TESTIMONIALS FOR .JOHN SLAKE'S PATENT SELF•ACTING HYDRAULIC RAMS.

From T. FERNYHOUGH, Esq., Agent to the Right Hon. LORD HINDLIP, Bradley, Ashbourne, Derby, March 17th, 1894.

"Dear Sir,-Referring to the two Patent 'B' Rams you started six months ago, for the Right Hon. LORD HINDLrP, on the Alsop-
en-le-Dale Estate, I am glad to congratulate you on the success of your attempt to raise the necessary supply of water under conditions
1!0 difficult, the height to raise the water being more than 63 times that of the working fall. The Rams are worked by water
from the River Dove with the small working fall of 8 feet 3 inches, and issuing from the rocky bank close by is a copious
stream of pure spring water, 8,000 gallons per day of which the Rams force to a reservoir three-quarters of a mile distant, and at the
extraordinary height of 632~ feet above the Rams. The water is then gravitated from the reservoir to the several farms and houses
on the estate, giving an ample supply to each, and still leaving a good overflow at the reservoir.

"I am glad to add that the Rams lift more water than you promised, and seem to work with great ease and smoothness, notwith-

standing the great elevation they force to. Yours faithfully, T. FERNYHOUGH."

From the Right Honourable the EARL OF HARROWBY, 44, Grosvenor Square, London, February 21st, 1893.
"Sir,-I have pleasure in stating that the two Hydraulic Rams, which you supplied and fixed for me last Autumn, at Sandon, have
pt"O'Ved so far most successful, and that the work gives every promise of durability, while the economy, compared with the former much
smaller and intermittent supply by steam pump, will be considerable, With a fall of about 14 ft. from a previously existing mill pool,
the rams supply reservoirs 168 ft. above the brook whence the water is forced, through pipes of one mile and a half in length. They sent

ap, as long as I required it, about 41,000 gallons per day. I now generally work the two rams alternately (for a fortnight or so
each), but can at any time work the two together, if the full supply of 41,000 gallons should be needed. The business of this somewhat
complicated water-supply was conducted by you with singular promptness and punctuality; and no local difficulties arose in the execution
of the work, owing to the excellent and efficient men whom you sent trom your works at Accrington.

I am, Sir, your very obedient Servant, HARROWBY."

From T. DYNE STEEL, Esq., M.Inst.C.E., Past President South Wales Inst. of Engineers, Bank Chambers, Newport, Mon. April 24th, 1891.

U S : H : ~.A.TER~OR:H:S.
"Dear Sir,-In September of laRt year I applied to you for a Hydraulic Ram for the purposes of the Usk Waterworks, to be capable

of raising 27,000 gallons per day a height of 127 feet, with a working fall of driving water of 27 feet, and on your guaranteeing that

performance I gave you an order for the Ram. The machine you supplied has now been put to work, and I have much satisfaction

in saying that it far and away exceeds in its performance my most sanguine expectations, and possibly yours also. I have just

completed a series of exhaustive tests with the following results. Working fall of driving water, 30 feet; vertical height raised, 127
feet; length of rising main, 850 feet, from Ram to outflow; length of supply pipe, 200 feet; gallons per hour raised, 1,612 ; driving
water used per hour, 8,186 gallons, showing the remarkable and gratifying result of 83 per cent. o:f efficiency. The tests were.
carefully made and repeated, the lll[ater measured, and levels properly taken. Several trials were made, and I shall be glad to give any

Engineer interested in the subject, facilitieq for repeating the tests at the spot. I may here state that for the rising main I used a

large diameter of pipe in order to reduce friction, with excellent effect. Yours faithfully, T. DYNE STEEL."

' J

I Guide to the Export, BBING

&: Manufacturing Industries of the Country,

Wl1'B WHICH IS AliiALGAIUTED

STREET'S INDIAN & COLONIAL MERCANTILE DIRECTORY.

PRICE, 30/-

This Work contains lists of the

IMPORTERS, EXPORTERS, MERCHANTS &: MANUFACTURERS OF GREAT BRITAIN &: IRELAND,
AND THE PRINCIPAL TRADING CENTRES OF THE WORLD.

'J'HE PBOt!JPEBJ'J.'J! OF ENGLAND depends so greatly on the amount of the Export trade,

that all information tend:ng to increase the knowledge necessary to J:romote this object is of especial

interest to the Manufacturers and Shippers of Great Britain, and no efforts are spared to obtain the
latest and fullest information, and the utmost degree of accuracy, for this Directory.

'J'HA 'I' 'I'HEBE IS A ft'AN'I' for such a publication is proved by the issue of a crowd of •
English Books of more or less perfect information, and by the conspicuous success of an analogous
French publication.

AS 'I'HE BESTJLT OF AN APPLICATION to H.M. Foreign Office for assistance from

British Consuls abroad in the compilation, the publishers were honored by a letter, of which the

following is an extract : -

"As, however, your Foreign Directory appears to be a work of considerable value to British Trade, LORD

IDDESLEIGH would be glad that her Majesty's Consuls should assist, as far as possible, in making it complete, and

he will not object to their giving, on your application, such information of the nature specified as they may think

advisable."

THE PVBLISHEBS have consequently received the greatest amount of help from the various
Consuls, and a copy of the work was, and will continue to be, sent to every British Consulate throughout
the world. Many and flattering letters have been received from Consuls stating and pointing out how

great must be the benefit to British Trade, and how much the work was referred to for information.

The Directory is divided into 2 Sections, Foreign and Home.

'I.'HE FIBS'I' DIYISI:ON embraces the British Colonies and Possessions throughout the World,

and the various Foreign Countries and their Colonies to which British Manufactures are exported,

Iarranged under the following Heads :- I ASIA.
INDIAN AND COLONIAL EUROPEAN.
POSSESSIONS. AMERICA, NoRTH & SOUTH. AFRICA.

'J'HE SECOND D:IYJSION embraces the names and addresses of the actual Manufacturers in the
United Kingdom of the articles exported, classified in the usual way, describing as clearly as possible the
specialities of each Manufacturer. Lists are also given of the Merchants and Shippers who export
British Goods. Manufacturers who have either depots abroad or Consignees, and who ship only their
own goods, are indicated by a special mark. The object of the list is to show the Manufacturer who are
the purchasers of his special class of goods for shipment.

This part of the Work is of great value to Buyers abroad, and also to the Merchant in this

Country, by putting them in communication with the actual Manufacturers of such goods as are
required abroad; while to Manufacturers it will be valuable, as showing them the Merchants and
Shippers to the various Countries with which they may desire to do business.
