Jones & Horan Official Grading System:

“Running” only means that the balance and escapement are performing in healthy fashion and without apparent defect,
but does not guarantee timekeeping or warrantee future performance; unless otherwise noted, our timepieces are not
serviced by us, and we do not know when they were last serviced from our sources. We do our best to indicate any
potential problems or needs for repair.

The Jones & Horan plain English grading system follows this general order from top to bottom for mvts, component parts,
metal dials, hands and cases: Mint | Nearly Mint | Excellent | Fine (the average grade for most used, running
watches) | Fair | Poor. We then describe any salient defects that should be called to the attention of the potential buyer.

With respect to wear, we also use the following terms in order: No wear | Hardly any wear | Very little wear | Little
wear | Very light wear | Light wear | Medium wear | Ample wear | Substantial or abundant wear | Worn out. These
general terms are used in combination with precise descriptions of defects for further elaboration where needed.

Enamel dials are not necessarily graded, but called “flawless" when free of cracks, chips or hairlines, which are structural
and always noted. As-made in the factory finish imperfections or graphical defects may be present on a "flawless" dial and
may be noted separately.

The term, “Good,” is used to indicate that the watch or its function is doing what it should be doing, as in “good repeat
function and tone,” “good chronograph and date functions,” etc. These functions are not rated or graded. “Good crystal”
means without meaningful defect.

Jones and Horan uses these Standard Bid Increments:

$10 - $200 $10 increments $2,001 - $10,000 $200 increments

$201 - $500 $25 increments $10,001 - $20,000 $500 increments

interior with the same markings repeated in gold foil, interior has a lower level for eight 16S watches

and a removable upper tray that can hold eight 16S or 18S watches, the lower level slots measure

approximately 55mm each in diameter, upper level slots measure approximately 54mm each in

63 diameter, case measures approximately 10.75 inches x 6.5 inches x 2.5 inches. A scarce and very $350 -
attractive piece for the Hamilton collector, these were identified in Hamilton literature as "Leather $700

Salesman Sample Case for 16 Watches." These salesman's cases are often found with issues such as a

missing inner tray and/or with substantial exterior finish loss, and finding examples such as this in

excellent condition throughout is quite challenging. From the well-known Hamilton collection of

Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Exterior in excellent overall condition with some typical

mild scratches and scuffs, few small bits of finish loss; interior in excellent condition.

64 Book - "Nouveau Manuel Complet de L'Horloger" (New Complete Manual of the Watchmaker) by $150 -

MM. Séb, Le Normand and Janvier, revised and enlarged, by M. D. Magnifier, published 1850 in $300
Paris, France, measures 5-3/4th inches x 3-3/4 inches x 1-1/4 inches, nearly contemporary binding as
the first copies were published around 1836, 13 engraved plates folded into the book with diagrams
detailing different aspects of watchmaking, text is entirely in French, quarter calf with marbled boards
and end papers, gilt embossed labels on the spine with sprinkled edges. The leather shows
significant wear, two labels within the compartments on the spine are still mostly intact, front board
has come detached at the joint and is loose; few scattered spots of spill-burn which adds to the history
of this book as most likely a watchmaker working by candlelight would have been the cause of the
marks; few pencil markings to the first end paper, written in French, as well as "295," that being a
bookseller's price for this rare copy.

Book - "Prize-Essay, A Practical and Theoretical Treatise on the Detached Lever Escapement for

Watches and Timepieces," by Moritz Grossmann, Watch Manufacturer, Glashütte, illustrated by 20

engraved plates and numerous wood cuts and table, author's English edition, printed by G. Kreysing

1866, first American edition, essay awarded by the British Horological Society for Grossman's

technical explanation of the workings of the new escapement, bound in half calf with marbled boards

and endpapers, gilt embossing to the spine, measures 8-3/4 inches x 5-3/4 inches x 5/8 inches. This

65 publication would go on to be used as a textbook on the subject in later years, very few originals $150 -

exist, and inserted within this copy is a hand-written notes sheet. Ample wear to the leather at the $300

corners of the boards and to the joints and edges of the spine, small rip in the leather to the front

board's bottom corner; marbled boards have scattered scratches and light spots of rubbing; the pages

within exhibit areas of foxing, scattered pencil markings concentrated mostly to the beginning and

end papers; obituary of author tipped in to inner front board; the paper at the inner hinge is starting

to roll away slightly from its place; two small tears, one to the first end-paper, the second small tear

located to the last end paper; few scattered specks of mold; book also has a distinctive odor.

American Pocket Watches Part 1 of 3

Waltham, one-minute repeater with split-seconds chronograph and 60-minute register, at least 17J,

16S, massive 18K gold original HC with gold cuvette as well as glazed observation cover over mvt,

white enamel DS canister style (snap-on) dial, SW-LS, non-magnetic alloy balance and hairspring,

fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#3793205. Gross weight of assembled watch 115.2 dwt

(179.2 g). An important and exceedingly rare watch, we are aware of the existence of only two

examples of the Waltham one-minute repeater with split-seconds chronograph. The single other

example we have encountered was sold by Sothebys in 2004 and is serial number 3793206

(consecutive to the presently offered watch) which was formerly a part of the Rockford Time

Museum collection and is noted in Donald Hoke's "The Time Museum Historical Catalogue of

American Watches" as having a case that is "reconstructed" with "new covers, bow, crown, & stem."

In contrast, the presently offered example, serial number 3793205, is notable for its superb condition

89 throughout including its very heavy original gold hunting case made by prestigious New York $40,000 -
casemaker Jeannot & Shiebler. In all an exquisitely beautiful piece that ranks among the most $60,000
exceptional American watches in existence, this watch has been owned by our consignor since the

mid-1970s and we are honored to offer it here to the collecting community in its first marketplace

appearance in over 40 years. Mvt: Running, good repeat function and superb tone, during our

rigorous testing we operated the repeat function numerous times and only a small handful of times we

observed a striking of one minute apart from correct time, otherwise strikes were precise and

complete, good chronograph and split-seconds function, good register function, virtually mint

cosmetic mvt condition overall, superb lustrous surfaces with few small micro-fine scratches, very
small fine scratch near main plate’s edge above serial number; virtually flawless dial with only a few

micro-fine glaze scratches of negligible effect to appearance; mint hands, timekeeping and sweep

hands are plum colored, 60-minute register hand is blue; case shows hardly any wear, a mild very

shallow dent toward left perimeter of rear visible as a slight ripple in reflected light at this position;

tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystals.

Hamilton, Grade 947 "Extra," 23J, 18S, 14K multicolor gold box hinge original HC with yellow gold

buck to rear surrounded by multicolor floral detail, front with rose gold shield surrounded by

multicolor floral detail, fancy white enamel SS dial with gold foil numerals against light blue

backgrounds, light blue color and gold foil decoration at center, gold foil minute markers, SW-LS,

fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, ornate nickel damascene, s#239373. Gross

90 weight of assembled watch 97.9 dwt (152.3 g). A beautiful example of this extremely rare watch, the $8,000 -
total production of the Grade 947 is 310 made but only a very small fraction of these were marked $15,000

"Extra." This particular serial number is listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as being a Grade 947

that was sold to A.N. Anderson of Minneapolis, MN on April 8th, 1914. From the well-known

Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic

mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces with some typical fine and micro-fine scratches, small

bit of abrasion to inner edge of barrel bridge adjacent regulator adjustment screw, some oxide to

regulator spring; virtually flawless dial with few micro-fine scratches; nearly mint hands; case shows
hardly any wear, dings to upper portion of front, few mild dings to perimeter of cuvette, dents to band
at 5 and 7, superb engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; clean plastic crystal.

Hamilton, Grade 951 (marked), 23J, 16S, gold-filled Philadelphia Watch Case Co. HC, fancy white

enamel SS dial with two shades of gold foil decoration, fancy gilt Louis XV style hands, SW-SS,

fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#81936. An

extremely rare top grade watch, the pendant-set Grade 951 has a total production of only 44 made

which places it among the absolute rarest grades of 16 size Hamilton production (tied in rarity with

the 17 jewel Hayden W. Wheeler lever-set which also had 44 total made, and exceeded in rarity only

by the "thin bridge" version of the Hayden W. Wheeler which had only a handful of examples made).

This example has an interesting history in the Hamilton factory ledger, shown as having been finished

on February 24th, 1908 but as having not been sold until a decade later with a sale to Dennison Watch

91 Case Co. of Birmingham, England on June 10th, 1918. Presumably the watch would have therefore $4,000 -
originally been with an English made Dennison case and was likely later transferred to the present $8,000

case at some point during its lifetime. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of

Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some marring tight

around rim of aperture for stem detent screw, some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches

elsewhere, some mild bits of oxide to winding wheels and regulator assembly; excellent-plus dial with

fine scratch at 11:30, some perimeter scrape in areas under bezel; excellent hands; case shows very

little wear, ding to upper left perimeter of front, some small dings to rear that are more evident to

inner surface of lid, group of dings to band at 12:30, small nicks scattered elsewhere to band,

excellent engine turning detail, cuvette with a bit of play at its hinge and moves loosely through its

opening range; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

Illinois, Bunn Special, Grade 163, extremely rare Type II marking, 23J 60 Hour, 16S, two-tone white

and green gold-filled OF original Bunn Special Model 28 case, "Illinois Bunn Special 23 Jewel 60

Hour" marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor,

rayed pattern nickel damascene, s#5448151. A superb example of this extremely rare watch, the total

production of the Grade 163 Type II is believed to be only approximately 50 made which makes it by

92 far the rarest piece among the Bunn Special 23 jewel 60 Hour series. Mvt: Running, nearly mint $4,000 -
cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine scratches at perimeter of balance cock; virtually flawless $8,000

dial with only two minor as-made finish imperfections, the first a small bubble at the 33-minute hash,

the other a minuscule divot to the inner rim of the outer chapter at 11:30; excellent hands; case

shows hardly any wear, some small nicks to band, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail, serial

numbers of all case components correctly match; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass

crystal.

Waltham, American Watch Co, 19J, Model 1862, 20S, heavy 18K gold OF original A.W.Co. case,

gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial with script "American Watch Co." signature, KWKS, lever

escapement with capped escape wheel, gold train, gold center jewel setting, polished steel and gold

barrel arbor escutcheon, "Fogg's safety Pinion Patented" marked mvt, s#80134. Gross weight of

assembled watch 87.9 dwt (136.7 g); gross weight of 18K gold case only with mvt and crystal

removed 47.2 dwt (73.4 g). An excellent example of this rare top quality 20 size grade, the total

93 production of the American Watch Co. grade Model 1862 is believed to be 369 made. Mvt: $5,000 -

Running and was serviced September 2020, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt $8,000

tone, some mild micro-fine scratches, some scattered small light surface spots, disassembly during

servicing revealed barrel stopworks components all fully intact and functional; nearly flawless dial

with exceedingly faint perimeter hl near 8; excellent hands, minute with some finish loss and oxide;

case shows ample wear, no dents or dings, engine turning detail largely lost with only a smaller

portion (mostly around lower central area) remaining lightly evident; tight bow thinned a bit at top;

good thick glass crystal.

Waltham, American Watch Co, Model 1872, 21J, 16S, 18K gold original AWCo HC, gold cuvette

engraved "Henry S. Pray from Mother, June 10th, 1880," white glass enamel SS dial with distinctive

94 Old English AWCo signature characteristic to this grade, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, $4,600 -
decorative gold disk around balance jewel setting, quilted pattern nickel damascene, s#1448946. $6,600
Gross weight of assembled watch 83.5 dwt (129.9 g). An excellent example throughout of this top

quality grade. Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces,

short fine scratch at perimeter of main plate adjacent larger winding wheel, few typical small micro-

fine scratches elsewhere, larger winding wheel with two fine scratches at perimeter, larger winding
wheel with a small patch of oxide and both winding wheels with some scattered small specks of oxide;
flawless dial; nearly mint hands; case shows very light wear, ding to right perimeter of front, ding to
band at 8, subtle shallow dent at lower left perimeter of rear, engine turning detail reduced at
shoulders with portion of loss at right side of rear; tight bow, crown shows medium wear; good glass
crystal.

Adams & Perry, mvt signed "Lancaster Watch, Penna," 20J, 19S, very heavy 18K gold box hinge

drum style original BWCCo HC, bow with chain guards, gold cuvette with 1897 presentation, white

enamel SS canister style (snap on) dial, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, nickel damascene,

s#2089. Gross weight of assembled watch 105.6 dwt (164.2 g); gross weight of case only with

movement and with crown/stem assembly removed 57.9 dwt (90.1 g). An impressive example of this

rare high grade early watch. Based on observed examples it appears the total production of the Adams

& Perry model movement was likely under 1000 made, and of this total the much greater majority

were gilt finish movements and it appears likely only somewhat over 100 were made with nickel

damascene finish. This example is notable also for the presence of its massive original box hinge gold

95 case, as the majority of extant examples are either recased or without case. From the collection of $4,400 -
Robert L. Ravel, M.D. Mvt: Running, some skippages with clicking noise when winding which $6,000

occur more often as mainspring approaches full tension, overhaul recommended for winding issue,

excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, steelwork with

some small bits of oxide; dial with few scattered hls, small flake to upper right rim of center hole;

excellent hands; case shows light wear, many scattered scratches, fine scratches and scuffs to front

and rear, front with one mild shallow dent causing light rippling of reflection a bit above/right of

center, rear with some perimeter denting at lower left causing rear to close with a bit of gap to band

at upper left, center rear with some mild shallow dents causing rippling of reflection; tight bow,

crown in poor condition showing ample wear, evident past crudely executed soldered repairs and

with large splits to its jacket; good glass crystal.

gold cuvette, spectacular white and yellow DS dial with multicolor scenic imagery, central portion

with Egyptian theme of a woman overlooking the Nile river with pyramids and Great Sphinx in

background, curtain behind woman with stylized Elgin Natl Watch Co signature, seconds-register

and with a figure on camel at other hour positions all set against a light yellow background, dial with

beautiful gold foil highlights interspersed among scene, to symbol at 12, and to symbol in seconds-

register which also has silver foil for the blade of the scimitar, SW-SS, nickel damascene,

s#17823293. Gross weight of assembled watch 69.8 dwt (108.6 g). An extraordinary and exceedingly

beautiful dial, this style is illustrated and identified in Elgin Watch Co. factory literature as "Nobles of

96 the Mystic Shrine." This dial style is illustrated as available in seven versions as seen in our last $2,600 -

photo; each of these versions is extremely rare but this dial style is at its most striking in the form of $4,000

this present example as double-sunk having full color imagery and with camel and rider figure at the

hour numerals. Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, small patch of oxide

to perimeter of larger winding wheel, plates with some typical scattered very small fine scratches;

shows medium wear; good glass crystal.

Ferd Pairan, maker, serial #1, silver fusee pocket chronometer with pivoted detent escapement, mvt

marked "Manufactured at N.G. Baker's, West Aurora, Ill." and marked with 1864 date, dial marked

"N.G. Baker, West Aurora, Ill.," 59mm, heavy silver original HED HC with eagle hallmark, white

97 enamel SS canister style (friction fit) dial, KWKS, fully capped pivoted detent escapement with gold $2,000 -

escape wheel, likely 19J, gilt mvt, s#1 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of $4,000

assembled watch 132.0 dwt (205.5 g). A very intriguing American pocket chronometer of Civil War

era vintage, with serial #1 marked to both its case and its movement. Ferdinand Pairan, born in

Prussia in 1837, was a chronometer and watch maker that was active in the Chicago, Illinois area

during the 1860s and in later life relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. A tantalizing newspaper entry from
pre-statehood Montana, possibly referencing the present watch, is found in the January 6th, 1866
issue of "The Montana Post" and reads "Chronometer - We have inspected a beautifully finished
specimen of the watch-maker's art, belonging to L.C. Lee. It is a silver chronometer, made by Fred
(sic) Pairan, Aurora, Illinois. The movement cost $375. It is the only one of the kind in the Territory
and is a perfect time-keeper. Lee is manufacturing some fine specimens of gold chain." Please see our
final two photos for an image of this entry from "The Montana Post" as well as an image of an entry
from the June 12th, 1869 edition of the Chicago Tribune noting Pairan's business relocation within
Chicago. Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with scattered micro-fine
scratches, detent with some shellac excess visible at seat of locking pallet; nearly flawless dial with
few negligible very small fine to micro-fine scratches, few infinitesimal pinpoint nicks to lower rim of
center hole; excellent hands, hour with some oxide to inner portion of its spade; case shows medium
wear, an overall patina with some scattered splotchy darker areas, some scratches to upper perimeter
of front and scattered fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, few nicks to band, no dents or dings,
cuvette with small bit of play at its hinge; tight bow, push shows medium wear; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, Grade 946 with extremely rare damascene variant, 23J, 18S, very heavy 14K gold OF

recase with beautiful train scene engraved to rear, white enamel DS dial, time-zone hour hands, SW-

LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, rayed pattern nickel damascene, s#550761.

Gross weight of assembled watch 95.8 dwt (149.1 g). This rayed damascene pattern is extremely rare

among Grade 946 production. This example is the first from a group of 10 consecutive movements

(serial numbers 550761 to 550770) that are listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold

98 to Burr W. Freer of San Francisco, California between August and December of 1910. We have $4,000 -

encountered two other examples of this damascene among Grade 946 movements and both have been $6,000

within this block of 10 serial numbers, and we suspect this single group of 10 made may very well be

the total production of this variant. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of

Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, few mild micro-

fine scratches; flawless dial; excellent hands; case shows hardly any wear, no dents, few small nicks

above train on rear, superb engraving detail with no reduction; tight bow, crown shows little wear;

good glass crystal.

Hamilton, Serial #16, Grade 936, 17J, 18S, gold-filled OF original case with boxed band, threaded

bezel and rear, white enamel DS dial with "H" marking below factory signature, SW-LS, nickel

damascene, s#16. This serial number is listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold on

January 13th, 1894 to Frank Hammond of Buffalo, New York. Frank Hammond was a railroad watch

inspector for the New York Central Railroad as well as a few other railroads that passed through

100 Buffalo, and the capital "H" marking on the dial below the Hamilton factory signature is characteristic $2,000 -
to Hamilton watches that were purchased by Hammond. Overall a terrific very low serial numbered $4,000
example. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.

Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, few small fine and micro-fine scratches;

dial with edge chip or flake at 1:30; fine hands; case shows very little wear, mild ding to rear which

is evident to inner surface of lid but with minimal visibility to exterior, excellent engraving detail,

minor wear to brass to high points of boxed areas of band and to high points of pendant; tight bow,

crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

101 E. Howard & Co, Boston, Series VII, split-plate model, 17J, N-S (just over 19S), very heavy 14K $3,600 -
gold original Keystone HC with five-knuckle hinges, initials to front, gold cuvette, glazed observation $4,800

cover over mvt, white enamel DS dial, umbrella style hands, SW-SS, radiating fishscale pattern nickel
damascene, s#228893. Gross weight of assembled watch 102.0 dwt (158.7 g); gross weight of case
only with movement and with crown/stem assembly removed 59.9 dwt (93.2 g). A very impressive
original example in a notably heavy 14K gold hunting case. Mvt: Running, virtually mint cosmetic
mvt condition overall, very few negligible small micro-fine scratches; virtually flawless dial with only
some mild edge rub under bezel in a few areas; nearly mint hands; case shows hardly any wear,
small soft ding to rear a bit below-right of center, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows
very little wear; good glass crystals.

Illinois, Bunn Special, 23J, very rare HC variant, 16S, 14K gold original HC with beautiful engine

turning and engraving detail including a bird with outstretched wings to front and rear, front shield

with initials, white enamel DS Gothic numeral dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled

barrel, rayed pattern nickel damascene, s#2577639. Gross weight of assembled watch 57.5 dwt (89.4

g). An exceptional example of this very rare hunting case Bunn Special variant, the total production

of this 23 jewel Model 8 Bunn Special with rayed damascene and gold colored lettering is believed to

be only 50 made with all production within a single run spanning serial numbers 2577601 to 2577650

102 per Michael Chamelin's book. Mvt: Running, virtually mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright $3,000 -
lustrous surfaces, very few minimal small micro-fine scratches; virtually flawless dial with few $5,000
negligible small micro-fine scratches, minuscule pinpoint as-made dark spots inside the 34 minute

marker and outside the 52 minute marker, reverse of dial has been inspected and does have correct

unaltered dial feet for this Model 8 movement; excellent hands, minute with some oxide and finish

loss at tip; case shows hardly any wear, two minuscule nicks to upper left perimeter of rear, two small

nicks at center of cuvette, thin gauge cuvette is slightly out of shape with an out of level appearance

evident when opened, superb engine turning and engraving detail, front closes securely though its

inner lip shows some wear evident at the latch area; tight bow, crown shows light wear with thin lines

of ridge break; good glass crystal.

Illinois, Sangamo Special, unmarked 60 Hour, 23J, 17S, rare 14K green gold OF original Sangamo

Special rigid bow case with threaded front and rear, 17 size Montgomery metal dial with 13 to 24

hour indications in red, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, broad transverse

band pattern nickel damascene, s#4642187. Gross weight of assembled watch 64.8 dwt (100.8 g). The

14K solid gold Sangamo Special Model cases are rare and were made in several variations of color

and style. The 24 hour dial of this example is also notable, and we have observed a handful of other

103 similar examples that came from sources in Mexico or South America that had this particular dial in $3,000 -
combination with 14K gold rigid bow cases leading us to believe this style was produced in small $4,400
number for wealthy customers in the Mexican or South American market. Mvt: Running, excellent-

plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, tiny abrasion to center bridge near

crown wheel, some micro-fine scratches to hub of larger winding wheel, few typical small micro-fine

scratches elsewhere, some marring of balance jewel setting; excellent dial with some darkening of

perimeter areas, few small dark spots to central portion; excellent hands; case shows little wear, mild

dent to band at 7:30, good engraving detail; rigid bow with good engraving detail, crown shows light

wear; clean plastic crystal.

Seth Thomas, Grade 508, 16-17J, Model 2, 18S, massive 18K gold Dueber HC recase with unusual

lion and lioness scene to front, snake and bird scene to rear, both front and rear scenes with beautiful

tropical floral detail, gold cuvette, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, mvt marked "Adjusted to

Temperature & Position," nickel damascene, s#87929. Gross weight of assembled watch 104.3 dwt

(162.2 g); gross weight of case only with movement, crown/stem and crystal removed 59.0 dwt (91.8

g). An exceptional case, both for its substantial weight and also for its beautiful and very unusual

104 engraving detail. Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, toning of plate surfaces, mild $3,800 -
oxide to steelwork, fine scratch adjacent balance jewel setting; dial with chipping and flakes around $5,000

center, hl above seconds-register, outer chapter hl at 3, beveling wear of perimeter under bezel; fair

hands, hour and minute with finish loss, minute with some discoloration near center from heating;

case shows little wear, no dents, few ripples evident to internal surface of front and rear at perimeter

but with virtually no visibility externally, good engraving detail; case with past repair of front hinge

having some external visibility and greater internal visibility; tight bow thinned a bit at top, crown

105 Waltham, Samuel Curtis, serial #536, 15J, 17S, coin silver OF original case with eagle hallmark and $3,000 -
anchor hallmark, white enamel dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#536 with very nearly matched case s#535. An $5,000

excellent original example of this historically important early watch by Waltham's predecessor the
Boston Watch Company, the total production of the Samuel Curtis was somewhere between 800 and
900 made. The combination of eagle and anchor hallmarks is characteristic to early Boston Watch Co.
factory cases made in-house by casemaker Cabel Westcott as discussed in Wesley R. Hauptman's
excellent "The Boston Watch Company" article in the October 1963 edition of the NAWCC Bulletin.

Mvt: Running after a small twist to start, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone,
some light fingerprint etching at portions of main plate perimeter, few micro-fine scratches and mild
small haze spots; dial with hl from center to bottom, light hl from edge at 12 extending down to left of
center group of small perimeter hls between 1:30 and 3, small edge chipping under bezel between 8
and 9; excellent hands, hour and minute with some mild vertical bends; case shows light wear, an
attractive patina, few nicks to rear perimeter with one being an impression caused by bow, cuvette
with denting, cuvette with some play at its hinge and opening/closing loosely; bow pivots freely and is
thinned at top; glass crystal with small internal edge chip at 8.

Waltham, Dennison Howard & Davis, 15J, 18S, coin silver OF original case with eagle hallmark and

anchor hallmark, this combination of hallmarks is characteristic to early Boston Watch Co. factory

cases made in-house by casemaker Cabel Westcott, cuvette engraved "Made for W.N. Manning,

Rockport, Mass.," white enamel dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#1657. A historically important watch by

Waltham's predecessor, the Boston Watch Company; this excellent early example is notable for its

original condition and its interesting case inscription. William N. Manning was a lifelong resident of

Rockport, Massachusetts, and his watchmaking career began at the age of 14 and continued until an

age of the mid-to-upper 90s as described in an article included with this lot. Manning was also known

to have done contract work for the Waltham factory as he is listed in a December 1857 Appleton

Tracy & Co. factory ledger entry (a copy of which is included with this lot), and this entry shows his

106 receipt of a 16 jewel hunting case watch with compensation balance (based on date and description, $2,000 -
this would be very likely an "Appleton Tracy & Co." grade movement in 5000s serial range). A $4,000
further interesting aspect of the present watch's cuvette engraving is that it is notably similar in style

and execution to the "Made for" engraving dedicated to another individual that is found in the Cabel

Westcott case of Samuel Curtis serial #944 which our gallery sold in June, 2019. The marked

similarity of these engravings is suggestive that these presentation engravings were handled in-house

by the Boston Watch Co., and if so, this invites the question as to whether there may have been a

notable reason for which the Boston Watch Co. produced these "Made for" cases. Mvt: Running,

excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some mild small spots to plate surfaces,

hairspring stud with fine scratch striations from sanding; dial with small perimeter hls around 8, faint

hl at 1:30; excellent hands, hour with some oxide and finish loss; case shows medium to ample wear,

an attractive patina, some scattered mild dings and nicks, engine turning detail largely lost; tight

bow; glass bull's-eye crystal with some scattered mild small scratches.

Waltham, Improved Sporting Watch (Chronodrometer), Appleton Tracy & Co mvt with stop/start

function displayed on dial with sweep-seconds outer chapter of 4-minute interval, upper register for

12-hour timekeeping, and lower register for 4-second timing via 1/4-second jump, Model 1857, 15J,

18S, silver OF original A.T. & Co. (Appleton Tracy & Co.) case with American Indian engraving to

rear, stop/start function controlled by button at lower right of case band, slide at bottom of band to

allow or prevent stop/start function, "Improved Sporting Watch. Jas Appleton Jr. Waltham. Mass."

signed white enamel dial, KWKS from rear, diamond endstone, gilt mvt, s#13796. An excellent

original example of Waltham's first "complicated" watch; this is also one of the most distinctive and

visually striking examples of this watch type we've seen due to its unusual American Indian bust

107 engraving in large size to its case rear. This example also notably features a slide to the lower portion $3,000 -
of its case band which allows the user to prevent its stop/start function; although this slide feature is $6,000

very useful to this watch type (which has the impractical characteristic that the watch stops running

when the stop/start button is pressed, necessitating resetting of its timekeeping after use of the timer

function), a case slide was for some reason not typically incorporated among their production. These

watches were recorded as "Sporting Watch" in Waltham factory records and in total 400 were

produced with this production being at serial number ranges 13701 to 13900, 14501 to 14600, and

14701 to 14800. Dials of the earlier production examples were marked "Improved Sporting Watch" as

on the present watch, while dials of later production examples were signed instead with the

"Chronodrometer" name; and of these two signatures types the "Improved Sporting Watch" is scarcer.

The present example is from the initial production run of 100 which was made in October of 1858,

while the remainder of Sporting Watch production is listed with finish dates between 1859 and 1865.
This small total production spread over a period of seven years indicates that these watches found
limited commercial success, presumably in large part as from 1861 to 1865 the United States was
busy fighting a Civil War which no doubt limited its citizens' opportunities and enthusiasm for horse
or dog racing! Mvt: Running and was serviced September, 2020, good stop/start function, right side
of barrel bridge with previous owner's "J.W. Ford, Cohoes NY" very lightly scribed into surface,
otherwise nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall with excellent gilt tone, few micro-fine
scratches, some small bits of oxide to setting arbor and hairspring stud; excellent dial with some
scattered extremely faint hls; excellent hands, sweep-seconds-hand is blue, other hands are plum
colored; case shows light wear, an attractive moderate exterior patina, mild small ding and few small
nicks at upper left perimeter of rear, mild small ding at right side of band, few small nicks elsewhere
to band and to bezel, cuvette with previous owner's "J.W. Ford, Cohoes NY" lightly scribed into
surface left of setting aperture, some fine to micro-fine scratches around winding and setting
apertures; tight bow; good glass crystal.

Waltham, Cronometro Victoria, 15J, Model 1899, 16S, 18K multicolor gold original Fogel case with

equestrian rear having a rose gold horseshoe with seven inset diamonds surrounding a yellow gold

horse bust with ruby inset eye, front with rose gold horseshoe surrounding multicolor floral detail and

rose gold central shield with initials, gold cuvette, fancy white enamel SS impressed dial with gold

foil decorations, SW-SS, gilt mvt screws and regulator arm, nickel damascene, s#11133200. Gross

weight of assembled watch 68.2 dwt (106.1 g). An exquisitely beautiful watch, 18K multicolor gold is

quite rare among American case production, and this spectacular piece was handled previously by our

108 gallery in 2012. The Fogel case marking is for R.R. Fogel & Co. of New York who exported $3,400 -
Waltham watches with movement signatures of "Cronometro Supremo," "Cronometro Victoria," and $4,800
"Sol" to the South American market. Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall,

few small micro-fine scratches, few small specks of oxide to larger winding wheel; flawless dial;

excellent hands; case shows no wear, no dents or dings, cuvette with six intentional divots to allow

space for outer lid's diamond culets, exquisite crisp engraving detail, case front closing with some

thin bits of gap to band at a few positions, inner lip of case front with small bit of wear at latch area

and latch is rubbing somewhat upon release of case front, rear hinge missing one end-cap and with

very small bit of metal loss adjacent to end-cap position; tight bow, crown shows virtually no wear;

good glass crystal.

European Pocket Watches Part 1 of 3 EST

Ulysse Nardin, Locle, minute repeater with four-year perpetual calendar, moonphase and split-

seconds chronograph, 55mm, heavy 18K gold original Nardin case with initials to rear, Jurgensen-

style lips, gold cuvette, white enamel quintuple-sunk dial with aperture for moonphase, SW-SS, fully

capped lever escapement with counterpoise, fully jeweled repeat train down to the hammers, likely

31J or greater, wheel satin nickel finish, s#7608 within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 97.7

dwt (152.0 g). A very rare top grade complication from this esteemed maker. Mvt: Running, good

109 repeat function and tone, good chronograph and split-seconds function apart from an occasional $20,000 -
sluggishness of reset or failure to reset completely to 12, calendar functions advancing correctly via $30,000
adjustment buttons inset to case band, overhaul recommended for occasional sluggishness of

chronograph reset or failure of complete chronograph reset, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall,

some toning of plate surfaces, some scattered specks of oxide to steelwork; excellent dial with faint hl

through four-year register, some scattered small fine scratches; excellent hands; case shows medium

wear, protruding ding to lower portion of cuvette, no exterior dents or dings, reduced engraving

detail, reduced engine turning with full loss at perimeter of rear; tight bow, crown shows light wear;

good glass crystal.

Patek Philippe, Genève, five-minute repeater with split-seconds chronograph and 60-minute register,

retailed by Jaques & Marcus of New York, 53mm, heavy 18K rose gold original HC with beautiful

dark blue enamel monogram inlays of initials to front and 1888 date to rear, gold cuvette bearing

110 Patek and retailer markings as well as engraving "John from Georgie Feb. 3' 88.," white enamel DS $20,000 -
dial with retailer marking, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, likely 30(+)J, mvt with Patek and $28,000
retailer marking, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#80283 with matching serial number

within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 100.6 dwt (156.5 g). A very impressive and unusual

watch with split-seconds chronograph in combination with a five-minute repeating function rather

than the more typically seen minute repeating function, and the presence of a 60-minute register

rather than the more typically seen 30-minute register. The enameled date marking of this example's
case is particularly attractive with its three large and visually balanced "8" numerals, and we believe
this will hold special interest among some of our Chinese clientele due to the affinity of the Chinese
culture for the numeral 8 with its connotations of good fortune, prosperity and success. Watch is
accompanied by a hangtag from its recent service in Patek Philippe's facility, a folder with some
information from Patek Philippe regarding use of the chronograph feature, as well as a photocopy of
its extract from Patek Philippe archives, which reveals a sales date some months later than the case
inscription which is presumably indicative of the case engraving commemorating a special date to the
recipient rather than the date of the watch's presentation. This watch also comes with a two-year
warranty from 11/11/2019 that transfers with the watch by serial number. Mvt: Running although
upon its return from servicing by Patek Philippe the consignor was advised by Patek Philippe to make
sure watch is fully wound before engaging chronograph functions and also that due to the age of the
piece that it should not be carried and run daily, good repeater function and tone, good chronograph
and split-seconds function, good register function, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall,
some micro-fine scratches and mild fine scratches to main plate and balance cock, few small spots to
plate surface, some micro-fine scratching at perimeter portion of small central sweep bridge, superb
chronograph components and steelwork; flawless dial; mint hands; case shows very little wear, subtle
shallow dent at right side of front lid, few slight slivers of visibility to planchet seams of front and
rear lids, blue enamel is fully present and has some typical surface scratches; tight bow, crown shows
hardly any wear; good glass crystal.

A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte, chronograph with 30-minute register, 55mm, 18K gold original Lange

marked HC with Jurgensen-style lips, gold cuvette, white enamel triple-sunk dial, fancy gold Louis

XV style hands, SW-LS with setting mechanism released by depressing button on pendant, lever

escapement with gold pallet and escape wheel, at least 18J, gilt mvt, s#63293 with matching serial

number within case. Comes with its original fitted leather box with certificate bearing correctly

matched serial number and with compartments containing an extra mainspring and an extra crystal

wrapped in paper. Comes also with a 17-inch 14K gold chain. Gross weight of assembled watch 76.1

dwt (118.5 g). Gross weight of 14K gold chain 12.9 dwt (20.1 g). In all a superb boxed example in

111 top condition throughout, this piece has been in our consignor's collection since the 1970s and we are $12,000 -
pleased to offer it here in its first marketplace appearance in over 40 years. Mvt: Running, good $18,000

micro-fine scratches and mild abrasions to lids, two minuscule pinpoint nicks to band near 1:30, case

front and rear open somewhat less than 90 degrees as seen in photo; tight bow, crown shows hardly

any wear; good glass crystal; box is excellent with just some light wear and few small bits of loss to

exterior finish.

Albert H. Potter, Geneva, lever chronometer, 52mm, 18K gold original Albert H. Potter signed HC

with trademark balance wheel logo inside rear, Jurgensen-style lips, glazed observation cover over

mvt, bow with chain guards, white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement with

counterpoise, 20J, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#31. Gross weight of assembled watch

83.2 dwt (129.4 g). An exquisite example of this top quality maker's work, Albert H. Potter was born

in New York in 1836 though the majority of his watchmaking activity took place after his emigration

112 to Switzerland in about 1875. Mvt: Running, good setting function with unusual as-made design $10,000 -
that requires crown to be lifted up two positions for setting operation (rather than lifted a single $16,000

position as most watches are with stem-setting function), excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition

overall, bright lustrous surfaces with few typical mild micro-fine scratches; dial with two very faint

hls from center to upper portion, minuscule nick and hl above seconds-register, scratch at perimeter

above 3; nearly mint hands of differing colors, hour and minute are plum colored, seconds-hand is

blue; case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb crisp engine turning detail; tight bow,

crown shows little wear; good glass crystals.

Cartier, rare oval watch with sundial and compass, by European Watch and Clock Co, 32mm x

113 49mm, original 18K yellow gold OF case with screwed construction and an articulating post for use $8,000 -
of the sundial, loop on band at 6 as seen in image 9 has been added at a later date, original silvered $16,000

dial with black painted Roman numerals, SW-SS, lever escapement, 18J, fausses-côtes pattern nickel

damascene, mvt s#486359, case s#39931. Gross weight of assembled watch 24.9 dwt (39.1 g). A rare
and truly exquisite piece of Cartier workmanship from a bygone era when Cartier's biggest clients
were Royals and when decadence was on a different scale. Very few sundial compass watches were
produced by Cartier; a notable example that belonged to the late Duke of Windsor was sold in 2010
by Sotheby's for £63,650. Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, no oxide, few
very light fine scratches to plates; dial with small scrape above the signature, some overall darkening
with mottled spotting throughout; excellent hands; case shows little wear, several light dings to sides
and to the articulating post, engraved detail is sharp and clearly legible, brushed factory finish is still
largely present, hallmarks are crisp and visible; fixed bow was added at a later date via gold
soldering, crown shows very little wear; good glass crystals.

mild reduction at shoulder, small bit of play at mvt hinge, marring and small amount of metal loss to

157 Lighthouse. Comes also with a Certificate of Origin from Chelsea Clock, a winding key, and a recent $800 -

this example are likely indicative of a depot level rebuild in a military or government facility and are

not unusual among this type of clock. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall; dial

with fine scratch below winding aperture, some scattered mild spots and mild lesser fine scratches;

fine hands, minute with a patch of rust near center; case shows medium wear, profuse oxide and

Chelsea 8-day, World War 1 era aluminum aircraft clock for the Aviation Section, Signal Corps, a

predecessor to the modern day US Air Force, 107mm round, 46mm thick, original aluminum case

with three mounting holes, screw down bezel and winding/setting crown at 6, back stamped "C.C.Co

117, February 1918," original black dial has turned an attractive "tropical" brown color with a 3-6-9

layout with subsidiary seconds at 12, matching s#116080 on both movement and case. The Aviation

Section of the Signal Corps was founded in 1914 and was the second iteration of the United States

version of an Air Force. They first saw action against Pancho Villa during the Mexican Expedition

158 when Villa attacked Columbus, New Mexico. The entire squadron consisted of 8 Curtis JN-4 $600 -

"Jenny's" at the time and only 11 pilots. With the entire Aviation section only consisting of 44 active $1,200

duty officers, this was soon to change with the breakout of World War 1 with the inevitable expansion

that ended 33 years later in the formation of the United States Air Force. Truly a must have piece for

the early military collector or the Chelsea collector who just doesn't have "everything." From the

Hamilton's total production of this 36 size movement was 970 made with all examples being

produced in a single production run spanning serial numbers 1260001 to 1260970. From known

examples it appears that the first 500 movements of this run were typically paired with massive

sterling silver Crescent Watch Case Co. cases as seen with the present example, while the final 470

163 movements of the run were typically arranged in boxed chronometer style being in gimbaled chrome $1,400 -

Hamilton, Grade 974 with rare DeLong escapement, unusual 24 hour dial designed for one hour hand

revolution per day, 17J, 16S, nickel OF swingout recase with "U.S. Shipping Board" marking to rear,

metal dial, time-zone hour hands set 3 hours apart, SW-SS, DeLong escapement with D-shaped

upright pallets extending downward below the plane of the lever, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar

hairspring, nickel damascene, s#1248499. An intriguing piece, although the movement serial number

ostensibly dates to about 1917 the mono-metallic balance wheel of the watch dates to the 1940s or

somewhat thereafter and we suspect that the movement's other unusual features (24 hour dial and its

associated gearing, and the DeLong escapement) also may have been executed at this time. Charles E.

DeLong's escapement designs were granted U.S. patent numbers 1192812 and 1327226 on July 25,

1916 and January 6, 1920 respectively. The DeLong escapement was added to a small number of

Hamilton, Illinois, and Ball Hamilton movements and these watches initially performed admirably

165 with functional advantages of an increased escapement draw angle and a reduced recoil, but the $600 -
DeLong escapement never gained widespread use as its benefits were offset by a potential for $1,200

performance impairment following servicing due to this escapement's greater sensitivity to slight

changes in the depthing of the escapement hole jewels. From the well-known Hamilton collection of

Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Ticking sluggishly, setting mechanism not engaging

while mvt is in case, when mvt is uncased and a stem is inserted the setting mechanism engages but

minuscule specks of oxide to larger winding wheel and regulator spring; nearly flawless dial with

small hl below seconds-register; hour and minute hands likely originally held luminous material
which is now missing, hands otherwise excellent; case components with mismatched serial numbers
to one another, case shows little wear, ding to band at 8, few minuscule nicks to band at 11; tight
bow, crown is a chrome-plated base metal replacement showing light wear and tilts a bit as turned;
clean plastic crystal. Box in excellent cosmetic condition.

Hamilton, Grade 3992B, 22J, World War II era Navigation Master Watch made for British military

use, 16S, chrome-plated base metal OF case with Ministry of Defence (English spelling) pheon

(broad arrow) to rear as well as Hydrographic Services (HS3) contract markings which have been

lightly overscored, previous light numerical marking evident at center covered by current marking,

white enamel dial with pheon and Hamilton marking, SW-hack-set with sweep-seconds, fully capped

lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, mvt marked "U.S. Navy Bu. Ships"

as well as with British pheon, striped pattern nickel damascene, mvt s#3C166. Watch comes with a

fitted wooden box with internal Ministry of Defence signature plaque and 1971 dated Hydrographic

Department card. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst,

California. Mvt: Running, good hacking function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some

168 scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; virtually flawless dial with a minuscule as-made finish $800 -

imperfection of a pinpoint pit in the glaze adjacent the 32 minute hash mark; nearly mint hands; case $1,400

rear with s#570288 and case band with s#0570289 which we believe may be more likely an error of

original assembly as the discrepancy is of only one number from the final digit and as the case rear

markings align close to vertically, handscratched Roman numeral number inside bezel appears to be

349 which is likely indicative of its change during the lifetime of the watch, case shows very little

wear to its rear but has near complete chrome loss to band likely caused by polishing, areas of

chrome loss to bezel, no dents or dings, excellent contract marking detail to rear and circular finish

of rear remains present; bow pivots freely and has some chrome loss, crown shows very little wear

and crown tilts somewhat to side as it is turned; clean plastic crystal. Box in excellent condition

overall; interior plaque with 3C166 serial number marking appears likely to have been created in

more modern times.

Co, rear with initials, gold cuvette engraved "T.H. Saunders from Ida, Aug 12, 1906," white enamel

SS dial, SW-LS, bull's-eye pattern nickel damascene, s#B202354. Gross weight of assembled watch

64.7 dwt (100.6 g). Comes with an associated fitted "The Webb C. Ball Co, Cleveland" marked box

with leather exterior. An elegant Ball presentation watch with rare 14K gold Ball case, the "W.C.B.

183 Co." marking within the case of this example is quite unusual and is something that we had not $1,500 -

encountered before among the Ball marked gold cases we have previously handled. Mvt: Running, $1,800

excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, few micro-fine scratches, small surface spot at

perimeter of balance cock, winding wheels with some small specks of oxide; dial with numerous

scattered hls; excellent hands; case shows little wear, small nick to band at 5:30, no dents or dings,

good engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows light wear with small ridge break; glass crystal with

glue excess around its seat. Box shows light exterior wear and some scratches, some minor finish loss

which is mostly at edges; interior is excellent with some typical light wear and soiling.

Columbus, "Judson & Robie, Rochester NY" marked mvt and dial, 16J, 18S, heavy 14K gold HC

with scalloped band, very attractive engraving detail including a majestic buck scene to rear, front

shield with stacked initials, gold cuvette with elegant 1891 presentation engraving, white enamel DS

dial, SW-LS, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#102463. Gross weight of assembled watch 89.8

dwt (139.7 g). Judson & Robie were jewelers located at 256 East Main Street, and this firm operated

in Rochester under this name between 1887 and 1892. Mvt: Running after a sluggish start,

excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent two-tone color, some scattered small surface

184 spots and mild micro-fine scratches, few small specks of oxide to regulator assembly; dial with two $2,000 -
light blue hls below seconds-register, very small light blue hl under bezel at setting lever area; nearly $2,600

mint hour and seconds-hand, fine minute hand with oxide to its tip and to its central hub; case with

somewhat weak front lift spring needing a touch of assistance to progress through the initial part of

its opening range, case shows little wear, no dents or dings, good engraving detail with mild

reduction, one ambiguous mark to inner rim of case rear (outside mvt regulator index) is open to

interpretation as to whether it is evident of a past mvt having been within this case or if it is simply a

meaningless stray mark; tight bow thinned very slightly at top, crown shows light wear; good glass

crystal.

Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 91, three-finger bridge mvt, 16S, heavy 18K gold J&S (Jeannot

& Shiebler) HC recase with gold cuvette and glazed observational mvt cover, white glass enamel DS

canister-style (friction fit snap-on) dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel

settings, nickel damascene, s#942064. Gross weight of assembled watch 83.1 dwt (129.3 g). A rare

top grade movement, we believe that total production of the Grade 91 was approximately 350 made.

Although a single run of 1000 serial numbers spanning 942001 to 943000 was blocked for Grade 91

production it appears that nearly two-thirds of this serial range was never completed, as all examples

185 we have observed have fallen neatly within only the 942001 to 942350 portion of this run. Mvt: $3,400 -
Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, some scattered fine $4,000
to micro-fine scratches, few scattered minuscule dark spots; dial with very faint hls above seconds-

register, scratch within seconds-register below center, very small scratch to outer chapter at 2:30,

tiny edge flakes under bezel at 5:30; fine hands; case front opens slightly wide of 90 degrees (to

approximately 100 degrees), case shows light to medium wear, shallow crease type dent toward front

right perimeter, some mild dings to front and rear, dent to band at 7, few dings elsewhere to band,

reduced engine turning detail with some portions of full loss at shoulders, rear hinge missing an end-

cap; tight bow, crown shows ample wear; good glass crystal front crystal, clean plastic observational

mvt cover.

Elgin, B.W. Raymond, Grade 27, 17J, 18S, 14K gold HC recase with beautiful engraving detail,

186 scalloped band, gold cuvette with 1890 presentation, fancy white enamel SS dial with perimeter $1,800 -
having attractive geometric line detail in blue and salmon color, gold foil decorations, minute markers $2,600
in gold and silver foil, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#7019389. Gross weight of assembled watch 93.4

dwt (145.3 g). An excellent gold case with very impressive in hand presence. Mvt: Running,

excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine and micro-fine scratches to plates, mild oxide
to steelwork; virtually flawless dial with only some very light and sparing edge rub under bezel;
excellent hands; case front lift spring is not making contact with lid through final portion of opening
range which allows lid to tip about one-third of the way towards closed with gravity, case shows
hardly any wear, small subtle ding to unadorned shield at lower front perimeter, excellent engraving
detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.

Elgin, low serial #637, B.W. Raymond, 15J, 18S, 14K gold (tested) VLF HC recase with misleading

"18" marking, front with well worn initials which are no longer legible, gold cuvette, "National Watch

Co" white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#637. Gross weight of assembled watch 84.8 dwt (131.8

g). Elgin began their numbering sequence with serial #101, making this very early example the 537th

watch made by serial number. Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates have been

187 re-gilt with this restoration being well executed though showing some telltale signs, few micro-fine $2,000 -
scratches and mild pinpoint surface nicks; dial with hl at 7, minuscule edge nick at 5:30; excellent $2,600

hands; case shows ample wear, few dings and mild dents to front, bow impressions to upper front,

scattered mild to moderate dents to rear, engraving detail to front initials is substantially lost,

reduced engraving detail to front/rear perimeters and to band, rear hinge with small bit of play and

missing its end-caps, front hinge with past repair evident internally; tight bow, push shows ample

wear; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, 11J, "Constant, St. Louis, MO." marked mvt, "Mermod Jaccard & Co, St. Louis, MO."

marked dial, 18S, very heavy 18K gold Mermod Jaccard & Co St. Louis marked OF recase, rear

shield with initials, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, gilt mvt, s#23405. Gross weight of

assembled watch 87.2 dwt (135.5 g); gross weight of case only with movement, crystal, crown and

stem removed 41.6 dwt (64.8 g). An extremely rare watch, this gilt finish open face version is the

rarest of the 11 jewel Hamiltons with an estimated total production of only 30 made and these are in

fact the rarest of any regular production 18 size Hamilton grade. From the well-known Hamilton

collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt

188 condition overall, some overall haze to gilt tone, some scattered spots, some fine to micro-fine $3,600 -
scratches to barrel bridge, dial with some looseness to mvt and inspection of the movement uncased $5,000

shows the dial screw near 7:30 is missing and the dial screw near 12:30 turns freely in place without

reaching a tightened end point (dial was not removed to inspect its feet or reverse side); virtually

flawless dial with small scratch at lower right perimeter of seconds-register; excellent hands; case

shows very little wear, some dings and nicks to band, some mild dings to rear that are more evident to

inner surface of lid, excellent engine turning detail with only slight reduction at shoulder; tight bow,

crown shows very little wear but has some excess up/down play and stem tends to disengage when

crown is at the upper portion of its range of motion, sleeve of watch with rust and some metal loss

observed when movement was uncased and crown was unthreaded; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, 11J, "Constant, St. Louis, MO." marked mvt, "Mermod Jaccard & Co, St. Louis, MO."

marked dial, 18S, heavy 14K gold Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Co. marked HC made by Jeannot &

Shiebler, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, gilt mvt, s#25059. Gross weight of assembled

watch 85.6 dwt (133.2 g). A very rare watch, the total production of this gilt finish hunting case

version of the 11 jewel Hamilton is estimated to be only 100 made. From the well-known Hamilton

collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, sets properly in clockwise

189 direction but setting mechanism comes to an abrupt halt when turned counterclockwise, overhaul $3,000 -
needed for normalized setting function, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some overall haze to $4,400
gilt tone, some scattered surface spots with majority to barrel bridge; flawless dial; excellent hands,

minute with some oxide and finish loss; case shows very little wear, no exterior dents or dings,

cuvette with shallow crease-type dent around its midpoint, small ding to lower portion of cuvette,

excellent engine turning and engraving detail, inner lip of case rear with a curved mark not far from

pendant location that is somewhat ambiguous but we suspect may have been a witness mark from a

previous movement's case screw that has since been polished to reduce its appearance; tight bow,

crown shows light wear; clean plastic crystal with some mild marks of internal hand rub.

Hamilton, Grade 923, 23J, 10S, heavy 18k gold OF original Hamilton case made by S&W (Schwab &

190 Wuischpard), rear engraved "To Dr. Fordyce B. St. John -- Hon. Albert W. Hawkes From his Officer $1,300 -
Associates of Twenty-Five Years in Congoleum-Nairn Inc. 1926 - 1951" and is also engraved "From $1,700
Albert W. Hawkes May 15, 1957," gold cuvette engraved "One of God's True Ambassadors in

Surgery and Medical Science -- 'His Life is Gentle and the Elements so mixed in Him that Nature

might stand up and say to the World "This is a Man.'" -- With Gratitude Respect and Love Albert W.
Hawkes," silvered dial with applied gold numerals, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled
barrel arbor, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, bull's-eye pattern nickel damascene,
s#R2675. Watch comes with an attached 15-inch gold-plated chain. Gross weight of assembled watch
40.9 dwt (63.6 g); gross weight of 18K gold case only with movement, crystal and crown/stem
assembly removed 18.7 dwt (29.1 g). An excellent example of this top quality 10 size grade with
interesting presentation. Albert Wahl Hawkes assumed chairmanship of the Congoleum-Nairn, Inc.
corporation board in 1937, was president and director of the United States Chamber of Commerce
during 1941 and 1942, and served as a U.S. Senator for New Jersey from 1943 to 1949. Mvt:
Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, few micro-fine
scratches, few small spots of oxide to larger winding wheel; excellent dial with fine scratch left of
center; fine hands, minute with some mild bends at tip; case bezel snaps off very easily and tends to
inadvertently come off at times including frequently when rear of case is opened, case shows little
wear, dent to band at 4 which is fairly mild visually but is causing a bit of front/rear ripple to band
shape and is likely contributing to the issue of case bezel coming off very easily, good engraving
detail; bow pivots semi-freely, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, Grade 933, 16J, 18S, 14K gold HC recase with beautiful engraving detail including a bird

to front and rear, small seaside home scene to rear, gold cuvette, "W.H. Eaton" marked white enamel

DS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#1360. Gross weight of assembled watch 82.4 dwt (128.2 g). A

scarce watch with a total production of only 650 made, this early example is from the third run of

Grade 933 production. The originality of this example's private label signed dial is supported by the

Hamilton ledger, which shows this serial number as having been sold to W.H. Eaton of Pawtucket,

191 Rhode Island on April 7th, 1894. Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, soft white- $1,800 -

ish toning of plate surfaces as is notably common among Grade 932 and Grade 933 production, $2,400

plates with scattered fine and micro-fine scratches with most notable concentrations being to balance

cock foot and around case screws, some abrasion to inner perimeter of barrel bridge adjacent

regulator adjustment screw; dial with group of outer chapter hls between 12 and 1, single outer

chapter hls at 6 and at 7:30; excellent hands, minute with small bend near tip; case shows very little

wear, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail with mild reduction of fine detail at shoulders;

tight bow, crown shows light wear; glass crystal with some circular rub marks internally.

Hamilton, "Chesapeake & Ohio, Railway Special" marked mvt, Grade 936, 17J, 18S, 3oz coin silver

Dueber Railway OF original case, "W.L. Fredeking, Hinton, W. Va" marked white enamel DS dial,

time-zone hour hands, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#30962. A rare and desirable railroad marking

with its correct dial marked for Will Fredeking who was an official watch inspector for the

Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. An interesting aspect of this movement is its unusual serial number

arrangement with the first two digits at one side of the case screw and the final three digits at the

192 other; the reason for this unusual marking style is that this movement began its existence as serial $1,600 -
number 962 prior to being renumbered by Hamilton with 30,000 added to its serial number for its $2,400
November 27th, 1897 sale to distributor J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, Illinois and the renumbering of

this particular serial number is noted in the Hamilton ledger records. From the well-known Hamilton

collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt

condition overall, some typical scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; excellent dial with some

minuscule nicks to right side perimeter of center section, small fracture at edge largely under bezel at

8; excellent hands; case shows light wear, few shallow mild dents to rear causing ripples of

reflection; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, "Burlington Route Special, Galesburg, Ill." marked mvt, Grade 938, 17J, 18S, coin silver

OF original case with gold inlaid train scene to rear, "Wilbur, Lanphear Co." marked white enamel

DS dial, time-zone hour hands, SW-LS, two-tone gilt and nickel checkerboard and snowflake pattern

nickel damascene, s#13820. A rare high grade railroad marked watch with one of Hamilton's most

193 unusual and eye-catching two-tone damascene patterns. Wilbur, Lanphear Co. were Galesburg, $1,400 -
Illinois jewelers and the "Wilbur, Lanphear Co." marked dial is correct to this piece. From the well- $2,800

shows medium to ample wear, no dents, few small mild nicks, re-engraved rear detail in superb crisp
condition, "K. Bemis" is lightly scribed in small lettering below engraving detail; tight bow, crown
shows light wear; clean plastic crystal.

Hamilton, "Burlington Standard Made by Hamilton Watch Co." marked mvt, "Burlington Standard"

marked dial, Grade 943, 21J, 18S, gold-filled HC with spectacular engine turning and engraving

detail including a detailed locomotive image to rear, white enamel DS dial, time-zone hour hands,

SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, gold jewel settings, gilt mvt screws and regulator assembly,

ornate two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#43470. Watch comes with an attached leather strap with

"Hamilton Railroad Standard 266" marked brass fob. A very rare railroad marking with a spectacular

two-tone movement finish, this example is notable for the superb preservation of its movement's two-

tone color. This serial number is listed in the Hamilton ledger as having been sold on February 20th,

1900 to a purchaser in McCook, Nebraska, but the name of the purchaser is not readily legible in the

ledger. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt:

194 Running, winds a bit stiffly and has some audible creak while setting, overhaul recommended for $1,200 -
normalized winding/setting function, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, superb two-tone $2,400

color, patch of abrasion to inner perimeter of barrel bridge adjacent regulator adjustment screw,

some fine scratches at left perimeter of barrel bridge, some dark spots to plate surface in space

between third and fourth wheel jewel settings and case screw; dial with thin sliver of white fill

material evident at seating of seconds-register indicating re-securing of dial segments and suggesting

possibility that dial's outer chapter and/or seconds-register are replacements taken from another

Hamilton dial as "donor," dial otherwise cosmetically superb with some mild edge rub under bezel;

nearly mint hands; case shows virtually no wear, small nick to left center of front that is evident to

inner surface of lid but with little (if any) exterior visibility, no dents or dings, superb crisp engine

turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal. Fob and

Hamilton, 940 "Special" with rare gilt damascene finish, 21J, 18S, 14K gold OF recase with attractive

engraving detail including small house scene to rear, gold cuvette, "Hamilton Watch Co. Special"

marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, gilt damascene, s#676059.

Gross weight of assembled watch 90.7 dwt (141.0 g). The all gilt damascene pattern of this movement

is very rare and the small handful of examples of this watch we have seen have been in three distinct

small serial number ranges comprising 62 watches in total; serial numbers 513411 to 513422, serial

195 numbers 516601 to 516625 and serial numbers 676055 to 676079, all of which are listed in the $1,800 -
Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold to the Geo B. Barrett Co. of Pittsburgh, PA. This $2,600

particular example is listed as having been sold to Geo B. Barrett Co. on August 30th, 1910. From the

well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, nearly

mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, few small fine to micro-fine scratches; excellent dial with

Hamilton, "Time Ball Special For Railroad Service" marked mvt also with Time Ball marked image,

Grade 940 with scarce two-tone damascene, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF original case with attractive

locomotive image to rear, deeply engraved detail to bezel and rear perimeter, "G. Beninghausen,

Seattle, Wash." marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene,

s#473202. A very rare watch that features one of Hamilton's most eye-catching and stylish movement

signatures with its detailed Time Ball image. Gerhard Beninghausen established his jewelry business

196 in Seattle in 1885, served as a time inspector for the Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad, and operated $800 -
Seattle's only streetside time ball. Beninghausen's Time Ball was located in front of his business in $1,600
Seattle's Pioneer Square at 713-715 First Avenue and consisted of a post with a large metallic ball

which dropped at a specific time each day, and residents and passerby made use of Beninghausen's

Time Ball to set their watches to the correct time. Please see our photos of this lot for the image of an

advertisement Beninghausen ran in the February 4th, 1902 issue of the "Seattle Star" newspaper and

for the image of an advertisement ran in the January 1904 issue of "The Coast" magazine; with

Beninghausen prominently promoting the Time Ball in each of these advertisements. From the well-

known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, fine-plus

cosmetic mvt condition overall, reduced two-tone color, some scattered small fine to micro-fine
scratches and mild small surface spots, mvt lettering appears to have had its black color re-applied
and surfaces have some toning in areas around lettering; excellent dial with small edge chip under
bezel at setting lever, short curved fine scratch above center of seconds-register; excellent hands,
hour with some finish loss; case shows little wear, no dents or dings, good overall engine turning and
engraving detail though with notable reduction of engine turning detail at rear shoulder, small bits of
wear to brass to some of the high engraving detail of bezel and rear perimeter; tight bow, crown
shows light wear; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, "Trade Mark A.K. Jobe RR Standard" marked dial, "A.K. Jobe, Jackson, Tenn. Water

Valley, Miss." marked mvt, Grade 940, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF original case with very attractive

engine turning and engraving detail to rear, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, nickel damascene,

s#138109. A rare and very interesting railroad grade private label, the viewer is struck immediately

by the immense similarity of its dial design and signature to the style typical of Ball Watch Co.

"Official RR Standard" watches. This similarity of dial styles raises the interesting question of

whether this dial for A.K. Jobe was created with the knowledge and consent of Webb C. Ball, but we

are not aware of any documentation that sheds light on this question. Consistent with the small

number of other A.K. Jobe marked Hamilton Grade 940/941 watches we've encountered, this example

is listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold to distributor J.W. Forsinger of Chicago,

with this particular serial number showing a sales date of December 5th, 1900. From the well-known

197 Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, tip of setting lever $800 -

protrudes further than appropriate and is impeding the closing of case bezel, overhaul needed to $1,600

address setting lever protrusion, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some short scratches and

small pecks to balance cock foot and around case screw areas, some micro-fine scratches elsewhere,

regulator assembly with some mild oxide in areas; excellent dial with faint hl below seconds-register

near 5, some mild fine scratches and tiny surface nicks, mild circular hand rub in upper portion of

seconds-register, small patched edge flake under bezel near 5, a line of perimeter scrape in areas

under bezel; nearly mint hands; case bezel not threading closed due to excess protrusion of mvt

setting lever, case bezel is currently only started onto its threads to avoid potential damage or further

difficulties caused by tightening the bezel further, setting lever protrusion will need to be addressed

for this case to be functionally retained with this mvt, case shows hardly any wear, tiny nick to band

at 1, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly

any wear; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, "Trade Mark A.K. Jobe RR Standard" marked dial, "A.K. Jobe, Jackson, Tenn. Water

Valley, Miss." marked mvt, Grade 941, 21J, 18S, gold-filled original HC with beautiful engine

turning and engraving detail, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, nickel

damascene, s#127509. In our experience this hunting case Grade 941 version of this watch is

particularly rare; we have only encountered a small number of either the Grade 940 or Grade 941

version but the greater number of these were open face Grade 940. Like the preceding lot, this watch

shares the same distinctive dial of notably similar design and signature to the style typical of Ball

Watch Co. "Official RR Standard" watches. Consistent with the small number of other A.K. Jobe

marked Hamilton Grade 940/941 watches we've encountered, this example is listed in the Hamilton

198 factory ledger as having been sold to distributor J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, with this particular serial $1,000 -

number showing a sales date of August 1st, 1901. From the well-known Hamilton collection of $2,000

Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition

overall, small patch of abrasion at inner edge of barrel bridge adjacent regulator adjustment screw,

some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere; dial with patched edge chip near 5, faint hl

below seconds-register near 5, small patched edge chip under bezel at 2:30, flake tight along outer

edge at under bezel at 7, tiny edge flake under bezel near 4:30; fine hands, minute is somewhat short

and has some oxide, seconds-hand is a replacement; case front opens somewhat wide of 90 degrees

(to approximately 105 degrees) and front closes leaving a bit of gap to band, case shows hardly any

wear, no dents or dings, superb crisp engine turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows

hardly any wear; good glass crystal.

Hamilton, Grade 946 "Extra," 23J, 18S, 14K gold swingout OF case, "A.N. Anderson, Extra" marked

ornate nickel damascene, s#549933. Gross weight of assembled watch 82.0 dwt (127.5 g). A superb $2,800
