Lucky Lucy is based on a small holding on the N7 and has been running since 2010. This animal welfare foundation is non profit and relies on
donations in order to continue their good work. It is pro-life and pro-quality of life and animals at the centre are well cared for. Social upliftment
and education forms part of their work and volunteers can join in walking dogs or socialising with cats on a Saturday morning. Rehoming animals
forms a large part of the work as well as giving the necessary medical attention where needed. Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for the voiceless and
opposes any form of animal cruelty.

The Africana Library of the late
J. S. F. (Frikkie) Botha

It started with an edition of Flavius Josephus. As a child, Frikkie Botha
convinced his aunts to allow him to be the custodian of this family
heirloom and that ignited a lifelong passion for books and all that
surrounds them.

Throughout his life and various diplomatic postings Botha continued
adding to his collection. One component of the library that clearly
reflects this is the number of North American books or imprints with
significant South African content, which were acquired while Botha was
posted in Washington D.C. This adventure also permitted him to make
a contribution to Africana bibliography that up to that point lacked a
number of North American titles.

Botha’s foreign service posting in Japan affected his collection in
a different way. In this case the Japanese influence is clear in the
materials and techniques used to restore books. Few Africana libraries
can boast of books with washi end papers or washi covered slipcases.

Once Botha settled in Cape Town a different aspect in his life as a
bibliophile came to the fore. He became a very active member of the
Friends of the South African Library, but was also a driving force in
establishing the Society of Bibliophiles in Cape Town and its associated
publication, Philobiblon.

The final facet of Botha’s library displays his role as restorer and
preserver. Many of the books in his library would not have survived
the ravages of time without his conservatory intervention. Recasing a
book with split hinges, repairing a tear in a map, finding a missing plate,
these are all activities that ensured the longevity of many books that
otherwise would not have survived. - L. R.

Weller, N. et al. "Tribute to Frikkie Botha", Philobiblon: Journal of the Society of
Bibliophiles in Cape Town, Series Three, Number 22 (December 2005).

George French Angas (1822-1886)
As a child George French Angas dreamed of Africa and finally travelled to the region after the
success of his Australian and New Zealand works. During his two year stay he saw Africa in its
“bold reality,”1 and he found that "[e]ach spot, each varied region, possesses an interest of its own,
- an individual charm or terror altogether separate from the rest: thus it is with Africa”2.
The combination of the artist-adventurer French’s “soul burn[ing] for something”3 and his
scientific predisposition resulted in a beautiful travelogue with illustrations of the tribes of
Southern Africa. He “… endeavored to give… some remarks on the history, character, and customs
of the various African tribes… [trusting that] indulgent readers… may be enabled to form a more
correct knowledge of its singular inhabitants than they have hitherto possessed.”4

271 - DETAIL

Captain William Cornwallis Harris (1807 – 1848) - PORTRAITS OF THE GAME AND WILD ANIMALS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
This rare first edition is “[o]ne of the most important and valuable of the large folio works on South African fauna.”1. A work situated at the
intersection of science and art. The coloured engravings not only display beautiful depictions of fauna, but are based on numerous measurements
to ensure correct scale. The accompanying text is detailed in describing each animal’s characteristics, appearance and so forth. The book mirrors
Harris’s joy of the hunt “ … over the broad bosom of the flower-decked prairies of Southern Africa, or engaged in “chance medley” with the
four-footed giants that divide among themselves the empire of that hunter’s Elysium.”2 - L. R.
