This has been an exciting year for School House, starting off School House
the year with our traditional hostel stay-in weekend. While the
grade 8s attended their grade 8 camp, the rest of the hostel 91The Iris • PHSG 1902–2014
enjoyed a trip to Menlyn and on the Saturday night the whole
hostel reunited for our annual newspaper fashion show.
School House’s aim this year was to bring back hostel spirit
and in order to achieve this, the matric group put together a
mission statement which outlined exactly what steps each girl
needed to take in order to make that happen.
We thank the boarder parents for giving us the opportunity of
experiencing a night at the theatre when we attended Matthew
Ribnick’s one-man show. This was a wonderful experience for
all and a day none of us will forget.
Inter-hostel activities were one of the highlights of the year and
we had the pleasure of competing with North Lodge in inter-
hostel volleyball and soccer matches. The hostel olympics, held
at Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, was a new event which was
added to our hostel calendar for the year. For the event North
Lodge and School House merged as a whole and we represented
our school and won the prize for the most spirited hostel.
An enormous thank you goes to my vice, Cindy Cherry, for
her immense support. Running this hostel without her would
have been impossible and words alone cannot describe how
much she has done for me.
This hostel would not have been able to reach its full potential
without the generals, our matrics! Due to circumstances this
year, the matrics had to take on a lot more duties than usual.
Their willingness to lend a helping hand, even when not asked,
was a quality which made this group as strong as it was. They
were real role models for future matric groups.
To our hostel moms, Mrs Lamb, Mrs van Niekerk, Mrs
Ford, Ms Dugmore, Ms Greenwood and Ms Dorlas, thank
you for the countless hours spent on hostel duty. Although
we did not always show it, we appreciated all the love and
support you provided, both on and off duty. Thank you for
always believing in me and guiding me every step of the way.
Last, but not least, I thank every single School House lady
for upholding all that School House stands for. This year
would not have been as successful without their co-operation
and for this I am truly thankful. Good luck to all of you and
especially to the new head of hostel.
