Teacher’s Signature: ................................................ Date: ............................... PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 21 Non-Textbook Reading Partner Trees have always been so important to humans. Trees provide us with food, oxygen, shelter, medicine and tools. Besides this, trees create a beautiful and refreshing environment. Would you like to play or walk in a park where there are no trees? Our streets, parks and shopping complexes are all lined with trees to create a soothing green view. They increase our quality of life because they are part of nature. Most of us feel relaxed, pleasant and comfortable when we are surrounded by trees. Therefore, we should not cut down trees but we should plant more and more trees. According to the environmental agencies, we must plant trees if we want to save the planet. Trees planted in an acre of land, can provide oxygen for 18 people. An acre of land is almost the size of a football field. Studies have shown that patients who stay in hospitals which are surrounded by trees, heal faster. Trees can absorb dust and wind and reduce glare. Trees reduce ultra-violet rays by 50% and provide protection to children in schools and playgrounds. Every time a building is built, we lose some green space. However, people are now giving so much importance to trees that in some places, they have replaced the roof of such buildings with a garden. They have turned them into green roofs by planting flowers, grass and vegetables. This can lower the city’s temperature, increase air quality and improve health. Now, that’s a great achievement. So, let’s plant more trees. Read the following text. Then, answer the questions that follow. LS 3.1.1, 3.1.2 1 Why are trees so important to humans? They provide us with food, oxygen, shelter, medicine and tools. 2 How would most people feel if they are surrounded by trees? They would feel relaxed, pleasant and comfortable. 3 What is the benefit of planting trees in an acre of land? The trees can provide oxygen for 18 people. 4 What happens to patients in hospitals which are surrounded by trees? They heal faster. 5 What is a green roof? It is a roof of a building that has been replaced with a garden. 6 List the benefits of green roofs. i. Lower the city’s temperature ii. Increase air quality iii. Improve health 7 Would you like to play or walk in a park where there are no trees? Why? Give your own reason. HOTS Applying No, I wouldn’t. Walking in a park with trees makes me feel calm and happy. Other than that, the relaxing green leaves make me feel that I am in a healthy place. You learnt these useful tips. Fill in the blanks with suitable words from the box. LS 4.1.2 1 We learnt about what we can do to save the environment . 2 Plastics, like water bottles, cups and straws, pollute the land and sea because they remain in the environment for years. 3 No balloons at your next party! They can end up in the ocean and be harmful to sea creatures. 4 It is important to reduce our trash and say NO to plastic. Use less single-use plastic, use our own shopping bags and cut down on too much plastic wrapping. 5 We can help reduce air pollution by walking or cycling instead of using vehicles. Less vehicles means less fuel and less air pollution ! 6 Do not use aerosol insect sprays which harm the environment. Use eco-friendly insecticides instead. 7 Basically, we have to reduce our waste. Recycle, reuse and reduce are the way to go! B Use the notes above to write a letter to your friend who missed the talk. Share what you learnt with him or her. LS 4.1.5 Dear Lin, I am so excited to share with you what I learnt when I attended a talk on what we can do to save the environment. Plastics pollute the land and sea because they remain in the environment for years. Let us not have balloons anymore. They can end up in the ocean and be harmful to sea creatures. It is important to reduce our trash and say NO to plastic. We need to use less single-use plastic, carry our own shopping bags and cut down on too much plastic wrapping. We can help reduce air pollution by walking or cycling instead of using vehicles. Less vehicles means less fuel and less air pollution! Do not use aerosol insect sprays which harm the environment. Use eco-friendly insecticides instead. Basically, we have to recycle, reuse and reduce our waste. We can do this by composting our fruit and vegetable waste, giving away clothes and things we do not need, making crafts out of some trash as well as organising or joining clean-up campaigns. We must create a healthier home and community by doing our part. Please share this information with your friends and family. 27 E-Questions [8 marks] Information Transfer Read the text below and answer the following questions. A NEW HOBBY Anyone can learn to bake. There are so many recipes and ideas on YouTube. During the pandemic, many of us were bored and looked for ways to amuse ourselves. My friend made some chocolate chip cookies and sent me some to try. They were delicious! I wanted to make some and asked my friend for the recipe. She gave me the recipe but she also suggested I search on YouTube, for whatever I was interested in. I did. And I found so many other interesting and simple recipes. I checked with my mum and she said we had most of the ingredients at home. So, I decided to make a lemon butter cake. Besides the flour, butter, eggs and sugar, I used the rind and juice of a lemon. In just about half an hour, the cake was mixed and ready to go into the oven. Soon, the house smelled of cake. My brother came running down asking what that lovely smell was. I was so excited. I peeked through the glass window and saw the cake rising. Soon, it was golden brown and I switched off the oven. As soon as the cake was ready, we had a large slice each. From then on, I tried many other recipes and enjoyed baking. That was the start of my new hobby. Complete the mind map. When someone speaks to you face-to-face, it’s common practice to answer and interact with respect. The same rule applies when it comes to social media. Here are some dos and don’ts when using emails and mobile phones. EMAILS MOBILE PHONES Don’t use capital letters because it’s equivalent to shouting. Don’t send emotional or angry messages. If you wouldn’t say it to the person’s face, don’t send it. Don’t email confidential material. It could end up in the wrong hands. Do be specific in the subject line. Your message could get deleted if it looks like spam. Do answer at the top, not the bottom, of an email. It’s annoying to scroll down to the bottom to read a response. Do stick with black font, size 12. This is the easiest font type to read. Don’t send long text messages. It should be kept short and to the point. If it is more than 4 or 5 lines, call instead. Don’t discuss sensitive and confidential matters through text messages. Don’t take calls during meetings. If you get an unexpected but urgent call, apologise to those present and leave the room to attend to the call. Do return missed calls as soon as possible. It should be done no later than the following day. If you are returning the call later than that, apologise first before saying about anything else. My parents gave me a bicycle for my birthday. I have always wanted a bike but didn’t want to ask my parents because I know how hard they work and they cannot afford it. But I did well in my exams, so they decided to surprise me with this gift. Sani : Congratulations! You are a lucky boy. Nevertheless, I hope you are aware of the dangers of cycling on our busy roads. You should take some precautions. Jon : Yes, I know I have to wear a helmet. My uncle gave me a helmet for my birthday. Sani : A head injury could mean a serious brain injury. That’s why it’s so important to wear your helmet even if you’re cycling nearby. A helmet will provide some protection for your face, head and brain in case of an accident or if you fall from your bike, but you must also be careful and obey the traffic rules. Keep to the side of the road and never fool around on the road or cycle two abreast. Be careful when you cross the streets. Always look out for oncoming traffic. Jon : Yes, Sani. My parents keep reminding me to be careful too. Sani : You should use reflective stickers on your helmet and pedals to make yourself more visible to drivers. Also, check that your brakes are working well. It is better to be safe than sorry. Jon : Thank you for your advice, Sani. I must go now. Sani : Enjoy your new bike. Be safe! A Read the dialogue. Sorry, I haven’t written for so long but I have been busy with my exams. They are all over now and I think I did quite well. [Why] Recently, I found some interesting games that I want to buy. I don’t want to ask my parents for the money. So, I have decided to earn the money myself. [Point 1] Firstly, I am going to do odd jobs. I will ask my parents if there are any odd jobs I can do to earn money. I am sure my father will pay me to wash the car and mow the garden. My mother hates washing the driveway, so I can do that for her. I’ll also ask my neighbours if they have any jobs for me to do. Maybe I can bathe their pets or take them for walks. [Point 2] Other than this, I’m also going to sell some things online. I can sell all sorts of things as long as they are in good condition. I have a lot of books and CDs which I don’t need anymore. I also have some old badminton racquets which I don’t use because I have new ones. They are still in good condition. My younger sister has some dolls she doesn’t want anymore and she says I can sell them too. [Conclusion] What do you think of my idea? Do let me know if you can think of any other ways I can earn some extra money. Take care my friend and do write to me. When I got there, I was shocked and disappointed to see what a bad condition it was in. The park was littered with rubbish and I couldn’t use any of the equipment because it was badly maintained. When I went to school, I discussed what I had seen with my classmates. We decided to clean up the park. The next Saturday, my classmates and I went to the park. We picked up all the rubbish and cut the overgrown grass. Then we cleared the clogged drains. We cleaned up all the equipment and painted it. When we finished, the park looked very clean and nice. Some children immediately came over to play. My friends and I were tired because we had worked so hard but we felt satisfied. PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 49 Non-Textbook Reading Partner The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air which is made up of layers of gases. This is called the atmosphere. The atmosphere helps protect the Earth. Without it, we would be burned by the intense heat of the sun during the day or frozen by the very low temperatures at night. Air pollution occurs when gases, dust, smoke, or odour get into the air. This makes it unclean and unsafe for plants and animals. Human activity is a major cause of air pollution, especially in large cities. Air pollution is caused by pollutants from factories, power plants, vehicles, aeroplanes, chemicals and fumes from spray cans. Open burning and forest fires are two other major causes. Air pollution will lead to the thinning of the ozone layer and acid rain. The ozone layer helps protect us from the harmful rays of the sun. Acid rain is created when gases such as sulphur dioxide get high into the atmosphere. Acid rain can damage plant and marine life. Air pollution can lead to many diseases and can be especially dangerous for babies, elderly people and those with lung problems. It is a serious problem and steps must be taken to reduce air pollution. We must conserve energy, save our forests and plant more greenery. Driving less helps a lot too. A Read the text below. Recycling is when we reuse rather than throw away what we don’t want. (1) It is how we take trash and transform it into new products . It is good for us and the environment because it reduces the use of new raw materials, and improves the quality of air and water. (2) It fights climate change as well . Many things can be recycled such as paper, textiles, metal, plastic, glass and electrical equipment. (3) Separate your household waste for collection . Take your recyclable items to your local recycling centre. A lot of plastic waste ends up in the oceans. (4) This destroys marine life . Think about how many plastic containers and paper bags people use every day from shopping. (5) Use reusable bottles and take your own containers when buying food . It will save you money and help the environment! Try to buy items with minimal packaging. (6) Make it a habit to take your own reusable bags . Reusing things means less pollution. (7) Wrap gifts in recycled or reused wrapping paper . Give gifts that don’t require much packaging. Send recycled-content greeting cards and remember to recycle any paper cards you receive. (8) You can also try sending electronic greeting cards to reduce paper waste . Reducing consumption of electricity, water and fuel is important. (9) Carpool and use bikes or public transportation whenever possible . Reducing can also be applied in other areas of life. Take shorter showers and replace old appliances and bulbs with energy-saving ones. Only buy what you need. (10) When buying food, take only as much sauce and tissue as you need . At buffets, don’t fill your plates with more than you can eat. It’s a sin to be wasteful. If all of us were to recycle just a few items per day, we can go a long way to improving the environment for future generations. 54 Part 3 Questions 17 – 24 Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24. My Favourite Game Football is a very popular sport. It is my favourite game. I play with my friends in the evenings or whenever I’m free. Although football is played mostly by boys, it is now becoming popular among girls too. Research shows that soccer had its origins in China in the 2nd and 3rd century B.C. However, the growth of modern soccer, known globally as football, started in England in the 19th century. Football is played by two teams. A full side has eleven players, one of whom is a goalkeeper. The field is rectangular. Indoor football is called futsal and it is played in an indoor court. Very little equipment is required. All we need is a ball and a field to play. Of course we need friends to play with too! I became interested in this game as a child when I used to watch my older brother play. Then I started to play with him and we used to watch football matches together on television. I really enjoy watching football matches whether live or on TV. It is a game of power, teamwork and skill. My favourite football players are the greats like Neymar (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and David Beckham (England). I hope one day I will be able to represent my country in football and play in international tournaments. At the moment, I am the captain of our house football team. I have also managed to find a place in my school team and have represented my school in a number of inter-school football tournaments. There have been many exciting times and I have learnt a lot. My football skills have improved and many of my teammates are my good friends. Hobbies for Teenagers Teens who pursue music as a hobby can relax by listening to music. They can benefit greatly by learning how to play a musical instrument. Teens can show off their musical talents in bands and choirs. For those interested in music, dance and drama, performing on stage is another option. If they are tech-savvy, there are many computer program which allow users to create and record their own music. Some teens enjoy reading a good book. Fantasy and science fiction have become increasingly popular in recent years. Other teens prefer to express themselves through creative art. They enjoy drawing, painting or creating some artwork. Others enjoy hobbies like building models, taking part in sports and playing computer games. Today’s technology-driven kids tend to be glued to their gadgets all day long. Therefore, it becomes all the more necessary to encourage them to take up a hobby which may give them exposure to outdoor activities. This will help them relax with friends of similar interests, get them closer to nature and encourage them to enjoy the great outdoors. It is important for children to have hobbies. Hobbies can shape the personalities of children positively by helping them become confident, sociable and independent. Having a hobby also sharpens children’s thinking skills. Hobbies not only instill qualities like team spirit, compassion, and patience but also teach them various life skills that help mould children into healthy adults. 57 Chocolate Most people like chocolate because it’s yummy. 35 F Besides the taste, we like it because it contains compounds that make us happy. 36 C We often crave chocolate not because we’re hungry but because the brain seeks pleasure. The darker the chocolate, the more likely it is to provide that pleasure. The ordinary chocolate we buy may not give us the same effects as dark chocolate. 37 B It has a bittersweet taste. Chocolates are well-packaged and beautifully presented. They are arranged neatly and clearly on shelves where they stand out. 38 E This is why they are often placed near the check-out counter. When looking for a gift for an adult or child, chocolates are a good option. 39 H There’s a lot of choice too. Some specialty chocolate shops have a wide variety of special chocolates to choose from. However, they can be expensive because they are special. 40 A White chocolate, chocolates with fruits and nuts, as well as those with fillings and flavours are popular. No matter which one is your favourite, chocolate will never disappoint. It will always put a smile on your face once it melts in your mouth! A There are many varieties of chocolates. B However, not everyone likes dark chocolate! C It also gives us energy. D Chocolates are bad for health. E Shoppers find it hard to walk by without stopping to look at them. F Children, especially, find it hard to say no to chocolate. G My friend gave me some chocolates. H They make the perfect gift for most people. Teacher’s Signature: ................................................ Date: ............................... PERFORMANCE LEVEL ACHIEVED 1 2 3 4 5 6 62 One of the oldest types of transportation is by boat. Thousands of years ago, sea traders set out in small boats to trade their goods with other communities nearby. Nowadays, large ocean liners sail these old sea routes. In many remote parts of the world, people still travel mostly on foot or by riding animals, such as donkeys, horses and camels. But in the cities, people get around mostly by cars, motorbikes and bicycles. The larger cities have a vast network of roads and highways that people use to get to their destinations. Public transport, like buses, taxis and trucks, which transport bulky goods, all travel frequently on these modern motorways. This certainly saves time and is more convenient. In many cities around the world, trains are becoming more popular as they are faster, cheaper and more ecofriendly. Surely, one will find a journey by train more enjoyable and relaxing than travelling by road. Air travel is one of the most convenient ways to reach faraway destinations though it is surely more expensive. However, many budget airlines offer cheaper flights and good promotions so more people can fly to further destinations. It’s amazing how a journey that would have taken days or even weeks can now be done in a few hours! [B2] [B2] [B3] [B4] [B1] Non-Textbook Reading Partner A Read the text. Answer the questions below. LS 2.4.1 HOTS Applying Many people believe that you shouldn’t let your plate dry after a meal. You should either clean your plate immediately or pour a little water onto it to prevent it from drying so that you will always have food. The main reason behind this is probably to make it easier to wash plates. When the plates dry out with bits of food stuck to them, it is more difficult to wash the plates. (Accept any suitable answer) Yesterday, Tina made some pies. She decided to give one of the pies to Rani, her neighbour. Rani was delighted to receive the plate of pie. She thanked Tina gratefully. Later, she put the pie into another container. Rani washed the plate and put a slice of cake on the plate. She walked over to Tina’s house and gave her the cake. Tina was surprised that there was a slice of cake on the plate. Rani explained that she put something sweet on the plate because of a superstition. According to the superstition, when you return a container, you must put sweet things in it as it will bring sweetness and good luck to the person receiving the container. B Answer the following questions. LS 3.1.2, 3.1.1 1 What is believed to be swept away if we sweep at night? It is believed that we will sweep away good luck if we sweep at night. 2 Why do most lifts avoid using the number 4? In Mandarin, the number 4 sounds similar to the word ‘die’, which is considered bad luck. 3 What is believed to happen if we cut our nails at night? It is believed that we will shorten our lives. 4 Why shouldn’t we sit on books? To show respect and care for them Malaysia is made up of many races and communities. Beliefs have been passed down for generations and each community has its own beliefs and superstitions. Here are some common ones: Superstitions Possible Explanation 1 Don’t sweep the floor at night Sweeping the house at night is considered bad luck by most Malaysian families. It is believed that good luck is being ‘swept away’, especially when we sweep things out of the house. This may be because when sweeping in the dark, we may accidentally sweep away something valuable that may have been dropped on the floor. 2 Unlucky number 4 Many believe that the number 4 is bad luck especially among the Chinese community. Most lifts have floor numbers 3A or 13A, rather than 4 or 14. This is particularly interesting as Westerners try to avoid the number 13. In Mandarin, the number 4, si, sounds similar to the word ‘die’, sĭ. Therefore, no one likes to live in a house with a number that sounds like ‘die’. 3 Don’t cut your nails at night It is believed that if we cut our nails at night, we will shorten our lives. This superstition must have come about to stop people from cutting their nails in poor light so that they do not accidentally cut themselves. 4 Don’t sit on books This is another one of those strange superstitions. We grew up believing that sitting on books makes us stupid. Books are for reading, not for sitting on. There is no exact explanation of why and how this superstition started. Perhaps our elders wanted us to show some respect for our books and care for them.
