CELEBRATIONS PHSG 1902 - 2022 The Iris 5

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK LETTER FROM THE HEAD 2022 was a very interesting year! We approached the year with excitement as we launched our theme of Unlock to Unlimit. This left the door wide open for so many new experiences and opportunities. – I say “new” but should probably replace that with “Renewed” as we approached the year in anticipation of once again having the possibility of our normal, or as close to normal, school calendar. It was with great caution and anticipation that we planned our year to be one which reflected our wide variety of activities getting back into full swing. The school lived up to the theme as we saw so many great achievements from our learners and staff. These were all boasted about in our various issues of our new-look, interactive Snippets, as well as on our social media pages. I would like to thank Mrs du Toit, Mrs Oertel and their team of journalists, photographers, and videographers for the role they have played in showcasing the achievements and events of PHSG throughout the year. The resignation of Mrs Phuti Mogale, to move to a school closer to home, came as a shock in February 2022. Once again we found ourselves in a position where we needed to unlock something new! We were very pleased to be able to appoint Mrs de Bruin in the position of Deputy Principal Extra Curricular and Student Leadership from 1 July. Mrs de Bruin took up her position with enthusiasm and determination and her impact was felt immediately. Every year has its challenges with regards to staffing. We need to deal with illnesses, staff going on maternity leave and staff moving to other opportunities. In any appointment of substitutes or replacements, it is always at the forefront of our decision-making that we need to ensure that we have the best people possible to teach your children and to prepare them for the future. We were blessed with exceptionally highquality applications from educators from various schools and different provinces. PHSG is certainly a sought-after school to join as a staff member! We welcome all new staff who joined us in 2022 and thank them for their contributions to the school in all spheres. I must commend the student leaders of PHSG for 2022 for the dedicated and collaborative role they have played. The teamwork between our two main leadership bodies, the prefects and the RCL was amazing. Their insights, open communication and dedication to the school have led to some innovative and significant changes in approaches at the school. I thank them for their dedication to the school and the journey it is on. Their pride in and commitment to the school were exceptional. If anyone were to ask me what the biggest challenge for 2022 has been, I would have no hesitation in saying that it is the impact of social media on our community. We had to deal with a variety of situations where the irresponsible use of social media has had a significant impact. This ranged from matters which resulted in serious disciplinary cases taken before the SGB Disciplinary Committee, through internal disciplinary matters, to serious impacts on personal relationships, reputational damage to individuals and the school and the most concerning of all, the impact of irresponsible use of social media on the mental health of learners and staff. We have embarked on a campaign to make the impacts of irresponsible social media use the focus of our attention. The need to raise awareness of these situations is stronger than ever. I appeal to parents to partner with us as we aim to educate your daughters on the dangers of this Silent Tragedy. We must continue to underpin all that we do with the five core values of the school: Respect, Kindness, Integrity, Resilience and Servant Leadership. As long as we continue to unlock these values in everything we do, we will slowly but surely achieve an environment of unlimited acceptance and consideration for those around us and in the online world. Pretoria High School for Girls remains the school of choice for many parents. This is reflected in the approximately 1300 applications for Grade 8 placement in 2023. The reason for this is the high standard of education provided in all spheres – academic, sport, cultural, our environment and ultimately life. The credit for these achievements goes to the ladies and gentlemen of the staff - not only academic, but also the support staff without whom we could not have the environment of teaching and learning we do. The support of parent groups such as the PA, the BPA and the SGB has a significant impact on the functioning of the school. We are grateful for the contributions and time devoted to the school by the members of these committees. My gratitude is extended to not only the parents on these committees but all parents who support the school and their daughters in whatever way possible. The parents are such a valuable part of the PHSG community and without all three pillars of this community – learners, parents and staff, we would not be able to function at the level we do. The first week of term 3 was a very special week in the history of PHSG as we celebrated our 120th birthday. What a privilege it is for me to be the principal of this school at this time. The corridors and grounds of the school rang with voices of love and admiration by learners past and present, for what PHSG means to them. Happy 120th birthday to us all. In closing, I salute the matric class of 2022 for their exceptional results. We are extremely proud of these learners for what they achieved amidst a challenging three years in the FET phase. Not only did they achieve a 99,3 % pass rate but also a 89,6 % Bachelor’s Degree pass. A special congratulations to Emily Hawkes, our top achiever and dux scholar on achieving joint first place in Gauteng. As a cohort, the 271 matrics of 2022 achieved 422 distinctions while 115 of them achieved an average of 70% or more. Across the board our subjects’ achieved averages were extremely competitive with 54% of the subjects achieving above 70% averages. Congratulations to the Grade 12 learners of 2022, the staff, and their parents on these outstanding results! Our mission remains: To produce educated, adaptable and independent young women who are equipped to take up the challenges offered in the global community and who have social responsibility and respect for all. SOCIAL MEDIA Over the course of the school year, various activities were showcased on social media to give students, parents, and the wider community a glimpse into the exciting events and initiatives taking place at our school. From sports tournaments and academic competitions to cultural events and community service projects, we have shared a diverse range of content with our followers online. One of the most popular ways that we have showcased our activities on social media is through photo and video updates. As the year progressed, different school departments and student groups began sharing highlights from their various activities and projects, featuring some behind-the-scenes moments from our events. For example, the music department shared clips of their concerts and performances, the sports teams shared photos and videos from their games and practices, and the clubs and societies gave us a glimpse of what happens at their gatherings. Social media was also used to celebrate individual student achievements, such as students who won academic or athletic awards, as well as to showcase the work of students who participated in various academic competitions or extracurricular activities. Overall, the use of social media proved to be an effective way to keep the school community informed and engaged throughout the year. It allowed us to share our achievements, foster school spirit, and promote our school to the wider community. STAFF STAFF NEWS 2022 was a welcome return to normality. Our school year was full of the activities we love and have missed. It was a learning curve for some of us, both staff and learners, as we had to relearn how to do things, perhaps for the first time since joining the school. The Inter-house activities and many extra-murals really took off, with enthusiastic participation and gratitude for the opportunities offered at the school. We have maintained protocols that work for us so the school day still has one break and the Assemblies and Long Forms are part of our time-table, making class time more stable and predictable. This was important because we no longer have a school bell, or rather welcome M Kruger M Matlabane M Moeketsi M Ncube N Aiyer P de Ruiter P Makhubela R Erasmus R Slotow S Etsebeth “siren” as it was fondly referred to. Learners have been very adept at keeping track of time and will politely remind the teachers to wrap things up so that they can get to their next class. It means the school day is somewhat quieter, and everyone is more responsible. Our staff are modelling lifelong learning by making sure that they are constantly developing as professionals. The staff attended workshops on boundaries, habits, critical thinking as well as our ongoing appraisals and evaluations. Mrs Bredenkamp and Mrs Barratt both achieved umpire grading in netball and Mrs Hawker played for the Northern Blues team in two interprovincial hockey tournaments. A number of our staff qualified as First Aiders. Mrs van Heerden, as Robotics Organiser, was awarded the prize for Coach/ Mentor of the Year at the First Lego League Regional competition. Various staff members moved into new positions, taking on new responsibilities. Mrs de Bruin was appointed Deputy-Principal of Extra-murals and Student Leadership. Mrs Hohls was officially appointed as HOD Visual and Performing Arts. Mrs Olivier became Head of Afrikaans and Ms Jelley the Head of the English Department and Acting HOD Languages. Mr Mashishi was appointed Estate Supervisor. The organisation of Choir fell to Mrs Maré, Chess was run by Mr Snyman and Drama by Mrs Carstens. Ms Jooste joined Boarding as a North Lodge Housemistress. We welcomed teaching and support staff into the Girls’ High family and we are so grateful for all that they have brought to our community. We also said to goodbye to staff, especially Mrs Greenberg and Mrs van Heerden who both retired in 2022. Mrs Greenberg was legendary to years of art girls who enjoyed her passion and enthusiasm for all forms of art. Through her tutelage, PHSG participated in the Cool Capital initiative, public art forums and the Four Schools’ Retiring Mr & Mrs Masella WEDDINGS Art Exhibition. The art that is beautifully curated and hung throughout the school is thanks to Mrs Greenberg. She also ran the Iris Award every year. Mrs van Heerden was a stalwart in the Consumers Studies department, spending 23 years of her 42 year career at PHSG. She ran the Contact Club so successfully that not only was Girls’ High’s reputation of a caring, loving school cemented in the community but there was a waiting list of girls wanting to join. Mrs van Heerden also pioneered Formula 1 in Schools’ Technology Challenge internationally, in Singapore in 2010 and Mr & Mrs Human du Preez Mr & Mrs Makanatleng 18 The Iris PHSG 1902 - 2022

OFFICE BEARERS REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL OF LEARNERS In an avant-garde move, this was the first year in which the Student Executive comprised three members who shared responsibilities and were given the opportunity to address assembly on a rotational basis. This platform allowed each of the three Executives to share our unique inspirational and motivational messages, aligned with the school values, as well as connect with the learners in a more individualised way. The reconceptualised role of the Executive Secretary is a novel one introduced in 2022. Thus, the onus of spearheading the way for future leaders fell on my shoulders. It required me to serve a dual role: both as the member of the Executive Student Leadership trio alongside the Head Girl and Deputy-head Girl, as the Executive Secretary, as well as the RCL President. We made decisions conjointly and with Executive Management. I was accountable for the administrative procedures and was engaged in all executive decision-making processes as well the organisation and implementation of various events. My pivotal duty was to bridge the gap between Prefects, RCL and management, because of my dual title and role, and the fact that it allowed me to be the only Prefect involved with the RCL. I was tasked with ensuring that there was efficient and effective communication, collaboration, effort and involvement from all stakeholders. I analysed scenarios from multiple points of view before making an informed decision. As an offshoot of these positions, I also served on the Transformation Committee and was the primary Learner Representative on the SGB. Having to juggle so many different roles with their concomitantly immense workload, brought with it sleepless nights as well as 'Ted Talks', and required a plethora of dedication, motivation, commitment, perseverance and focus. Life being part of the “Tremendous Trio” was fit for a reality show, from Nashe, Lihle and I running events to getting caught singing together in the corridors. We complemented one another’s strengths, we fortified and galvanized each other and gelled together as pathfinders. Leadership is not just about leading in your moments of greatness. It’s about how you lead when you’re at your lowest; the character you portray when the odds are against you. It is about building bridges and enhancing the lives of others. So set the bar high, but still have the ambition to jump over it. Let the ground tremble when the might of PHSG comes together! Tazkia Mahomed Ismail RCL Executive Secretary RCL 2022 can be summed up in a meaningful and evocative concept: The Dawn of a New Era; the Leaving of a Legacy; the Holding High of the Torch. We ARE a force to be reckoned with. We carry out our duty with commitment, zeal and with the trust placed in us by our peers, all within the parameters of the school Code of Conduct. We are resolute and perseverant, but also rational, understanding and open-minded. We stand our ground in a respectful manner, but also know when to compromise and accept valid reasons. Most importantly, our priority will always be the representation of all learners. WE ARE THE RCL OF 2022. 2022 marked the dawn of a new era for the RCL. The expectations and meaning of being a coveted RCL member were innovatively redefined. Although RCL is a role of leadership, we are not only elected to power; we are elected into service. This is not a position for personal gain, but a position for representation of our peers. This ties compellingly into one of the school values: Servant Leadership. RCL is not just a title; it is a calling. In 2022, a new tradition was introduced at PHSG : the formal RCL Induction Ceremony as Leaders and Representatives of the school. The system of the RCL was completely reconstructed in a bid for greater efficacy and relevance. The first step was to identify the misconceptions of, and challenges faced by the RCL in previous years. Subsequently, buy-in of all staff members became imperative and for that we are profusely appreciative. In an address to the PHSG staff, the RCL President delineated and reinforced the redefinition of the role and aim of the current RCL and requested their support and active involvement in RCL endeavours. Unity of various school bodies is the cornerstone of a common vision. The first ever RCL-Prefect team-building to bridge the gap of disconnect between the previously divided Prefects and RCL was successfully attained. We identified viable ways in which the leadership bodies could support and contribute to one another’s visions and goals. Although we carry out different roles under different titles, we are one united Leadership Body, working towards a common goal, albeit from different angles. To facilitate quick, efficient communication, the system of weekly feedback reports was introduced. These were discussed and feedback filtered back to the learners. The rationale for consistent, transparent feedback including reasons and explanations, was so that learners would feel heard and appreciated as well as facilitate their understanding of the logic behind the responses and avoid misunderstandings. Learners were encouraged to have weekly class discussions about essential matters with the permission and in the presence of the form teacher. These served to instil a sense of gratitude in the learners for the opportunities and privileges that PHSG offers. Weekly meetings per grade were introduced to discuss matters of urgency. It was also meant to serve as a mentorship platform for RCL Executives to become acquainted with, invest in and support RCL members as well as facilitate open, honest communication. A further novel implementation was the class visits by the RCL Executives to encourage the effective utilization of their RCL as a channel of communication and to raise matters of concern so that they could be effectively addressed. This was to bond with the learners and portray approachability. To close full circle, I leave you with the words first uttered during my RCL Induction Address: “Let the waterfalls of justice cascade through your veins. Let your voices roar like the rumbling of thunder. You have been chosen, so take the reins. Let the work that you do leave those around you in wonder.” Tazkia Mahomed Ismail RCL President 26 The Iris PHSG 1902 - 2022

This year saw many changes in the way that the RCL operates and with those changes, hope and enthusiasm unfolded around the school. This year was the first year that we had an induction, where every representative received a flower alongside their pledge. Tazkia, our beloved president, served both on the RCL body and on the prefect body. This change was major, as it solidified the RCL-Prefect bond that the school has been striving to achieve and it allowed for collaboration between the two bodies which benefitted the school greatly. This year was the epitome of the phrase: “work hard, play hard” as we merged our roles and duties with a little bit of fun. The RCLPrefect team-building held in Term 2 was the first of its kind, and it saw the RCL and prefect bodies gathering to have discussions regarding leading the school as a unit, as well as brainstorming ideas about projects that the two bodies would work together on. In Term 3, we had our team-building with Boys’ High’s RCL which was also the first of its kind. Both of these events had constructive dialogue which improved the leadership skills of all parties involved. However, it also provided us with the opportunity to socialize and have a bit of fun. Being my third year serving on this council, I can most definitely say that this year was one for the books. My only hope is that the foundation we have built this year will give rise to RCL bodies with proactive, vocal and attentive phenomenal young women. Thank you to Mrs Albertyn and Mrs Andrade for providing us with much needed guidance and attending millions of meetings. Thank you to all reps for working hard this year and for showing qualities of true leaders. Thank you to all in the school for co-operating with us and always vocalizing what matters most to you. To my partners-in-crime, Tazkia and Nkateko, thank you for being so amazing. Working with the two of you has truly been a privilege. The dedication and passion with which you fulfilled your duties inspired me to exert myself in all that I did. May your takeaway be that in any and everything you do, show up. The change that you so badly want to see around you? Be it, for that is a leader. Not someone who holds a position of power, but someone who shows up and acts. HEAD GIRL'S SPEECH Nashe Nyamkure Good morning esteemed guests, executives, honoured staff and of course, Blue badges, the Matrics of 2022. You cannot come to Girls’ High and not love it. You cannot come to Girls’ High and not learn from it. You cannot go through Girls’ High and not be changed by it. Don’t believe me? Let me give you some perspective. Once upon a time, there was a little Grade 8 girl. Only two weeks into Grade 8, she was unceremoniously awarded a detention. Four years later, this same girl addresses you as the Head Girl of 2022. In our five years at Pretoria High School for Girls , we have transformed into true Girls’ High girls. A Girls’ High girl is someone who, no matter the battles and challenges that life throws at her, is resilient enough to persevere and prosper in any situation #positivelyadaptingtochange. She is someone who stands firm in her beliefs and is willing to listen to other perspectives Someone who can see the good in any situation even when that good seems almost invisible. She is someone who, despite not having gone through a breakup, works to be the ultimate version of herself, because she knows that she deserves it. #UnlocktoUnlimit. And finally, she is someone who pushed through all the tears, pulling those all-nighters before a Maths exam to ensure that she reaches her goals. #we’refinallydone. Girls’ High has been our foundation; the soil to our newly sprouted roots that protected us and at some points covered us as a seed, until we felt as though we could not breathe. However, each time we sprouted a little more; slowly growing, striving to reach milestones in our growth no matter what conditions we faced. Finally, we are ready to rise and stand tall and majestic, finding our place in this big, bad world as awe-inspiring plants. Many times, I have been asked what I love about Girls’ High and I always say the diversity, and specifically from our grade, the inclusivity. The way that we come together to celebrate one another and our respective achievements. How we welcome new girls in our grade, and how we always find new and exciting ways to have fun. To Mrs Erasmus, we apologise for how problematic our grade was in Grade 9 and we thank you for being the leader that we needed, making the difficult but necessary decisions for our benefit and growth. To Mrs Andrade, our grade mother, we are sorry for all the detention slips that you had to sign and hand out, including my own, and we appreciate you for all the additional care that you provided us with throughout our high school careers. To all the dedicated staff who worked tirelessly, going above and beyond to ensure that we had all the resources that we needed to get to this point, we thank you. To all those who have been there for us pastorally, whether it be as a psychologist, a form teacher, a coach, or any other member of staff, we truly appreciate you. To our parents who are the reason that we are in this excellent institution, thank you for setting us on the right path to succeed, and for being our support systems in so many ways. And lastly, to the blue badges. For allowing, not only myself but each other, countless opportunities to grow, to learn and to build long-lasting friendships. The memories we share I will always cherish. For your support this year, I am forever thankful. No words can explain just how much it meant and helped me during the course of this year. Despite some challenges experienced over these five years, in the end, we completed this part of our journey with huge achievements and beautiful memories. Though we do not end this journey with the same people we began it with. We have gained some sisters along the way and lost some as well. I would like that we observe a moment of silence for the beautiful angels we have lost. “Though all else may be forgotten, may thy lessons ever last.” In this new chapter of our lives, may we flourish and not accept mediocrity, but strive for our best. Because by virtue of admission, as Girls’ High girls, mediocrity is not our calling, complacency not our home but success our drive. So, we will strive to be the best in all spheres of our lives regardless of where life takes us. I hope that life takes you to places as beautiful as you are and that you make the most of every experience. MATRIC AWARDS 32 The Iris PHSG 1902 - 2022

MATRIC AWARDS Good evening Matric Class of 2022, parents, siblings and staff. Buckle your seatbelts as we recount the rollercoaster ride that was our five years at Pretoria High School for Girls. Ready? Our ride was quite aptly named, ‘It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it’. These words almost perfectly sum up this year. We had plenty sleepless nights, and as a result arrived at school the following day with designer bags under our eyes. The dinner dates, birthday parties and family gatherings we missed because we had a Science write up due on Monday, one of Mrs Ramlaul’s beloved class tests the following Tuesday, an English speech due on Wednesday and an Accounting or Business SBA on Friday. All these sacrifices we made, no social life, no sleep, were all worth it. Look where you are now. Your incredibly proud parents, siblings, family members and guardians, are sitting behind you, positively beaming, smiling from ear to ear. I can confirm that Mom is almost in tears because of the amazing young woman you have become, and Dad already has his phone out, taking the first of what will likely be no less than 100 photos tonight. You have made them proud this year and receiving an award tonight is but the first fruits of your labour. You won the internal dialogue between the version of yourself that said “You know what, who needs to pass matric anyway?”, convinced you were the next self-made, billionaire drop out, and the present you, who worked through her tear-stained Mathematics textbook to make sure you secured that distinction. So, you ought to be proud of yourself too. D’you remember writing letters to your future self for the Seedbank Ceremony? Racking your brain and carefully thinking about what you want to tell 18-yearold you? Writing down all the things you hoped you would accomplish and the person you would become? I know I don’t speak for everyone, but Little Lihle had really high hopes and expectations for me. Sadly, for her, I didn’t meet or even attempt to reach all those expectations. I mean the bar was set really high. But what I’ve come to learn over the last five years, and it was one of our many themes we’ve had over these years, was to positively adapt to change. Every corridor you walked through, every pinboard you walked past, all our teacher’s computer screens, even in assemblies, we were reminded over and over again, to positively adapt to change. The path 13-year-old Lihle set out for me is not the path I was meant to take, and that is perfectly okay. As we grow, learn and understand more about ourselves, the things we want and aspire towards are bound to change. But one thing I know for sure, is that our 13-year-old selves would be incredibly proud of us. Though we started off incredibly shakily, we found our feet, gained our balance and found a way to not only survive our stay at PHSG but make the absolute most of it. I hope we never forget trying so hard not to laugh in class, then making eye contact with that one friend and bursting into laughter. The songs we sang and danced to, even screamed and cried to. The bus rides back from fixtures either hardly containing our smiles or trying so hard not to cry. I hope we treasure these moments and think back on them fondly. I hope we never forget the teachers who truly helped us along the way. The Mrs Krugers who pushed us to reach our full potential. The Ma Ntuli who made sure we did our 30 minutes every day. The Mr Snymans who were always a friendly smile in the corridors. The Ms Jelleys who never ceased to make us laugh. The Mrs Hohlses who nurtured our love for music. The Ms Robbertses who, for some of us, were the only reason we were passing our Maths tests. These are but a few, but we truly do appreciate all of you. I cannot miss this opportunity to thank God. For keeping me and giving me the grace and strength, to get through this year. To all our parents, our brothers and sisters, our friends and every single person who was there for us and held our hand as we went through the ups and downs that was high school, thank you, thank you, thank you. We truly would not have made it to the end of this bumpy ride without you. But that’s just that. We made it through not just this year, but five years of Pretoria High School for Girls. We are the 120th group of strong, highly capable, brilliant beyond belief, selfconfident, bright and drop dead gorgeous, beautiful minds that this school has released to go and conquer this world. And I have no doubt, that we, as the future Presidents, Teachers, Neuroscientists, SA Hockey players, Housewives, Authors and Certified Attorneys, will do exactly that. This world is ours to conquer.
