Elidor

[Adapted from a twelfth–century Wales story, the following lesson enacts
childhood fantasy of escape. It also shows how, even in the fantasy world,
one must abide by rules and bear morality.]

Once upon a time there was a boy in Wales, called Elidor. He didn’t
like school and he didn’t work very hard. When he learnt one thing,
he forgot another. The teacher was often angry and scolded him but
he learnt nothing.

One day Elidor was so unhappy that he ran away! Elidor ran down
to the river. He knew the river very well. He knew all the best places
to hide. Elidor hid by the bank of the river. Nobody could find him
there.

He thought, ‘I’ll stay here until teatime. They will look for me. They
will be very worried and they will be sorry, really sorry, because they

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur New Nepal English Reader-3 109

were so unkind to me.’ The
evening came and it began
to grow dark. Elidor stayed
by the bank above the river.

‘I won’t go home tonight.
I’ll stay here all night. They
will be really worried.’

Elidor stayed all night and all the next day. Then he decided to stay
the next night as well and all the next day! He stayed there for two
days and nights. During the third evening, two little men came to
him. They were very small, only the height of Elidor's knee!

‘What are you doing here?’ they asked him.

Elidor told them how unhappy he was because the teachers scolded
him.

‘Oh, in our land children are always happy and nobody scolds them.
Why don’t you come with us?’

So Elidor agreed to go with them. The two little men walked along
the bank of the river until they came to a large hole. They walked
into the hole and Elidor followed them; he crawled on his hands and
knees. Elidor crawled for a long way. At last he saw some light ahead
of him and then he came out into a new land of fields and trees and
hills.

There were corn-fields and farmers
were cutting the corn. The farmers were
the same size as the two little men who
were with Elidor. The farmers’ horses
were as big as dogs. The two little men
took Elidor to the king's palace. The

110 New Nepal English Reader-3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

king was very kind, ‘Of course, you can stay in my land. And you
can play with my son, the prince.’

Elidor played with the prince; they played with a golden ball.

At last Elidor wanted to go home to see his mother. ‘Of course you
can go, Elidor!’ said the king, ‘You can come and go as you wish.’

So Elidor went across the fields and through the hole, to the river
and then home to his mother. She was very pleased to see him.

After some time, Elidor went
back again to the land of the
small people to play with the
prince. He often went to the land
of the little people.

Elidor told his mother about that
world and all the gold that was
there.

‘Oh, Elidor, you know we are
very poor. Bring some gold back with you next time.’ Elidor didn’t
want to take any gold from the little people but he wanted to help his
mother.

The next time he played with
the prince he took the golden
ball and ran across the fields.
The two little men ran after
him, ‘Elidor, come back. Come
back! Don’t take the golden
ball!’

Elidor ran across the fields, through the hole, to the river and back
home. The two little men ran after him. Elidor opened his mother's

Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur New Nepal English Reader-3 111

door and he fell into the kitchen. He dropped the ball and the two
little men shouted ‘Elidor!’. They took the ball and then ran away
and down to the river.

Elidor ran after them but
he could not catch them.
He went to the river but
he could not find the hole!
He looked and he looked
for hours but he could not
find it anywhere.

Elidor came the next day
and the next but he could not find the hole. He never found it again.

Many years later, when Elidor was an old man, people sometimes
asked him about the land of the little people. Tears came to his eyes
when he remembered what he had done and what he had lost.

Water Is a Lovely Thing

[This poem is about the colours and lovely sights that water offers us. Since
water in itself is colourless, it can take the colour of the object that contains it.]

Water is a lovely thing.
Dark and ripply in a spring,
Black and quiet in a pool,
In a puddle brown and cool;

In a river blue and gay,
In a raindrop silver gray,
In a fountain flashing white,
In a dewdrop crystal bright.

In a pitcher frosty cold,
In a bubble pink and gold,
In a happy summer sea,
Just as green as green can be,

In a rainbow, far unfurled,
Every colour in the world,
All the year from spring to spring,
Water is the loveliest thing.

Puss and Peter

[As in most fairy tales, there is a talking and thinking animal in the story.
With its intelligence, the animal helps its master overcome the heavy odds in
life. While such stories embody the themes of courage, luck, and intelligence,
they also employ varied language structures to use for language learning.]

Once upon a time, an old man lived in a little house in the country
with his three sons. They were very poor. They had only one cow,
one horse and a small black cat.

One day the old man said to his sons, ‘I am dying.’ He gave the house
to his first son, he gave the horse and the cow to his second son and
he gave the cat to his youngest son. Then he closed his eyes and died.

‘Let’s work together,’ said the oldest son to the second son. They said
to their younger brother, ‘We don’t need you! You aren’t old enough,
and you aren’t strong enough. Go away - and take your cat with you!’

The young man’s name was Peter. He said to the cat, ‘Come on, Puss!

‘OK,’ said the cat. ‘But it’s a long way to London. Please, may I have
some boots?’

‘Puss, you can take!’ said Peter.

‘Of course,’ said the cat. ‘I’m a very special cat. Now let’s buy those
boots.’ And they walked down the road together.

Well, cats do not usually wear boots, and Peter did not have much
money, but they went together to a shoe shop and Peter bought a
pair of beautiful red boots for his cat. Puss put his new boots on. He
looked wonderful.

They walked and walked. One evening, they saw a sign.

‘I can’t read', said Puss. ‘What does the sign say?’

‘It says LONDON 5 KILOMETRES,’ said Peter. ‘We’re very near to
London now.’ In the morning, Puss got up very early and caught two

fat young rabbits. He took
them to the King’s palace
and knocked on the door. A
servant opened the door.

‘Good morning,’ said Puss.
‘I am Prince Peter’s servant.
He sent these rabbits for the
King.’

‘Thank you,’ said the
servant. He took the rabbits and closed the door.

The servant took the rabbits to the King. ‘A present from Prince Peter,’
he said.

‘That’s wonderful,’ said the King, ‘Take them to the kitchen, please.
Who is Prince Peter?’

‘I don’t know,’ said the servant.

The next morning, Puss got up early again. He caught two fat little
birds and took them to the palace. Again, he knocked at the door,
and gave them to the servant. And again, the King was very pleased.
But who was Prince Peter? The King wanted to know.

The next day, Peter and Puss came to a river. Peter took off his old,
dirty clothes and jumped into the cold, clean water. He swam happily
for a long time and he washed his hair and cleaned his fingernails.

Then the King’s beautiful coach came down the road. Puss saw it.
Carefully he put Peter’s old, dirty clothes in some long grass.

‘Stay in the water for a moment,’ said Puss. Then he ran to the coach
and shouted to the driver.

‘Can anybody help me, please? The Prince is drowning!’ Peter heard
him. He said, ‘Puss, don’t be silly! I’m not drowning, and I’m not a
Prince!’

‘Be quiet,’ said Puss.

The driver helped
Peter out of the water.
‘Don’t look,’ said
Puss. ‘The Prince
hasn’t any clothes.’

The King gave Peter

some beautiful

clothes. ‘You are cold

and tired,’ he said.

‘Climb into my coach

and come home with

me.’ He looked at

Puss. ‘You can come too, little cat,’ he said. 'Climb into my coach and

come home with me.'
