Dawson, A. British Museum: Masterpieces of
Wedgewood, London: British Museum Press,
1995,illustrated on p.35, figure 26

R 6 000 - R 8 000

This piece forms part of the V&A Collection
and was modelled by John Flaxman Sen.
(1726 - 1795) in 1776 and manufactured by
Josiah Wedgewood and Sons in circa 1840.
John Flaxman Sen. was one of a number
of plaster makers in London who supplied
Bentley and Wedgewood with models and
casts, usually but not always copies from
classical, French or Italian sources.

“The plasters are preserved at the
Wedgewood Museum and may be based
on a French source by Claude Michel, called
Clodion (1738-1814), a sculptor best known
for his terracotta figures and bas reliefs. The
basalt vases are known as the ‘wine and
water ewers’ or the ewers ‘Sacred to Bacchus’
and ‘Sacred to Neptune’ (Fig. 26), the satyr
symbolising wine, and the triton riding on a
dolphin representing water. They are amongst
the most elaborately modelled pieces ever
produced by the Wedgewood factory. Both
bear the Wedgewood & Bentley mark which
occurs in an usual form on the water ewer
(Fig. 27). The shape was popular during the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in various
materials including silver and even malachite.
The Wedgewood vases were made in jasper
ware in the late eighteenth century, and in
majolica (lead-glazed earthenware) and bone
china in the nineteenth century.”

the oval rim adorned with patterned lappets Ferdinand Barbedienne was one of the most successful and recognised bronze metalworkers

A MINTONS PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE TWIN HANDLED VASE AND
COVER, ATTRIBUTED TO L. SOLON (1835 – 1913)

the baluster-shaped body decorated in relief overall with gilt
floral and leaf and star patterns against an olive green ground,
a cameo pattern cherub to the front flying through a ring of
fire, wreath-shaped handles, the loose cover surmounted by a
cone finial, gilt crowned Globe and impressed marks, shape no.
3271, various cyphers including swan cypher 1895, unsigned
25cm high including cover

R 15 000 - R 18 000

Marc-Louis Émanuel Solon (1835 – 1913) was a French
porcelain decorator and the most famous practitioner of the
pâte-sur-pâte technique, working for Sèvres from 1857 to 1870
and then in England for the Mintons factory from 1870 to 1904.
The date cyphers puts this lot into the correct time frame for
being produced by Mintons whilst Solon was working there.

Although this piece is not signed, it seems that it may well
have had a companion piece, illustrated below. As one can
see the decoration is very similar to the front and the subject
matter corresponds to Solon’s motifs. He favoured classical
subjects inspired by the Renaissance art world and usually
worked in white against a dark ground. The twin handled vases
and other decorative objects that were produced as pairs
very rarely depict the exact same scene in the pâte-sur-pâte
technique, whilst the shape and other aspects of design are
identical, as is the case here.

The companion piece as illustrated Fig. 1 - Companion Piece,
in figure 1 is signed L. Solon and lacking cover
depicts a putti flying through a
hoop surrounded by swallows.
The lot on auction depicts a putti
flying through a hoop of fire or
flames. This would be typical,
as the subject matter though
never an exact copy would be
similar. The reverse of both pieces
is identical in the atypical gilt
styling as well as the shape and
form. It is not unusual that one
piece is signed and the other not,
hence the belief that this lot was
a companion to another Solon
piece and most likely the one
illustrated below. The companion
piece was sold by Christies in 1998
and resurfaced again later. Solon
was widely acclaimed during his
life time and his work commanded
high prices. - S-L. F.

717 Esias Bosch studied at the University of Witwatersrand and at the Johannesburg
School of Art before winning a three year scholarship to study ceramics in Britain.
A LARGE CERAMIC Returning to South Africa he was a pioneer of studio pottery at his Die Randjie
‘NAMAQUALAND’ LUSTRE TILE, studio. In particular, his large panels and tiles are fascinating and impressive works of
ESIAS BOSCH art. Inspiration to produce these came from seeing the Keramion Museum, Germany
(1923 - 2010) clad in large Buchtal tiles. Esias imported some of these, however they were glazed
and, using an angle grinder, he ground the glaze off in order to experiment in his
depicting fields of flowers in bloom studio. Rebuilding his kiln to fit these items, he worked with lustre tiles and then
against a backdrop of mountain eventually experimented with clay tiles built up in layers and decorated with ceramic
ranges and sky stains and glazed, thereby giving the illusion of depth and a painterly like quality.
160 by 124cm Examples of both were housed in buildings such as the Vineyard Hotel, Cape Town,
Wesbank Building, Braamfontein and in the old departure hall of what is now Oliver
R 250 000 - R 350 000 Tambo Airport. Evidence of his inspiration of Claude Monet and Pierre Bonnard, can
be seen in the themes chosen for his panel and tile pieces. His exhibition of large
tiles in 1983 in Hanover catapulted him to success. - S-L. F.

Hylton Nel resides in the Karoo and has a Fine
Art degree from Rhodes University. He has
reached critical acclaim not only as a potter,
but also as an artist. Combining humour and
satire amongst other qualities, he manages
to produce rather unexpected and unusual
pieces. The cat and kitten in question have
expressive features most likely based on
human emotion. It shows Nel’s brilliance at
being able to embue his felines with human
like qualities, which are universally understood.
