A Visit to Kumari Ghar
[This lesson introduces students to one of the important cultural heritage sites
of Kathmandu Valley. Ask students if they know about a real person being
worshipped as a God or Goddess for an effective way to begin the lesson.]
Have you ever visited the shrine of
a goddess near your hometown or
village? You must have. Saraswoti,
Kalika, Durga, etc. are some
goddesses worshipped in Nepal.
Their temples are called Devisthan
- the place for Devi. Inside the
temples, you can see the idols of
the goddesses. Kumari, however, is
a living goddess of Nepal. She is a
real living person. Both the Hindus and Buddhists worship her.
The living goddess - Kumari - is quite a young girl. But she is a special person.
She is chosen from a Shakya family of Kathmandu. She may be between four
to twelve years of age. When it is time to change the sitting Kumari, a new
Kumari is selected to live in the Kumari Ghar.
Kumari Ghar is in the centre of Kathmandu. You can see Kumari - the
living goddess - in the Kumari Ghar.
It is a famous building in the
Durbar Square of Kathmandu.
There is a wrought wooden
door to lead into the Kumari
Ghar. There are many carved
windows, pillars and frames in
the Kumari Ghar. Visitors can
enter the courtyard and wait
for the Kumari to appear on the
windows. Everyday hundreds of
156 New Nepal English Reader-3 Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
visitors from Nepal and other countries
come to the Kumari Ghar to see the living
goddess.
During the Indrajatra festival, goddess
Kumari visits other temples in the
Hanuman Dhoka area. She is carried in a
special chariot. A large number of people
visit Hanuman Dhoka at this time.
When the Kumari enters into her puberty, a new Kumari is chosen to
replace her.

Oranges Everywhere
Bentley was walking slowly Approved by the Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
through the trees. The air
smelled of oranges all around
him. The weather was perfect,
and the oranges were growing
bigger by the day. He liked to
walk through the groves, and
loved the smell of the oranges,
but he didn’t like that he and
his family ate oranges all the

time. Sometimes, he wanted to avoid them for weeks at a time.
He wished his family could grow other things, like corn, or the apples
which are his favourite. His mouth watered just thinking about his
favorite apples. Yes, those apples would be better than oranges all
the time.
“Mum, why do we have to have oranges almost every day?” Bentley
asked.
“Well, since we grow them, there are plenty around,” his mum
replied.
“Does every kid eat as many oranges as we do?” he asked.
“No. There are parts of the country and parts of the world that don’t
have the type of weather to grow oranges. We’re actually very lucky!”
“So some kids don’t eat oranges at all?”
“We send oranges all over the world, so that if people can’t grow
their own oranges, they can still buy and eat them,” said the mum.

“Hmmm… so people move foods all over the world? Are there foods
that I like that don’t grow here? ”
“Apples do not grow well here, so they have to be sent from where
they grow well,” replied mum.
“I never knew!” said Bentley. “What else moves around like food?”
“Plenty of things! The factories that make your favorite toys are not
all in our little town here. The companies make the toys and then
send the toys to other places. So foods move from where they can be
grown to places where they can’t be grown. People move themselves,
too. May be they’re looking for a specific job that isn’t around where
they live, or they want to be closer to their families.”
“Wow! I never thought about where all of our food and toys come
from, or about people moving far away. It’s very interesting,” Bentley
said.
“It sure is. I’m glad you asked. I’m sorry you get tired of eating
oranges all the time,
but I hope now you
understand why we
do.”
“Yes, but I still might
take a break from
them every once in
a while. May be I’ll
try to grow my own
apples!” Bentley
replied.
Mum laughed and
said, “Sure, honey. Now let’s go to make dinner.”

3 Practising grammar a/an/the
We use a/an to talk about one particular person or thing when the
listener or reader does not know which one is meant or when it does
not matter which one.
We use ‘an’ in front of vowel sounds.
Rohan is an artist.
Reena’s father is an author.
We use a in front of consonant sounds.
There is a visitor for you.
Tshering is a dancer.
But we use ‘a’ in front of ewe because in ewe ‘e’
sounds like a consonant. And we say an hour because the ‘h’ in hour
is silent.
He arrived an hour later.
We use ‘the’ to refer to somebody or something that has already
been mentioned or is easily understood by the listener or reader.
There were three questions. The first two were easy but the third
one was hard.
We also use 'the' when there is only one of
something.
Mount Everest is the tallest peak in the
world.
The sun rises in the east.
