The corridor Event: Lynne mentions Bradburie’s name in front of Geoff but Geoff does not seem to recognise the name. The school library Event: Lynne discovers that all books written by William Bradburie are missing. Headmaster Velos’ office Events: 1 Geoff explains to Mr Velos his situation and asks to be disqualified from the competition. 2 Mr Velos awards the first prize to Lynne. Lynne Webbing and Geoff Bolder both enter a short story competition. Geoff wins first prize while Lynne is placed second. Later, Lynne sees the similarity between Geoff’s story and a story that she is reading, which was written by a famous author, William Bradburie. Lynne is outraged because she thinks Geoff has cheated. The next day, Lynne blurts out the author’s name in front of Geoff. Then Lynne discovers that all of the author’s books are missing from the library. She suspects Geoff has taken them all to cover up his tracks. Later, she is called to the Headmaster’s office. In the Headmaster’s office, she learns that Geoff has asked to be disqualified. He says that while he had no intention of plagiarising the story, he remembers that he had read it once and forgotten about it. Therefore, that must be where he got the idea from. Headmaster Velos then says that while there are similarities, both stories are quite different and thus there is no need to disqualify Geoff. However, this proves that Lynne’s story is more original and she deserves the first prize. Lynne is taken aback. She also begins to question if her story is indeed original, or if she too had read it somewhere. N13 Theme Evidence 1 Honesty After being accused of cheating by Lynne, Geoff goes to Mr Velos and explains what has happened instead of covering it up. 2 Integrity Geoff asks to be disqualified from the contest as soon as he realises that his story is very similar to William Bradburie’s story. 3 Friendship Despite being disappointed, Lynne graciously congratulates Geoff for winning the competition. She does not let the competition ruin their friendship. Towers Chandler, an ordinary office worker, likes to pretend that he is rich once in a while. He saves a dollar a week and on the tenth week, he goes to town in his finest clothes and eats at the best restaurants. One day, as he is about to enjoy one of these evenings in town, he knocks into Marian and causes her to sprain her ankle. Marian is dressed very plainly and so Chandler thinks she is just a shop girl. However, Chandler takes a liking to her and asks her to accompany him to dinner. They talk during dinner and Chandler tries to impress her by pretending that he is a rich man. He says that he leads a life of leisure and has no time for work. Marian is disappointed because although she likes Chandler, she prefers a man who has a career. They say goodbye and part ways. In the next scene, Marian is in her bedroom talking to her sister, Sissie. It is clear that she is actually from a wealthy family and had only gone out dressed in her servant’s clothes. She tells her sister that she knows one day she must marry. She hopes that she could find a working man whom she could love. She likes Chandler but does not like the idea that he does nothing for a living. Brace Map i-THINK Drama: A Night Out by O. N15 Conflict Chandler takes Marian out for dinner and continues his pretence of being a wealthy man. Exposition Chandler leaves his boarding house to have a memorable night out in town. Rising Action Chandler bumps into Marian which causes her to sprain her ankle. Resolution Marian thinks about Chandler but wishes that one day she could find a man who does something important with his life. Falling Action Marian comes home to a big house which suggests that she is actually a wealthy woman. Scene 3: At a restaurant • While having dinner, Chandler and Marian get along very well. • Then, Chandler tries to impress Marian by telling her that he lives a life of leisure. • This comes as a disappointment to Marian as she has always preferred a working man. Scene 4: In Marian’s bedroom • Marian comes home and it is revealed here that she is a lady of the upper class. • She is expected to marry someone from her own class but dislikes the idyllic lifestyle of the rich. • She recalls her chance encounter with Chandler and wonders if she will ever find a man who has a purpose in life. Climax It turns out that Marian prefers men who work for a living and leaves the restaurant in regret. Chandler is regretful too for not telling her the truth. N16 A Night Out 1 Do not judge a person by appearance. 2 Always be yourself. 3 Treat others the way you want to be treated. 4 We must have a purpose in life. Theme Evidence 1 Appearances can be deceiving Both Chandler and Marian do not project the image of their true selves. Chandler dresses like a wealthy man but in reality he works in an office. In contrast, Marian is from the upper class but dresses like a shop girl. 2 Ambition Chandler has ambitions to live like the rich and is willing to save up just so that he could have the experience. 3 Class distinction Most of the upper class do not have jobs to occupy their time. They live an idle life with no purpose. In contrast, the working class have to work hard in order to be able to afford the luxuries in life. 4 Honesty is the best policy Because both the main characters give false impressions of themselves, they miss an opportunity to build true friendship. Chandler may be the man that Marian is looking for but because he keeps up with his act of portraying a rich man, Marian is put off by him. The following are some suggestions on how to follow good personal hygiene habits for health. Discuss with your friends the following tips and explain how to do them. LS 2.1.2 B Now, you are talking with your friend about good hygiene. Role-play. Use the notes above to help you. Add other relevant information. LS 2.3.1 Example: A: What is good hygiene? B: Good hygiene is maintaining a clean body and practising good daily habits . A: Why do we need to have good hygiene habits? B: It helps us stay healthy and prevents the spread of diseases . A: Yes. It’s good to learn the habits early and practise them daily, so they become routine. B: How do we start? A: I suggest we start with regular baths using soap and water . B: I agree with you. It’s good to start the day clean . A: Must we practise this daily? B: Sure, we must. It’s really important to shower at least twice a day , unless you’re ill. I read somewhere that … • Good hygiene habits: cleaning our bodies well – helps prevent spread of diseases – start early – practise daily – becomes routine – includes covering your mouth and nose with a tissue (or your sleeve) when sneezing or coughing • Washing hair: 2–3 times a week – hot weather and outdoor – wash more often – too often can dry out young scalps – dandruff • Bathing: daily or more often – early morning and before bed – soap and water – wash towel regularly – change underwear regularly Personal Hygiene Habits • Brush teeth: at least twice a day or more – must brush before bed – make sure no food is stuck • Handwashing: as often as you can – especially when you go home – must wash thoroughly before and after meals – after playing or handling pets – after being with sick people – scrub well with soap for a few minutes – use hand santisers when cannot wash – soap and water washing is more effective • Nails: breeding ground for bacteria – can transfer to eyes, nose, and mouth – use good nail brush – scrub nails – keep nails short – clip weekly You can try using questions or phrases like the following: • What do we mean by good hygiene? • How can we do our part to maintain a healthy body and follow good hygiene habits? • I read/heard that … • I think we should … • I agree with you. Another thing we should do is … • We can also make sure … • You’re right. We must also remember to … • We need to … • It’s good to … • Another important suggestion is … • One important way to develop good hygiene habits is to … Conquer Eng F2_Unit1.indd 1 30/09/2023 9:20 AM BAKTI SDN. C Work in pairs. Ask about and explain or elaborate your comments. LS 2.1.1 Reading and Speaking SoW: Lesson 3 One important factor in having a healthy body is a balanced diet. Following a healthy diet has many benefits, including building strong bones, supporting muscle growth, protecting the heart, preventing diseases and staying healthy. It also helps in boosting mood, keeping healthy skin, teeth, body and eyes, maintaining a healthy weight, and helping brain development. Besides good nutrition, we need regular exercise, good hygiene habits and fresh air for our overall health and well-being. A balanced diet includes some specific healthy food groups. Eat lots of vegetables, such as leafy greens, and legumes like beans and peas as well as different coloured vegetables, like red, orange, and purple vegetables. Be sure to include all sorts of fresh fruits too. A healthy diet includes nutrient-filled foods from all the major food groups, including lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables. Proteins such as lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, peas, and legumes are necessary for strength and growth. Healthy eating habits also include replacing food containing fat, added salt, and sugar with more nutritious choices. Avoid junk food, processed food, fast food and too much sugary food. Cut down on unhealthy snacks. Finally, take time to eat and enjoy your food. Take small portions at a time, chew your food well and do not rush through your meals. PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 4 Non-Textbook Sample letter Dear Ram, Thank you for your letter. I’m glad to hear you are working hard for your exams. Please make sure you get enough rest, exercise and follow a good diet for your overall health and well-being. A good diet means having balanced meals which include food from specific, healthy food groups. You must eat lots of fruits and vegetables of different colours, fresh fruits and salads, not overcooked vegetables. You also need protein, like meat, eggs, seafood, legumes and whole grains. This is important for strong muscles and growth. It is best to cut down on foods rich in fat, added sugar, salt and unhealthy snacks. I know you love your chips, chocolate, and fries! But you need healthier options, like fruits, nuts, and vegetable sticks such as carrots, cucumbers, and sweet potatoes. Avoid junk food, processed food, fast food, sugary food, oily food and sweet drinks. Processed food has preservatives, artificial flavouring, and chemicals which are not good for your health. Remember to drink a lot of water, but not during meals. Eat slowly, chew your food well, enjoy your food and have regular meals. Don’t skip your meals and try to eat a good breakfast every day. With your exams so close, you must take care of yourself and your diet. All the best in your exams. Your friend, Maria Write a letter to your friend advising him/her how to have a healthy diet. LS 3.1.2 1 Chen spends money only on what she needs. 2 Chen uses her savings to donate to the needy . 3 Chen is a frugal and kind person. [A3] Chen Hsu Chu was born in 1950. She lost her mother after completing her primary school education. Chen’s mother was admitted to hospital due to severe stomach pain and the family had to pay so much of money before medical attention could be given. Her family couldn’t afford it. Chen saw her father asking their neighbours for money but [A1] it was too late to save her mother. So Chen had to give up her studies and [A2] dedicate her life to the vegetable stall owned by her father. Chen starts her day with a daily routine. She wakes up at three in the morning and makes her way to the vegetable wholesaler. After that, she sets up her stall and tends to it till seven or eight in the evening. Being the first to arrive and last to leave, the other stall owners have fondly given her the title ‘market manager’. Chen, who is seventy-two years old now, says her vegetable stall is her everything. She sells her vegetables at a cheap price and earns very little profit. Yet, her frugality has allowed her to donate a lot of money to various charitable causes such as schools, orphanages and poor children. How can a vegetable seller donate so much? Her answer was “Spend only what you need, and you’ll be able to save a lot of money.” She had received many titles for her kindness. Forbes magazine named her as one of the [A4] outstanding philanthropists from the Asian region. Time magazine awarded her the title [A4] ‘Heroes of Philanthropy’. PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 15 Non-Textbook Reading Partner Theme: People and Culture We Are the Champions Unit 3 Reading SoW: Lesson 20 A Read the following passage. The Olympics is an international sporting event. It takes place every four years and includes summer and winter games. This international event was first held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC. It was held to honour the gods from ancient Greece. Athletes prayed to the gods for victory. During that time, only boys and men could take part in the Olympics. This is because the athletes were not allowed to wear clothes when they compete. The winner of each event was presented with a crown of olive leaves. The olive branch is a sign of hope and peace. The first modern Olympics was held in Athens, Greece in 1896 and it was during this event that women were allowed to compete along with men. The Games brought together 14 nations and 280 participants. There were 43 sporting events, such as track and field, cycling, shooting, gymnastics and tennis. In 1913, Pierre de Coubertin, the inventor of the modern Olympics, designed the Olympic Logo. The five interlocking rings represent the unity of five continents and appear in five colours on the Olympic flag. The five colours are blue, red, black, green and yellow. Each colour represents the colours present in every nation’s flag. The official Olympic motto is “citius, altius, forties”, a Latin phrase which means “swifter, higher, stronger”. Today’s Olympic Games aims to bring people from different parts of the world together. And the one custom that has not changed from ancient times to modern days is the lighting of the Olympic flame. It is the sign of the Olympic spirit of competition, unity and friendship. Some people feel that the Olympics is no longer relevant in today’s world where many countries are at war. However, I think it is important because it is one way to get countries to cooperate and work together through sports. B Based on the text, state whether the following statements are ‘True’ or ‘False’. LS 3.1.1 1 The Olympics is held once in every four years. Then, match the words to the correct synonyms. My dad’s as brave as a dad can be, I rate him Number One, He’s not afraid of the dead of night, Or anything under the sun. He’s not afraid of a late-night film, Full of horrors on the telly, And is he afraid of skeletons? Not dad, not on your Nelly! He’s not afraid of meeting ghosts, He’d even smile and greet ‘em, And things that scare most dads the most, My dad could just defeat ‘em. He’s not afraid of vampires, Or a wolf-man come to get him, If Frankenstein’s monster knocked on our door, He wouldn’t let that upset him. My dad’s brave as a dad can be, And he’s always ready to prove it. So why, when a spider’s in the bath, Does Mum have to come and remove it? 1 brave frightened 2 rate conquer 3 afraid trouble 4 horrors courageous 5 defeat show 6 upset rank 7 prove terrors B Answer the following questions.
