10”שלושה ימים דרומה“ נתן אלתרמן דבר השבוע )מס‘ 50 )1950 סיפור זה מעולם לא נגלה בפנינו. המשורר/סופר נתן אלתרמן יצא מבאר שבע לאילת בדרך לא דרך שנמשכה 3 ימים. כנראה בסוף שנות ה–50 .בחרתי להציג בפניכם את הקטע )האחרון( המתאר את הכניסה לערבה בואכה ים סוף בשפתו המיוחדת של אלתרמן )ש.ת.( מימין לדרך מזדקרת תחנת הקידוח של ביר הינדס. היא באר אורה השולחת מים לאילת. המספרים אומרים כי מאז ימי ביזנץ לא נחפרה בנגב באר חדשה. מוטות ברזל חלודים אלה, התקועים כאן לבדד, זכר לקידוח שנסתיים, אומרים איפוא להיות פתח לספרים חדשים. מן הצד נראית עברונה, תחנת מצפה חקלאית וחוות ניסיון. תמונה זו של נקודת ישוב, שאין רגיל ומוכר ממנה בשאר מקומות בארץ, אף היא כמו אובדת כאן במרחב החדש, כולה גישוש ותהיה. בעבודת ההדרכה עושה כאן איש עין חרוד, וגם זה השם השגור נשמע כמו ממרחקים של שטח ושל זמן. דומה שיחד עם תחומיה של הארץ נפרצו גם זמניה החדשים. אתה מרוחק כבברת דרך וכברת עת רבה מאהליו הראשונים של עמק יזרעאל. מישהו במכונית שולח זרועו קדימה, מצביע אל דרום. ומעתה אנו נוסעים בעמידה. עינינו נשואות לתפוס את נצנוצו הראשון של הים. לא אותו ים שידענו. עוד העיניים תרות אחריו – וכנף יריעה תכולה מונפת באופק. תמונה דקה ורוטטת הולכת וקמה לפניך, שטה ומתקרבת. עוד היא לוטה צעיף, עוד היא רוחפת כמו אד, אך כבר הקווים יוצאים מטשטושם, קורמים דמות, הצבעים מעמיקים, כפות תמרים מתנשאות. השיירה מוסיפה לאוץ קדימה, ולפתע נגול לפניך המפרץ בעטרת הריו ושעריו הפתוחים. ים חדש מביט בך. חופים חדשים. פתח אל יבשת אחרת, הכל טובל באור בשל ועשיר של טרם שקיעה. תכלתם של המים עזה ועמוקה לעין חקר, וקירות החופים עונים כמתכת בהבהוב אדמומי וצהוב. הכל מוטעם וחריף, ועם זאת כמו נסוך עצלתיים של יפעה ובטחה, לא נופם של האבות הרועים ולא נופו של דוד. יריעות שלמה פרושות כאן לפניך, ולא רק מפני שנזכר אתה בעציון גבר וכתם אופיר. המראה מהלך קדמות עתירה ורוגעת, ועם זאת כולו נוצץ בחידושו, על ימו והריו וחופיו. ככתר גנוז שהוצא ממחבוא. כל זה עמד מוכן ומזומן אחר כתלינו... המכונית מטפסת במעלה, עוברת את תפנית הדרך האחרונה. מלמטה מבריק הצריף הצהוב בהיר של בית הממשלה, נראים אגף האכסניה הארוך, שדה התעופה, סירות המנוע במפרץ - הנהי אילת. ...כמו בזרוע מעמיד אותנו הג‘יראפי על כביש הערבה. כאן סובבת השיירה בתפנית חדה דרומה ונערכת בשורה. בטרם תנוע לעבור את כברת הדרך האחרונה לאילת. שני ימי נסיעה בארץ לא סלולה אינם עניין רב ביותר, אבל לאחריהם תופס אתה, מהו סרט צר של כביש המתנוצץ למרחוק. לפנינו עוד כמאה קילומטרים עד המפרץ. אך אלה כמעט אינם נחשבים כעת. אכן לא הכביש בלבד נוטל כאן מן המרחקים את המשמעות שהורגלנו בה. גם סיבה אחרת לדבר, סיבה שסופה לשנות את מושגי המרחק והמרחב של כל אדם מישראל. מפתה החדשה של הארץ, מידותיה החדשות, עוד אינן שגורות עלינו, עוד לא נבלעו בדרכי הישוב ומחשבה שלנו, כדבר שמבלי-משים. האומר כיום ”תל-אביב חיפה“ עודו מעלה בהרהור ערך של מרחק מורגל ומודע, שעוד אינו נקשר מאליו עם ערך תל-אביב – באר-שבע\ ובאר-שבע – עין חוצוב ועין חוצוב – אילת. עוד הפרופורציות הישנות טבועות בנו, אך סופן לפנות מקום לסולם ערכים חדש, מסיבה פשוטה זו שבאר שבע כיום אינה בירכתי הארץ אלא במרכזה, המרחק בין תל אביב לחיפה כמרחק שתי נקודות שכנות בנגב. הכביש שוטף אל מול פנינו קל ומבריק ועד מהרה כבר אתה מקבל אותו כדבר המובן מאליו והמוכן מאליו – ההוראה שניתנה בדרך לשמור על טווח ראיה בין המכוניות, כאן פג תוקפה, והשיירה מתארכת ומתפרדת, אלא שאחד הקומנדקרים, לאחר שנשא באורך רוח את כל הטלטלות והחבטות של שני הימים, יוצא מן המערכה ונתקע ללא ניע דווקא פה בכביש הסלול....מכוניתנו חוזרת על עקבותיה, קושרת אותו אליה בשלשלת, והוא נגרר אץ אחריה כשנהגו גחון על ההגה ומאמץ עיניו מבעד לענן האבק שמפריחים גלגלינו. לאחר דקות מספר אתה מביט לעבר נוסעי המכונית הנגררת, והנה זקנה קפצה עליהם...כולם אנשי שיבה, שפמיהם לבנים מן האבק ועור פניהם כצבע הטיט. רק החרפות והצחוק הרודפים משם אחרינו מעידים כי רוח האנשים עוד בכל זאת צעירה כשהיתה... אנו נוסעים בשוליו של רכס הנגב, ובקיע הערבה נמשך משמאלנו רדוד ורחב. גוונו ירקרק חיוור, ועצי שיטה בודדים ניצבים בו פה ושם, רכוני גזע, כמו כפופים על מלאכה נעלמה, ונופם נטוי דרומה עם הרוח. כתמי נוה ומים, שירקותם כהה יותר, צופים מתוך העזובה, בשפתה המזרחית של היריעה, אשר שם המעיינות. אך על הכל חולש רכס ההרים שבמזרח. כל הערבה כולה, על החי הסמוי הרוחש בלי קול בסבכיה, על דממת העוף הפורח בה, הכל כמו הודבר תחתיהם. הרי אדום...אתה הולך ונוסע דרומה ועיניך אינן ניתקות מהם. הם נישאים חומות על גבי חומות, געש זקוף ומאובן של צוקים וחדודים ורוכסי סלע. הם עומדים כהמולה רמה ופולחת שפתאום ניטל קולה. כמי עשן כבד שקפא ונסתלע, רכס גלמי וחרוך זה נראה לך כחומר היולי, אשר ממנו נוצקו נופי המקרא. הללו אנושיים ממנו בני דעת יותר. הרכז הזה הוא בדרך אליהם...הוא נשאר על סיפם ולא עבר אותו עם השבטים. זהו הפרוור החשוך והעשן של ספר הספרים.
