THOSE REMARKABLE 40 YEARS IN
HUMAN HISTORY : 1857-1897

Dr. Arup Kumar
Associated Professor
Dept. of Physics, GZRSC

It is quite amazing to know that, the greatest personalities of India, to whom we
owe most, were all born in a particular span of time of only 40 years in human
history. That period is : between years 1857 and 1897. Also some of the greatest
scientists of the world were also born during that period of time. These persons
are termed as the greatest in the history as their thoughts and works contributed
most for the human civilizations. They are from the fields of science, literature,
mathematics, religion, philosophy and politics.

In this article, I mention their names with date of birth and briefly depict the
biggest contributions they made in their life. First I mention the 12 greatest sons of
India, whose contributions are so important that, their names will be remembered
for ever. I then mention 20 greatest scientists of the world, mostly Physicists and are
almost all Nobel laureates. The names are listed in order of seniority.

12 Greatest Indians :

1. Jagadish Chandra Bose ( Born : 30.11.1858 ) : Plant
physiologist and physicist whose invention of highly sensitive
instruments for the detection of minute responses by living
organisms to external stimuli enabled him to anticipate the
parallelism between animal and plant tissues noted by later
biophysicists. Bose's experiments on the quasi-optical
properties of very short radio waves (1895) led him to make
improvements on the coherer, an early form of radio detector,
which have contributed to the development of solid-state
physics.

2. Rabindranath Tagore ( Born : 7.5.1861) : Poet, short-story
writer, song composer, playwright, essayist, and painter who
was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore
introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial

123

13th Annual Magazine 2014-2015 Govt. Zirtiri Residential Science College

language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from
traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. An
accomplished artist, he is credited to have introduced the
best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa.

3. Prafulla Chandra Roy (Born : 2.8.1861 ) : The legend
Indian chemist, academician and entrepreneur. He was the
founder of India's first pharmaceutical company - the Bengal
Chemical Works. He discovered mercurous nitrite and
Indian calcium tonic. Apart from a great scientist, he was
also a staunch freedom fighter and a great science
populariser.

4. Swami Vivekananda ( Born : 12.1.1863 ) : Original
name Narendranath Datta; epoch-making spiritual leader
of India who made Hinduism dynamic and practical, and
urged modern humanity to combine Western science and
materialism with India's spiritual culture for a sustainable
civilization. He declared that science and religion go
together only on the foundation of Advaita (monistic)
Vedanta with its fundamental ideas of an impersonal God,
the presence of the infinite within the finite, and a basic
interconnectedness of everything in the universe.

5. M. K. Gandhi ( Born : 2.10.1869 ) : Byname Mahatma
Gandhi , leader of the Indian nationalist movement against
British rule. Internationally esteemed for his doctrine of
non-violent protest (ahinsha) to achieve political and social
progress. For him truth was not something to be discovered
in the privacy of one's personal life; it had to be upheld in
the challenging contexts of social and political life. In the
eyes of millions of his countrymen, he was the Mahatma
(the great soul) and is considered the father of the nation.

6. Rishi Aurobindo ( Born : 15.8.1872 ) : Original name
Aurobindo Ghose , was a seer, poet, and Indian nationalist
who propounded the philosophy of cosmic salvation
through spiritual evolution. Aurobindo created a dialectic
mode of salvation not only for the individual but also for all
mankind.

12th Annual Magazine 2014-2015 Lighted to Lighten

7. S. Ramanujan ( 22.12.1887 ) : Mathematician whose
contributions to the theory of numbers include pioneering
discoveries of the properties of the partition function.
Ramanujan's knowledge of mathematics was startling.
Although almost completely ignorant of what had been
developed, his mastery of continued fractions was
unequalled by any living mathematician. He worked out
the Riemann series, the elliptic integrals, hypergeometric
series, the functional equations of the zeta function, and
his own theory of divergent series.

8. Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman ( Born : 7.11.1888 ) :

Physicist, the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in

1930, discovered that when light traverses a transparent

material, some of the light that is deflected changes in

wavelength. This phenomenon is now called Raman

scattering and is the result of the Raman effect. He was

awarded "Bharat Ratna" in 1954. His remarkable

achievements brought international recognition and glory

to Indian Science. Every year on 28th February the

National Science Day is celebrated in India to commemorate

the discovery of Raman effect.

9. Jawaharlal Nehru ( Born : 14.11.1889 ) : Also Called
Panditji, Nehru was the first prime minister of independent
India (1947-64), who established parliamentary government
and became noted for his "neutralist" policies in foreign
affairs. He was also one of the principal leaders of India's
independence movement in the 1930s and 1940s.

10. Meghnad Saha ( Born : 6.10.1893 ) : Astrophysicist
noted for his development in 1920 of the thermal ionization
equation, which has remained fundamental in all work on
stellar atmospheres. Widely applied to the interpretation
of stellar spectra, the Saha equation links the composition
and appearance of the spectrum with the temperature of
the light source, and can thus be used to determine either
the temperature of the star or the relative abundance of
the chemical elements investigated.

11. Satyendra Nath Bose ( Born : 1.1.1894 ) : Indian
physicist noted for his collaboration with Albert Einstein
in developing a theory regarding the gas-like qualities
of electromagnetic radiation. His numerous scientific
papers (published from 1918 to 1956) contributed to
statistical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of
the ionosphere, the theories of X-ray crystallography and
thermoluminescence, and unified field theory. Bose's
Planck's Law and the hypothesis of Light Quanta (1924)
led Einstein to seek him out for collaboration.

12. Subhas Chandra Bose ( Born : 23.1.1897 ) : Also called
Netaji or the respected leader. He was an Indian
revolutionary who led an Indian national force against the
Western powers during World War II. A few days after
Japan's announced surrender in August 1945, Bose, fleeing
Southeast Asia, reportedly died in a Japanese hospital as a
result of burn injuries from a plane crash. Mystery still
surrounds Netaji's death. Numerous enquiries have been
set up to find out the truth regarding his disappearance after
the air crash in 1945 but the debate remains unsettled.

by his discovery of the electron (1897). He received the Nobel
Prize for Physics in 1906 and was knighted in 1908.

4. Max Planck ( Born : 23.4. 1858 ) : German physicist who
founded quantum mechanics in 1900, showed how the energy
of a photon is directly proportional to its frequency, won him
the 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics. He then used his quantum
theory to formulate Planck's radiation law, thereby resolving
the ultraviolet catastrophe.

5. W. H. Bragg (Born : 2.7.1862 ) : British scientist in solid-

He was knighted in 1920.

6. W. H. Nernst (Born : 25.6. 1864 ) : German Chemist who
was one of the founders of modern physical chemistry. His
formulation of the third law of thermodynamics gained him
the 1920 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Simply stated, the law
postulates that, at a temperature above absolute zero, all matter
tends toward random motion and all energy tends to dissipate.

7. Marie Curie (Born : 7.11.1867 ) : French physicist famous
for her work on radioactivity and twice a winner of the Nobel
Prize. With Henri Becquerel and her husband, Pierre Curie,
she was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics. She was
then sole winner of the 1911 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. She
was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.

8. Ernest Rutherford ( Born : 30.8.1871) : Physicist from New
Zealand, considered "Father of Nuclear Physics", showed how
the atomic nucleus has a positive charge, first to change one
element into another by an artificial nuclear reaction,
differentiated and named alpha and beta radiation, awarded
Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908.

9. Albert Einstein (Born : 14.3.1879 ) : German-born physicist
who developed the special and general theories of relativity
and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his explanation
of the photoelectric effect. Einstein is generally considered the
most influential physicist of the 20th century.

peculiar to waves that is widely exploited in determining the
atomic structure of solids and liquids.

18. Louis de Broglie (Born : 15.8.1892 ) : French physicist best
known for his research on quantum theory. He first proposed
that matter has dual nature i.e. particle nature and wave
nature. When a particle moves an wave is associated with it,
called 'matter wave' and finally it led to the discovery of the
wave nature of electrons. He was awarded the 1929 Nobel
Prize for Physics.

19. Sir Edward V. Appleton (Born : 6. 9. 1892 ) : British
Physicist. Awarded Nobel Prize in 1947 for his discovery of
the so-called Appleton layer of the ionosphere, which is a
dependable reflector of radio waves and as such is useful in
communication. This discovery made possible more reliable
long-range radio communication and aided in the
development of radar.

20. A. H. Compton (Born : 10. 9. 1892 ) : American physicist
and winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1927 for his
discovery and explanation of the change in the wavelength
of X rays when they collide with electrons in metals. This so-
called 'Compton effect' confirmed the dual nature of
electromagnetic radiation as both a wave and a particle.

PERSONAL GROOMING

Lalmalsawmi
Associate Professor
Department of English

According to a research by Albert Mehribian, Professor at the Unviersity of
California, Los Angeles, upon meeting someone for the first time we form an
opinion of them within the first 30 seconds.

While some of that opinion is based on what they say, the majority (55 percent) is
shaped bytheirappearance. No doubt wardrobe plays an important role in appearance,
but it’s often personal grooming (and hygiene) that makes the biggest impression.

So, what is personal Grooming? Personal Grooming is the term for how people
take care of their body and appearance. Yet personal grooming not only means
looking neat and good but it is actually much more than that. You can only look
completely groomed when you are likeable, interesting and pleasant to be around
with. In fact, a large share of our happiness and success depends on how well we
interact with others.

Here are some very basic personal grooming tips for making sure you create
or leave a lasting impression on others :

First and foremost, Bathe, Bathe, Bathe………regularly

LOOKS

Face : Your face is the first point of contact when you meet someone. Keep your
nostrils clean, no crust on your eyes, eyebrows trimmed, no residue on your teeth.
If you’re using make-up, it should look natural, not too bold or bright and certainly
no smudges.

Skin : Skin should look clean-not sweaty or sticky. Regular exercise and good
sleep do the trick.

Hair : Clean, neat and tidy is how you should keep your hair. Maintain a neat
hairstyle. Bangs are okay so long as they don’t fall on your face. That’s simply
irritating. Boys/Men should not wear too queer a hair style.

133

13th Annual Magazine 2014-2015 Govt. Zirtiri Residential Science College

Hair Removal : Unwanted facial hair or hair on other parts of the body needs to
be attended to. Facial hair (including ear and nostril) should be neatly trimmed.

Nails : Nails should be always clean and shaped. Avoid dirt under your nails.
Whether nails should be long or short depends on your lifestyle. Do not forget
your toe nails.

Feet : No cracked heels. No dirty toenails Avoid smelly socks.

Shoes : Don’t wear shoes that make you limp or drag your feet. Shoes should be
neat and clean, well polished. Wear appropriate shoes for the right occasion.

Smell good : Bathe regularly and go easy on your perfumes. Over-scenting can
be just as offensive as unpleasant body odour.

Posture : One should sit or stand upright. A person who droops or slouches comes
across as a lazy person. Regular exercise will give you good posture as exercise
affects your core muscles. Move with grace.

Dental hygiene: Always maintain fresh breath. Avoid foods with strong odours
such as coffee and onions. Use mints or a breath freshener after meals and before
meetings. Avoid looking like a cow. Never chew chewing gum in a workplace.

Dress : Personal grooming also implies dressing well elegantly and appropriately.

Dressing well does not necessarily mean dressing up. If you dress well it
shows you love and respect yourself. Attractive personalities are always dressed
well. Your clothes need not be expensive but make sure they are well-ironed, not
wrinkled but crisp. Threads hanging from the hems and seams look unbecoming.

During interviews, wear sober colours like white, beige or cream. Team them
up with safe colours like black or blue. Your choice of clothes should both exude
good taste and also reflect your personality and style. Wear an outfit that suits
and enhances your body type.

Personality Grooming:

Attitude (Believe in yourself) : Trust your capabilities, talents and skills. Have
faith in what you do. Adopt a “Yes, I can do it” attitude and the journey to your
destination will be smoother. Winston Churchill rightly said, “Attitude is a little
thing that makes a big difference” More than your aptitude, it is your attitude that
determines your success. Think positive, see opportunity in every difficulty.
Nobody wants to hang around with someone who’s a constant cribber. Have a
positive attitude.

134

12th Annual Magazine 2014-2015 Lighted to Lighten

Read and have an opinion : Reading enhances, (titam, belchhah) your intellectual
capacity and enables you to look at things from different perspectives. It refines
the way you think, speak and act. The more you read, the better you are able to
converse with others. Whatever you read, do reflect on it and form an opinion on
the matter. People respect those who voice their own opinions and can back their
views with reasoning.

Show pleasant manners : Remember to say the three magical words-‘Please,’ ‘
thank you’ and ‘sorry’ irrespective of who the other person is. Don’t forget your
etiquettes at all times. Be a good listener. Speak only when the other person has
finished speaking. Smile a lot. People are genuinely attracted towards someone
who is happy and pleasant. At the end of the day, a well-read person with pleasing
manners always exudes confidence and charm.

Lack of personal grooming is easily identified and will ruin your appearance:
Here are some examples:

Clothes that are not ironed
Dirty fingernails or chipped nail polish
Untidy hair and make up
Dirty, scuffed shoes that screams for polish
A lone thread hanging from the hems of your clothes.
Lipstick that profusely bleed
Uneven patches on face
Weak and frayed collars
Faded clothes
Some residue on the teeth
Stray hair on the nostril
Untrimmed hair on the ear
Bad breath
Body hair around the neck (men)
Bangs that need to be swept away from the face
A run (san) in the stockings or socks.

Change your working Style

(1) First, you should learn to give priority to work according to its importance. For
this make a “TO DO LIST” which is a list of all your daily work and then arrange
them as per its priority in the Priority Column. Now after completing the list,
try to complete these priorities one by one as per the list. While doing so you
must take care that you complete all your daily work on the same day itself.

(4) Learn to say ‘No’ with a smile.

(5) Delegate. Trust others like assistants colleagues and other family members to
get your work done.

(6) Keep a record of every minute spent.

(7) Remember that Time Management refers to ‘Effective Working’ and not ‘Fast

Master the above 7 points and it would become easier for you to change your
method of working.

How much time have I wasted today?

To answer this question, here are some helping questions:
1. Can I wake up one hour earlier ?
2. How much time have I wasted watching TV?
3. How much time have I wasted on whatsapp or facebook?
4. How much time have I wasted unnecessarily on the telephone?
5. Did I prepare a To-do-list?
6. If so, did I stick to that ?
7. How many tasks / jobs have I actually managed to do?
8. Did I laze around doing nothing fruitful?

Always ask yourself, “Right now, what could be the best use of my time?”
Ability to give only one clear answer for this question and then acting promptly
towards that work will play an important role in your success.

REFLECTIONS

Lalrinsangi Nghinglova
Associate Professor

Those by-gone years
Before the invasion of technology,
Where friends met face to face,
And not through a computer screen.
Where watching television meant,
Sitting together in one room as a Family,
Better still, neighbours gathering at one place.
Where the people close to your heart ,
Were the people close to your house,
the ones you share your “sa-um”with.
Sunday evenings saw us gathering at the streets,
Boys and girls alike, playing ‘kawi bah”,
Joking ,laughing ,gossiping, all in good company.
My heart often yearns for those by-gone years,
The beauty of which our children may never know

The Wait

The day my Lord waited for me
My first born, he struggled in pain,
Because, as a mother ,I couldn’t let go.
I prayed that he be healed,
As God had healed many in the past.
But it was not to be.
The pale face of my 13 days old baby,
The struggle he made to take even one breath
His weak little moaning, his hungry mouth looking for milk,
Yet could not suckle for Want of breath.
His life still hanging on by a thread,

Only because ,as a mother I could not let him go.
All this time my God waited for me,
Not cruelly snatching away my baby.
But waited,like a Gentleman ,till I found
Enough courage and peace to give him up.
The sight of my baby, struggling in pain
Tiny hands receiving blood, voice weakened by endless moaning
Finally became too much for a mother to bear.
Closed the door and fell on my knees,
Prayed to God to take him if there be no chance of recovering
The same prayer said with my hands placed on his tiny forehead
In a few minutes my Lord gave him rest and took him home
On that day, long ago ,when My Lord waited for me.

A Rose

A withering Rose,
Its beauty unacknowledged,
nonetheless ,undeniable.
It lends its beauty
to the ungrateful world.
Trampled upon by ignorant passers-by,
It only gives out its scent.

That ‘s what she is,a rose.
She gives up her smile,
to put a smile on their lips.
She gives up her desires,
to fulfill their desires .
She gives and gives,
till she is spent.

Like the rose whose beauty
they look for after it is gone.
They will look for her ,
Only after she is no more.
They will appreciate her,
Only after she has withered away.
A withering rose, that’s what she is.

Would you still love me,
If your name I forget?
Would you disown me
If what I say and do embarrass you ?
Would you still consider me your own
If I become stubborn and throw tantrums?
I need you to love me ,
because it will only be your love,
That sustain me and restore my self-respect.
(inspired by a conversation about dementia)

Showered with praise and eulogy,
Abused with curse and profanity,
She swings between pride and humility.
Not knowing where she belongs,
she stares in blank absurdity.

Woman

She bore scars, giving birth to your child,
She grew wrinkles, worrying about you and your children,
She has become weak, because time has eaten away her energy,
Her hair slowly turning grey, her dignity in your hands.
Cherish your woman,be it your wife or your mother,
One day she will be here no more.

Photo shopped faces,
creating illusions of beauty.
What a disappointment for some,
These faces would be in reality.
Bringing to mind the truth of the old saying,
All that glitters is definitely not Gold.

Leisure is most treasured after hard work,
Peace after periods of unrest,
Love after having experienced hatred,
Good health after a bout of sickness
This must be why God created opposites,
To make us appreciate what we “have” after not “having” it

Unanswered prayers

Had God answered all our prayers,
A thousand times would I have died .
For In moments of utter sadness and loneliness.
Had I prayed to Him to give me rest.
But He in His Divine Wisdom and Love,
Had often chosen to lend me a deaf ear ,
So I could live a happy life, I had often not foreseen.
It is thus a blessing to have some prayers ignored,
For He alone knows what’s best for us,
And so willing is He to give us His best,
For in giving us His son,He gives Himself to us

A Prayer

Let my eyes be blind to sights that haunt me,
Let my ears be deaf to words that hurt me,
Let my heart be numb to feelings that break me,
Let my feet be slow to walk towards paths of destruction,
Let my hands be timid to perform acts that I will regret,
Let my eyes see, earshear, heart feel acts of love ,kindness and compassion,
So that my days be spent in contentment, and my nights pass by in peace

Verses unedited
Emotions not recollected,
Perfect in their imperfections,
For they find expression from an imperfect soul.

Sleep deprived eyes,
Blankly staring at the rising sun,

Pain inflicted by Love,
Deeper than the wounds of hatred.

Rooms emptied.
