N8 Subject-Verb Agreement 1 A singular subject is followed by a singular verb while a plural subject is followed by a plural verb. e.g. Rashid walks to school every day. add -s to form a singular verb The boys walk to school every day. plural verbs are in their base form 2 Here are some common rules on subject-verb agreement: • Singular subject + and + singular subject = plural verb e.g. Mimi and her mother are going shopping tomorrow. • Singular subject + or/nor + singular subject = singular verb e.g. Either Sarah or Dave is the top student in class. • Every, each, everyone, everybody, anyone, anybody, someone, somebody = singular verb e.g. Everyone takes pictures on the last day of school. • Either of/Neither of = singular verb e.g. Neither of them is going for the trip. Tenses 1 When talking about tenses, we must look at the verb. The verb will determine the tense of a sentence. SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE base verb + -s e.g. Rashid walks to school every day. (Singular) SIMPLE PAST TENSE base verb + -ed e.g. Rashid walked to school yesterday. SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE will + base verb e.g. Rashid will walk to school tomorrow. 2 For most verbs, just add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ for the past tense form but there are some irregular verbs: Base Verb Simple Past Tense Form go went eat ate do did take took write wrote say said see saw hear heard buy bought sleep slept 3 Here’s how we use the tenses: Tense When to use Example Present tense (a) To express general truth (b) To show habitual action (c) To give orders or instructions • The sunflower is yellow in colour. • Jennifer takes the LRT every day. • Clean your room. Past tense (a) To talk about past actions (b) To talk about imagined things or wishes • Lily wore a green dress yesterday. • If I were a millionaire, I would travel all over the world. Future tense (a) To express predictions (b) To talk about an arrangement (c) To express intention • James will win the competition. • We will be at the field this evening. • I will do the laundry this evening. 00-1 Strategi A+ Eng F1_Notes_Final.indd 8 10/6/23 3:26 PM BIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. N9 Literature Zone Poem: Sad I Ams by Trevor Millum I am the ring from an empty Cola can the scrapings from an unwashed porridge pan the severed arm of last year’s Action man. I am the envelope on which the gum is gone the Sellotape where you can’t find the end the toothless stapler, springless bulldog clip the dried up liquid paper that mars instead of mends the stamped addressed reply that you forgot to send. I am the battery in which no charge is left the starter motor which remains inert the tyre on which the tread is worn the sparking plug which shows no sign of spark the carburettor choked by bits of dirt the chromium trim from which the shine has gone. I am a garden overgrown with weeds a library book that no one ever reads a stray which no one thinks to feed the piece of good advice which no one seems to need. Trevor Millum Summary The poem talks about everyday things that we often overlook. We neglect them because they are no longer useful to us. However, if we put ourselves in their shoes, it is actually very sad for the things to be pushed aside and forgotten. That is why the poem is given the title Sad I Ams. N10 Poem: News Break by Max Fatchen Now why so loving, darling, And why the sudden kiss? You’d help me with some little jobs? For goodness sake, what’s this? Your face is clean for once, dear, Your clothes without a crease. You saved your luncheon money? Will wonders never cease? No dropping of your school books, No shrieking, childish treble. Today you are a lamb, love, Where yesterday a rebel. But surely you’re some stranger, No rage or hullabaloo. Come closer, let me look, dear, Can this be REALLY you? Now were you struck by lightning Or were you stunned at sport? Ah … now I see the reason. You’ve brought your school report! Max Fatchen Summary The poem is written from a parent’s point of view, expressing disbelief over a child’s changed behaviour. The child who is usually naughty has become more loving, hardworking and obedient. There is a twist to the story however, when it is revealed at the end that the real reason behind the sudden change is because the child has brought home his/her report card.  Brace Map i-THINK Structure 5 stanzas with 4 lines each Setting At home Persona The parent of the child Tone/ Mood Light-hearted and humorous Evokes the feeling of curiosity in the reader Themes 1 Disobedience 2 The relationship between parent and child Moral Values 1 We must behave well at all times. 2 We must have courage to face unpleasant consequences. Merlin dreamed that a boy named Arthur will grow up to be the King of England. After Arthur became King, he married a girl named Guinevere despite Merlin’s warning of a dark future. Soon after, Merlin left Arthur because he was losing his powers. Arthur and Guinevere had a friend named Lancelot who was also a great knight. Mordred, Arthur’s evil nephew, managed to convince Arthur that Lancelot was in love with Guinevere. While Arthur was away fighting, he realised that it was a trick and Mordred wanted to become king. N14 Novel: The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss Synopsis In the early 19th century, the Robinson family set sail from England to become missionaries in Australia. However, their ship was destroyed in a terrible storm and they became stranded on a deserted island. By using natural resources found on the island, they managed to build a home for themselves and lived happily for many years. Over time, some of their livestock went missing. They also found a dead tiger but the cause of its death as well as the missing livestock remained a mystery. One day, Ernest found a cave and they decided to use it as storage space. Then, Fritz made a canoe and went sailing around the island. He found a girl named Jenny, who was also stranded on the island. When they got back to the house, Fritz realised that something was wrong as all of his family members had gone missing. It turned out that they were trapped in the cave by a giant snake. Together, they managed to kill the snake by setting it on fire. One day, they saw a ship sailing past and managed to attract its attention using an old cannon. The ship was looking for Jenny but the crew invited the Robinson family to join them on their journey back to England. The Robinson children went back to England and Fritz married Jenny. Mr and Mrs Robinson however, decided to stay on the island as they were happy there. N15 Themes Theme Evidence Resourcefulness When the Robinson family became stranded on a deserted island, they had to make do with what was available to build a life for themselves. For example, they made a house using materials from their sunken ship. Family love The Robinson family was able to survive on the deserted island because they worked together and helped each other whenever there was a problem. Determination The family had to face many challenges throughout their stay on the island. Yet, they were able to overcome those challenges because they were determined to make the best of the situation. Moral Values 1 We must persevere when faced with difficult situations. 2 We must show love and support to our family members. 3 We must respect nature. 4 We must overcome challenges with hope and positivity. Novel: 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne Synopsis In 1866, a giant sea monster was becoming a danger to ships. Professor Aronnax, an expert on undersea life was invited to join an expedition to hunt down the creature. One day, their ship crashed into the mysterious creature and Professor Aronnax, his servant, Conseil and a skilled harpooner, Ned, were thrown overboard. They soon realised that the ‘sea monster’ was actually a submarine built and controlled by Captain Nemo. The submarine was called the Nautilus and it was shaped like a fish. Captain Nemo saved them but he refused to let them go because he wanted to keep the submarine a secret from the world. They had no choice but to stay on the submarine. During their stay in the submarine, they had many underwater adventures with Captain Nemo. After a few months of living on the submarine, they ran into a warship and were attacked. In the confusion, Professor Aronnax, Conseil and Ned tried to escape. Unfortunately, their boat got caught in a violent whirlpool. When they woke up, they realised that they have been rescued but the Nautilus and Captain Nemo have disappeared. The submarine also allowed them to explore the underwater world to their heart’s content. Freedom Captain Nemo disliked living on land and being in contact with other people so he built a submarine that allowed him to live underwater. However, he misused his power and kept Professor Aronnax, Conseil and Ned prisoners because he did not want his secret to be discovered. Teamwork During their underwater adventures, there were many instances where Professor Aronnax, Conseil and Ned Land had to work together to stay alive. For example, when they were attacked by cannibals in New Guinea and when the Nautilus was trapped in an underwater ice tunnel. I want to open a savings account. Rani: I see. I just save my money in my money box. Why do you want to open a savings account? Malik: Well, it is safer to put your money in a savings account. Also, you can earn interest. Besides that, if you put your money in a money box, it will be easier to take out and spend. Rani: That is true. No wonder I have very little savings. What is the minimum amount needed to open a savings account? Malik: That depends on the bank. My bank needs a minimum amount of RM20. Rani: Okay. That’s a reasonable amount. Malik: If you want your money to grow, you must try to deposit money weekly or monthly. I plan to do it weekly. Rani: Good idea. I think I will open a savings account too. Malik: Fantastic! It is a house that will be equipped with a number of devices that can automate tasks usually handled by humans. All the devices and appliances in the smart home will be connected so that they can communicate with each other and also with you. For example, if a device uses electricity, it can be put on your home network and at your command. The applications that can be put on your home network are related to home security, lighting, air conditioner, home theatre and even your entertainment system. In order to switch on or off a device, you just have to give a command through a remote control, voice, smartphone or tablet. Due to the incredible success of smartphones and tablet computers, smart homes are becoming more and more common. These devices can easily be carried around and we now have constant Internet connections. Therefore, they can be configured to control many other online devices. The products of smart home were first developed in 1975. The company behind it was called Pico Electronics from Scotland. The company developed the X10 that allows compatible products to talk to each other over the already existing electrical wires of a home. All the appliances and devices are receivers while the means of controlling the system, such as keypads or remote controls are transmitters. Unfortunately, the X10 has some limitations. It is not always reliable to communicate over electrical lines because the lines get ‘noisy’ from powering other devices. Therefore, even though an X10 device could interpret electronic interference as a command and react, it might also not receive the command at all. The X10 devices still exist, however there are other more advanced technologies at present. B Answer the questions below. Choose no more than five words and/or a number from the text for each answer. For each question, write your answer in the space provided. 1 A smart home is a house which is equipped with a number of devices that automate tasks normally handled by humans. 2 A homeowner can give a command to a device in a smart home through a remote control, voice, smartphone or tablet. 3 Smartphones and tablet computers can be configured to control many other online devices. 4 The smart home products were first developed by Pico Electronics in 1975. 5 The X10’s limitations are that it is not always reliable to communicate over electrical lines because the lines get ‘noisy’ from powering other devices.
