ity business and Swiss-Belhotel International philosophy.

SWISS-BELHOTEL INTERNATIONAL | ZEST HOTEL INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT’S DIARY | 11

DECEMBER Dear Team,
2012
I have decided to write Christmas Reflections which will be my last President’s
WEEK 1-2 Reflections for 2011.
I am sitting on a train travelling from Hefei, China to Wuhan, China as part of
another busy week before I arrive back in New Zealand on the afternoon of
24th December to spend Christmas with most of my family. My eldest son,
Matthew who lives in Tokyo with his beautiful Mongolian wife and two lovely
young daughters unfortunately cannot get to New Zealand for Christmas.
Just as my weekly message to you all are my reflections of the past week,
Christmas and the end of the year is a time of reflection and a time of commit-
ment to the next year.
But it is also a time of renewal of ones Passion and Professionalism.
2011 has been a tremendous year for Swiss-Belhotel International and we are
well positioned for a great and record year next year 2012.
The huge lift of the 2011 GMs’ Conference I can feel is taking us into an
exciting 2012.
Every year has highs and lows and it is important that we handle the challeng-
es with the same Passion and Professionalism that we handle the highs.
This week:
- Tuesday, 20th December: After a very positive Board Meeting at Swiss-Bel-
hotel Changchun, I left a very positive hotel which will easily have the best
year in the history of that hotel. The team is so motivated and determined and
it was good to see General Manager Josef Woelfle looking so well after his
huge heart operation a few weeks earlier.
- I arrived in Hefei at almost mid-night after leaving (losing) my luggage in
Shanghai. You cannot check luggage between flights in China!!!!
Great to be met at Swiss-Belhotel Hefei by Mr. Bremi and his friendly team.
Swiss-Belhotel Hefei has only been in operation 11 months and is already
exceeding its budget and exceeding its market share – a tremendous result
under challenging conditions.
The potential of this new hotel is tremendous and I see huge results for 2012.
- Wednesday, 21st December:
* Morning: Meeting with owner and senior staff of Swiss-Belhotel Hefei. Very
positive.
* Afternoon: Visited Swiss-Belhotel Hualun Hefei - our second hotel in Hefei
that we have been managing for over 5 years. A challenging operation but
General Manager Steven Shu is leading his team well and also achieving
record results for the year.
Had a positive meeting with the Owners Representative Mr. Ma.
- Thursday, 22nd December: Took the fast train from Hefei to Wuhan.

12 | PRESIDENT’S DIARY SWISS-BELHOTEL INTERNATIONAL | ZEST HOTEL INTERNATIONAL

Great to be back at Swiss-Belhotel Lotus Lake with GM Gloria Llamas
and the friendly staff. This is a hugely challenging operation with its remote
location. Still no real highway to the hotel and one and a half hours from the
railways station.
Hotel owned now by the local government so some interesting business
philosophies to handle.
- Friday, 23rd December: Flew back to Hong Kong for an intensive day with
the team and flew to New Zealand in the evening.
Again team,
- Thank you for your hard work.
- Thank you for your loyalty.
- Thank you for your Passion and Professionalism.
Footnote – Interesting – Bernie, the Swiss St. Bernard Dog which we intro-
duce at the 2011 General Managers’ Conference has been a huge hit. We are
now almost out of stock and will now be placing a new order.
Bernie will be a key give-away for Swiss-Belhotel International and the hotels
as everyone wants one and they do not mind paying for it. Even when I give
out Bernie at Board Meetings the Owners Reps love them and want more.
Please let Bonnie or Linie know your orders.
PS:
Mr. Bremi of Swiss-Belhotel Hefei got very upset in that he ordered 60 dogs
but by the time I got to his hotel I only had 20 left for him!!!
My apologies Gilbert.
And
Congratulations to Alex, GM of Swiss-Belhotel Golden Sand Resort & Spa, his
wife gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Welcome to the world, baby Christian…

Wishing you all a Happy Season’s Greetings & a very Happy New Year. Look
forward to an even more exciting and successful year in 2012.

JANUARY Dear Team,
2012
Chinese New Year continued.
WEEK 4 - Monday, 23rd January:
- Chinese New Year.
- Flew back to Hong Kong from Singapore.
- Tuesday – Thursday, 24th – 26th January: In Hong Kong. Catching up on
administration and emails with the Hong Kong office closed.
- Friday – Saturday, 27th - 28th January: In Macau.
- My first look around the hotel scene for some time. Amazing developments.
All hotels and the city packed due to Chinese New Year.
Turnover of the casinos absolutely amazing – now 5 times higher than Las
Vegas.
Hotels incredible. Developments incredible. Swiss-Belhotel International will
look into opportunities but hugely competitive with the big names scooping
the top hotels and the rest running themselves.
Hotel concepts amazing. However as usual service is challenging and there is
huge inconsistency in service even in the five star hotels.
Staff attitude a problem.
- Swiss-Belhotel Mangga Besar had a very challenging incident in their hotel
on Friday, 27th involving the Police and the death of a visitor.
Chris MacLean and his team handled a very difficult operational and public
relations process incredibly well and showed real professionalism.
Well done Chris and your team.
Appreciated the hourly updates to myself and Emmanuel Guillard. Tre-
mendous crisis management. Showed real team work and the professional
support of each other in the hotel management team and the support of
Swiss-Belhotel International. All operations must review their crisis man-
agement procedures. Instructions will come out from Regional Offices if not
already in place.
- Sunday, 29th January: Back in Hong Kong. Meeting with developers and
hotel potential opportunities in China.
- Monday, 30th January: Working in Hong Kong Office and now off to Mer-
auke, Indonesia for opening of the Swiss-Belhotel Merauke on
Tuesday, 31st January. 4 hours flight to Jakarta then an all night 7 hours flight
to East Papua.
- I am in Indonesia for the week.
Generally, business across the Group ending the month very positive. Growth
of business looks strong.

SWISS-BELHOTEL INTERNATIONAL | ZEST HOTEL INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT’S DIARY | 19

MAY THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
2012
CATHAY PACIFIC IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE AIRLINES
WEEK 3-4 THEIR ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN FOCUSES ON PEOPLE AND THEY PUT A
SMALL BUSINESS CARD SIZED PROMOTION CARD ON THE MEAL TRAY
WHEN THEY DELIVER IT ON BOARD WITH A SIMPLE NOTE
THIS WEEK I WAS IMPRESSED AS THE MESSAGE EXPRESSED IS THE
SAME MESSAGE THAT I AM TRYING TO COMMUNICATE ON ”BEHAVIOUR”
TO EACH OTHER; TO OUR GUESTS; TO OUR OWNERS; TO OUR BOSSES
SO I QUOTE FROM CATHAY PACIFIC FOR MY THOUGHT OF THE WEEK:

“SERVICE HAS TO COME FROM THE HEART”
“DEALING WITH PEOPLE IS NEVER GOING TO BE SMOOTH SAILING
ALL THE TIME”
“ITS THE APPROACH YOU TAKE THAT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE
TO THE OUTCOME”

THINK HOW YOU COMMUNICATE AND RESPECT EACH OTHER – IT IS
CRITICAL TO YOUR SUCCESS OF WHAT THEY WILL DO FOR YOU
MOST PROBLEMS I HAVE TO SORT OUT WITH EXECUTIVES; WITH
HOTELS; WITH OWNERS - IS ALL A RESULT OF HOW WE COMMUNICATE
AND WORK TOGETHER
USUALLY A LACK OF RESPECT; LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM;
LACK OF MANAGEMENT SKILLS; ALL OFTEN BUILT ON ARROGANCE AND
SELF IMPORTANCE
THE EASIEST PERSON TO CHANGE IS YOURSELF

Dear Team,

R. Zimmermann, detail of this visit in next weeks reflections.
As I keep saying, we are on the move.
Developments are coming, hotels operating well, but need more drive to
achieve and exceed budgets, as owners become more and more demanding.
Remember, we are a MANAGEMENT COMPANY – so we must manage and
produce results, otherwise why do Owners need us!!!!!!
Thanks for your hard work and dedication. We need it to succeed. I need your
hard work and support to achieve.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

IF YOU HAVE TO TELL SOMEONE HOW GOOD YOU ARE, THEN YOU HAVE
A PROBLEM
RESULTS WILL ALWAYS CONFIRM HOW GOOD YOU ARE
SO OFTEN PEOPLE ARE SO BUSY TELLING ME HOW GOOD THEY ARE
OR WHAT THEY HAVE ACHIEVED AND I JUST LOOK AT THE RESULTS OR
LOOK AT STAFF TURNOVER OR LOOK AT GUEST COMMENTS
AND THE ANSWER IS SO CLEAR
