Brahms s-a manifestat permanent gi ca un credincios protestant, pen-
tru care lectura de fiecare seard a Bibliei devenise o necesitate spiri-
tuald. A.stfel, in cursul aniior 1859-1860, in care incepe sd se afirme
creafia corald, apar gi primele lucrdri izvorite din educafia sa reli-
gioasd protestantd : PsclmuJ ai XHI-iea pentru cor de Iemei pe trei
voci 6i orgd sau pian (op. 27), cdruia i-au urmat ceie doud Motete
pentru cor mixt a cappella (op. 29) qi Cinfecul sacru pentru cor tnixt
6r orgd scu pion (op.30).
In siilul a cappella, inaugurat de Brahms in prima versiune a
corurilor Cintecele lt4ariei, sint compuse doar cele doud. Motete pen'
tru cor mixt Ia cinci voci. Primul, inspirat de textul unui imn protes-
tant datind din secolul al XVI-Iea, erste conceput in spiritul muzicii
lui Bach, atit ca formd (Coral gi Fugb,), cit li ca elaborare polifonicd.
Aportul brahmsian apare insd in inventivitatea prelucrdrii motivelor
(preluate din Coral) de-a lungul muzicii din Fugd, CeI de-al doilea
Motct, inspirat de versetul al 12-lea al Psalmului LI, se remarcd prin-
tr-o tratare mai liberd a vocilor, cu deosebire in Fuga finald {Allegro)'
care contrasteazd cu miqcarea lentd a celor trei sectiuni anterioare
(maepdnalinnutetd-voaitnidnasnotebiieesteptreeasssivtoilu-l-ui andante) Ei cu scriitura acestora,
de traclifie.
Concepfia stilisticd sevel5 domind 9i muzica celorlalle doud lu-
criri relrgioase fPsalmul {il X{il-lea Ei Cintecul Scrcru), concepfie co-
respunzdtoare esteticii protestante. Dar peste sobrietatea polifoniei
vocale gi peste expririrarea arhaicd adecvatd fondului biblic (in Psalm)
gi tertrilui h-ri Faul Flemming, datind din prima jumdtate a secolului
al XVII-lea (in Cinlecul Sacrui pot fi observate evidente emancipdri
in tratarea partidei instrumentale (o196 sau pian).
Comentatorii creafiei lui Brahms nu au reugit sd fixeze cu rigu-
roziiaie cronologia tuturor iucrdrilor vocale aparlinind acestei pe-
rioacle ce prececle stabilirea lui Brahms Ia Viena, prezentindu-le fie
dupd caracterul lor (religioase sau plofane), fie dupd ordinea publi-
caiii 9i inscrierii ior in lista de opusuri. Cert este cd de-a lungul

nada pentru orchestrd in la ntajor i se cintd la New York, iar Vorja-'
liile pentru picn pe o iemd. de Hdnciel, in interpretatea Clarei Schu-
manlt, igi impun categoric valoarea Ia Leipzig Si Paris.
Aplauzeie publicuiui 9i eloqliile ptesei au reugit sd redreseze
echilibrui sufletesc al tindruiui Brahms, pe atunci umbrit de conse-
cinleie publicdrii manifestuiui din primdvara anului 1860. La relaxarea
sa spirituald a contrii:uit in mare mdsurd gi intensa muncd de creafie
clin linlqtea locuinlei sale din cartierul lJamm al llamburgului, car-
tier in care compozitorul igi petrecuse vacantele in perioada detmol-
dezd qi in care igi fixese sediul principal la sfir$itul anului 1860. Acolo
a cleat, unul dupd altul, cvartetele pentru instrumente de coarde qi
pian, ca gi primele lieduri din ciclui Frumooso Magelona, ciclul desd-
virgit ulterior 9i publicat in anul 1865.
ln lista creafiei lui Brahms, in care figureazd 24 de lucrdri pen-
tru formaf ii dr muzicd de camer6, se pot numdra trei cvartete cu
pian, prirnele doud apirirrd succesiv, cu numdrul de op. 25 gi 26, al
treilea mulr mai tlrziu, cu numdrul de op. 60. Cu toate acestea,
mai nltimrrl toc-
dintre aceste trei cvartete, Cvartetul in do minor, este
cel pe care Brahms l-a conturat gi compus mai devreme. Luctarea a
fost pornitd la Diisseldorf in anul 1855, in perioada iu cate Schumann
ili trdia ultimul an din viafd. Puternicul tragisur al muzicii acestei
creafri dezvdluie zbuciumul sufletesc aI compozitorului de 22 de ani ,
ale cdrui sentimente oscilau necruf dtor intre prietenia 9i dragostea
ce o purta Clarei Schumann. Este acea perioadd pe care comentatorii
creafiei lui Brahms o numesc ,,perioada wertheriand", marcind ast-
fel dimensiunile frdmintdrilor lui sufletegti dupii mdsura celor triite
de eroul lui Goethe.
Compozitorul a revenit in repetate rinduri asupra acestei lucriiri
in anii 1861, IBGB, ISVS incercind sd-i zdgdzuiascd
sponiane q- i asprimile. Dar cu toate retugdrile aduse ulterior, ei nu
turnultul
a reugit sd-i imprime ecltilibrul cu cate personaiitatca gi concei;|ia
sa componisticd se intregise intre timp. in anul i874, cind Brahms
