LS 4.1.4 Theme: People and Culture Good Luck, Bad Luck Unit 10 Writing SoW: Lesson 74 Hi Pat, What wonderful news! I’m so happy you’re finally coming. We’ll start preparing for your visit and I’m sure you’ll really have a great time here. Yes. I’m glad you asked about our superstitions because knowing is caring and doing the right thing. There are many local superstitions which vary from community to community. First, when you take a gift, I suggest you avoid anything that contains alcohol, pigskin or dog images for Muslims and beef by-products for Hindus. For Chinese, you shouldn’t give a clock as this is considered bad luck because ‘clock’ in Cantonese sounds similar to funeral. Also, you shouldn’t wrap gifts in black or white paper because this too is associated with death. If you’re giving a cash gift, better make sure it’s not in a white envelope as this is often done at funerals. Flowers are great gifts but I think it’s best to avoid frangipanis and jasmine because these flowers are commonly found in cemeteries and the scent of these flowers reminds people of funerals. Likewise, you shouldn’t carry or give a black umbrella when visiting someone as this too has negative associations with evil spirits and death. It’s a good idea to follow some local superstitions, so remember to wash your feet and face or better still, shower when you enter the house after a funeral. In the old days, many people died of unknown reasons, so this washing was to stop the spread of germs. However, many believe evil spirits from the funeral home or cemetery may follow you home. There are many more superstitions which you will get to know when you’re here. Whether or not you believe in superstitions, it’s best to know, so you can be sensitive to the local beliefs. Please let me know if there’s any other help you need. Really looking forward to meeting you. Love, Sonia Dear Sonia, I’m so excited to tell you that we are finally going to visit you in Malaysia. I need your help. I hear that Malaysia has many superstitions. We should not offend anyone or be disrespectful, so please tell me about some superstitions especially regarding gifts. We need to know so as not to do the wrong thing. I need your advice and comments especially when visiting relatives. Looking forward to meeting all of you. LS 3.1.1, 3.1.2 1 A mental disorder mentioned in this text is depression . 2 If you know of anyone involved in bullying, you must talk to a responsible adult . 3 Cyberbullying occurs online. 4 Teenagers should learn to say NO to drugs, cigarettes and alcohol . 5 A telephone service that helps with certain problems is a helpline . 6 It is harder for teens to say NO because of electronic media . 7 Being influenced to do what others are doing is called peer pressure . B Complete the table below with a word from the text. Meaning Word 8 someone who keeps to himself loner 9 dependent on addicted Teenagers nowadays experience a lot of issues that they are often unable to deal with. Many teenagers suffer from all sorts of mental health issues. Depression is one of them. If someone you know suddenly starts keeping to himself, becomes a loner, has problems sleeping, or starts to do badly in school, talk to a responsible adult about it. Other than this, many young ones are involved in bullying either as a victim or as the bully. One form of bullying is cyberbullying. Children should be educated about the dangers of social media and how to prevent bullying. They must be taught to report it if it happens to them or to someone they know. Drugs, alcohol and smoking are big problems these days. Weaker students who are not strong enough to say NO, give in easily and play around with drugs, cigarettes and alcohol. Soon they become addicted. Children need to know about the dangers of these addictions and have someone they can trust to help them with these problems. A helpline is a good solution. Electronic media has made it even harder for teens to say NO. Children should be taught how to make wise choices and to stand up to peer pressure. They should not feel they have to follow what others are doing. They have to say NO if it’s wrong! A Read the text and answer the questions that follow. LS 3.1.5 Automobile makers create new models of cars to get us around which are safer for the environment. These vehicles are more fuel-efficient and give out less fumes. They also look quite different from present day cars. I have seen some of these tiny, odd-shaped cars in my neighbourhood lately and was quite curious. These hybrid cars or electric cars run on electricity. The modern hybrid cars run on two power sources – petrol and electricity. The benefit of the hybrid is that instead of running only on petrol which is expensive, it uses electricity when possible. This helps cut pollution and saves the drivers money as they do not have to fill so much petrol. The hybrid cars are becoming more popular because they are eco-friendly and give out less fumes. They are quiet and comfortable to drive. They benefit the owner and the environment. I think this is a good solution to our problem of increasing pollution. I hope one day, we will see cars powered by more ecofriendly fuel sources, such as biodiesel, hydrogen, solar power, and electricity. PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 81 Non-Textbook What would life be like in the future? I think technology will change everything like food, transport, health, relationships, shopping and work. The future will see battery technology providing better electric cars, personal flying machines, Hyperloop transportation systems, private space tourism and drone delivery services. Technology will get smaller, smarter and cheaper. In fact, it will most likely get so small, smart and cheap that we’ll be able to put computers and sensors into almost anything. Trash bins will tell the council when they’re full and may even convert the trash to compost instantly. Television sets will notice when we’ve stopped watching and turn themselves off to save power. Most cars will be driving themselves, with motorways and roads having self-driving lanes. Driverless cars could ease traffic on motorways. Artificial tissue will be produced in factories and used as meat, without the need for living animals. It will be made to look, taste and smell like the real thing. A WALK IN THE PARK I go for a walk in the park as often as I can. There is a small park near my house with many trees and a walking track around it. I prefer walking there in the mornings, when it is cool and fresh. There are a few walkers and some others who find their own spot and do some exercise. It is more crowded in the evenings and on weekends. A couple of days ago, while I was doing my usual walk, I saw a white kitten. It was playing with a larger black cat. As I walked past, the white kitten started following me. I stopped to pat it for a while and when I walked on, it was behind me. It followed me all round the park. I was wondering whether it was lost or abandoned. Should I take it home? Anyway, I thought I had better take it home and at least feed it. So, I picked it up gently in my arms and carried it. As I reached the end of the park, the cat was stiff and afraid. It started struggling in my arms and finally jumped down. It turned away and headed towards the park. I realised it wanted to remain a ‘park cat’ and have its freedom rather than be taken away. So, I left it there and walked on home. The next day, when I went for my usual walk, my ‘white friend’ was there. It waited till I was near and followed me on my walk. This time I didn’t pick it up or try to take it home. I know its home is the park. Answer the questions below. Choose no more than five words and/or a number from the text for each answer. 1 The park has many trees and a walking track around it . 2 The writer likes to walk there because it is cool and fresh in the mornings. 3 On the weekends and in the evenings , there are more people in the park. 4 The writer saw a larger black cat and a white kitten. 5 She thought that if the kitten was lost or abandoned , she would take it home. 6 The kitten started struggling in her arms because it was afraid. 7 The kitten jumped down from her arms and headed towards the park . 8 The writer realised that the kitten wanted to have its freedom and remain a ‘park cat’. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (11 – 16). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. A Lion and a Mouse One day, while a lion was sleeping in the jungle, a mouse ran up and down his body. It was having fun. The lion was disturbed and couldn’t sleep. 11 F He caught the playful mouse and was about to eat it. 12 B “I promise you, I will help you one day if you let me go.” 13 A The lion laughed and let him go. A few days later, a few hunters came to the forest and caught the lion. 14 E They planned to take him away the following day. The lion struggled to get free and started to roar loudly. 15 G It noticed the lion was tied up. Quickly, it ran towards the lion and started gnawing at the ropes to try and free the lion. The tiny mouse gnawed patiently at the ropes until the lion was finally free. 16 D The lion was grateful and thanked the mouse. From this story, we learn that a small, kind act can go a long way. If you help someone, one day when you need help, that person or someone else will help you. A “How can a tiny mouse like you help a large lion like me?” B The mouse begged the lion to set him free. C The lion was frightened. D Both of them escaped into the jungle. E They tied the lion up to a tree. F He woke up quite angry. G The mouse heard the lion roaring and went to see what was wrong. We plan to start as soon as we get all the things we need. Our science teacher is helping us. She loves gardening and has experience with planting herbs and vegetables. A few students have volunteered to be part of this project. We will list the duties and draw up a roster so the work will be shared out, such as watering, composting, fertilising, weeding and harvesting. Having this garden will improve the students’ social skills and widen their knowledge and experience. It will also develop their sense of responsibility. That roads are not a playground and accidents can happen even in residential areas. 4 Why should road safety programmes be fun and interactive? (i) Helps children to get excited to learn road safety rules (ii) Helps children remember the rules longer 5 What does a preschooler usually learn first in road safety programmes? The types of vehicles on the road, the sounds they make and simple road rules. 6 Why do you think the programmes are aimed at preschoolers? HOTS Evaluating Road safety must be taught at an early age so that children will practise it when they start schooling. 7 Give two other ways children can learn about road safety. HOTS Applying (i) Learn to read road signs in class (ii) Have a road safety campaign in school Read the text carefully and answer the following questions. LS 3.1.2, 3.1.4 Road safety knowledge and understanding is important for children. Children need the basic knowledge about road safety so they can keep themselves safe. Programmes focusing on road safety are important as they convey life-saving tips to children. Parents too, should take a front seat in keeping their children safe. These programmes complement the tips and reminders parents pass on to their children. Many children view their neighbourhood roads as a playground. Children can only be taught the dos and don’ts of road safety when adults or their parents view it as important. Adults should convey the message that roads, even those close to their home, can be dangerous. Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time, even in residential areas. Children have to be taught that they cannot play on the roads. Organising fun and interactive road safety programmes is one way to get the life-saving message across. These types of programmes can get children excited about road safety rules and help them understand these rules better. Programmes which have the fun element will also help children remember the rules longer. Preschoolers, who are the target group of these programmes, enjoy these interactive activities. During these programmes, they are first introduced to the types of vehicles on the road, the sounds they make and simple rules to obey. Then, they are taught topics such as road rules. We were very excited as we packed our bags before the trip on Saturday. We knew it would take about four to five hours, with a few stops along the way. So, we made sure we had lots of snacks and drinks for the journey. We left very early in the morning. When we got into the car, my father reminded us to use our seat belts. The morning was cool and we enjoyed watching the sun rise through the trees and hills. Along the way, we saw many oil palm plantations. The greenery was refreshing. There were not many cars on the road, so the drive was easy and comfortable. We chatted and munched on the snacks we had brought. We stopped twice at the rest area so we could go to the washroom, walk around, and have some breakfast. My mum did not like the food, so she bought some cut fruits. Of course, we took lots of photos. In the car again, we continued our road trip towards Ipoh and then Taiping. As we reached Ipoh, we saw the beautiful hills. It was sad to see the beautiful hills being destroyed! After Ipoh, we drove through more hills, jungles, and a tunnel. The view was amazing! Soon, I dozed off and was awakened as I heard my father say, “We’re almost there!” I looked up and saw the sign, ‘TAIPING’! Below are some advice on how to lose weight. Discuss each piece of advice and tell each other what you think about the advice given. Which advice is the most important? LS 2.1.2, 2.1.4 HOTS Analysing If you want to lose weight, you need to watch your diet carefully. Cut down on the amount of sugar and carbohydrates that you eat. I think the only way you can lose weight is to exercise as much as you can. You should join a gym and go there every day. If you exercise for 2 to 3 hours a day, you will definitely lose weight. I think you should eat your food slowly. When you eat slowly, you feel full and you will digest your food better. Good sleep is important to lose weight. If you don’t have enough sleep, you will crave junk food and your body will burn less fat. I think you should only eat when you are hungry. When you eat, you should eat more fruits and vegetables. Eat less dairy products and fats. The best way to lose weight is to cut out all snacks and carbonated drinks. Even fruit juices contain a lot of sugar, so avoid them as well. In my opinion, you should eat a high-protein breakfast. This will help you to feel full for a longer time and will also help you to burn fat. My suggestion is to drink water 30 minutes before meals. This will help your digestion so your body can absorb the nutrients. Dear Pat, First of all, you have to know that many girls your age go through what you are experiencing. Acne and pimples are a passing phase which affects many teenagers. When your hormones settle in a few years’ time, your complexion will improve. Sure, you feel embarrassed and shy now. Worrying about this will make things worse as it adds to your stress. I have a few home remedies you can try but don’t expect immediate results. Just for now, stop using any of the over-the-counter lotions and creams you have bought. Natural home remedies are the best solution for all kinds of skin problems. They are free from chemicals and help give us a healthy complexion. Try using fresh coconut water as a face wash. Leave it on your face for a few minutes, then wash it off thoroughly with clean tap water. Aloe vera is commonly found in most homes. The aloe vera gel can be scooped up, mixed with a few drops of lemon juice, applied on the face, then rinsed off after 20 minutes. Your face will look fresh and feel smoother. Some yoghurt can also be applied on your face, left for a few minutes, then washed off. When you eat a banana or papaya, rub the inside of the skin on your face. Leave it a while and rinse off with plain water. I hope these home remedies will help you. Take care and don’t get stressed. Best, Aunty Ann B Complete the table below with a word from the text. HOTS Evaluating I felt worried for Spotty. 3 Describe an experience when social media helped you. HOTS Applying I asked for study tips on my social media pages and received a lot of helpful responses and advice from my friends and followers. Indra had a pet cat which he loved very much. He called the cat ‘Spotty’ because it was white with black patches all over its body. Indra spent a lot of time with his cat. One day, someone accidentally left the gate open and Spotty ran out. Indra looked all over for Spotty but couldn’t find him. He was devastated and didn’t know what to do. Then, his friend told him to ask for help through social media. Indra uploaded Spotty’s picture on Facebook and gave details about where Spotty was last seen. He asked for help to find his cat. He also gave his phone number in case anyone had information about Spotty. The next day, Indra received a call from someone who had seen Spotty in their neighbourhood. The person had recognised Spotty from the picture on Facebook. Indra immediately went there to look for Spotty. After searching for a while, he managed to find Spotty. PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 100 Like most young teenagers, Susan enjoyed playing online games. Eventually, she met someone online and started a kind of ‘friendship’. His name was Jay. She shared with him what happened in her life, chatting about things that upset her and what made her happy. She looked forward to her chats with Jay. Soon, he suggested they meet and get to know each other better. She was excited. So, one evening, Susan sneaked out of the house to meet her new ‘friend’. When she reached the bus stop where they had agreed to meet, she heard someone call her name. As she turned around, a car stopped near her. When the back door flung open, she was grabbed and pushed into the car! She screamed and kicked but the car just sped off. Fortunately, a man nearby noticed what had happened and took a video of it. He called the police and posted the video online as well. Roadblocks were set up and police patrol cars searched the area. In the meantime, Susan was crying in the car. Her hands were tied behind her back. She was terrified! The two men in the car yelled at her to stop crying and even slapped her. A taxi driver behind them had earlier seen the video on Facebook. He noticed the plate number and realised it was the vehicle in the video. He quickly called the police. Soon, there were sirens and police patrol cars blocked the road ahead. The car was stopped, the two men were handcuffed and finally poor Susan was rescued. What a relief! This time she was crying with joy. She had learnt her lesson the hard way! Never trust anyone online. 1 Susan met Jay online . 2 Jay wanted to meet up so that they could get to know each other . 3 They agreed to meet at a bus stop . 4 When she arrived, Susan was grabbed and pushed into the car . 5 Susan could not escape because her hands were tied behind her back . 6 The incident was caught on video by a man nearby . 7 The video was then posted online / on Facebook . 8 A taxi driver recognised the car because he had seen it on Facebook . 9 Susan had learnt her lesson not to trust anyone online . LS 4.1.4, 4.2.1 STEAM (Sample Answer) The Pros and Cons of Social Media Social media allows kids to make new friends and keep in touch easily. They can share information and updates on what’s happening in their lives. Through social media, kids are exposed to different opinions and cultures. As they share what’s happening in different parts of the world, they widen their knowledge. It also allows kids to help each other in school. Many students now use social media to discuss their homework and help each other with their assignments. However, social media can have a negative effect on kids, especially if they spend a lot of time on their gadgets which can be distracting and a waste of time. Cyberbullying has now become a real threat to many children. Most people don’t check their privacy settings on social media. These settings can actually limit the chances of their personal information being made public. Hackers can easily steal their information and create big problems. In your opinion, why would she hide her true identity? Give reasons for your answer. In my opinion, Marian hides her true identity in order to find genuine friendship or companionship. Most people will be swayed and influenced by her looks and status. Thus, by hiding her identity, she would be able to weed out the fakes among the authentic ones. 2 Accept all suitable answers. This is Chandler. Towards the end of the play, he parts ways with Marian and feels a little regretful that they do not become friends. What do you think will happen to him after this incident? Justify your answer. I think he will spend days thinking about his actions. Chandler will most probably be more truthful and authentic the next time he meets someone interesting like Marian. He will tell the person about his habit of saving a portion of his earnings to experience a day of luxury. 107 Part 3 Questions 17 – 24 Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24. Gingivitis Gingivitis is an infection of the gums which is usually painless. It is mainly caused by plaque and poor oral hygiene. There are many symptoms of gingivitis including swelling, redness and bleeding of the gums. One of the most important ways to prevent and reduce gingivitis is to brush your teeth at least twice a day, every single day. You should brush properly and thoroughly for a minimum of two minutes. Make sure you brush the back side of your teeth right at the back. It is also good to use mouthwash and toothpaste that contain plaque-fighting and antibacterial ingredients. Fluoride is also important as it prevents tooth decay. We should visit the dentist every six months for a check-up. However, if you notice that your gums show the symptoms of gingivitis, you should see the dentist immediately. Eating a balanced diet is important to ensure proper nutrition for your jawbone and teeth. Lack of nutrients such as calcium and vitamin C may cause bacterial infections. Gingivitis is an unpleasant condition that can lead to bad breath and other related conditions. We should all take precautions to prevent it. Changing for the Better Rahim was an unpopular boy because he was cruel and unkind to people. He often liked to make fun of less fortunate people. Pak Abu, on the other hand, was the most liked person in the village. He was cheerful, friendly, and liked to help people. Pak Abu had a very bad scar which covered half his face. He was also lame and walked with the help of a stick. Rahim often made fun of Pak Abu because of this. One day, Rahim was walking behind Pak Abu and imitating how he walked. Pak Ezad, the village headman, was walking past and saw him. “Come here,” he told Rahim. “I have a story to tell you.” “Ten years ago,” said Pak Ezad, “when you were just a baby, there was a fire in the village. Pak Abu was working on his farm when he saw the fire. He ran to help the villagers put out the fire. Suddenly, he heard a baby crying in one of the houses that was on fire. He ran into the house to save the baby. When he was getting out of the house, part of the roof fell on him. It hit Pak Abu’s leg and broke it. Slowly, he crawled out of the burning house. He protected the baby with his body. The villagers sent him to the hospital immediately, but he was critically injured and nearly died. Fortunately, he survived, but he was badly scarred and could never walk normally again.” “So that’s what happened to him. What a brave man,” said Rahim. “Do you want to know who the baby was?” asked Pak Ezad. “Yes, of course. Please tell me,” replied Rahim. “It was you, Rahim. Pak Abu saved you from the fire,” Pak Ezad told him. Rahim looked shocked. “I didn’t know that. I should not have made fun of him,” he whispered. That night, Rahim could not sleep. He kept thinking about what Pak Ezad had told him. From that day onwards, Rahim changed. He was nicer to everyone and never made fun of people again. He was especially kind to Pak Abu.
