Comment from the Acting Headmistress

Mrs Karen du Toit

2014 has been a year of change for the staff and girls of Pretoria High School for Girls.

In February we proudly opened our own state-of-the-art Astro annual conference in Grahamstown. Our headgirl, Tsholofelo

in the Western Mounted Games also received her Gauteng
colours. Basketball also continues to go from strength to
strength and the Athletics Team were placed third in the
annual Inter-High competition in October. Our team of
young debaters once again acquitted themselves well under
the able guidance of Mrs Cÿrus and Mr Smit.
The standard of the house plays, written, directed and produced
by the girls was again exceptionally high. The many hours of
coaching by Ms Russell and Ms Dugmore were rewarded by
the entertaining plays enjoyed by all. Our annual Night of
the Proms was another successful evening, dedicated to Mrs
McNair this time. Mrs B du Toit and the Music Department
went to a lot of trouble arranging music that included many
of Mrs McNair’s favourite songs and with a slide show
portraying her life in pictures and photographs. Many in the
audience paid tribute to our fine outgoing headmistress. We
managed to persuade her to be the Valediction guest speaker
and we kept this as a surprise for the Grade 12s.
Our school hosted the Four Schools’ Concert at Afrikaanse
Hoër Seunskool and we appreciate the hospitality offered by
Dr Pierre Edwards and his staff. This year Citadel, a wealth
management company, expressed their interest in nurturing
cultural talent amongst the youth in Pretoria and sponsored the
Four Schools’ Concert. We are appreciative of their generosity
and look forward to a long standing partnership with them.
We also started and hosted the first Four Schools’ Public
Speaking competition. The orchestra and choirs continued to
perform well and the choir won a Gold certification at the
National ATKV finals in Pretoria.
The grade 12s of 2014 achieved exceptionally well. There
were 274 candidates who achieved a 100% pass with 93,7%
qualifying to apply to study for a Bachelor’s degree. Sharon
Ellman, the top achiever in the school, achieved nine
distinctions. Bontle Moatshe also achieved nine distinctions,
including 100% for Mathematics. Annie Oppler was the top
candidate for History in Gauteng, achieving 99%. Three of
our matrics, Holly-Anne Thompson, Camille Samson and
Celia Yeung, were placed in the top ten for CAT in Gauteng.
The overall results of the grade 12s placed PHSG in fourth
place in Gauteng. We are very proud of this achievement and
congratulate the girls on their fine results.
Thank you to the committed academic, administrative,
grounds and hostel staff who all worked tirelessly during the
past year - the success of our school is due to your dedication
and loyalty. Thank you to the Governors who assist with
their professional advice and support. The many extra hours
that they willingly put into the school are greatly appreciated.
Without their generous support we could not function as
effectively as we do.

Farewell Mrs McNair

Farewell Mrs McNair

A TRIBUTE TO PENNY McNAIR
I have been asked to contribute something to the magazine on the retirement
of our Headmistress, Penny McNair.
It is an honour for me to do so.
I am not going to deal with Penny’s history, her years at the school, the difference
she made to it. Others will, I am sure, do that.
I am going to speak on a more personal level of my experience with Penny over
the three years that I operated in partnership with her as, respectively, governing
body chairman and headmistress.
What impressed me so hugely about Penny? I think I can single out three
things: her ability to manage people, her wisdom, and her solicitude for
the girls.
Her ability to manage people? If you head up any school, let alone the largest
girls’ school in the country, you have to manage people. Penny did that. She did
it with aplomb. Sometimes imperiously (as I think befits PHSG more than any
other school!), but always effectively. She made the school work.
Wisdom? Running a school like PHSG requires decisions to be made. All of
the time. Penny wasn’t afraid to take decisions. She knew that those decisions
would, in the nature of things, not always be correct but she had the wisdom
to make the correct decision by far – most of the time – to decide wisely, and
to do so without fear.
Having a wise woman at the head of this school was critical. And we had that.
Finally, her solicitude for the girls.
In the nature of things, Penny and I would have to discuss and deal with
disciplinary issues which are never pleasant. (Mostly Penny would deal with
the matter, and tell me about it.) Penny had no relish for it - which is a good
thing - but she knew it had to be tackled and tackled well, which is also a good
thing. But what always struck me is her solicitude for the girls themselves. She
always (and I mean always) appreciated that nothing happens in a vacuum, that
effect has a cause, and that discipline is a two-way street. If harsh consequences
were required, they occurred, but always with an understanding that there
was a cause, and that the purpose of the process was to guide one back to a
better path.
I keep in touch with Penny from time to time, updating her on what is happening.
Penny spoke at the matric valedictory to the young woman for whom she did so
much and whose futures will be influenced by her leadership.
We will replace Penny, and will go on from strength to strength – because we
must. But we will always dearly miss her, and PHSG will always be a home and
a welcome-back for her.
JOHN MULLINS SC
(CHAIRMAN: GOVERNING BODY)
