SPORT 2022 has been a very exciting year for the chess girlies with the Derbies as well as the Boys’ High socials where new friendships were made. It has been wonderful, leading the chess team because of the support received from the team. I would like to thank Lorato Daly who helped with the training of the junior team and sacrificed her time to help grow the team as well as Vice-captain Amber Kahumuza and Neesha Attfield who helped with administrative work. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Mr Snyman who has really helped us every step of the way. He always knew how to cheer us up after we faced a loss, and he was there to celebrate our wins with us. I am eternally grateful for having the privilege of being the Captain for 2022. To watch how each girl and horse combination has grown over the year is honestly remarkable. SPORT S Klopper Organiser This year’s Hockey Season has been filled with many firsts as well as lasts. After nearly two years of no school hockey, for many this year’s season felt like a first. With almost brand-new teams and new coaches, this year was to be a challenge. The season started off with a successful tournament hosted by Heronbridge College, followed by the Eunice Derby, the Jukskei Derby and the annual P-Derby where the First Team was victorious. The next “first” for the First Team was the prestigious St. Mary’s Hockey Festival where we placed 26 out of 32 schools across the country. Next up was the Pretoria League where we placed third, earning our way to Grootskole A. U14A, U15A and U16A played Grootskole B. With perseverance and determination, the First Team came fourth out of sixteen of the best schools north of the Vaal. Despite all the challenges both figuratively and literally, the blood, sweat and tears paid off. I would like to congratulate the following girls on their Provincial Colours: Darcey Brown (U15B), Cailyn Jordaan (U16B), Olivia Dillon (U16B), Tamzin Fat (U18A) and Xena Abrahams (U18A). This year would not have been possible without the time and effort of our amazing coaches and managers within our PHSG hockey family. An enormous thank you to Mrs Klopper for not only organising everything but also sharing your hockey experience as well as the passion you have for the game. Thank you to Coach Las and all the coaches for your commitment and dedication. Lastly thank you to my team and all the hockey players for the endless laughter, the unforgettable memories, and the unbreakable bonds. Being the captain of this team has been an absolute privilege. SPORT S Saunders Organiser “What is a life of fun without a little bit of challenge and adventure?” is something I used to say to myself at the end of every match and it describes what the season of 2022 was like. Netball is a sport that needs discipline, balance, courage and resilience and 2022 has shown that the Netball PHSG Squad has what it takes. Entering a new league this year brought exciting new challenges for our teams. The official season kicked off in autumn and the whole netball squad managed to play against eleven schools. We had the privilege of participating in the P-Derby, Eunice Derby and the Juskei Derby. We also had Inter-house Netball and participated in the Sports’ Festival held by the Prefects of 2022. Supporting each team by watching each other’s games was encouraged to uplift sisterhood within the sport that values teamwork. I would like to thank each netball player who left their hearts on the court. Each of you has contributed to the joy and strength of the team with your talent and determination. Although you have scraped your knee on the court, had frustrations with your team or felt disappointed, remember where you are now. You have improved your skills, bonded with your team and made it to the end of the 2022 season! This couldn’t have been done without our Coaches and Organisers. Thank you to the PHSG staff for putting your time and effort into each team. A special thank you to our organiser Ms Saunders and to Coach Marlize de Bruin, for pushing us to our best, inspiring a deeper love and commitment to netball and setting up little personal wins for each player on the team. No other netball experience will ever match the PHSG netball experience. The netball courts have taught me patience, resilience and kindness with myself and others. And looking at the 2022 teams, I can see that I am not the only one who has learnt these lessons. It was an honour to be your Netball Captain of 2022. My message to the Netball Squads of 2023 is: remember a true netball player is respectful, disciplined, enthusiastic, responsible, a wonderful sportswoman with a passion for netball and guess what? SPORT P Sithole Organiser It takes hard work, determination and above all, passion to make any team great. I undoubtedly believe that the PHSG Soccer Teams of 2022 were indeed GREAT. When the pandemic hit, all sports were faced with the major challenge of not being able to practice or take part in any league matches. It was a setback but the soccer girls bounced back and returned better than ever this season! Being part of the First Team has been such an amazing experience. What a privilege it has been to play along-side all these talented young ladies with a shared love for our sport. This season has definitely been one for the books, filled with so many highlights from getting our new kits to making it to the quarter finals in the Playoffs. As captain, I cannot express just how proud I am of all of my teammates. I would like to thank all the coaches and staff members for their endless support and efforts. Without you all this season would not be nearly as successful as it has been this year! Finally to my teammates and fellow players, it has been an honour to be your captain for 2022. SPORT C Shelley Organiser “What is Squash?” is everyone’s first reaction to hearing this sport’s name. But do not underestimate squash! It is fast-paced, intense, a sport of coaches and learners who put their passion in the game. It is not only a sport but a place to de-stress, to have a laugh, burn your thighs and get cold water from the dispenser. The environment is welcoming and competitive. How could one not fall in love? This year squash was able to return to normality playing in the Northerns' League, the P-Derby and St. Mary’s Festival. We are even proud to boast of one of our new coaches who won gold in the plate section at the Commonwealth Games. Hopefully next year brings about the reintroduction of the All Girls’ Festival which is always a highlight for the Squash Team. I would like to thank Mrs Shelley, Coach Mwansa, and the staff for taking us under their wing, guiding us not only on the court but with little lessons of life, with a laugh to brighten the days that seemed gloomy. A thank you to my friends that I met along the way, friends who became family, on and off the court. It is not easy to part with an environment that has brought comfort, happiness and the product of great leg muscles! But I am beyond grateful for the experience. So if you’re reading this and you find yourself asking what squash is; Squash is the people and the passion. It has been an honour serving as Captain for 2022. Take it easy. SPORT Swimming is an incredibly difficult sport but it’s also the most rewarding. The sense of weightlessness one experiences, the power one feels, pulling one’s body through the water, and even the sense of accomplishment one gains after an intense training session, make swimming so gratifying, fulfilling even. It’s what makes falling in love with the sport so easy. The hard work and dedication that our team has shown throughout the year truly reflect the passion and love that we share for aquatic sports. Our team has displayed an immense determination and dedication to the sport. Despite having to spend long hours in the pool for intense training sessions, and despite having to go up against challenging competitors, each one of our swimmers has consistently worked on themselves individually, so that our team was able to progress. Our Swim Team consists of talented individuals, who are all motivated and who all share a passion for the sport. Even though swimming may be considered as an individual sport, I believe we’ve all contributed to the development of a strong team, consisting of dependable individuals. We’ve cheered for each other on the pool decks, and calmed each other’s nerves before races, and we’ve spent loads of time in the pool together. This inclusive, supportive, and caring team we’ve created will, without a doubt, always persist in the face of adversity. SPORT Y Jackson Organiser I do not believe I have ever felt a more relatable, heart-dropping and most definitely louder groan than the one heard when Coach yells the word “Baseline!”. Every single woman who has been to one volleyball practice knows exactly what I am talking about. It is what I love about this sport. Not only were there bonds formed during the countless hours of agonising torture at practice, but especially on court during matches. These included the Goliath Tournament, the Fourways Tournament and the Tuks Tournament. A special moment blossomed when our First Team placed third in the annual Mafikeng Tournament which is known as the most significant volleyball tournament of the year! I have never been more incredibly proud of my team. I would like to extend an incredible amount of thanks to our sport organisers, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Rwida, and Mrs Buckley as well as our coaches who trained and prepared us. I would like to thank my Vice-captain, Amy Matzopoulos for helping me and supporting me countless times throughout this year. This sport would not be what is it without them. I have always admired how easily it is to make friends at volleyball and how much of a fun sport it really is. All the carefree jokes, shared pain, and dedication are what make volleyball, Volleyball. Besides all the laughter, it is a spirited sport. You will have girls cheering on the side-lines until their throats hurt. They are continuously encouraging you to keep moving and to keep the fire alive. We care for each other as sisters would. SPORT M Albertyn Organiser Playing water polo at PHSG is a challenging yet an exciting sport. It requires physical and mental strength. Water polo requires full focus, attention and allround discipline, but most importantly enthusiasm. And that is what our team has! Being the only school in Pretoria that offers water polo as a sport can be quite challenging, especially against the top schools in the country but that did not stop us. Rather than focusing on winning, we focused on learning new skills when playing against the top schools in the country. By doing this, this team has shown immense enthusiasm and going the extra mile, whether it may be going to extra practices, participating in all water polo events, whether it was school or club related. Playing in these amazing tournaments such as Old Petrians, the National Aquatics Festival in Durban and various St Stithians polo tournaments were amazing experiences for us. This team has become a family. These girls are the foundation for the future of water polo in Pretoria and I can honestly say that they have made me so proud. They have all played their hearts out and being excited to learn about this amazing sport. This sport has been the highlight of my high school career and from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you to Mrs Albertyn and the various PHSG staff members who managed our teams as well as our Water Polo co-ordinator, Mrs. Weideman. We appreciate your time and effort that you put into our team. To Coach Michael, thank you for showing your passion for this amazing sport and for everything that you taught us. You have instilled a love and passion for this sport that will stay in our hearts forever. Lastly, the players of 2022, you have made my year as captain one to remember, I wish you the best of luck for the upcoming season. One last team motivation: keep up your determination and remember that the score on the scoreboard does not reflect the passion and love that you have for this sport. MUSIC This year started off very emotionally for both the Senior Choir and the New Voices Choir with Mr Gerieke and Ms Dugmore taking their leave. But with that we gained Mrs Maré and Mr Swanepoel for which we are very thankful. It was also the start of a very exciting year because as Covid-19 regulations loosened, competitions started again. The Senior choir started participating in competitions such as the Pretoria Eistefodd and ATKV. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have participated in many other events that happened throughout the year. We never expected this year to take us to where we are today. I am also very proud to say that after three whole years we finally got to wear our dresses again which was an exciting moment for the girls. I would like to thank Mrs Maré, Mr Swanepoel, Ms Rossouw, Mr Slotow and Mrs van Heerden for their hard work and dedication towards Choir. I would also like to thank all the matrics especially my two deputies, Bongi and Okuhle, for their dedication, their patience, their love, their support and hard work they showed to Choir. Without them, I would not have able to lead the choir properly. The New Voices took to the stage and swept us off our feet with their lovely performances at the Mother’s Day Concert. We are delighted to see how many of them were there this year. I would like to thank the matrics and the PHSG Senior Choir and the New Voices for their hard work and dedication to the Choir this year. MUSIC When many think of music, they think of an orthodox orchestra filled with violins and cellos or they think of the electrifying vibrancy of guitars and drums but never really the Marimba Band. To the humble and iridescent marimba players, I say thank you. Every Wednesday at 14:30, the hall would turn into a haven of sweet African sounds where the base is the heart; the tanners, the joy; the harmony, the support and the melody, the messengers of our song. We would hear Mr Mabasa explain the meaning of our songs and from then we knew we had to play with intention and purpose so the meanings would not be in vain but be lessons and remedies to any listener, any soul and any spirit. Thank you to Mr Mabasa who taught us how to deliver these remedies, who was patient with us and who found a way to take 16 different ladies and make them into one ensemble. Thank you to Mrs Makanatleng, our strong, guiding hand, for your dedication and for ensuring that we had the platform to be the Marimba Band. Thank you to my fellow sisters-in-song for your individuality, for making every rehearsal a jubilee and for putting your heart into every key. To those who remain, may you be the bona fide meaning behind marimba and continue to remind others of the fire within our unique music so that when they think of music, they can only think of the marimba. To any listener or audience, in the words of Zoë Modiga, "Noma sikulesimo thina sizo jikisa izinto" which means regardless of the situation, we will change things. MUSIC “Music is the soundtrack to your life,” said Dick Clark. In a world of inconsistencies, one thing that will always stay for the music girls is the music lessons, whether during school time or online. Music is a constant. This goes not only for the music girls, but for everyone. It is a bond, a bond fifty of us have the privilege of sharing between 16:30-18:30 every Wednesday, four times during the year in our special music concerts and some long Saturday mornings. The Orchestra has been fortunate to have been able to host and participate in our highly anticipated concerts - the Valentine’s Day concert; the Mother’s Day concert; the Four Schools’ Concert, which made its return after two years; and Night of the Proms, which were all very exciting and successful! The orchestra also took part in the Pretoria Eisteddfod where they received an A+ for their three pieces! This year was definitely noteworthy. Thank you to Mrs Hohls, who has for such a long period, led the orchestra, but also for being a motherly figure and the constant for all of us. To Mrs Smit for all the behind-the-scenes work she does. To my deputy, Woo An, who has helped me steer this ship of responsibility and has a special place in my heart. Thank you to my little family in Orchestra, and the friends I have made along the way. It is you, the people, who make the orchestra. The instruments are just a bonus. It is a bittersweet feeling to leave this home I have built in Orchestra. However, with the good foundation Orchestra has created, (cue some music in your head) I know I will always take the memories with me. It has been my pleasure to lead this Orchestra. MUSIC “My family is my life and everything else comes second as far as what’s important to me”. These words by Michael Imperioli really resonate with me when I think of Rhythmony. Rhythmony is my family. This group is my haven. I feel a sense of belonging each time I enter the different rehearsal venues. My time with this group has not been in vain. Both my musical and emotional intelligence was broadened during my time here in Rhythmony. I believe my peers can attest to that. We learnt a lot of things from our wonderful conductor, Mr Ndlovu. He guided us to be the musical beings we are today, and we will forever be grateful for the intellectual talks he would give us during our “breaks”. I would also love to extend a big thank you to Mrs Mangena for being our support system at school and being the backbone of Rhythmony. Without her, this group would be in shambles. This last thank you is for the Rhythmony Group. Thank you for trusting me to be your head for 2022. In the beginning it terrified me to lead you but leading you was the highlight of my year. You made it so easy because you provided me with the support I needed when I was lost, and even during the long rehearsals you always made the effort to lift my spirits. I love you so much and I hope my journey with you does not end when we go our separate ways. Let us continue to spread love with our voices. CULTURE “Every art form will lend you its eye and offer a new way to see.” Laura Jaworski This was Public Speaking in 2022. Whether it be in front of your class, a competition or in an auditorium; it is no easy feat to speak in public. But through practice, corrective criticism and not giving up, the art of public speaking can become an activity that brings about comfort to the soul. As this was the first ‘normal’ year since Covid-19, activities and competitions were everywhere. This year the public speakers competed in the P-Derby held in Potchefstroom. We placed first and second in the competition. The Eunice Derby was at home and our seniors placed third and fourth. We also had our first Inter-house Public Speaking since 2019. At Public Speaking we believe in growth. The value of our club is that anyone can come as they are. We create a space where they are free to grow; a space that welcomes imperfections and grows incapable seedlings into beautiful flowers through correction and encouragement. This is the place where friendships are created, ideas are shared, topics are discussed, identities and morals are formed. In Public Speaking your strengths are discovered and honed while your weaknesses are seen, accepted and improved. Our club is more than removing your aversion to speeches, Public Speaking is about having an unquenchable fire within you and expressing all that you feel. Public Speaking gives the audience a glimpse into the mind and heart of the speaker. The art of speaking is exactly that: an art. Public Speaking is relevant because there is such power in words. We have the ability to shift people’s perceptions or change the world without talk. Although they say actions speak louder than words; it is through our words that people act. SICC has also given many the opportunity to learn and grow talents as well as discover new ones. The dance groups included Hip Hop, Indian, Vocals, Gumboots, African, Poetry and many more. This year new dance groups Afro, Amapiano and Bacardi joined the cultural kaleidoscope. It was immense pleasure to work alongside the exceptionally talented learners. The SICC groups were able to perform at Spring Fair this year, despite not having the annual SICC evening. Without the hard work and dedication of all ladies and the outstanding leadership of the matric heads of each section, none of this would be possible. Lastly a big thank you to Mrs Dowlath and Mrs Mjadu for their continued support and dedication to seeing this important club flourish. CULTURE We live in an age where human rights violations are on the rise and tensions between the powerhouse states are at an all-time high. At MUN, we aim to create a community of future delegates and pace-setters and strive to be a catalyst for intellectual and lateral thinking that puts a creative spin on global issues. It is a safe space to have necessary conversations that ensure our youth remain aware, educated, compassionate, outspoken, involved and au fait with complex, pertinent issues. Our colourful debates ran the gamut from pizza flavours and shapes, to the current economic crises and the Covid-19 vaccine. MUN is not just an extra-mural that enhances Debating skills; it is a platform for students to analyse the world we live in and confidently express their views on complex, tricky and even sensitive issues that become a cause celebre, without feelings of discomfiture. MUN never fails to impassion and ignite a spark for International Relations, Politics and the United Nations. We recreate the United Nations (without all the mayhem and chaos) and nurture our future luminaries to debate diplomatically yet fiercely. Few experiences come close to the immense gratification felt when reflecting upon an MUN Debater’s growth in both skill and confidence. Excitement was palpable at the very first MUN Inter-house Tournament this year. In keeping abreast of current affairs, the thought-provoking topic fell under the UN Security Council and comprised the following: The Ukraine crisis and its effect on human rights in terms of : (I) Discrimination against Ukrainian refugees from minority groups and (II) Comparison between the global response to violation of Human rights during Ukraine crisis vs crises in African, Asian and Middle Eastern Countries since 2000. Immense gratitude must be expressed to Mrs Oertel and Ms du Toit for their development of our MUN Debaters. My appreciation must also be expressed to Arin Sithole and Aluta Gaulana, Vice-captains for 2022, for all they have invested in MUN. CLUBS Building kits set, laptops and robots charged, and minds ready to tackle global community issues. Welcome to the Robotics Club! To say our family grew large post-Covid would be an understatement. With the fresh recruits from the junior grades, we started the year with a bang. They had to learn how to build and programme a robot for their first annual competition - Virtual GEAR, which is an international, virtual competition. While the juniors were preparing for Virtual GEAR, our senior team, the Subway Surfers (Michelle Jaramba, Nina Mzileni, Krisha Bhoola, Vaibhav Maharaj and Danita Naiker), were busy with the biggest annual event: First Lego League. The girls were excited to hear of the resumption of face-to-face and physical interactions after a year of participating online. The theme continued from last year’s Cargo Connect Replay. The team placed fifth regionally. Even though we were small in numbers, our infamous Cha-Cha slide group dance and last-minute snacking with the other teams completed the fun experience. In addition, both seniors and juniors competed in this year's FLL competition in late October, with Super-Powered being the theme. A huge thank you to Mrs van Heerden and Mrs Mjadu for everything they do, especially the hugs and whispers of encouragement. Mrs van Heerden, who also leaves the Robotics Club at the end of the year, deserves a special farewell. Thank you, Malaika Miteo (Deputyhead and my doppelgänger), and Kego Kau (Head of Programming) for your support and invaluable friendship over the years. Finally, thank you to the girls. Without you, Robotics would not be possible. It has been an absolute honour to have been a part of the Robotics family. I began as an inquisitive Grade 8 with no knowledge of the technological world and now aspire to be a robotics programmer one day. I have experienced chaos, robots with their own minds, inside jokes, and endless laughter. These moments have bonded us and will always be cherished. Just some final words: All you need is common sense, diligence, and perseverance to drive you forward. Also, remember to use your reset motors and build those starting blocks! SERVICE ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others’. This quote by Gandhi is the foundation on which the Tutor Learner Committee (TLC) stands. We are more fondly known as the Tender Love and Care committee because we have strived to show love and support to every girl who comes our way, seeking aid. This year has been gruelling thanks to the ripple effects of the pandemic. It was difficult to have effective tutoring sessions as our old systems didn’t cater for all the restrictions Covid-19 brought along. But thanks to innovative ideas, we created a new system that was effective during and after the pandemic, like group tutoring. Even after the pandemic, the new way of tutoring has proven to be too successful to remove. Thank you to the TLC and tutors of 2022. We have dedicated our time and effort, not to claim achievements, nor for money, but for our peers. There is an incomparable form of happiness that is found in witnessing the success of those you care about and that is the gratification the TLC received. For your hard work and effort, from the bottom of my heart I thank you. PHSG is a family, and Tutoring plays a big role in that. After all, what is a family for, if not to help each other in times of need? Thank you to Mrs Eysell for facilitating Tutoring in trying circumstances and to Mrs Gouws for your hard work in implementing a lot of new ideas. Thank you to all the teachers who monitored each session and to the teachers who saw a learner in need and suggested tutoring. My biggest gratitude goes to the tutors who put in the time, work and dedication to keep Tutoring afloat. Your presence throughout the year was felt. You are the steam that keeps the engine running after all. Special mention goes out to Kumiko van der Spuy who lifted the weight off my shoulders when I couldn't carry it alone, and to my deputies, Malaika Kamangu and Amy Roux, and TLC members who were there alongside me every step of the way. To those who are reading this, remind yourselves to serve others whenever you can. If you have the tools to help, then do not hesitate to jump at the opportunity to help someone who needs it, even if there is no tangible reward in sight. SERVICE 2022 was an exciting year for the First Aiders as we went back to the normal, crazy, extra-curricular schedule. We had a lot of interest in the annual first aid course that was presented during the March holidays and hence, our team grew quite a lot. We were able to fill almost all the spots at the sports practices, which I am very grateful for. We got to know each other at our informal sessions and gained some more valuable information regarding the procedures at PHSG. ‘Your health is an investment, not an expense’. That was the motto we lived by in 2022. This year was filled with actionpacked events, mild health scares but most of all, healing. One of the accomplishments we had this year was the building of our sisterhood and familiarity. Because First Aid isn’t like other extracurricular activities, we rarely see each other during shifts so as a team we decided to have bonding sessions and picnic. Our aim was to get to know each other and to be more united as a committee. This year was the first ‘normal’ year we’ve had since Covid-19 and the First Aid Committee has been busy. With extracurricular activities coming back in full swing, plus the new events that were introduced, a lot of the first aiders got to practice what they learnt in action. I want to thank our Grade 12 First Aiders. Thank you that you continued with duties, despite being busy with Matric. I appreciate all your efforts! To the rest of the team, thank you for always going the extra mile! Finally, Mrs O’Reilly has been an integral part of the effectiveness and the spirit of First Aid. She is a wonderful support system and one of the pillars of the committee The First Aid Committee believes in service and humility. We have been taught the skills we practice for the purpose of helping those in need. We believe that there is no greater joy than being able to aid someone who cannot help themselves. All in all, First Aid was a beautiful experience. To those who might be interested in joining, remind yourself that service is true power and let us become intentional in acts of service and most importantly, in taking care of ourselves. SERVICE 2022 was the year that the Newspaper Club truly exemplified the motto of "We work in hope". From a small club with a population of about five or six, we grew into a mighty body of curious journalists. With cellphones, pens and notebooks in hand the club was always ready to tackle the next 'big scoop' on school events and student life. The team of journalists, cartoonist and my Deputy-head have been a pleasure to work with. Their never-ending ideas, such as the "PHSG Angels column " and "Fun pages for the girls " to increase readership were not only inspiring, but refreshing. On 24 August 2022, the matrics had their last session at the club. A surprise picnic with snacks and cards, planned by the juniors of the club, was a fitting and memorable send-off. As the matrics of the newspaper club leave to tackle their next biggest adventure, we give one last shout out to the pillars of our club: Mrs Oertel and Mrs du Toit. Their guidance and support, unwavering throughout the year, gave the journalists the courage to express their ideas. With their wisdom we were able to sprout and grow and as the months passed, they helped shape and mould determined journalists. It is my fourth and final time writing this report for the magazine and each year there was something new to share. It has been an honour to serve my school and discover a hidden passion along the way. As an Old Girl, I look forward to reading editions rich in content and full of club sprit. SERVICE I have been in Sound and Lighting since 2018 and this committee has been well-known and appreciated by everyone. Unfortunately Covid-19 hit and this committee had no use because there were little to no events or concerts happening at school for a couple of years. We did still help for assembly when we streamed from the hall. Sound and Lighting has taught me a lot about the school and how everything operates. Staying at school until the late hours of the night and sacrificing one’s time to serve the school really helps one grow as an individual and helps the school immensely as-well. One thing I really like about sound and lighting is that you do not need special talent to excel in this activity. Attending your duties and volunteering to attend concerts expands your knowledge on the system and the better you get. Sound and Lighting taught me to be selfless and help as much as possible because sound and lighting truly is the backbone of every activity and concert that happens at school and I’m extremely privileged not only to have been a part of this committee but to be the Head of Sound and Lighting 2022. I would also like to thank Ms Sithole and Mr Meyer for all the time and training they put into this committee. It does not go unnoticed. OLD GIRLS' ASSOCIATION OLD GIRLS' ASSOCIATION New Year Tea Party Our first engagement of the year was the newly introduced get-together between the 2022 Committee and Old Girl teachers at the school on Thursday 20th January. There are 18 Old Girls on staff, and 9 attended. The function gave the committee an opportunity to communicate some plans for the year and ask for feedback and input. Abi van Heerden volunteered to be the Old Girl teacher representative on the OGA Committee. Kenyabu Sakata was the representative from the learner body and planning for the Reunion commenced. New Projects The OGA restarted the Iris Bear Project in Term 1. We had bears, badges, and button badges in stock. All dresses were made and donated by Nicky Selby again. We appreciate her contribution. The OGA prepared an OGA-specific design for the Old Girl Badge, as the badges currently in hand are purely PHSG badges. These became available for purchase in March 2022 at R80 per badge. Our chiffon scarf with the iris print has been incredibly well received and sold out in three weeks from start of sales. The material is currently very expensive, so we kept the profit margin small and introduced the scarf at R260. Our next project was a beautiful printed recycled cotton tote. There were some hiccups along the line with bag acquisition, but these were sorted in time. The introductory price was R140 per bag. Grade 8 with Old Girl Family Welcome We met a few Old Girls with Grade 8 daughters, sisters, nieces in the Margaret Roberts Garden for tea. The weather was perfect and the school caterers did an amazing job in welcoming the guests. We hope to make this an annual event. Exciting for us is that this get-together delivered new members for the committee. A special thanks to the school and General Assistants who are taking such good care of the quad. The Old Girls have never seen this quad look as beautiful as it does now. A Birthday Celebration Bear In Term 2 work began in earnest to make a 120th Birthday Commemorative OGA Bear. She is named Faith. These bears’ uniforms were designed by Hannelie Liebenberg. Old Girl Modilati Masipa took on the task of making the shirts and ties, with help from committee members. 50 Bears were produced and nearly all sold at the Spring Fair. Spring Fair 2022 Our next big event was the Spring Fair on 3 September 2022. It was fantastic to see all the committee members working so full of enthusiasm. We sold scarves, badges, loads of Iris and Faith Bears, 3 Hope Bears, pickled goods, cupcakes, fudge and fabulous macaroons in Girls’ High colours. We had beautiful posters advertising our items. At our stall we displayed the Fleur de Lis Blue Gin, a recipe developed by Margaret Roberts’ daughter, Sandy. This was primarily to create excitement for the upcoming reunion. Step aside Coffee, this is a job for Gin Immediately after SF it was full steam ahead with gin production. Heidi worked on designs. Sandy on text, James Collins printed our label tags and package inserts. Sandy lovingly and carefully sought and experimented with corks and seals until it was just right. Sandy Roberts treated the committee to a Gin Tasting with lovely snacks. PHSG Reunion ‘0, ‘1 and ‘2 Abbi Maré, Old Girl and member of staff took on event coordination for the Reunion and started planning back in April already. This became a massive undertaking which she managed with such calmness and skill. Abbi not only brought in new ideas, she got the members (new and old) excited and made it very easy for us to know what needed to be done by when. Abbi also set up the Reunion tab on the Old Girls’ webpage and her beautiful designs have been quite a talking point. It was not an easy event to organize as we had to catch up the ’0 and ‘1 years and wanted to make it extra special as a birthday year. While there were fewer attendees than projected, this became a blessing in disguise as we could make use of the Formal Gardens as a venue. It made for planning and replanning, but it was worth it in the end. Thank you to Kendall Harbour for managing tickets, Lavonne Wittman for organizing caterers and together with Neo, running the Silent Auction. Thank you, Tanith and Neo for the cake. Thank you also goes to the Music Department, Lavonne and Jane for the music. Murphy paid us a visit when raindrops came down as the flute ensemble began. Thankfully the rain did not bucket down. Thank you also to all the ladies on the committee who helped with set up, sales and clearing of our items at the end of the evening. Abi, Alison and the OAs assisted by the learners ably undertook all the décor, prep of name tags, forms etc. The school tour became quite an event this year- thank you to Doret and Phillipa for looking after these tours. The school was also in a beautiful condition, and for this thanks to the SGB, the Estate Manager and grounds-staff. It’s a big campus to look after and it looked wonderful. We look forward to the Sports Day and AGM as I prepare this report. Abi van Heerden, our Old Girl teacher representative managed this event. There has been great interest in participating, and a number of sporting codes will be able to participate. Nicole Trollip Chairlady of PHSG OGA PHSG 1902 - 2022 The Iris 147
