158 Let Us Harness the Power of Our Minds (By Piermauro Catarinella) Our mind is a powerful tool that empowers us to achieve significant results. It influences our behaviors, and our decisions can yield positive or negative impacts. However, we have the choice to refrain from utilizing our minds, leaving them idle, absent, and incapable of functioning. We determine the use of our minds through the concept of “free will”. We have the ability to employ it positively by fostering respect and love for others. Conversely, we also have the option to channel it towards planning wars or crimes against humanity. When confronted with acts of violence, our minds have the capacity to determine our course of action. We may choose to remain silent or turn a blind eye to the violence, opting not to intervene or aid the victims, or even ignore the violence altogether. Conversely, we can choose courage, standing up for the victims, offering assistance, and vocalizing our outrage against those perpetrating violence and causing harm. Upon witnessing a genocide, our minds should not passively accept it, nor should they ignore or forgive those responsible. Confronting a genocide compels us to react, to remain vigilant, and to stand in solidarity with the victims. When innocent children are senselessly killed, and their land is ravaged by bombs, the human mind should be stirred with compassion for the tragic loss of young lives, vehemently rejecting such barbaric violence. Individuals guided by noble values ought to unite, standing together to condemn the perpetrators of these heinous crimes. When individuals face oppression in their homeland, those with a sense of humanity and justice cannot remain silent but should speak out against violations of international law. It is important to note that people with noble values do not align with the description provided by the English philosopher John Locke. Individuals who refuse to acknowledge acts of horrific violence against children, the elderly, and civilians are often those who stand to gain personal benefits from such actions or lend support to the perpetrators of these crimes. In conclusion, how does your mind respond to extreme violence against innocent people?

160 Mak Dah’s Beef Floss (By Latisha Asmaak Shafie) My Mak Dah was a woman who rarely expressed her feelings even to her only child who lived in the capital city. She was a stoic indomitable person. However, every time she visited her daughter, she would prepare beef floss. Beef floss was her daughter's favourite dish. Whenever she said, I am going to Kuala Lumpur next week. I knew the drill. Every time Mak Dah visited the city, she recruited me in her venture. The two of us prepared the beef floss with me complaining that she could prepare other easier dish and with her being adamant that it was her child's favourite dish. It was a tedious task for a kid like me, but she was happy. She bought the best part of meat and we boiled the meat in the traditional pot for a long time till the meat was tender. Then, we separated its strand by hand which took time. It was hot and time-consuming. When she was not looking, I put some in my mouth. It was delicious! Then I helped her to mince the onion, garlic and ginger. Mak Dah let me stir it until it dried. In return, I got to eat her sought-after dish first. Then, we packed the serunding in containers for her to bring to the city. She proudly smiled when her daughter’s city friends complimented her beef floss. That was the day Mak Dah’s beef floss magically disappeared. In the beginning, I was puzzled until I saw her daughter showing off industrial produced beef floss packages and proudly told her mother that she did not have to do the hard work. Mak Dah was crestfallen. She tasted her competitor’s work and I could listen to her muffled complaint ...not as delicious as mine Mak Dah took the hint. She refused to cook her beef floss. She said it was too taxing. I thought that was the end of the story. One fine day, she introduced her new signature dish – Beef Cooked in Spicy Dark Sauce to her loved ones. This time, I dared not say anything. I would not want this dish to vanish like her Beef floss. Now her both dishes remain in my memory as she passed away a year ago. Years ago, I understood Mak Dah’s love was expressed through the dishes. Sometimes we battle with the hurt of not being loved. We look hard to find love when it is right in front of us. I find mine in the dishes. I love you, Mak Dah! I know I am loved by you. What is your story? Are you loved? Look harder, it might be so visible in front of you.

163 Take Your Umbrella and Go to The Night Market When It Rains (By Angelina Ranjethamoney R. Vijayarajoo) This is a night market scene on a rainy day. It shows the night market traders packing to go home and looking dejected. This is a film reflecting a father’s advice to his daughter – mainly to go and buy goods on a rainy day during the Night Market. Have you ever wondered what it is like for night market traders on a rainy day? Well, I never gave it a thought until papa, my wise and empathetic father, spoke to me about this. He spoke on the many other topics of conversation that have made me aware and proactive in assisting countless people, who struggle in life and go unnoticed. Papa told me that night market traders either work in the day or prepare for their work in the day, for their sales at night. When it rains, they have no sales and all their work towards the night market sales drop to nothing or a minimal amount. Papa then spoke about perishable items – food…. He said that people will not go out to buy on a rainy day, period. What would happen to the goods on sale at the night market when it rains? What more perishable items? As for the non-perishable items, these are not a total loss but the end result is the same – no sales. As for the perishable items, these go to waste if not given to neighbours and friends. It is not always convenient to give away food to neighbours and friends either. It was then that I was sensitized to such traders. Next, my father said to me, “Please take your umbrella on a rainy day and go to the night market and buy what you can, especially the perishable items”. From then on, on rainy days, you will find me with an umbrella, walking into the night market, along the rows and looking to buy perishable items mainly. Much effort has gone into food preparation and to think that all that would go to waste and the lost resources resulting from this. I am usually a lonely person on such trails, but I try to keep to this schedule as I think of what papa said. The night market traders near my home, know me by now. Just that lately, if I had a cough or cold, I would struggle to go out in the rain, though under the protection of the umbrella. Still, papa’s words of wisdom and advice to his daughter, have not and will not go to waste. I hold so dear to my heart his words and how I try to play a role, in my small way to assist them. If not financially, to uplift their spirits.
