EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S NOTE
QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE
ANNURAG BATRA Covid cases are on the decline and educational institutions have reopened
physical classes, but the discourse over the benefits — and drawbacks— of
[email protected] online education will continue. The lessons imbibed during the Covid will
continue to be put to use in teaching-learning experience, even by academics
who were earlier averse to technology. In this issue of BW Education, leaders
in the field of education put the spotlight on these learnings.
IIM-Bangalore Director Rishikesha T Krishnan discusses how the
pandemic and lockdown amplified the need for new skills and re-skilling
among faculty, managing risks during crisis time and greater collaboration
between educational institutes. Similarly, IIM-Shillong Director Dharam
Paul Goyal emphasises that it is essential to have a backup online learning
system for future. Experts in the ed-tech field, featured in the columns and
interviews in this issue, provide their experiences, and data, to show how end
users, including students, teachers and even working professionals, used online
tools for seamless education, skill upgradation, and courses in empathy and
mindfulness.
Transcending Covid crisis, the quest of several education providers for
excellence has led to their making it to the top of the echelon time and again.
In the B-School Rankings in this issue, we find that the top league institutes
(especially IIM-A, B and C) continue to deliver on quality, but several new-age
institutes, including private B-schools, are vying to climb up. In this issue,
we also bring to you the top ‘40 under 40’ innovators, change-makers and
disruptors, who are making a positive dent in the society. We also feature the
‘Most Influential Women’, who are working for education and empowerment
of all.
One educator who has worked tirelessly for 25 years in the educational quest
is JC Chaudhry, founder of Aakash Educational Services, who can take pride in
having placed thousands of aspirants in their choice college. Speaking to BW
Education, he shares how he started out and the course he has charted, what
are his thoughts on education and what is needed to succeed. Speaking from the
hindsight of a successful edu-preneurial journey, he is in ideal position to talk
about the importance of intrapersonal skills, and the need for keeping oneself
motivated in the face of low phases. Read our Cover Interview in this issue.
Also enriching the issue are our insights on Budget-2022, and how it will help
fuel the plans envisaged in the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020; and a
take on why Indian educational institutes continue to figure low in the global
rankings, and the panacea for this situation.

Through our engagement with young learners across
the country however, we saw how self-learning enabled by
technology can become a key component to meaningful,
empowered future for young people from resource-poor
backgrounds. Once learning was unlocked within the
home and community spaces, and supported through a
nurturing environment, children were eager to engage
in the learning process. In fact, a report by the Depart-

students had picked up new skills such as reading and
writing for leisure, gardening, singing, and dancing – all
during the pandemic. The survey also found that many
of the students learnt vital life lessons, although they had

“A Step In The

Great Impact”
When it comes to the scenario of the Indian healthcare, it showcases
a bandwidth of contrasting scenes. At one end, the high-tech medi-
care is making a difference, while on another end, the rural areas are
deprived of basic healthcare and knowledge. Implementing rede-
fined policy with a set of proper strategies is the need of the hour that
will work as a ray of hope in rural healthcare plans. In an exclusive
