Model 5 recase, "Hamilton Adjusted For Special RR Service 21 Jewels" marked white enamel DS
dial, time-zone hour hands, fully capped lever escapement, ornate two-tone gilt and nickel
damascene, s#870603. An extremely rare marking; this is the only example of a Grade 992 marked
"Special" and "Engineer" that we have encountered. This watch was pictured in the "Railroader's
204 Corner" article by Ed Ueberall and Kent Singer in the August 2001 issue of the NAWCC Bulletin. $2,000 -
From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: $4,000
Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good two-tone color, spot at edge of train
bridge above "M" of Hamilton marking, some oxide to regulator assembly; excellent dial with very
faint outer chapter hls at 4, few mild fine scratches, small abrasion at edge under bezel at 1:30;
nearly mint hands; case shows little wear, few small nicks to band and rear, no dents; tight bow,

Hamilton, Grade 992B with rare gold case, 21J, 16S, heavy 14K gold OF original Hamilton Model 17
bar-over-crown case, "Hamilton Railway Special" marked Montgomery white enamel DS dial, SW-
LS, fully capped lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, striped pattern
nickel damascene, s#C288539. Watch comes with a scarce mottled raspberry colored hard plastic
flip-top Hamilton box. Gross weight of assembled watch 73.9 dwt (114.9 g). This Model 17 case in
14K gold version is rare as Hamilton's pricing of this style limited its sales to a small handful of
wealthy customers. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst,
California. Mvt: Running, virtually mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, nearly pristine surfaces
with very few minimal micro-fine scratches; dial with two very small nicks to upper rim of seconds-
205 register with one having associated very small surrounding hls, very small hl to inner rim of outer $1,600 -
chapter near 2; excellent hands, hour and minute are black, seconds-hand is blue; case shows little $2,400
wear, rear with some shallow ripples to its reflection over much of its surface possibly evidencing the
polished removal of engraved initials, no dents or dings, we believe case serial numbers correctly
match as case rear has s#P164739 and case band has two unambiguous handscratched Roman
numerals of VII and III for the digits of 7 and 3 and has a third handscratched Roman digit of an "I"
alongside an upside down "V" shape which we believe represents the 9, no serial number markings
evident inside case bezel; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; clean plastic crystal. Box exterior
shows light wear, small chips to front and rear of upper lid adjacent the hinge area, foil Hamilton
seal is present with some abrasions, blue inserts are present and seemingly glued or otherwise
secured within box, upper lid liner is present; watch slides quite tightly in and out of box likely due to
its relatively thick plastic crystal.

for the Citizens' State Bank between the years of 1892 and 1899 before becoming second vice-
209 president of the bank between 1899 and 1903. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition $2,000 -

Illinois, Bunn first run, serial #232, 15J, 18S, coin silver OF drum style Dueber recase with marking
for retailer Bingham of Indianapolis, Indiana, acorn shaped pendant, offset gold hinges, "Springfield
Watch Co." marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#232. An excellent very early example,
the first run of Bunn production spanned serial numbers 201 to 300 and was finished between March
and July of 1872 with this particular serial number having been finished in June. The case of this
example is particularly attractive with its distinctive acorn shaped pendant which is found
occasionally among cases made for retailer Wheelock Peet Bingham who operated in Indianapolis
214 under the "Bingham" name until 1878 (following which Bingham operated in partnership as $1,400 -
"Bingham, Walk & Mayhem" until early 1883, and for some years following this as "Bingham & $2,600
Walk"). Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good overall gilt tone with some
mild haze in areas, some fine to micro-fine scratches with the most notable being at left and right
perimeter of barrel bridge, semi-circular scratches and rub tight around case screw position,
steelwork with few small bits of oxide, mvt with small amount of play within case; dial with perimeter

edge chips at 4 and 6:30, few short scratches.
Illinois, Bunn Special, Grade 163, 23J 60 Hour Elinvar, Type IE marking, 16S, white gold-filled OF

60 Hour" marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor,
mono-metallic balance with blued Elinvar hairspring, rayed pattern nickel damascene, s#5420714. A
scarce watch, the total production of the 163 Elinvar Type IE is believed to be between 1080 to 1130
made per Mike Chamelin's Bunn Special book, and the attractive engraving design to this example's
215 case rear is identified as "Purse Pattern" in the Bunn Special book. From the collection of Charlie $1,400 -

few micro-fine scratches, larger winding wheel with very small speck of oxide at its perimeter; nearly

production of the Grade 500 was only 240 made. The Grade 500 and its open face equivalent the
Grade 505 were Rockford's finest quality 16 size products. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt
216 condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, short scratches outside fourth wheel bridge screw and $2,400 -
outside third wheel bridge screw, some typical micro-fine scratches elsewhere, steelwork with some $3,400

small central range of motion before becoming tight in either direction, crown shows very little wear;

Cataloger’s picks for watches valued below $1000:
American pocket watch expert, Fred Hansen, chose Lot 371 Illinois "The Miners' Watch"
“Rarely does one see a watch that evokes a vision of Western America as distinctive as "The Miners' Watch" offered by a
Virginia City, Nevada retailer. Prior to 1858, Nevada was a sparsely populated territory but this was to change with the
discovery of the Comstock Lode. The resulting silver rush to Virginia City peaked in the mid-1870s, which matches with
when this watch was produced.”
Wristwatch specialist, Tyler St. Gelais, chose Lot 273, Domino pilot's watch
“I chose this watch because it gives tremendous value for money, in a large stainless-steel case with a knurled rotatable
bezel and black dial with radium numerals. This watch exudes a hard utility type esthetic which has become well sought
after in today’s collecting market.”

Waltham, American Watch Co, Model 1862 first run assembled from Nashua Watch Co material, 19J,
20S, silver HC recase of European manufacture, white enamel SS dial, KWKS, fully capped lever
escapement, gilt mvt, s#50042 with Nashua s#163 located internally. A historically important watch
that represents Waltham's first production derived from their acquisition of the Nashua Watch
Company in 1862. These first run 20 size movements were comprised directly of Nashua Watch Co.
produced components and these movements retain their Nashua Watch Co. assembly numbering
internally and were engraved on their back plate with "American Watch Co" signature and serial
numbers starting with 50,001. Disassembly of this example reveals typical Nashua Watch Co.
construction and consistent Nashua Watch Co. numbering in multiple areas, and notes from our
disassembly are included in the condition report below. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt
220 condition overall, very short scratch near center, some typical mild fine to micro-fine scratches $3,000 -
elsewhere, some oxide and micro-fine scratch striations to steelwork of barrel arbor escutcheon and $5,600
maltese cross, notes from disassembly are the Nashua serial number 163 is marked to the underside of
the top plate, to the pillar plate, to the underside of the balance cock, the corresponding serial number
63 is marked to the underside of the pallet bridge, no serial number is evident to the underside of the
balance wheel spar (arm) or to the hour or minute wheels, the pillar plate of this example has the
distinctive Nashua Watch Co. features of an auxiliary plate for ease of train disassembly, and the
pillar plate also has "1.87" and ".30" marking at its perimeter as is typical to Nashua production,

79.1 dwt (123.1 g). A very early example from the initial year of the Appleton Tracy & Co.'s
existence, this movement is from a production run listed in Waltham records as having been made in
December of 1857. This movement has the notable early production features of a total jewel count of
16 (with center wheel arbor jeweled under the dial) and a blued steel disk around its barrel arbor.
222 These features were characteristic of the earliest production of Appleton Tracy & Co. grade $2,600 -
movements, but were short-lived as this grade's production was soon after changed to 15 jewel $3,400
movements with gilt cups around their barrel arbors. It appears that casemaker Wheeler, Parsons &
Co. may have been incorporated in 1867 which would date the case of this example to some years after
its movement's production. Mvt: Running, excellent-plus mint cosmetic mvt condition overall,
excellent gilt tone, some mild fingerprint type etching at small portions of plate perimeter, few micro-

American Pocket Watches Part 3 of 3
"American Calendar Watch Co, Pat. Feb. 13. 1866." marked dial, "W. Parker, New York" marked mvt,
calendar watch, 15J, 18S, coin silver Am Watch Co HC recase, white enamel DS dial with aperture
below 12 for calendar display via a rotating silvered disk under dial, KWKS, electrum gilt mvt, s#141.
This early calendar watch is based on the design of Edward Oppenheimer that was granted U.S. patent
number 52591. Though the plate layout of this movement bears overall similarity to Waltham's Model
1857 design; there are numerous notable differences between the present piece and Waltham's Model
1857 production including its substantially different gilt finish appearance which is of the Swiss style
electrum color, differences to the exact shape and size of its barrel bridge and balance cock, the
spacing between its case screw position and the adjacent plate screw position, the number and position
of dial feet locations and the associated machining of its dial plate, the location of its hairspring stud,
and the appearance of plate jeweling. For this reason we do not make any claim that the present watch
has any degree of American-made material or finishing, and note that the reason we have listed this
339 watch among the American portion of this sale is due to its signature and the historical interest of its $500 -
U.S. patented calendar design. Based on the paucity of known examples, this "American Calendar $1,000
Watch Co." watch appears to be quite rare and we are only aware of a small handful of others known,
each of these having a serial number in relatively close proximity to the present example. For images
and discussion of several other known examples we recommend the April 2009 NAWCC Bulletin
article "Ten in Twenty Million?" by Joe "J.C." Cohen as well as another individual's 2015 NAWCC
Message Board posting of photos of serial number 164 that include under-dial views. Mvt: NR, fully
wound, balance is gummy but will swing for a few brief arcs with a twist, calendar advancing when
hands are set forward, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to
micro-fine scratches and some mild surface spots, mild ultra-fine scratch striations likely from a past
light wiping; dial is loose to mvt as one of its two dial feet is broken off and currently is remaining
within mvt, dial with crudely patched chip at 2, scattered hls; fine hands; case is missing its push to
release the front latch so front must be snapped open and closed, case shows ample wear, mild dent to
lower left perimeter of rear, greatly reduced engraving detail; bow pivots freely, push is missing; good
glass crystal.
Baldwin & Jones, Boston, verge fusee of English manufacture with seconds-register and hacking
340 function, 56mm, silver OF original pair cases bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1818, incuse "V & $600 -
Co" marking for casemaker Vale & Company, outer containing paper for Jubal Howe "Watch Maker $1,200
at Jones, Lows & Ball of 123 Washington St., Boston," white enamel dial, hacking slide below dial at
4, KWKS, verge escapement, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with ornately engraved balance cock, gilt
locking dust-cap, s#734. An attractive piece with early American contract marking, though this watch
is of English manufacture we have listed it here among American timepieces due to the interest of its
signature. The case paper of this example is of particular historical significance to early American
horology, as Jubal Howe was an apprentice of Luther Goddard that went on to head the watch repair
department of Jones, Lows & Ball during which time a young Aaron L. Dennison was employed for
repair service and worked under Howe's tutelage. Mvt: Running, good hacking function, excellent-
plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, some typical micro-fine scratches; dial with
some hls, very small associated surface flake left of 2, some edge wear under bezel between 12 and
1:30; excellent hour and seconds-hand, minute hand is a brass replacement with mild bend; outer case
shows light wear, dent to lower left perimeter of rear, dent to bezel at 8, dings to bezel at 6, few lesser
dings and nicks elsewhere, hinge missing one end-cap, button latch good; inner case shows light wear,
some scattered dings and nicks with the most notable being a protruding ding to upper rear; bow
pivots freely; glass bull's-eye crystal with some scattered scratches.
Ball Hamilton, Official B of LE Standard (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers), 17J, Grade 999B,
18S, gold-filled OF case, white enamel SS dial with B of LE logo, pierced Ball style hour and minute
hands, SW-LS, sunburst pattern nickel damascene, s#118382. This example notably has a damascene
pattern which is substantially rare among 17 jewel Ball Hamilton production. While this sunburst
damascene pattern is the norm for 21 jewel and 23 jewel 18 size Ball Hamilton movements, we have
only seen a very small handful of Ball Hamilton 17 jewel examples with the sunburst damascene and
all have been within a run of 50 serial numbers between 118351 and 118400. Of these, this is the first
341 example with Brotherhood marking we have encountered as the couple others we've seen have had $1,200 -
"Official RR Standard" marking instead. Mvt: NR, mainspring and balance staff seem likely broken, $2,200
overhaul needed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, scattered small
fine to micro-fine scratches, some bits of oxide to regulator; nearly flawless dial with few small fine to
micro-fine scratches; fine hands, hour was presumably originally plum colored but is now with full
finish loss, minute is plum colored, seconds-hand is a blue colored replacement; case shows little
wear, some abrasions to band at 1:30 and also to adjacent perimeter of rear, no dents or dings, engine
turning detail with mild reduction at shoulder; bow pivots freely, crown shows light wear; good glass
crystal.
Ball Hamilton, Official Standard, Grade 998 Elinvar, 23J, 16S, white gold-filled OF original Ball
Official RR Standard stirrup bow case with pattern engraving to rear, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS,
mono-metallic balance with blued Elinvar hairspring, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel
arbor, bull's-eye pattern nickel damascene, s#B649795. The 998 Elinvar had a total production of 2700
342 made and was produced between 1939 and 1942. From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: $1,000 -
Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with typical scattered fine to micro-fine $1,400
scratches, some marring to the escape wheel jewel setting, mild oxide to regulator assembly and some
small oxide spots to winding wheels; virtually flawless dial with very small scuff at edge under bezel at
9:30; fine hands with oxide; case shows very light wear, no dents or dings, reduced engraving detail;
tight bow with areas of wear to brass, crown shows light wear; plastic crystal with some fine scratches
and glue visible around its seat.
Ball Hamilton, "Ball's Standard, Railroad Watch Co, Cleveland O" marked mvt and dial, Grade 999E,
17J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase with initial to rear shield, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, bull's-eye and
rosette pattern nickel damascene, s#20663. A rare early Ball Hamilton variant, the 17 jewel "Railroad
Watch Co." was made in only a single run of 300 watches spanning serial numbers 20501 to 20800.
343 From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: Ticking sluggishly, excess escapement noise in some $600 -
positions, overhaul recommended, bright lustrous surfaces, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; dial $1,000
with faint hl in center section above seconds-register, faint outer chapter hls at 6:30 and 7:30, dial
with partially patched edge chip at 1:30 which is largely under bezel, small edge chip under bezel
near 9; excellent hands; case shows medium wear, few dings to band and rear, reduced engraving
detail; bow pivots freely, crown shows medium wear; glass crystal with small edge chip at left, edge
flake at lower right.
Ball Hamilton, Official RR Standard with scarce "Single Roller" marking, Grade 999E, 17J, 18S, gold-
344 filled OF recase, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, circular pattern nickel damascene, s#90671. "Single $300 -
Roller" marked Ball Hamilton movements are quite scarce and were made in only a few short runs $550
among the relatively early end of Ball Hamilton production. A significant portion of this Ball
Hamilton "Single Roller" production was paired with an attractive double-sunk dial, as seen on the
present example. From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt
condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, scattered mild fine to micro-fine scratches, mismatched
case screws; excellent dial with faint outer chapter hl at 8, some fine to micro-fine scratches to
seconds-register and outer chapter; excellent hands; case shows medium to ample wear, ding to center
rear, some scattered nicks, large portion of wear to brass to lower area of band, sizable areas of wear
to brass to pendant, slivers of wear to brass following band seams; tight brassy bow, replacement
crown shows very little wear; glass crystal with small scrape near center.
Ball Hampden, "Ball's Standard Superior Grade" marked mvt, 17J, 18S, silver OF recase with nickel
cuvette, "Webb C. Ball, Cleveland O" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, s#759621. A scarce
watch; Ball Hampden movements were made with signatures including "Ball's Standard Superior
Grade," "Ball's Standard High Grade," and simply "Ball's Standard." Mvt: Ticking somewhat
sluggishly, overhaul recommended, partial disassembly reveals a small piece of tissue inserted under
the balance cock presumably to adjust for imperfect balance end shake, correctly corresponding serial
345 numbers of 59621 to underside of balance cock and 621 to underside of balance wheel spar (arm), no $800 -
serial number to underside of barrel bridge which is correct and typical to examples of this Ball $1,400
Hampden marking we have observed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to
micro-fine scratches and small surface spots, a number of screw heads with gilt loss; dial with
numerous scattered hls, some mild fine scratches, small fractures tight along perimeter at 8:30; case
shows little wear, a moderate patina, some scratches to cuvette from past slipped openings, small but
deep ding to band at 10, no dents; tight bow, crown shows little wear; glass crystal with edge chips at
7 and lesser edge flakes at 12.
Columbus, Railway King, 23J, 18S, gold-filled OF swingout recase with attractive engine turning and
engraving detail to rear, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel
arbor, nickel damascene, s#503222. An attractive example of this rare watch, the total production of 23
jewel open face Columbus movements is believed to be 360 made per Greg Frauenhoff and John
Dimar's excellent article in the June 2003 NAWCC Bulletin. Of this total, it appears the much larger
majority were signed "Columbus King" rather than being signed "Columbus Railway King" as the
346 present example, as of the twenty-five examples noted by serial number in the article there are twenty- $600 -
three "Columbus King" as compared to only two "Columbus Railway King." Mvt: Running, winds $1,000
somewhat stiffly, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces with few micro-
fine scratches; dial with light outer chapter hl at 2:20, tiny surface nick to inner rim of outer chapter
at 10:30, few minuscule pinpoint surface nicks elsewhere; excellent hour and seconds-hand, fine
minute hand with ample finish loss and some oxide to tip; case shows very light wear, no dents or
dings, engraving detail with mild reduction, spots of wear to brass to pendant; tight bow, crown shows
medium wear; good thick glass crystal.
Cornell Watch Co, San Francisco, 11-15J, 18S, 4oz coin silver Am Watch Co HC recase with gold
hinges, white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#24624. An attractive example from this scarce and
short-lived maker, the Cornell Watch Co. of San Francisco was only in operation between 1874 and
1876. Mvt: Running after a twist to start, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt
tone, plates with some scattered small spots; excellent dial with some scattered small light brown spots
347 of discoloration, some small edge flakes under bezel at lower right and upper left; excellent hands, $400 -
hour and minute with some small bits of oxide and finish loss; case with weak front lift spring which $800
needs help through its initial opening motion before proceeding to open lid the remainder under its
own power, case shows very light wear, small shallow crease type dent to front adjacent lower left
edge of engraving detail, mild dent to band at 7:30, prominent crease type dent to lower right of rear,
shallow dent to central left of rear, good engraving detail; tight bow, push shows medium wear; good
glass crystal.
Cornell Watch Co, Chicago, C.T. Bowen, 11-15J, 18S, 3oz coin silver drum style original OF case,
white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#22657. The Cornell Watch Company of Chicago was in
348 operation between 1870 and 1874 and produced approximately 12,000 watches. Mvt: Running, $300 -
excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some scattered spots to plate surface, barrel $450
bridge with ultrafine scratch striations likely from a light wiping; excellent dial; fine hands, minute
with finish loss; case shows light wear, some scratches to rear, shallow but profuse denting to rear,
cuvette with a bit of play at its hinge; tight bow; clean plastic crystal.
349 PW mvt only - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 72, 16S, currently set in OF format, white glass $1,000 -
enamel DS canister-style (friction fit snap-on) dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold $1,600
jewel settings, nickel damascene, s#607038. A scarce top grade movement, we believe total production
of Elgin's Grade 72 was approximately 450 made as all examples we have observed have fallen neatly
within only the 607001 to 607450 portion of the larger serial number block (607001 to 608000) that
was reserved for this grade. Mvt: Ticking somewhat sluggishly, balance wheel with no serial number
scribed to the underside of its spars (arms), overhaul recommended, excellent cosmetic mvt condition
overall, plates with some typical mild micro-fine scratches, steelwork with some bits of oxide, one case
screw is mismatched; nearly flawless dial with small fine scratches at edge outside 10 and 1, subtle
faintly visible shadow in glaze of seconds-register in shape of Shriners symbol which was presumably
once overpainted on dial surface but is now gone leaving only a light trace visible only at certain
lighting angles; excellent hands.
PW mvt only - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 91, three-finger bridge mvt, 16S, currently set in
OF format, white glass enamel DS canister-style (friction fit snap-on) dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever
escapement, raised gold jewel settings, nickel damascene, s#942145. A rare top grade movement, we
believe total production of Elgin's Grade 91 was approximately 350 made as all examples we have
350 observed have fallen neatly within only the 942001 to 942350 portion of the larger serial number block $1,000 -
(942001 to 943000) that was reserved for this grade. Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition $1,600
overall, scattered fine scratches, steelwork with mild oxide, concave polished steel wheel above barrel
with circular marks indicative of polishing for oxide removal, case screws are replacements with
smaller head size diameter; dial with hls in center section, outer chapter hl at 5, some perimeter wear
which is most notable at upper and lower portions; excellent hands.
Elgin, B.W. Raymond with winding indicator, Grade 494, 23J, 16S, rose gold-filled OF original B.W.
Raymond Model case with elegant black enamel inlay to bezel, rear perimeter and bow, white enamel
DS dial with Canadian market 13 to 24 hour indications, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement,
jeweled barrel arbor, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#34682553. An excellent example of this high
grade railroad watch with a very attractive combination of 24 hour dial and rose colored case with
enamel inlay, the total production of the Grade 494 was 5000 made with all examples having winding
351 indicator feature. Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous $500 -
surfaces, some typical fine to micro-fine scratches, areas of lettering with losses of black color; nearly $900
flawless dial with a scratch to upper right portion of winding indicator register, few typical mild
micro-fine scratches elsewhere; excellent-plus hands, minute with small bit of oxide and finish loss to
its tip; case shows little wear, no dents or dings, minuscule slivers of wear to brass to portions of the

Raymond Model recase with rigid bow, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement,
striped pattern nickel damascene, s#33815000. This example is from the first production run of Grade
506, and is in fact the last serial number made from this initial run which was relatively small being of
352 only 100 watches. Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt $400 -

original fitted Hamilton box containing certificate bearing movement and case serial numbers correctly $300

nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, some mild haze to plate surfaces which would probably
benefit from a cleaning; dial with some scattered small brown spots, some brownish discoloration in
areas which is most notable at perimeter between 11 and 12; poor minute and hour hands are rusted
likely from a previous plastic crystal's deterioration; case shows hardly any wear, rear with some fine
scratches and profuse micro-fine scratches, cuvette with fine scratches from slipped past openings, no
dents or dings, superb engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; clean plastic crystal;
box in fine cosmetic condition overall, exterior with wear and areas of finish loss which are most
notable at edges, interior with wear and velvet loss in areas around seat of watch. Chain shows light
to medium wear with wear to brass to portions of its links.

California. Mvt: Ticking sluggishly, overhaul recommended, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition $700
overall, some scattered small fine to micro-fine scratches, some small bits of oxide to regulator index;

beautiful engine turning and engraving detail, Ferguson white enamel DS impressed dial, red Ferguson
hour hand, SW-LS, nickel damascene, s#236302. The original Ferguson dial of this watch is rare in 18
size Hamilton version and is in the typical Swiss made style. This example also has the notable feature
of a seldom seen original red Ferguson hour hand still present. The "Official Standard" movement
marking is scarce to rare and Grade 936 movements with this marking were made for the Smith
356 Patterson Company of Boston, Massachusetts. This particular serial number is listed in the Hamilton $800 -
factory ledger as having been sold to Smith Patterson on November 26th, 1904. From the well-known $1,500

engraving detail, white enamel DS dial with marginal minute numerals, SW-LS, fully capped lever
escapement, nickel damascene, s#432106. Comes with an attached leather strap with "Hamilton
Standard" marked brass and red enameled fob. An attractive watch with combination of rare
357 movement marking and very rare dial marking. The "Inspector's Standard" marked movements were $600 -
made for the Smith Patterson Co. of Boston, Massachusetts in Grade 940, Grade 992, and Grade 993 $1,000
versions. The dial of this example represents an early version of Henry S. Montgomery's marginal
minute design, and notably this example (along with the very few identically marked others we've
encountered) does not include a "6" hour numeral within its seconds-register so it differs in this respect
from the marginal minute design that Montgomery ultimately established into mass production. From
the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Ticking but
with very sluggish balance motion of low amplitude when in dial-up position, winds stiffly, overhaul

chapter hl at 3:30; nearly mint hands; case shows very little wear, ding to rear of band at 7:30,
excellent engine turning and engraving detail, inner surface of rear is largely through to brass and has
a spotted finish that was likely imparted at a later point in the case's existence; tight bow, crown shows
little wear; good glass crystal. Fob and strap appear to be likely of relatively modern era creation,
both in excellent cosmetic condition.
Hamilton, Grade 941 with scarce two-tone damascene, 21J, 18S, gold-filled original HC with beautiful
engine turning and floral engraving detail, small house scene at lower rear, white enamel DS dial,
fleur-de-lis hour and minute hands, SW-LS, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#205595. A
beautiful watch throughout, this example is particularly notable for the exceptional preservation of its
movement's two-tone color which exhibits a deep rich gold color with fiery bright luster. This serial
number is listed in the Hamilton ledger as having been sold to the Non-Retailing Co. of Lancaster, PA
358 on July 25th, 1903 and is from a group of 40 consecutive serial numbers (205561 to 205600) that this $600 -
firm purchased between July and September of 1903. From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: $1,000

movement (940, 941, 942 and 943) as well as two grades of 17 jewel movement (926 and 927). The
Grade 942 and Grade 943 versions are the finest quality of these grades and are the only version of the
359 "Paragon Time-Keeper" to feature gilt screws and regulator assembly. From the well-known Hamilton $700 -
collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running after a twist to start, setting $1,400

desirable railroad watch, this variant with "992 Special" marked movement and "8 Adjustments"
360 marking above the dial seconds-register represents Hamilton's final version of the Grade 992 $700 -
"Adjusted For Railroad Service" marked watch. Like nearly all known examples, this movement has a $1,300
secondary number (37022 in this instance) scratched in small size on the plate surface adjacent to the
factory serial number. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst,
California. Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, good two-tone color, few mild
micro-fine scratches, few very small surface spots; dial with extremely small bits of white fill material
to the seating of its center section evident upon very close inspection indicating re-securing of dial
components and suggesting possibility of dial's outer chapter and/or seconds-register having been
replacements taken from another Hamilton dial as a "donor," dial with very faint hl below seconds-
register at 6, extremely faint outer chapter hl at 10, some perimeter rub in areas under bezel; excellent
time-zone hour hands and seconds-hand, fair minute hand has been overpainted in black; case shows

Hamilton, Grade 993 with rare two-tone damascene, 21J, 16S, gold-filled original HC with attractive
engine turning and engraving detail, fancy white and blue enamel SS dial with gold foil numerals
against blue backgrounds, blue color at center, gold foil decorations in two shades, SW-LS, fully
capped lever escapement, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#367535. A very attractive watch with
a rare two-tone movement finish, this serial number is listed in the Hamilton ledger as having been
sold to the Non-Retailing Co. of Lancaster, PA on January 9th, 1907, and this watch is from a group of
363 40 consecutive serial numbers (367521 to 367560) which the Non-Retailing Co. purchased between $700 -
December 1906 and March 1907. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of $1,300
Olivehurst, California. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good two-tone color,
few small surface spots to barrel bridge in space between serial number and larger winding wheel,
oxide to regulator spring; nearly flawless dial with two minuscule flakes to rim of center hole, some
very small flaking under bezel tight along perimeter at 11:30; excellent hands with some small spots of
oxide and areas of finish loss; case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning

Hampden, "Boston Watch Co" marked mvt and dial, mvt with very unusual regulator, 15J, 18S, HC
364 model mvt cased in sidewinder orientation in nickel OF display recase, white enamel SS dial, finished $300 -
by Hampden as KWKS but mvt now with an Abbott's patent SW-shift-locking-LS attachment, nickel $600
damascene, s#69384. A very interesting piece for the early Hampden collector, this movement features
an eye-catching regulator design that appears to be based on Frank C. Goold's regulator patent of
October 17th, 1882 (U.S. Patent 266256). This is only the third example of this regulator style we have
encountered, and notably all three examples we have seen have been with "Boston Watch Co." signed
Hampden watches. The other two examples we had seen had been on somewhat lower grade
movements, while the present example is notable for being a top quality early grade (presumably a
"Railway" grade movement, based on serial number and features) with gold jewel settings, gold
balance screws, mirror finish steelwork, and very attractive nickel damascene. Mvt: Running, good
setting function though setting lever shifts stiffly in and out of engagement, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt
condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces with few small spots and mild fine to micro-fine scratches,
patch of oxide to click, some pinpoint specks of oxide to steel disk around winding arbor escutcheon,
case screw is a replacement which is very well matched other than a bit smaller head diameter than
the original; excellent dial with fine scratch right of seconds-register at 4:30, few small edge flakes
and other small edge flaws under bezel; fine hands, minute with finish loss; case front opens a bit wide
of 90 degrees (approximately 105 degrees), case shows very little wear, dent to front adjacent hinge,
dings to front adjacent crystal at 8 and 10:30, pinpoint nick to rear adjacent hinge; tight bow, crown
shows very little wear; clean plastic crystals.
Howard Keystone, 17J, 12S, 14K gold original Howard clamshell style swingout case, "J E J" initials
to rear, signature ring inside rear as well as engraving "Masters and Marine Engineers to Lt. J.E. Jones
U.S.N. Canal Zone May 1924," white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, nickel-plated train wheels, nickel
damascene, s#1324966. Comes with an associated Howard wooden box with tattered remains of
certificate for a different watch. Gross weight of assembled watch 37.1 dwt (57.7 g). Mvt: Running,
365 virtually mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, essentially pristine surfaces with some mild surface $400 -
dirtiness; virtually flawless dial with minuscule fine scratch at edge near 1; nearly mint hands; case $550
shows hardly any wear, some small scratches to edge adjacent opening lip of bezel, no dents or dings,
excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; plastic crystal with glue excess at
its seat is lifting up slightly from bezel at lower right, watch would benefit from its replacement by a
properly sized glass crystal. Box in fine cosmetic condition with some dings, scrapes and scratches to
exterior; certificate with serial numbers for a differing watch is torn and incomplete.
Illinois, Inter State Chronometer, 23J, 18S, nickel OF original case, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS,
fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, gilt mvt screws and
regulator assembly, s#2336457. A rare top grade private label, the total production of the 23 jewel 18
size Inter State Chronometer is believed to be only 250 made with all made in a single run spanning
serial numbers 2336351 to 2336600. This example is notable for the exceptional preservation of its
movement's two-tone color. From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: Running though with
366 excess escapement noise in some positions, overhaul recommended, nearly mint cosmetic mvt $800 -
condition overall, superb two-tone color and luster, small dark spot to foot of balance cock; dial with $1,400
patch of mild abrasion left of center, some fine scratches at perimeter near 5, few small fine to micro-
fine scratches elsewhere, minuscule pinpoint flake to inner corner of outer chapter adjacent seconds-
register at 7; fine hands, hour with slight bend, seconds-hand is very slightly long; case shows light
wear, ample tarnish throughout with some dark brown spots at upper left perimeter; bow pivots freely
and has some verdigris to its upper rear, crown shows medium wear; glass crystal with some glue
excess at its seat.
Illinois, Washington Watch Co, Lafayette, 23J, 16S, gold-filled original HC with "W" marking for
Montgomery Ward & Co, very attractive engine turning and engraving detail, white enamel DS dial,
SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, capped third wheel, one-finger bridge Getty Model mvt, nickel
damascene, s#2202984. An excellent example of this rare high grade private label; based on a close
study of Washington Watch Co. production runs, we believe the total production of this 23 jewel
Model 4 "Lafayette" to be approximately 195 made. Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt
367 condition overall, small bit of oxide at perimeter of winding wheel; dial with faint outer chapter hl at $800 -
10:30 that splits into a fork at its inner base and that along one branch has a minuscule pinpoint sized $1,300
flake to the inner rim of the outer chapter, very small scratch below center; excellent hands, minute
with a small bit of oxide near its tip; case front with wear to its inner lip at latch area, case front does
typically remain closed when shut with a secure squeeze but on infrequent occasion has opened
unintentionally after being closed, case exterior shows hardly any wear, few very small nicks to band,
superb engine turning and engraving detail; bow pivots freely, crown shows very little wear; good
glass crystal.
Illinois, Bunn Special with rare bright spotted damascene, 23J, 16S, gold-filled OF original case,
Montgomery white enamel DS Gothic numeral dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled
barrel, bright spotted pattern nickel damascene, s#2572686. The bright spotted pattern was the first
damascene used among 16 size Bunn Special production. This damascene is rare among 23 jewel 16
size Bunn Specials with a total of 510 produced in three different variants; the present example with
"D'Bl Roller" movement marking represents the earliest of these three variants and has an estimated
368 total production of 200 made. From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: Ticking somewhat $700 -
sluggishly, overhaul recommended, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous $1,100
surfaces, balance cock with some micro-fine scratches at perimeter, plates with few micro-fine
scratches elsewhere, minuscule speck of oxide to perimeter of larger winding wheel, mild bits of oxide
to regulator assembly; dial with light outer chapter hls at 9, patch of abrasion left of 4, few scattered
small scratches and fine scratches; fair hands with portions of finish loss and oxide; cased shows light
wear, prominent denting to rear, nicks to band, inner surface of rear is largely through to brass; bow
pivots freely, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
Illinois, Bunn Special, 23J 60 Hour, Type III marking, 16S, white gold-filled OF original Bunn Special
Model 28 case, "Illinois Bunn Special 23 Jewel 60 Hour" marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully
capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, rayed pattern nickel damascene, s#5218825. An
excellent example of this high grade railroad watch; this movement features an "Illinois Watch"
factory marking rather than the "Illinois Watch Co." marking more commonly seen among Type III
production; this marking variant is identified as Type III (H) in Michael Chamelin's Bunn Special book
and is mentioned with an estimated production of two-to-three thousand made. Mvt: Running,
369 nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, some small micro-fine scratches to polished concave $550 -
portion of larger winding wheel, few small fine scratches to barrel bridge in small area between click $800
and smaller winding wheel; flawless dial; nearly mint hands; case shows little wear, no dents or dings,
few minimal pinpoint nicks to band, minuscule sliver of wear to brass just starting to form at portion of
upper right shoulder of rear and small portion of upper left shoulder of rear, tiny bits of wear to brass
to high corners of band "shoulders" and to high corners of pendant, some scratches inside rear from
past rubbing of at least one of the larger winding wheel's motor barrel screws; tight bow with thin
slivers of wear to brass to upper edges and small strips of wear to brass to underside, crown shows
little wear; good glass crystal.
Illinois, Grade 89, 17J, 18S, 3oz coin silver OF recase with beautiful engine turning and floral
engraving detail, offset gold hinges, fancy blue and white enamel SS dial with extensive gold foil
decoration, gilt hands, SW-LS, two-tone checkerboard pattern gilt and nickel damascene, s#3224584.
An extraordinary dial, fancy enamel Illinois signed dials of any style are rare and more colorful
examples such as this in flawless condition are particularly rare. Mvt: Running, crown lifts very
370 easily out of engagement when winding if not given a touch of downward pressure while turning, $500 -
nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent two-tone color, barrel bridge with a mismatched $900

white central portion with the most notable of these being inside 10; fine hands, minute is somewhat
short and has some bend near its midpoint and finish loss to its tip; case shows virtually no wear, a
light patina, a grouping of small nicks to band around 7:30, no dents or dings, superb crisp engine
turning and engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.
Illinois, "The Miners' Watch" marked mvt, "W. Manning Virginia Nev." marked dial, 11J, 18S, coin
silver OF original pair case with hidden key within pendant, nickel cuvette, white enamel SS dial,
KWKS, gilt mvt, s#30957. A very interesting and notably rare private label signature, this is only the
second example of the Illinois "The Miners' Watch" which we have encountered. Virginia City,
Nevada was the site of the 1859 "Comstock Lode," which was the first major silver ore discovery in
the United States. Virginia City developed very rapidly following the Comstock Lode discovery as
371 miners rushed in to pursue their fortunes, and Virginia City's population peaked at approximately $400 -
25,000 in the mid-1870s which corresponds with when this watch was produced. W. Manning's $800
jewelry business was located in Virginia City at No. 76A South C Street, and Manning advertised in
1878 as having the "largest stock of diamonds and watches, chains and jewelry in the State of
Nevada." Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some scattered haze,
small spots and short fine scratches, balance cock screw is a non-blued replacement; dial with edge
flake near 8:30, short perimeter scratch near 11:30; excellent hands; case shows little wear, an
attractive moderate patina with some scattered darker spots, dent to perimeter at 8, lesser dent to
upper right perimeter of rear, few mild dings elsewhere, cuvette with profuse mild to moderate
abrasions, hidden key with good function; tight bow, key cap shows light wear; thick glass crystal with
some scattered fine scratches, short scratches, and tiny edge nicks.
Illinois, Bunn Special with scarce bright spotted damascene, 21J, 16S, gold-filled OF original case
with train engraving to rear, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, bright
spotted pattern nickel damascene, s#2571916. A scarce to rare watch, the total production of this
variant of Bunn Special 21 jewel with bright spotted damascene is estimated at 680 made per Michael
Chamelin's Bunn Special book. Also of note is that this watch is from the first ever run of 16 size Bunn
Special production, and this example is from the very early portion of this run being just the 16th Bunn
372 Special 16 size made by serial number. From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: Running, $400 -
nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, few small fine to micro-fine $600
scratches; dial with small flake to inner rim of outer chapter inside 2, fine scratch below 12, edge flake
under bezel at 9; excellent hour and seconds-hand, fine minute hand with patch of oxide and areas of
finish loss; case shows medium to ample wear, ding to upper rear perimeter, few scattered nicks,
reduced engraving detail, thin strips of wear to brass following band seams, patch of wear to brass to
band at 11, areas of wear to brass to pendant; brassy bow pivots freely, crown shows ample wear;
glass crystal with numerous small scratches.
Illinois, Currier first run, serial #474, 11J, 18S, 4oz coin silver OF original Dueber case with offset
gold hinges, "Springfield Watch Co." marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#474. An
excellent original early example, the first run of Currier production spanned serial numbers 401 to 500
and was finished between March and June of 1872 with this particular serial number having been
finished in June. Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone,
373 small scratch and abrasion to barrel bridge adjacent barrel arbor escutcheon, few scattered mild $400 -
small haze spots; dial with short hls below seconds-register at 5:30, extremely faint hls between top of $800
seconds-register and edge at 10:30, minuscule edge nick under bezel at 11; excellent hands, tiny patch
of rust to tip of minute; case shows light wear, some typical fine to micro-fine scratches and pinpoint
nicks, no dents or dings, rear hinge missing an end-cap and front hinge missing a portion of an end-
cap; bow pivots freely and with a bit of play within pendant sockets; glass crystal with small edge chip
at 4:30 and a bit of glue excess at its seat.
Illinois, Bunn Special, 21J 60 Hour, Type III marking, green gold-filled OF original Bunn Special
Model case, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, rayed pattern nickel
damascene, s#5030570. The dial of this example is quite scarce and is notable for its extremely bold
Arabic hour numerals in combination with outward facing arrows at each minute position; this dial is
affectionately known as the "Fat Boy" style among many Bunn Special collectors and is discussed on
page 284 of Michael Chamelin's Bunn Special book. The "kite" style hands seen with this example are
often found in combination with this particular dial. This example is also notable for its uncommon
green gold-filled case. Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, oxide to perimeter of
374 smaller winding wheel at one side, scratch at perimeter of barrel bridge adjacent case screw near $300 -
adjustment markings, some micro-fine scratches to larger winding wheel; dial with very small patched $500
edge chip under bezel at 5:30, few small adjacent outer chapter hls at 5:30, minuscule pinpoint
surface nick at upper left perimeter of seconds-register to base of 55 second hash mark, some mild
beveling rub of perimeter under bezel, seconds-register appears possibly to have been re-seated with a
few small bits of fill material visible at the seating of its lower portion; nearly mint hands; case shows
little wear, few fine scratches and profuse micro-fine scratches to rear, profuse dings to band between
1 and 4 as well as between 11 and 12, small mar to edge of rear adjacent the band below the right side
of the pendant and short associated nearby scratch, good engraving detail, sliver of wear to brass to
bezel adjacent crystal between 6 and 9; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal with
some small beveling of its edge at upper left.
Illinois, Bunn, 17J, 18S, gold-filled HC recase with attractive engraving detail including a small
lakeside home scene to rear, white enamel DS Gothic numeral dial, SW-LS, sunburst pattern nickel
damascene, s#2248205. This hunting case variant of the 17 jewel 18 size Bunn with sunburst
375 damascene is notably rare. At the time Bill Meggers' Illinois book was written the production of this $350 -
variant was estimated at 200 made corresponding to a single production run listed in the factory $650
records between serial numbers 2248201 to 2248400, but more recent study has found that observed
examples have all fallen within the early portion of the production run suggesting the possibility that
half or more of this run may not have been finished and that the actual production may in fact be in the
range of 100 or less made. An ongoing discussion thread on the NAWCC Message Board is tracking
these examples, and lists ten known examples all of which have serial numbers within the first 80
watches of the run and lists no known examples with serial numbers beyond the first 80 watches of the
run. From the collection of Charlie Winters. Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition
overall, bright lustrous surfaces, small scratch to foot of balance cock, mild circular fine scratch
around one barrel bridge screw, few typical small micro-fine scratches elsewhere; virtually flawless
dial with only some minuscule pinpoint edge nicks under bezel; excellent hands; case shows very light
wear, no dents or dings, good engraving detail overall though with loss of fine detail at front and rear
shoulders, slivers of wear to brass to high points of pendant, front hinge is missing its end-caps; tight
bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.
Newark Watch Co, Robert Fellows, 11-15J, 18S, 4oz coin silver original HC, "Newark Watch Works"
marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#10323. Gross weight of assembled watch 116.0 dwt
(180.2 g). An excellent example from this uncommon early maker. Mvt: Running though with
excess escapement noise and some sluggishness when in dial down position, overhaul recommended,
excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, some micro-fine scratches and mild
376 haze spots, some circular rub at case screw location where it appears a larger sized screw was once $400 -
used; virtually flawless dial with infinitesimal pinpoint nick at upper perimeter of seconds-register; $800
nearly mint hands; case shows little wear, an attractive moderate patina, small scratch at lower left
perimeter of rear, typical fine and micro-fine scratches elsewhere to exterior, cuvette with profuse fine
to micro-fine scratches surrounding winding aperture, ding to lower rear perimeter, good engraving
detail, case rear opens short of 90 degrees (to approximately 75 degrees); bow pivots freely and with
play within pendant sockets, push shows light wear; good glass crystal.
N.Y. Chronograph Watch Co, New York, time only watch with center-seconds, 11-15J, 16S, 5 year
gold-filled OF original case with attractive engraving detail, fancy white and yellow enamel dial with
gold foil decorations, SW-LS, gilt mvt, s#174627. A good example of this scarce watch, it is believed
that at most approximately 1000 examples of this 16 size N.Y. Chronograph Watch Co. model were
produced with known examples having serial numbers dispersed through the 174,001 to 175,000
range. This example, like nearly all observed of the 16 size model, has a main plate that was machined
to accept chronograph mechanism but is lacking chronograph components having been finished as a
time only watch with center-seconds rather than as a chronograph. For further excellent info on this
377 style of watch as well as others by Manhattan Watch Co. and N.Y. Chronograph Watch Co., we $200 -
recommend Michael C. Harrold's excellent two-part article in the April and June 2010 issues of the $400
NAWCC Bulletin. Mvt: Ticking somewhat sluggishly, sweep-seconds-hand with choppy motion
occasionally stalling and then skipping ahead two or more beats, overhaul recommended, excellent
cosmetic mvt condition overall, some small fine scratches, regulator with some oxide, machined to
accept a regulator spring but none is present; dial with scattered hls; fine hands, bend to tip of sweep-
seconds-hand; case shows light wear, shallow denting to rear, reduced engraving detail, engine
turning detail substantially reduced, slivers of wear to brass to raised ridges of case design and some
spots of wear to brass to portions of high points of engraved detail; bow pivots freely, crown shows
light wear; good glass crystal.
Potter & Briggs, Providence R.I., lever fusee with hacking function, 50mm, approximately 12K gold
(tested, exhibiting slow fade of 14K solution on stone and no fade of 10K solution) OF original P&B
marked case with floral detail at center rear, cream colored enamel dial, KWKS, Massey 3 lever
escapement, likely 13J, gilt mvt with floral engraved balance cock with "Patent" marking at its foot,
missing its locking dust-cap, s#4998 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of
assembled watch 62.6 dwt (97.4 g). Although the movement is presumably of English manufacture
and marked for this American retailer, we have listed this watch among our American category due to
378 its American contract signature and due to the distinct possibility that its case was made in America. $1,000 -
From the collection of Robert L. Ravel, M.D. Mvt: Barely ticking with low amplitude after a twist to $1,500
start and stopping frequently, good hacking function, overhaul needed, missing its locking dust-cap,
otherwise excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some haze to central portion of main plate, small
marring to plate adjacent pillar position left of serial number; dial with some hls with majority being
at perimeter between 4 and 6 and near 8, small chip to lower right rim of center hole, small flakes at
center of seconds-register; fine hands; case shows medium wear, ding to bezel at 5, greatly reduced
engine turning detail with full loss to perimeter of rear and to sizable portion of band; tight bow; good
glass crystal.

unusual and intriguing piece, this is the only example of a Model 1857 Appleton Tracy & Co. with
nickel damascene finish that we have encountered. This movement also has notably atypical features
of gold jewel settings and jeweling to the upper end of its center wheel arbor. Please see our comments
in the condition report for observations from a partial disassembly of the movement. Mvt: NR, fully
wound, in the dial down position will tick for a few moments with a twist, when dial up will not tick at
all with a twist, overhaul needed, mvt has been partially disassembled and we observe that plate finish
385 is nickel throughout, damascene pattern is correctly matched among main plate, balance cock and $300 -
barrel bridge, underside of balance cock is marked with s#1163, underside of balance wheel spars $600
(arms) are not marked with any evident s#, underside of barrel bridge is marked with s#11 at one side
and s#16 at the other, and visible surface under dial is marked with s#11163 and s#1163, this
combination of consistent movement finish but inconsistent numbering suggests the possibility that this
watch was either a factory employee's piece or was otherwise finished at Waltham outside of the
course of regular production, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to micro-
fine scratches; dial with edge chip at 5, some small edge flakes elsewhere, faint hl above seconds-
register; excellent hands; case shows medium wear, scratches and fine scratches, some shallow dents
to rear, ding across rear/body seam at 3, few mild dings elsewhere; bow pivots freely; good glass
crystal.
Waltham, Champion, Model 1872, 16J, 16S, gold-filled OF original case with floral engraving detail
to rear in addition to name "C.F. Roughan," vermicelli detail to bezel, band and rear perimeter, white
enamel SS dial, SW-LS, gilt damascene, mirror finish and damascene winding wheels, s#4527195.
The Champion is a rare watch with a total production of only 200 made; this grade was made with a
range of attractive gilt damascene patterns and was produced in a single run that is notable for being
386 the highest serial numbers found among Model 1872 regular production. Mvt: Ticking somewhat $200 -
sluggishly and with error in the flat of its balance motion after a twist to start, overhaul recommended, $400
excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt damascene tone, short scratch at center
between jewel setting and larger winding wheel recess, some oxide to winding wheels and regulator
assembly; dial with edge chip at 8 and associated surrounding hls at perimeter, additional hl
extending inward at 8; case shows very light wear, no dents or dings, mild reduction of engraving
detail, small spots of wear to brass to high ridges of pendant; tight bow, crown shows medium wear
with ample ridge break; good glass crystal.
Waltham, Wm Ellery with modifications for clockwatch function, Model 1877, 9-11J, 18S, mounted
in a 57mm brass case, skeletonized metal perimeter dial chapter, KWKS with second KW barrel for
strike mechanism, gilt mvt, s#1511591. This piece has been extensively modified with the intent to
387 create an hour-striking clockwatch. Mvt: Running, extensively modified for intended clockwatch $200 -
operation, components appear complete with round wire gong but currently not functioning and it is $400
unclear if it ever did function reliably, currently mvt makes no more than a brief noise of power
release when clockwatch function is engaged, overhaul needed for clockwatch function, otherwise fine
cosmetic mvt condition overall, some darkening and haze to portions of gilt plates; skeletonized metal
dial chapter with some oxide; fair hands with some oxide, hour is bent; case shows light wear, ample
