Named after William Mulholland,
the architect of the Los Angeles

Downtown
Downtown LA is a microcosm of the city’s past,
present, and future. El Pueblo commemorates the
city’s Spanish origins, while Chinatown and Little Tokyo
are vibrant communities. The city’s financial center,
along Flower and Figueroa streets, sits in sharp
contrast to the early 20th-century architecture
around Pershing Square. Cultural sites include the
renowned Museum of Contemporary Art, the Walt Disney
Concert Hall, and the galleries of the Arts District. The
Fashion and Jewelry districts also add their own
Olvera Street flair, and Downtown is dominated by L.A. Live,
souvenir a vast sports and entertainment district.

It has been said that LA is not really a city, but a collection of 88
independent towns that overlap. Nowhere is this truer than within
the 5-mile (8-km) radius of Downtown. West of here, Koreatown
is home to the largest Korean population in the US, while east LA
has the largest group of Latinos living outside Latin America. In the
Latino-Byzantine quarter, surrounding St. Sophia Cathedral, Latinos
and Greeks predominate. Northeast is Dodger Stadium,

Pasadena may be considered part of LA, but it is, in fact, distinctly
apart. As the city’s first suburb, it attracted a large share of the
rich, who saw to it that a European flair enhanced the town. Fine
mansions, such as the Craftsman-era Gamble House, occupy
grounds on leafy streets. Old Town Pasadena, the historic core, is
now home to a vibrant street of restaurants and shops. Pasadena
is in the limelight every year on January 1 with its Tournament of

include the Rose Bowl and the fabled Huntington Gardens.
