HOUSES No words could ever amount to fully explaining my experience being Head of House. All I can truly say is that there were an overwhelming number of emotions that were felt and one thing I am glad about is accepting the position with an open mind and heart. As this was my first time having a great amount of control and influence over 150 people, my mistakes were quickly noticed. However, one of the many things I am grateful for in my house is how forgiving they were. They provided me with the atmosphere to make mistakes because they trusted me in doing a better job next time. The first House Assembly I led, I realized that we lacked the enthusiasm and brightness we had a couple of years back. With the help of my Deputy and Cheerleaders, we made it our goal to consistently lead by guiding them through our behavior instead of our words. In doing so, they adapt and reciprocate the same energy and spirit to us. I voiced to them that we are going to make it our aim to be perceived as a house of great determination, drive and discipline. I am delighted to say that we did exactly that and more. My relationship with them was very understanding and inclusive. We established a platform of mutual respect and responsibility pretty quick and that made us value each other more. I am comfortable in saying we looked forward to House Assemblies because we knew we would have fun and gain something from each assembly, there was never a dull moment. When I got the position the school was still in the state of restricted activities due to the pandemic. What I observed being performed by previous Heads of House was what I expected to do too, I was proven wrong pretty quick. Beginning of 2022 more events and activities recommenced, and I can honestly say I do not know what could have happened without the presence of my Deputy and my teacher Head of House. The Inter-house Athletics was the first big event we led, and I am beyond proud of my house on how we performed and cheered considering the years we missed out on in doing that. We got 1st place for the Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz and that honestly has to be the highlight of my year because in 2021 we placed 2nd just by one point. What I took out of this accomplishment is that, with taking responsibility of your own circumstances we are able to maximise our potential. Inter-house Swimming and Water Polo we also dominated by placing in the top 5 for each. The house has made us profoundly pleased with them that even if we do not execute our talents effectively, we are always able to appreciate what we have attained. We are gratified at having the opportunity to witness the growth and development of the house over our period in office. We are confident that they will carry on the legacy we have begun and continue to build on the success in the time ahead. Lerato Xaba Head of Aitken HOUSE HIGHLIGHTS We are not the same. We are not the same. These are the words uttered in one of our house cheers. These are the words that are embedded in every person in the house. These are the words that separate us from the other nine houses. This is passion. This is Athlone. Athlone thrives on team effort and the collective love we have for our house. Excellence is the standard in our house. But this excellence does not just develop out of nowhere. It takes an enormous effort from everyone. We understand that we are not athletically the strongest house, so in every other aspect we definitely make up for it. Although this year was quite tough on us, we boast holding the Spirit Cup trophy, winning the junior Inter-house Netball, winning Inter-house Hockey and placing in the top 4 in academics, soccer, public speaking, squash, basketball, and supporter’s card signatures. This took a lot of effort from everyone involved, especially for all the new interhouse event which were added. Thank you to Mrs Mackenzie for helping lead the house. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. To my Deputy-head of House, partner-in-crime and friend, Akhiwe Busakwe, who worked tirelessly in leading the house and making sure we were always ahead organisationally; to the cheerleaders who we always roped in for little things and for losing your voices numerous times; and to Athlone, a final thanks. You have given me the gift of passion, of friendship, of sisterhood. Becoming Head of House was one of the greatest honours of my life. May the legacy of passion and the love of Athlone which was instilled in us continue in future generations. From the moment Clarendon won the Inter-house Athletics Spirit Cup in 2019, I knew that we were a force to be reckoned with. Since then, Clarendon has never dipped in enthusiasm and true love for our house. We show up and put effort into everything we do, but most of all, we have fun! Clarendon is not just a house, but a home, a safe space for everyone. I could not be prouder of how far we have come as a House despite the many challenges we have faced, individually and collectively. We have found our footing in House Assemblies, uniting every grade, and figuring out how to utilise our different strengths and overcome our weaknesses. Our focus has been to “enjoy every moment” and I think we have managed to do that. Some of the Class of 2022’s fondest memories come from 2018. The Grade 8 camp where we tried to scare each other with horror stories of Maisie, coming first in Inter-house Athletics and starting our annual tradition of Clarendon’s Got Talent where we were silly and goofy. It was a time where we bonded and were able to be comfortable and vulnerable with one another. Our strong bond stems from these fond memories and led us to being able to have important discussions about mental health, not neglecting playing fun games of course! I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to lead this incredible house and I will be eternally grateful for the people who helped me along the way, especially the teachers. I love my house and all the gorgeous people in it. Mrs van Heerden, thank you for being the best Head of House Clarendon could ask for. “Sunnyside up’s going to take the cup”. Dylan Bosch Head of Clarendon “For there are many things I have never seen: In every spring, in every wood, there is a different green.” J.R.R Tolkien Buxton is that different green The year started off with Buxton setting the trend for the year winning the Inter-house Athletics. Great participation and diligence followed throughout the year. Although we faced some losses throughout the year, I commend the House for their volunteering efforts and sense of enthusiasm to participate in all house events. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my Deputyhead of House, Ofentse Lebele, the planner behind it all. I appreciate her great effort and partnership. The Buxton teachers are the stems in our green plant, from ensuring the learners make it to House Assembly, providing us with tools to decorate house boards, allowing us to use their classrooms for house events and ensuring our Buxtoniers were informed of all events. Without them there wouldn’t be stability within the house. “Buxton, jou lekker ding. Jou lekker ding “ There is upcoming greatness and growth for Buxton. HOUSES Maya Angelou said, "We may not be able to control all of the events that happen to us, but we can choose not to be reduced by them." Connaught has previously been labelled as the second best, if not written off entirely. We had indeed lost a number of times in previous years, but this did not lead us to believe that we were failures; rather, we were simply learning how to harness the game. The school year began with an introduction to the Grade 8s. Mrs Russell and the Deputy-head, together with our cheerleaders were present to ensure that positive energy and welcome prevailed The challenge we faced this year was to resuscitate the drive and energy throughout the house. What we greatly appreciated was how eager the Connaught members were to ensure that the enthusiasm returned. The Inter-house activities were hard-fought. When we announced the results of the activities, the applause was always heartfelt and filled with joy, especially for the bottle tops. The Grade 8s and their matrics enjoyed their picnic, where we shared delicious snacks and meaningful conversations. Our House enjoyed doing growth affirmations the most as it was so uplifting. I am deeply grateful to our House members for entrusting me with this extraordinary leadership role. I could not have done it without each and every one of them. Everyone in the house worked together to achieve our goals. I will always remember our house as one that is determined, resilient, driven, and unapologetically emancipated. Carly Madiba Head of Connaught M Russell Head of House Carly Madiba Head of House Sisterhood. Teamwork. Dedication and Spirit. These are qualities that Duncan possesses. From Grade 8 to Head of House in Grade 12, I have witnessed the growth of the house. The energy and dedication of the house to reach their full potential were what drove the house to get a step closer to the Clephan Shield. 2022, the year to unlock limitations, was the year I was granted the opportunity to lead Duncan to unlock their hidden talents and potential. Covid meant that there has been no activities or house challenges which caused an impact on the learners today and was a challenge to me in terms of having to introduces these activities to the girls and motivate them to participate in the house teams. As Head of House, I made sure the girls were prepared and confident in what they would play by arranging practices and regularly visiting to their classrooms to check up on them. With my Deputy-head of House, I held House Assembly. We arranged certificates and medals to thank the learners who participated regardless of the results. We created a platform for each girl to discuss their ideas and concerns. Duncan has a strong bond of sisterhood, despite challenges. S Saunders Head of House Nkateko Mkhonto Head of House Duncan has always been the best house at Girls’ High, carrying the school values along with our own values such as respect, dedication, sisterhood and spirit. McWilliam always ensures that we portray behaviour filled with respect and honesty. McWilliam is a shining star that emits energy and love. We support each other and help each other in everything we do. We are the legendary shining stars. We are sisters who look out for one another, and, like any other siblings, we don't always get along. However, we do not hold grudges either. We learn from our mistakes and forgive one another, which allows us to work well together. McWilliam’s achievements would not have been possible without the contribution and participation of every student and staff member. Thank you to the teachers and especially Mrs Ramlaul. It is a community, a sisterhood I have been glad to be part of. We wanted to unlock the dormant potential that has been in Gladstone girls ever since we came back from Covid-19 and that is exactly what happened. The vision was to allow everyone in Gladstone to participate in an event. It was great seeing the smile on their faces when they realized that they could do new activities. We came second in the Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz and first in the General Knowledge Quiz overall. Thank you to all the girls in the younger grades that helped with organizing the sports and cultural activities. One thing I love about my house is our camaraderie and determination to try our best. HOUSES Selborne has a spirit like no other. Our biggest aim of 2022 was to revive the Selborne spirit and set our plan of claiming the Clephan Shield in motion. The cheerleaders worked tirelessly to come up with new cheers and interact with the house so that we could get our hearts pumping again. Keneiloe and I worked side by side with the support of our Head of House, Mrs Human-du Preez, to ensure success. It wasn't an easy task but I was lucky enough to have the strongest support from the house. The journey has been a rollercoaster ride but enjoyable nonetheless. The excited smiles of the Grade 9s and eagerness to participate from the Grade 10s and 11s kept us going. My favourite part about this year was meeting the Grade 8s.They taught me how to be a better leader and always reassured me with their kind words of affirmation. A house is exactly that. It's not just a coloured shirt or compulsory Form class. It's the bond between a community of girls going through the same struggle of high school. From the first day I laid my hands on that purple shirt, I knew I was in the right place. I've always harboured a burning passion for Selborne and I don't think that flame will ever die out. My blood truly is purple. To the last "WUSHE", to the last "VICTORY IS COMING" and to the last "EVERY DAY WE FEEL LIKE?" this journey has truly been a blessing. Micara May Head of Selborne L Human du Preez Head of House Micara May Head of House Nelson Mandela once said, “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.” Van Zyl is an example of this, facing each new challenge with optimism and passion. The dark clouds began to clear with the arrival of our Grade 8s. They showed their potential and enthusiasm at the Grade 8 camp and were ready to tackle the rest of the year with determination. At the Inter-house Netball, they brought home the gold and made us immensely proud. The Inter-house Gala and Athletics did not go as expected but Van Zyl sees that as a speed bump on the road to success. We persevered and came in first in the Inter-house MUN Debating. Every house event had a positive atmosphere and everyone showed a willingness to participate to bring Van Zyl to the top. Van Zyl showed its prowess coming third in the annual Inter-house Quiz and fifth in the Inter-house Basketball. Alas, we had to say goodbye to someone very dear to Van Zyl. We thank you, Mrs de Bruin for your dedication and love for van Zyl. You will always have a place in our hearts. However, we rejoice in your new position as Deputy Principal. Van Zyl welcomes Mrs Shelley as she takes on the position of Head of House. Her joyous spirit and sense of humour will be a lovely addition to Van Zyl. We thank our Deputy-head of House, Mrs. Dowlath, and all the staff members who make Van Zyl the house that it is. I thank the cheerleaders and Matrics for their support. A big thank you to our Deputy-head of House, Georgie Dillon, for your contribution of love and support for Van Zyl. May Van Zyl continue to shine brightly for years to come. There may have been a few challenges throughout this year but they have definitely not overshadowed the amazing time of living in North Lodge. The theme for 2022 “Unlock to Unlimit” has been the key to success, especially in the hostel. With 58 out of the 72 girls in the hostels being juniors and still trying to unlock their full potential, we matrics and Grade 11s of North Lodge have offered guidance and stability for their time at Girls’ High. Our hostel traditions returned after the pandemic and the boarders have been more involved and eager to participate. It has been important to pass these traditions on to the next generation. Being in the junior wing of hostel with the Grade 8s has been a great experience. I have been able to watch these girls develop everlasting friendships, independence and confidence. They are moulding into the perfect Girls’ High girls. This year, the boarders have unlocked their full potential, especially the Grade 9s who have matured drastically. They are ready to take on the task of choosing subjects and to move over to School House where they will be seniors next year. It has been a blessing to watch them grow from last year. HOSTELS SCHOOL HOUSE The biggest challenge I faced has been learning to exercise my leadership in a hostel I was not familiar with and to find a way to adjust to the unexpected change. On that day, I remember Nkateko saying to me, "Don’t worry Kgabo. I got you. We’re going to make it work". The excitement in her eyes put me at ease and made me feel safe in accepting my position. 2022 was a blessing in disguise. The teachers were very welcoming as well as the boarders. Through accepting my leadership in School House, I created bonds and sisterhood. I learnt that everything happens for a reason and that it wasn’t just a coincidence that I was placed here. Newspaper Fashion Show will always be one of my best memories. The preparations start with choosing a theme to preparing our outfits at the last minute to freestyling our performance. This tradition has always helped in bringing each grade together despite the many differences that they encounter. I always admire how our hostel traditions have played a role in uniting everyone. It has been an honour to lead and watch everyone grow. It has been a privilege to be the Deputy-head of School House. I would like the teachers and the boarders to know that their on-going support has been my strength. "All for one and one for all, because at the end of the day whether we win or lose together, we will always be a team." In everything that we’ve done as a hostel, we’ve always shown that we are a team. SPORT Being an athlete is more than just talent and skill. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to turn your talent and skills into something that will make you a star one day. Usain Bolt said, “Train hard, turn up, run your best and the rest will take care of itself.” The PHSG Athletics Team, under the care and support of the school and especially Mrs Andrade and Ms Robbertse were able to come back after the very stagnant time of the Covid-19 pandemic and show everyone that they have still got it! Even though we faced some personal losses this season, most of the girls improved as the season progressed, gained experience and are a step closer to success. It was not easy going to practice four times a week after a long day of school and the thoughts of assignments, tests, etc being due but the dedication of the girls led them to athletics practice every afternoon. Our athletics coach, Coach Kenny, is our number one push when it came to making sure we were ready for the meetings. Coach never just lets us stay average but rather, he pushed us to be the best athletes we could be. Coach trained us as if we were Olympic athletes and that inspired us to be more than who we are. He pushed us to be the best at all times. Even though athletics was exhausting, what was the most exciting part about being a part of the PHSG Athletics Team is that we were able to have fun and enjoy the joys of being an athlete, competing together as sisters as well as competing with our brother school, PBHS. Thanks to the matrics as well as the seniors who were able to be an example to those who were competing for the first time after Covid-19. The Athletics Team made the job of being captain very easy for me as they were respectful and ready to do what was expected of them. The PHSG team always cleaned up after themselves when we were away and showed respect to all. I am extremely proud to have been captain of such a beautiful and determined team. Wishing nothing but success. Never, ever give up! SPORT Basketball is a sport that requires a lot of discipline, passion, patience and teamwork. All these traits lead to a physically and mentally strong player who contributes to the success of the team. Not playing matches, not being recognised as a team and not having a first team kit was really discouraging at first but that only motivated us to work harder to attend all practice sessions to improve our skills. No matter how demanding it got, the girls never gave up. All of that paid off when we came second in the Tshwane League. These girls made a name for our Basketball Team after almost two years of not playing the sport. They bounced right back as winners. It took a lot of patience as some players had to revisit the fundamentals and we had to move at one pace. No team member was left behind. The love we have for the sport brought us closer despite our differences. Being Basketball Captain was the highlight of my high school experience. I thank all the basketball managers as well as Ms Rankapole for organising everything and making sure all the girls were prepared, as well as Coach Nolwazi and Coach KG for instilling love and passion for the sport in us and never giving up on us. Lastly the players who have made my year an unforgettable year, I thank you for making me your captain. You have taught me a lot and were there through thick and thin times. I wish you all the best in the future and hope your love for the sport never dies. We made it, girls. WE made it. All the tears, sweat and pain paid off. Remember to award yourself after working hard. No matter the score, you’re always a winner.
