14 FUNDING

How to pay for your course

Going to college is an investment for
your future. Plan ahead carefully so you
can work out the best way to manage
your money while you study. Allow time for
your application for support to be processed.

? How much will it cost?

The main costs are:
Tuition fees: the fees charged by us to teach you
Living expenses: your accommodation, food, clothing etc

? How will I pay?

Every student will be different. Although most of the courses in the courses section of the website advertise a
fee, you may not have to pay the full fee depending on your individual circumstances. For example, if you
intend to study a full-time, further education course, your fees may be paid for you if you are a Scottish or EU
domiciled student. If you intend to study a higher education course you should apply to the appropriate
student finance agency to have your fees paid.
Please contact your college centre for funding information if you are studying a part time course.

? What about living costs?

Depending on your personal circumstances, you may qualify for financial assistance in the form of Education
Maintenance Allowance (EMA), bursary, loan or grant.

Your letter of acceptance from the college will contain information about how to apply for further education
funding online. If you are studying a higher education course, please visit the appropriate student finance
agency website to apply for a student loan.

Don’t delay. Apply for funding as soon as you can so that you know how much
you may be entitled to when you start your course.

18 WHAT EMPLOYERS SAY

What employers say

West Highland College UHI has built up close contacts with many employers over the years.
This cooperation is invaluable for many of our students who are required to do work experience as
part of their course. These experiences enrich our students’studies and their understanding of the
workplace and many go on to successful employment with the business they have got to know
after they have finished their time at college.

“ MandyCameron,Carr
Gomm Service Manager
(Lochaber & Skye):

“Working in partnership with West Highland College UHI has
been hugely successful for Carr Gomm as we have benefitted
from four successful applicants to our organisation which was our
key aim with this project. It has also helped the organisation to
form a strong link with the college and it has helped with our
ongoing promotion of the care sector being a career that young

people can get involved with. By employing students
undertaking their health and social care studies we know that

we are not only gaining employees with an interest in the
sector but that they are also well educated in both the
theoretical and practical side of care work.”

Campbell Grant,
Sitekit Ltd

"As a Skye-based software SME, selling throughout the
UK, I can confirm that the scarcity of appropriately skilled
staff is by far the most limiting factor in business growth and
job creation locally. In fact it is an acknowledged UK-wide

economic development problem.

The future is digital and virtual. We desperately need more
Computer Scientists and Software Engineers (not merely

computer users) if this country is to compete in the global
market for digital services. The education sector needs
to adapt faster to the changing world of work and

West Highland College UHI are leading the
way in this."
