2 Keep Wandering “Not all who wander are lost,” quotes noted author J. R. R. Tolkien, and it is a perfect saying for the boards of directors at our local colleges. Some of us wander to find things, some of us wander out of curiosity, or to eventually achieve a goal. Wandering without purpose, however, can only lead to a life aimlessly trying to figure out what you want to do. Board members know what we want to do when it comes to our colleges—be the best place in America to get an education. We are already the best place to work, live, and raise our families, but what about education? Do we still hold that old-fashion stigma from outside our boundaries of being an underachieving state when it comes to academic accomplishments? That thought occurred to me when I, along with TCDA Executive Director Adie Shimandle, President Dr. Jermaine Whirl from Augusta Tech and his board chair, Ms. Pat Goodwin, attended the Association of Community College Trustees Legislative Summit in February of this year. We chatted with college presidents and trustees from all across the county and engaged in numerous conversations about career pathways, innovations, and what’s next. At dinner one night, representatives from three states sat at our table. Each of them had their own brag stories to tell us and competed to outdo one another. We waited respectfully as we heard how many graduates they produced each year, how many programs they were launching, and where they thought the future was headed. Then we had our say. We told them about the more than 250,000 citizens who improve their lives and the lives of their families, by securing their futures at one of our 22 colleges. We boasted about unique programs we have that they did not, such as the Robotics program at Ogeechee Technical College, and the fact, we are an entire system of colleges, not just focused on the needs of a geographic community. We are setting our sights on the future, and it’s global. Then, we hit them with the big news—TCSG is the only two-year college system in the nation participating in reimaging all of education by being part of the National Science Foundation awarded consortium consisting of Ga. Tech, Harvard University, Ga. State, Vanderbilt, Boeing, IBM, and NC State, to create personalized virtual assistants for all learners. We’ve already launched three virtual assistant tutors at three of our colleges and the results are proving this is a winning strategy students are embracing. Before their faces dropped even further, we told them about our future plans; how TCSG has been conducting research into jobs of the future and bringing in the talented inventors, scientists, and entrepreneurs who have created disruptive technologies through our TECH Talks. After just coming from the leadership conference a few months before, I was still thinking about those smart socks that save patients from falling in hospitals and the brain computer interfaces restoring movement to those with a spinal cord injury. Moxie the robotic nursing assistant was another topic of discussion and we never shied away from talking about our GOAL and EAGLE students . We were a proud group representing TCDA. We visited seven congressional offices and had the pleasure of speaking directly with Congressmen Rick Allen, Buddy Carter, Andrew Clyde and David Scott. We filled them in on what ChatGPT was and how we are addressing this emerging technology. I think they were impressed with our knowledge and I know they were delighted to have us visit with them. I just can’t wait to visit with these folks again in February 2024 and give them a progress report. We will continue to bring all Georgians educational opportunities that are first in the nation, thereby proving that we are not lost—we are wandering with a purpose. 6 The Technical College Directors' Association of Georgia (TCDA) was formed in 1991 to invest in our communities through unifying our local board members with knowledge and up-to-date legislative and business information that will help inform their businesses while introducing innovative new programs at our colleges. This directory is a tribute and acknowledgement to these board members and the work and advice they provide our colleges to make the Technical College System of Georgia the premier two-year college system in the nation. Our drive is focused on building the capability of the technical colleges' boards of directors to effectively promote the value and potential of every Georgian who graduates from one of TCSG’s 22 colleges. The association is an arm of TCSG, providing professional certification programs for board members to support the technical colleges by having board members who are knowledgeable about their roles and responsibilities. The classes include: New Board Member Orientation; Building Relationships with Elected Officials; Budgeting; Governance of Technical Colleges; Community Advocacy; and a spectrum of elective workshops. Members are encouraged to complete the certification process making their local college board eligible for the 100% Award of Honor. Colleges who acquire this distinction are recognized at the TCDA/ TCSG Annual Leadership Conference. A full day of TECH Talks are presented at the conference to inform all participants about advances in technology and the new professions being created by the evolution of artificial intelligence. TCDA created the Leadership and Excellence in Attendance and Dedication (LEAD) recognition to acknowledge the college with the highest performing boards and foundation. The award is presented at the annual leadership conference. Competition is fierce amongst colleges to get their boards 100% certified, their foundations acknowledged as role model boards, and have as many of their board and foundation members attend the conference, along with their spouses. The scoring takes place the night before the awards with the coveted trophy presented at either the grand breakfast or the leadership banquet. TCDA is a member of the Association of Community College Trustees and takes part in the annual legislative summit in Washington D.C. This summit provides an opportunity for TCDA to speak directly with Georgia representatives to discuss advances in technology, funding to upskill our workforce and instructors, and familiarize them with subject matter they may not be aware of, such as ChatGPT. The 2022-2023 Directory is dedicated to the more than 240 board members who give their wisdom, work, and witness to guide and advise TCSG as we strive to be the best two-year college system in the nation. Technical College Directors’ Association, Inc.

7 LEAD Award Winner—Chattahoochee Tech Congratulations to Chattahoochee Tech for winning the Leadership and Excellence in Attendance and Dedication (LEAD) Award for the third year in a row. Competition was fierce at the 2022 Leadership Conference with West Georgia Tech coming in second and Savannah and Gwinnett Tech tied for third. Two levels of tie-beakers were employed to determine the winner — by one point. Three colleges have already declared a friendly “war” on Chattahoochee Tech with an aim to take that award at the 2023 Leadership Conference. Factors considered for the award include attendance of local board and foundation members at the conference, whether a local board is 100% board certified, being a role-model foundation, and distance traveled to the conference by foundation and board members. Tiebreakers include diversity of business on the board and whether a paying spouse or guest attended the conference. Members of Chattahoochee Tech local board of directors, staff, foundation trustees, along with TCSG Commissioner Greg Dozier.

ATC offers Technical Certificates of Credit, Diplomas, and Associate Degrees. The college's mission is to train individuals to meet dynamic workforce needs, promote economic and community growth through the delivery of quality credit instruction, adult education, and customized training using traditional and distance education formats. The College was established in 1961 as Monroe Area Vocational Technical School with 175 students. Today, nearly 2,500 students are enrolled in credit programs each semester, including more than 550 high school dual-enrolled students. Additionally, nearly 800 individuals have received training in Continuing Education and customized business courses. In 2021-2022, Albany Tech continued to withstand the effects of the pandemic as it began its 60th Anniversary Year celebrations. Some highlights include special campus dedications for longtime Board members Robert Chester and Lemuel Griffin, who both passed away in late 2020; Installation of two state-of-the -art virtual learning labs; Ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the Carlton Construction Academy Phase II, Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Tech, and the Nursing and Radiological Technology Lab. Also launched was the college’s Mobile STEM lab, the Dual Achievement Program (DAP), and the Career Plus HSE program. Some of the new academic program initiated are Sustainable Renewable and Alternative Energy; Addiction and Substance Abuse Counseling, Accelerated Nurse Aide, Video and Film Editor, Mobile App Developer, and iOS Mobile Programming. On June 6, 2022, Albany Tech suffered the untimely death of the long-standing, President, Dr. Anthony O. Parker. Dr. Parker was a giant of a leader and served as President of ATC from 1995 to 2022, which qualified him as the longest serving President within the Technical College System of Georgia. On August 4, 2022, the TCSG Board of Directors approved the naming of ATC’s newly constructed transportation facility in honor of Dr. Anthony O. Parker, which is projected to be completed in late spring 2024. Dr. Emmett Griswold President Natasha Price Executive Assistant Michele Lilly - Williams Executive Director Institutional Advancement

50 North Georgia Technical College is the first technical college established in Georgia and is proud of its community-rich heritage. Keeping in lock-step with the economic development of the area, the college has evolved through the years. The Clarkesville campus was originally the home of the Georgia Ninth District School of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts founded in 1907, changing to Habersham College from 1938 to 1943, progressing to North Georgia Trade and Vocational School in 1944, and arriving at its current fully-credentialed status as North Georgia Technical College in 2000. Today, North Georgia Technical College offers programs to develop skills that can be immediately applied in the workplace as well as many general core courses that can be transferred to four-year colleges and universities across Georgia. Leadership at the college has implemented more flexible schedules and additional course offerings, more adjunct faculty into daily operations, a retention plan to keep students enrolled and on track to graduate, additional dual enrollment programs at area high schools, and a student mentor program with resident students. North Georgia Technical College is one of two Georgia technical colleges that offers students on-campus housing. Here at this hometown college, students become involved in campus life and develop the leadership and soft skills so desired by business and industry. Whether entering college directly from high school, returning to college to finish a degree, preparing for a career change, or laying the foundation for advanced degrees, a student will find support from dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to student success. North Georgia Technical College is truly the best place for living and learning in the mountains.
