn as a teacher. I realized that
every class of students brings new lesson for me to learn. The
lessons are not really new, but a lesson may be new to me, or

~ ix ~

it may be a reminder of something I learn previously,
something that I did not take hold because it wasn’t
connected with a personal experience.

The title of this book, The Wheel of My Dream and Wish,
isn’t mean to imply that this book completely bring new ideas
of dreaming and wishing. What I mean to imply by the title is
that to encourage teachers and students to shift their focus so
that they can see themselves and their students from a
different perspective. Sending positive notes to the students
and stating that I (teacher) want to help my students learn the
skill of writing and again my approach works.

On the other hand, my heart sings when I received
many papers or stories talking about dreams and learning
experiences written by my students as what have been
printed in this book. I can’t thank them enough. I know they’re
very busy finishing up their tasks, but with their sincere heart,
they can finish their papers quickly. Thank you for showing
up your papers on time, I really appreciate it and feel proud of
you all. Besides, I’m certainly willing to grade you again and to
take part in the world of writing. I know you’re very
exhausted finishing your paper, but thought you would like to
know how much fun I’m having!

TEACHING, MY WOLRD OF
DEDICATION

Dayang Suriani

English Teacher

Each teacher can recount numerous highs and lows in their
teaching career. Personally, I experienced many great
moments while teaching adult students. These were days
when I finally ended so happy and enthusiastic that I knew I had
selected the right profession as a teacher and an educator. On
the other hand, I had days where I approximately questioned
teaching as a career. These were days where the students
seemed uninterested, too talkative, or even worse a blow up
occurred and nothing got accomplished. Teaching adult students
has many challengings. Through this story, I want to share ideas
and strategies if some teachers had problem like me dealing with
teaching adult students.

It was a miracle when the first ime I started teaching
English for my Senior High School students in a suburb school of
Balikpapan. I was a twenty one year old girl at that time, so my
age was not much different with the third grade students whose
age was about eighteen. They usually called me, ”a beautiful lady
from cassava island” since my school was closer to the cassava
plantation. I thought that it was a joke for me but they always
told it many times. Another boy students sometimes asked me

The Wheel of My Dream and Wish ~ 1

something for no reason. For instance, “Can I come to your
house on Saturday night?” It was such a weird question in my
ears since they were younger than me but they acted as a bold
man spoke to me. Hearing that question, I just kept in silence
and smiled at them. I just considered them all as my students not
more than that. As a matter of fact, I could see the feeling of
dissapoinment from their faces.

However, at the next day of my English class, something
terrible happened. Some boy students argued with one another
about my status. They seemed to talk about who was my fiance,
why I never showed him to them and even told a story about
him. For this reason, the boy students competed one another to
win my heart. Looking at that condition, I tried to make the
situation calm and let them concentrate to their real duty which
is studying English. I was happy seeing them listened to me
wisely. I innitiated an idea to teach them about recount text.
First of all, I let them change the pattern of the classical seat into
a big circle. The students just took the chairs and formed it like a
big circle. I stood up in the center of the circle. They looked
enthusiastic since it was the first time for them to have a seat
like that.

I walked around the class and told a story about my past
experience in selecting a man to be my future husband. I told
them a story about five men who came to my house to meet my
parents. They were from different ethnic, academic background,
status, and jobs. They asked my parents whether they had an
opportunity to be my man. Wisely, my parents just let me decide
it. I told them all that I still found it hard to select one of those
men since the criteria was still far from my expectation. I need a

2 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

man who would be my forever couple. He is the man who will
stay beside me when I am down and sad. He is the man who will
feed me when I cannot eat and do everything alone. He is the
man who will be my eyes in the darkness, my ears in crowded
situation and my body when I got suffered.

After telling my story, all students clapped their hands
while standing up. They seemed understood with all sentences I
spoke. Surprisingly, by teaching them about a recount text, I also
answered their questions about who will be the true man inside
my heart. In addition, I also told them the purpose of that lesson
and explained the generic structure of the recount text, based on
the story I told them. My class looked very interested in listening
to my story. They said to me that I had put them in a very
mentally comfortable situation. Besides, I also assigned them to
tell about their past experiences in turn as I did. At the end of
class activity, one student asked me, “Miss, do I belong to your
criteria?” I just smiled and answered his question by saying, ”If
God unite us, who can deny that?” Surprisingly, my answer made
all boy students happy and said “YES” together. Again, I smiled
at them and left the class swimmingly. I realized that if I allowed
my impatience to show, it would give tacit approval to my
students to dislike and disrespect me. So I started looking for any
small positive contribution that those boys made to me and I
made the point of thanking them in front of the other students. I
stopped thinking of his questions as interruption which in turn
changed my attitude.

The above story somehow made me realize that there
were so much more to everything around us. Knowing that there
are many things to see in my teaching world, there are so much

The Wheel of My Dream and Wish ~ 3

to reveal, I’ve dreamed of traveling more teaching ideas since
the day my father showed me the pictures he took in his
overseas missions whether in Indonesia or abroad, the pictures
told me about how important is knowledge if we can apply it in a
real life and share with others who need. The world is waiting for
us to be revealed, and those who took an action were the one
who deserved to see the hidden beauty in the real teaching
world, a comfortable classroom atmosphere.

I want to be a success teacher; I want to be one of those
lucky ones to enjoy the teaching world in such a way. However,
with over 2700 languages available in the world, I have to be
able to speak English properly to guide and ease my students’
understanding about such lesson. After all, my students will get
their own perspectives that English has been the language bridge
to connect people from different countries for ages. Cruising on
the gondola in Venice, camping in the seaside of Oman, or
whatever plans they would make later, an international language
will be needed. I don’t want to miss out an opportunity of doing
all that just because I lacked the ability of teaching English.

For this reason, I’m going to keep up my English, keep up
the good work by teaching my students creatively. I realize that
It would take hard work and dedication to do so, but I’m willing
to try my best. Why? Because all the sacrifices will be paid off by
God, The Almighty. I would accomplish my dream, I would go
and travel, and I would see things in a different perspective. I
would be amazed, I would be grateful, and I would be one of
those who realize what the teaching world is really worthy of. In
short, my 17 years of teaching and working in education, one
event stands above the rest as my absolute best teaching

4 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

experience. Through it I learned so much about teaching and
dealing with adult students. My hope is that the student involved
was at least partially changed for the better from the experience
as I was. I also hope that there is something in this story that can
help inform and inspire you. Perhaps one day, you will see me
somewhere, living my dream as an inspiring teacher. Hopefully!

MY TEACHING IS MINE

Dayang Suriani

English Teacher

During my first year teaching in the classroom, I confessed
to my master teacher, Prof. Suhardjono, that I was afraid
I wasn’t teaching my students enough. I explained that I
believed students should reach a minimum standard to achieve a
passing grade, but I wasn’t sure to myself where to set the
minimum standard for my different English clauses.

“Minimum standard of what?” my master teacher asked
me. He then continued asking.

“Commas, spelling, vocabulary?” Should a student know
for ways to use a comma and the correct spelling of four
hundred words? Should he know what defenestrating means?
What if he doesn’t know that particular word, but he knows a
thousand other ones? What is the standard?

“I’m not talking about the district’s objectives. I’m talking
about your own standards. What is it you expect those students
to know when they leave your class?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted,” but I worry about whether I’m
really teaching them anything.”

“All teachers and I surely wonder whether we were really
teaching anything,” my master teacher told me.

6 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

“I used to wonder it myself, hundreds of years ago when I
was your age. Then, I learned something important. You aren’t
just teaching English.

“What are you teaching?” You may ask.
“You’re teaching the students how to behave well.
Besides, you are teaching them how to analyze information,
relate it to other information they know, put it together, take it
apart and give it back to you in the form that you request it. It
doesn’t matter what the class is; we all teach the same things. As
a matter of fact, we just use different terms. You use commas
and adjectives; biology teachers use chromosomes and
chlorophyll; math teachers use imaginary numbers and
triangles.“
“The point is, you are also teaching an optional agenda;
you are teaching your students to believe in themselves and
raise their self-esteem. So don’t worry about whether you are
teaching the grammar. You’re teaching those students. Trust me,
you’re teaching them.”
After I had the chance to think about my master teachers’
comments, I realized that what he called the “optional agenda”
that answer the all important question: What do you want your
students to know when they leave your class?
“What do you want your students to know?” I asked
myself slowly.
Naturally, as an English teacher, I want my students to
have improved reading and writing skills, bigger vocabularies,
increased comprehension of abstract ideas, better thinking skills
and an appreciation for literature. So, I design specific lesson s

The Wheel of My Dream and Wish ~ 7

for vocabulary building and literary analysis and composing
logical arguments.

My answer to my master teachers’ question is the same
today as it was then: I want my students to have better academic
skills but I also want them to have a strong sense of their own
ethical standards, an unquenchable thirst for the knowledge, a
desire to succeed according to their own definitions of success,
good problem –solving skills, and the strength of character to
treat all people with basic human dignity and respect.

Honestly, I realized that values and ethics will shape my
teaching agenda. Even if I don’t intentionally try to include my
beliefs and attitude in my lessons, I will be there, hidden within
the context of the reading and writing assignments I select, in
the methods I use to determine who passes and who fails, in the
tone of my voice when I address certain students, and in a
thousand other subtle clues.

Consequently, I insist on myself that every single day I’ll be
teaching my students what I believe is important. I’ll be
conveying my own ethics, attitudes, beliefs, and moral values to
my students. If I can articulate my optional agenda, I use that
knowledge to enhance my teaching. Knowing my optional
agenda will also help me avoid unintentionally teaching my
students things I don’t want to teach them—which brings me to
the next area of consideration. I’m sure God will ease
everything I do.

DARE TO DREAM

Erika Adhisty

XI IPA

M ost of my friends told me, every single person in this
world has a dream to be a successful person. But I
think it's not the whole package. For my opinion,
everyone has a dream to have a life doing what they love.
Because not all people can live as they dream and not all rich and
successful people really like what they do in life. So for me, the
whole package about dream is having a good life as you wish.

I have a dream on my own. My dream is from easy to hard
and from possible to be impossible. When I was a little, I wish I
could be a doctor. It was cool to help others who are sick and
really need our help. It felt like super hero but with white
clothes. As I grow up, my dream has changed as my mindset
open. I realize, being a doctor is not really what I want. It was
just a little girl admiration to those people wearing white clothes
and helps others. Now, one of my dreams is to work in a big
company and have a wonderful family. I also wish I could meet
my idol, Greyson Chance. I’m saving my money so that I can
meet him in a person someday. He is one of people who really
influence my life beside my parents. Because of him I understand
how important and useful learning English are. If we can speak
English well, I believe we have a good chance to run a better life.
Last, my biggest dream is to make my parents proud of me. I

12 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

can’t thank them enough for their supports. For this reason, all I
can do now is stay focus on my dream, working on it and gain
the result for my self-reflection and evaluation.

Sometimes, it makes us sad since people laughed at our
dreams. They all said that it is impossible to reach a big dream
but you know what? Many people have proven it. They dream a
big thing and they make it happen. Just work hard, never give up
and pray to God. I’m sure we all can make our dreams work. Just
don’t let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big.

ABOUT THE WRITER

Balikpapan. She is the first child of two
children from Abdul Manaf and Siti Koriah.
Erika has a brother named Khalifatul Ardhi
Manaf. Erika completed her elementary

year, she is still in 2nd grade of senior high.
Erika had only one organization experience; she was
notated as OSIS Secretary in Junior High School. In Senior High,
she joins Civic Olympiad as her extracurricular. She got 2nd place
in the region competition with her team which brought them to
the province competition. Unfortunately, she did not get any
place with her team. The next year, Erika and her team got the
second chance to continue competing in provincial level,
somehow the competition is canceled. Due to new rules from

If I said “Dream”, what kind of word that comes to your mind
firstly? Is it an ambition? Hope? Something cool and amazing
or something that comes to your mind during sleeping time?
Yup, dream has so many meanings, yet it can tell you everything
in this world. Since a dream is about a freedom to choose and a
strong will, so certainly, every single person in this world has at
least one dream and I do too.

My dreaming is to become “something” to change this
world. I want to make my life existence is useful for others. I
want to make my mother and brother feel happy. For this
reason, I want to be a girl who can make others happy with my
job and ideas. Because I do like drawing, my dreaming job is to
be a fashion designer. Do you think a fashion designer can’t
make people happy? Well, you definitely wrong. When a fashion
designer makes great clothes, people will be amazed, and say
“What an amazing clothes” and smile. I know I have to face a
hard and long road to reach it. Of course, I really need someone
who can support me, take care of me, and push me so I’ll never
give up to reach my dream with my own hands. The one that can
make me comfortable and feel good is my mother. She’s the one
who can give me her best so I can step nearest to my dream.
She’s a really brave single parent. She dares to pick up the risks

so my brother and I could go to school and study perfectly.
Without her, I’m really nothing. She is the one who will come
and protect me when I got trouble. She struggled all her life time
just to make me happy.

In short, to reach my dream then to make it come true, I’ll
do my best and ask for help from others, especially from my
mother. She’s the only one that I can believe in sharing my heart
with her. However, I still have to learn how to live this life
successfully with my true power, my own power. Because there
will be the time that no one could help me. Consequently, next
time, I hope I have a full metal heart and dare enough to take
and face up problems and dangers with my inside power and
endowment given by God, The Almighty, The Most Gracious and
The Most Merciful.

A PRECIOUS MOMENT

Melinda Andriyati

XI IPA

I do believe that everyone has their own dreams. Dream is an
ambition which is wanted to do by people for their future. It
can be anything in any aspects, as long as it’s useful for them.
Here is the story of my dreams.

It started when I was in elementary school. I wanted to be
a teacher. I’ve tried so hard to reach it. At first, I wanted to
become a math teacher, but I’m also interested in Astronomy.
Unfortunately, all of my previous school didn’t have Astronomy
subject.

When I was accepted in SMAN 1 Balikpapan, I feel excited
since there’s Astronomy Olympiad. It’s one of the extracurricular
in SMANSA. But still I, as the one who really interested in
learning Astronomy, hope that Astronomy could become one of
main subject in school, and one of my wishes is I want to become
the one who gives a proposal to NASA for supporting Astronomy
in Indonesia to be better than before. However, to make it real, I
believe that I have to study hard to gain more knowledge and
sharpen my English ability, since English is an international
language that is used by people around the world.

I’ve studied English since I was in elementary school. After
studying English for almost 10 years, I can feel the advantages. I
can understand articles that are written in English, I can talk to a

The Wheel of My Dream and Wish ~ 19

foreigner even only once, I can easily browse some new
information and knowledge and the most advantage reason that
I feel is I can try to reach my dream from the beginning part.
Fortunately, I also join Reading and Writing Community which I
think, it will bring many beneficial to me especially in improving
my reading and writing skill. This activity is conducted in outdoor
situation where we feel relax reading some books and writing
our ideas in term of essay, article, story or poetry both in English
and Bahasa Indonesia. The result of my paper will be published
and sure there are many people read my ideas and it is a
precious moment I have ever had.

I believe that whatever my dream and whoever I am, I can
do it if I try, if I do my best, if I believe in myself, and always pray
for my success to God.

HOLIDAY’S SURPRISES

Laurencia Karenina Baskarani

X IPA 2

It all started when my Ompung (grandparents in Batak) said
that they missed my family and they wanted us to be there
with them on their 50th anniversary day. On December, after
the semester examinations, my family flew to Jakarta. It is my
family tradition to spend Christmas together. However, this time
my father couldn’t join us, because of working.

When the three of us, my mother, my sister, and I arrived
in Jakarta, we were welcomed by my cousins and my uncle. On
my first day there, we decided to stay at my uncle’s house, since
it’s close to the malls. After putting our luggage at her house, we
continued our activities at Taman Anggrek mall, since it’s near
and of course, there is Hoka-hoka Bento there. All of my family
knew that this restaurant is my favorite one, so they brought me
there. I spent three days at my uncle’s house, because I just
couldn’t wait to meet my closest cousins at my aunt’s house!

After moving to the second house, we decided to go on a
trip to Puncak. That’s the place I couldn’t deny. Even I was the
one who offered the idea to go there. We took a chance to go to
Kebun Raya Cibodas, where there was saying, ‘if there’s still
heaven on earth, it would be Kebun Raya Cibodas. We really
enjoyed playing around the waterfalls, seeing cherry blossoms
trees, took a peek at the cactus and the orchid’s collections, and

22 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

of course not forgetting how wonderful the view was, we took
some photos.

It had been two days we stayed at my aunt’s house,
suddenly, one morning; I found my mom was packing our
clothes. And then, out of nowhere, she said something that
surprised me. We were going to Medan! That’s where my
grandparents live, where we going to spend Christmas at, and
where the heaven of food places be. Of course my cousins were
going there too! We took a leave from Jakarta 2 days before 19th
December, the anniversary day.

I couldn’t stay calm when we were on the plane. It was
going to be my second time being at Medan. Arriving at my
grandparents’ house, we were welcomed by bright smiles from
my grandparents’ house, we were welcomed by bright smiles
from my grandparents and the other family relatives. I was
chatting and laughing with them when suddenly, I smelled
something delicious from the kitchen. I jumped from the sofa,
and then walked straight to the kitchen seeing my grandma was
coking and the food was almost ready. Without being ordered, I
prepared the table put some drinks and stand near it, until the
food was being placed on the table. Smelling the same smell, my
cousins started gathering too. Because we know, my
grandmother’s cooking’s are the best in the world. Probably,
they already beat chef Ramsey’s cooking’s’! At night we
prepared some food for the next day, since it’s the anniversary
day.

Suddenly, without knowing anything, my mother woke me
up and asked me to prepare myself. I saw some bags and
packings were at the terrace and I found caravan there. When I

The Wheel of My Dream and Wish ~ 23

asked what’s going on, they said that we were going on a trip to
Prapat. That’s where the heaven is, Lake Toba. We spent 5 hours
to reach there, we sang and laugh on the way there. When we
almost reach the place, I took a peek from the window to see the
lake and it sent shivers down my spine! It was so beautiful. I wish
I could live there. But, we weren’t staying at Prapat, we stayed t
my mother’s hometown. We celebrated the anniversary there! It
was a wonderful moment! We spent 5 days there and then we
went back to Medan to spend Christmas eve and Christmas
itself. It was so great to sing Christmas song with the people who
own beautiful voices, the Bataknese!

The next day, we were on a trip to Brastagi. I almost
vomited on the way, because of the road we were taking and
some hills. When we arrived at the amusement park, I was the
one who get down the caravan first. The air sent chills on me! It
was cold but the view was amazing. We played around 3 hours
and decided to stay one night there.

After spending a night, we went back to Medan and spent
the day before New Year. When the New Year ’s Eve came, we
took a chance to see the New Year’s view at Medan. It was
crowded. “ 5…4…3…2…1 Happy New Year!” people cheered. We
went back home and celebrated it together.

We returned to Balikpapan 3 days after that. My mother
cried when she parted with her parents. We went back to
Balikpapan and arrived in Sepinggan Airport, being welcomed by
my father. I missed him. My beautiful holiday ended there and
the following day I had to start the school days again.

THE OPENER OF OPPORTUNITY

Iren Christiany Sinaga

P eople who have million dreams still called as the
dreamers if they cannot accomplish their dreams. Trying
to achieve is the best way to change the word dreamer
becomes the leader. Trying to achieve is not as easy as turning
palms of hands. It needs perseverance and patience to be able to
grab it and one thing that really cannot be left behind is prayer.
Actually, because it is not easy to achieve a dream many people
are afraid of dreaming. Fear of failure and embarrassment to
people who already know the dream has become a regular thing
even among young and adults. What is wrong with dreaming?
Dreaming is free. There was only ourselves to fear because we
are the one who can hinder our dreams not others.

In my environment, if someone has a dream to study
abroad is so taboo. It seemed rarely or no people in my
environment have ever gone to study abroad, but I would never
be afraid to dream of studying abroad. I have never been afraid
to dream because I have my own motto "if you never try you
would never know." I took it from the cold play song. Without
trying, we will never know where it feels like a failed or succes
and how it feels to be a winner or people who lose but it must be
remembered that any failure will teach us all the truth.

26 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

I'm trying to reach my dream to study abroad. I tried,
learn, prepared myself to be able to do the test for getting
scholarship. However, there is one major barrier wall that would
destroy me if I do not devastated advance that can be mastered
English. Shall be in English for granted because English is a must
to gets a scholarship abroad, working in foreign companies, or
the simplest of which is visit to a country whose language is
different from our country.

Many reasons why we need to learn the English. The first,
English is an international language that has become the main
language spoken in the world. English supports existing language
that has been dominating the world with 360 million (2010)
people in the world house. In Asian countries, there are too
many countries that have made English as first and second
language like Philippines and Singapore.

In fact, about 80% of electronic information on the
Internet using the English language and about 20% in languages
other than English. It can be concluded it would be difficult to
obtain broad information if we are notable to master English
Inevitably there are a lot of electronic equipment has been
dominated by the use English in the process of it. The negative
impact we will find it harder to use electronic tools.

Scholarship opportunities and job are usually offered to
those people who can speak English. The world will give us full of
opportunity when we opened our mind to speak English. If we
can master English we will stick together to the people who can
do it. Eventhough, we learn a lot about English but do not forget
our official language which is Bahasa Indonesia. Agree?

NO DREAMS ARE TOO BIG

NO DREAMERS ARE TOO SMALL

Novianna Wahyu Wulandari

XI-IPA

I believe that everybody has their own dream. I have mine
too. I think that everybody should have their dream as the
main purpose of life. Because having a big great dream can
make your life will be more counted and you’ll also be more
enthusiasm day by day. Being here, in SMA Negeri 1 Balikpapan
is one of my dreams too. I know it might sound too simple but a
dream can be anything whether it’s big or not, isn’t it?

I’ve been dreaming so high. I started since I was in
kindergarten. I wanted to be a doctor. Well, some people told
me that I was too young to dream that big at that time. But I
don’t even see the point of that. It’s actually not just a childhood
dream because I still want to be a doctor up until now. But then,
my parents said that they afraid they can’t afford the cost of
medical majoring in college, which is so expensive. I was pretty
upset when they said that to me. However, lately I’ve been
thinking if I’m forcing myself to go to medical majoring, which
my parents can’t afford, it would be neglected and so would my
future. And I really don’t want to see my future as a mess.

As I stated before, my parent’s role in here is guiding me
to the right side if that is necessary. They actually give me a full

30 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

freedom (and responsibility also) to choose what I’m going to do
for life as long as it’s a good thing and they can afford it. One
thing that my father tells me a lot is don’t you ever measure
happiness by money. This makes me think a lot. But now I know,
because money is a number, and number is unlimited. So if you
measure your happiness by money, you wouldn’t achieve it.
Well, I can’t say that my family is wealthy and everything,
because I know it’s not our goal of life. And that thing that I said
is the reason. My parents also said that fortune is already
arranged by God. Well, it doesn’t mean that we don’t have to
work for that and just sitting here doing nothing. The point is we
don’t have to be so obsessed by money.

Now, dream as much as you can. If you can’t achieve it,
that’s alright, that means God has another plan for you. The
point of dreaming is to motivate you. Live your life like you’ll die
tomorrow and dream big like you’ll never die. I’m going through
my life. I’m still finding the key. I might choose the wrong keys
for several times before actually getting the right one. But I’m
sure, I’ll open the door of dreaming.

SUPPORT, BELIEVE AND HARD WORK

Jovita

XI IPA

Dream is something that we want to achieve, what we
want to have or what we want to do in the future.
Dream is a thing that can drive us to up and down in our
life. Everyone must to have one or maybe more than one dream.
Dream has a huge power to keep up our spirit to do so many
challenges that can lead us to the top of our dream. T o achieve
our dreams.of course we need to struggle and work hard for
that. How can we get what we want if we keep those kind of
things, like our laziness, our though heart and our selfish. It’s not
easy to achieve our dream, right?

To be honest I’m still not sure about what I want to be in
the future. However, I have a “Blue Print” of what faculty in the
university that I’d like to take later. Maybe I’m still not sure
about the occupation that I’ll be but at least I already knew
what’s my interest and talent in. My interest is in cooking and my
Mom said that I’m good at cooking. I often to cook for my family
and they said “Jovita your cooking tasted good.” and something
like that. So. In the university I will take Hospitality as my faculty.
I’m a little bit disappointed because I’m taking science class in
my senior high school. But my Dad said “You’re still young to
sure about that, just take science, you’ll use it in your future,
science student will accept in that class too. Don’t worry

honey.”. Hospitality, that’s what I will learn in my university. I’m
so grateful to have such an understand-able family like mine. My
Mom and Dad support me to reach my dream. Even I knew
deeply inside their heart, they want me to take Hotel
Management faculty. Luckily, I found that Hotel Management
also learn about cooking, how to serve the food to the customer
and so many things that I’d love to learn. So, now I feel thanks to
my parents for lead me to something that I really want to learn.

Right now, I’m 95% sure to take Hotel Management as my
faculty later. Mom and Dad really know about what I like or
dislike. They really know about me. I know they already plan the
best future for me and my older sister. They really know about
their kids. My sister is in university now and she’s also 100%
supported to take what she wants to learn. If we want to get
what we want, we also have to sacrifice for that. Mom and Dad
hope the best for us, they teach us a lesson that we won’t be
able to get in school. They taught us a “life lesson.” How to be
good, how to have a kind-hearted behavior and many things we
learn from home, family and our parents. They also told us how
big the power of our hope, dream and believe, and we also have
to sacrifice for all of that. But if we work hard and believe in our
dreams and prayers, we will get the best result in our life.

Parent’s prayer is a really powerful thing. They did not just
support us for the cost, for the life lessons also they support us
by their prayers. I really love my parents, they’re the most
important thing in my life and support me to get my dream.
They’re the apple or my eye. 

BE PLUNGED INTO THE WORLD OF
VOCAL

Stevefanus Yanli

XI IPA

You might think that I was born to be a singer and a
musician. You can see now that I have a good voice, I can split
my voice as a choir does, even I have made my own song that
also sung by me. But, do you know what I had done until I get my
good voice? You don’t know what I had done? That’s okay,
because now, I’m going to tell you about it. This story started
when I was in elementary school, specifically when I studied in
my 6th grader.

I was obsessed to sing in 2009, the year when Michael
Jackson got an overdose and died. And because of his death,
cassettes contained his songs were resold and bought by a lot of
people, included me. After I bought the cassette, I started to like
some of his songs such as “You are not alone”, “We are the
world”, “Will you be there”, “Earth song”, and many else. Then, I
started to cover his songs and recorded it. After I had sung some
of his songs, I showed some of my recordings to some of my
friend in my school. But the only thing that I had got when I
showed my recordings is scorn instead of kudos.

Those scorns didn’t make me to surrender, but started to
sing more instead. In 2010, Indonesia was broadcasting a talent

36 ~ The Wheel of My Dream and Wish

show called “Indonesia Mencari Bakat”. I had followed the show
and I had chosen my idol on that show. My idol on that show
was Putri Ayu, an opera singer. While I was watching that show, I
was wondering I could compete in a competition of talents like
she did, especially in a singing competition. After a long time, I
started following her way of singing opera. At my house, I sang a
lot of songs in opera to make my voice became better. On the
contrary, I still got a lot of scorns, or probably more than I had
before. But for this time, I also didn’t surrender to learn how to
sing perfectly.

I kept searching some sources about how to sing perfectly,
until I found two singers that had influenced me to be a singer.
They were Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Both of them have a
same technique to sing which is called “Upper Chest Voice”.
Upper Chest Voice is a technique which uses the chest for
breathing that also combined with a high note. In the social
media, they are respected as a high-class singer. I started singing
like they did when I was in 1st grader of Junior high school, in
2011. I kept singing in every single day to make my voice higher
and louder as they did. However, for the third time I was scorned
by my friends from my Junior high school. They said that
probably I had broken their ear drums, they also commanded me
to stop singing for a while because I was too much obsessed to
sing. Sometimes, I realized that I sang too much until I had made
people disturbed because of my voice but, I still continued doing
my obsession until 2012, when I studied in 2nd grader of Junior
high school.

Day by day, many people hated my voice, because my
voice was very awful. Slowly, I was getting down and became not
