2 Reading
Ma Liang
[The story, “Ma Liang,” based on Chinese folklore, enacts the childhood fantasy of a poor girl who
overcomes the difficulties in life through her skill in drawing. Besides being an inspirational story,
the repetitive structures that the tale abounds in allow language learners to concentrate on certain
useful expressions.]
Ma Liang is a Chinese girl
and she loves drawing
but she is very poor and
she hasn’t got a brush. Ma
Liang draws her pictures
on the ground. She draws
with a stick.
One day she closes her

eyes and she says three times, ‘I want a brush! I want a brush! I want
a brush!’
Ma Liang opens her eyes and there, in front of her, is an old man. He
has got a long beard and he is holding a brush.
The old man says, ‘This
brush is for you!’
‘For me?’
‘Yes, it’s for you. Take it! It’s
yours!’
‘It’s mine?’
‘Yes, it’s yours! It’s for you!’
Ma Liang takes the brush
and she looks at it. It is a
beautiful brush. She wants to say ‘Thank you’.
But the old man isn’t there! Ma Liang looks in front of her; he isn’t
there. She looks to the right; he isn’t there. She looks to the left; he
isn’t there. She looks behind her; he isn’t there.
Ma Liang finds a piece of paper. ‘What can I draw?’
Then she sees a rooster so she draws a rooster.
Suddenly, the picture begins to move. The rooster is standing up on
the paper! It is a real rooster! Then it jumps off the paper and it runs
away!
‘Wonderful! It’s a magic brush!’
‘What can I draw now? I know, a hen!’
‘Here’s its red hat and here’s its head. Here’s its bright eye. Here’s its
fat neck and fat body. Here are its legs and its feet.’

Suddenly, the picture begins to move. The hen is standing up on the

Ma Liang picks up the hen and goes to a little house. The woman in
the house is very poor. She hasn’t got any hen. Ma Liang says, ‘This
hen is for you.’
‘For me?’
‘Yes, it’s for you. Take it. It’s yours.’
‘It’s mine?’
‘Yes, it’s yours. It’s for you.’
The hen lays an egg. The poor old woman is very happy!
Then Ma Liang sees an old man. He is trying to cut some sticks. But
his axe is very old. Ma Liang draws an axe: a new, shiny, sharp axe.
Suddenly, the axe begins to move. There it is, on the paper! Ma Liang
gives the axe to the old man.
‘This axe is for you.’
‘For me?’
‘Yes, it’s for you. Take it. It’s yours.’
‘It’s mine?’
‘Yes, it’s yours. It’s for you.’
The old man cuts the sticks. He is very happy.
Then Ma Liang sees a farmer. He is trying to pull a plough in his
field.
Ma Liang draws an ox: a big, strong ox.
Suddenly, the ox begins to move. It stands up on the paper and then
it jumps on to the ground and it begins to grow, bigger and bigger
and bigger. Ma Liang takes the ox to the farmer.

Everybody in the village knows Ma Liang. She draws things for all

One day two soldiers come to the village. ‘Where is Ma Liang?’
The people in the village say, ‘She’s
there! That’s Ma Liang! She is our
wonderful girl!’
‘Are you Ma Liang?’ asked the soldiers.
‘Yes.’
‘The king wants you. Come with us.’
‘Why?’
‘The king wants a picture.’
‘No, I won’t come! I won’t draw
a picture for the king! He has got
a palace, and soldiers, farms and

‘Put her in prison!’
Ma Liang is in prison. What can she do?
Ma Liang draws a key, a big key for the door of the prison. She puts
the key in the lock. She turns the key. She opens the door. She looks
into the corridor. She sees some soldiers. She walks slowly and quietly
down the corridor. Suddenly, the soldiers see her! ‘Hey! You! Stop!
Come back!’ ‘Hey! You! Stop! Come back!’
Ma Liang begins to run. The soldiers begin to run. What can she do?
Ma Liang draws a horse! She jumps on the horse and the horse begins
to run. The soldiers and the king jump on their horses and they begin
to run!
Ma Liang’s horse is very fast. But the king and the soldiers get nearer
and nearer and nearer.
What can Ma Liang do?
Ma Liang draws a hole! She throws the hole on the ground behind
her. The hole grows bigger and bigger and bigger. The king and all
the soldiers and their horses run into the hole!

very happy! They love Ma Liang.

The Foolish Rabbit
[The following fable has a neat moral: that one should not run after rumour
without checking the facts. Since a fable often repeats similar sentence
structures, we can use those structures to teach language skills through
frequent reinforcement.]
In the jungle, long ago, a rabbit lay asleep. He
was having a bad dream.
Suddenly, he woke up and said to himself,
"What would happen to me if all the world
were to fall to pieces?"
And as he sat scratching his head, a monkey
in the tree above him suddenly dropped a
coconut. It thudded on the ground behind the
rabbit. The rabbit jumped when he heard the
sudden noise and cried out, "Oh, the world is
breaking up!" And he jumped up and ran as
fast as his legs would carry him.
He ran past another rabbit
who called after him, "Why
are you running so fast?"
"Haven't you heard?" said
the first rabbit. "The world
is falling to pieces!" So, the
second rabbit ran beside him.
Then they met another, and another. Soon there were hundreds of
rabbits running as fast as their legs would carry them.
224 New Nepal English Reader-3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
They passed by a deer, and called out to tell him that the world was
falling to pieces. So, the deer ran after them.
Then the deer saw the fox, and told him to run with them. Even an
elephant joined them and together the animals ran on through the
jungle.
After a while, they passed the
lion. He heard them calling out
that the world was falling to
pieces, but he didn’t believe them
for a minute. He ran ahead of
the animals to the foot of a hill,
where he stopped and roared
three times.
‘All the animals stopped running
when they heard this, because
the lion is the king of the jungle.
‘Why are you running so fast?’ asked the lion.
‘Because the world is falling to pieces!’cried all the animals. ‘And have
you all seen it happening?’
asked the lion.
‘Well, the fox told me,’ said
the elephant.
‘And the deer told me,’ said
the fox.
‘One of the rabbits told me,’
said the deer.
‘After a while, the lion found
out which rabbit had first said
Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur New Nepal English Reader-3 225
that the world was falling apart. 'How do you know that this is true?’
the lion asked the first rabbit.
‘I heard it!’ cried the little rabbit. ‘I heard the noise as it began to fall
apart! That's when I started to run.’
‘Very well,’ said the lion. ‘Show me where you heard this terrible
noise.’
‘So the rabbit jumped up on to the lion's back and away they ran
back to the tree where the rabbit had been sleeping.
The lion looked at the ground under the tree and saw the coconut
lying there. ‘This coconut must have fallen out of the tree while you
were sleeping. That's the noise you heard, you silly rabbit!’
‘Oh, you are very wise,’ said the rabbit.
So the king of the jungle went back to the foot of the hill to tell the
animals that the world was not falling apart after all.
So if the noble and wise lion had not stopped them, those poor
creatures might still be running about today!
