LS 3.1.2 Planet Earth is our home and we must do our part in saving our planet. If we do not protect Earth, it will be harmful for the long-term health of humans, animals and plants. There are many ways to protect Earth. Reducing water pollution One way is to reduce water pollution because water is an important natural source. We should not dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet. We also must not throw rubbish into the toilet. It is important to install a water-efficient toilet so that water is not wasted. When taking a shower, try to limit it to ten minutes. Reducing air pollution We should also try to reduce air pollution. One way is by either biking or taking public transport when we go anywhere. We should limit the usage of our car because it produces carbon dioxide which is bad for the environment. People should also consider buying cars that have greater fuel efficiency so that the pollution is lessened. Reducing land pollution Reducing land pollution too will help save our environment. Instead of littering, we should throw our rubbish into trash cans. When we litter, the rubbish will go into the soil and water. Furthermore, we should also use less chemical pesticide and fertilisers when farming. Instead, people should try using natural pesticides and fertilisers. We should also reduce, reuse and recycle our things to reduce land pollution. As residents of planet Earth, it is our duty to protect the environment. We can do this by reducing water, air and land pollution. 1 We must save our environment or else it will in the long term. 28 Gapped Text You are going to read a newspaper article about food served at different festivals. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – D) to fit each gap (21 – 24). FOODS OF DIFFERENT FESTIVALS We are fortunate to live in a country that is home to people of different races and religions. 21 B Besides unique customs, traditions, music, dances and decorations, the different festivals offer different types of food. Special traditional foods are prepared during each festival. They symbolise the rich culture of different races and ethnic tribes. They also serve as a special treat for all Malaysians to enjoy. 22 C There are murukku, briyani, thosai and chutney, and sweet desserts such as barfi and ladoo on Deepavali. There are yee sang, love letters, peanut cookies, kuih bahulu and pineapple tarts on Chinese New Year. During Pesta Kaamatan, a harvest festival celebrated in Sabah, there are hinava (fish fermented in lime juice), bambangan (wild, pickled mangoes) and tapai (fermented rice wine). 23 D These include sarang semut (a crispy sweet biscuit), pansuh (a marinated meat dish cooked in bamboo sticks) and tuak (rice wine). Malaysians get to try these types of food when they visit family, friends and neighbours, or at ‘open houses’. 24 A Open houses are usually organised by residents’ associations, private companies, government agencies or officials. Everyone is welcome at open houses. They can share the spirit of the festive season and eat different types of food. A The ‘open house’ concept is common in Malaysia. B Malaysians celebrate several major festivals during the year. C Rendang, ketupat, lemang and serunding or meat floss are typically served on Hari Raya Aidilfitri. D On the other hand, during Hari Gawai, a festival celebrated in Sarawak, a different selection of food is served. For educational purposes only Scan the QR code for E-Questions. LS 3.1.2 Do you know who the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series is? The author’s name is Joanne Kathleen Rowling. She writes under the pen names J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith. She is a British author. Rowling was born in Gloucestershire, England on 31 July 1965. Although she always wanted to be a writer, she chose to study French and the classics at the University of Exeter. She felt it would be easier to get jobs if she was bilingual. She graduated in 1987 after a year of study in Paris. After university, Rowling worked for Amnesty International. The idea to write the Harry Potter series came about in 1990 when she was on a train delayed by four hours from Manchester to London. Since she had no pen or paper with her at that time, it allowed her to fully explore the characters and their story in her imagination before she reached her flat and began to write. However, the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was only published in 1997. During that seven-year period, a lot happened to her. Rowling’s mother passed away, her first child was born, she got divorced from her first husband and even experienced poverty. Rowling is now the United Kingdom’s best-selling living author. Her current net worth is approximately £820 million ($999.21 million). When Rowling sold her rights to her first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to U.S. publisher Scholastic, she was paid $105,000. Later when Warner Bros. released the first film adaptation of Rowling’s books, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, she was reportedly paid $500,000 for the rights. I want to see his expression when he comes for them and cannot find them,” said the younger brother. His older brother said, “We shouldn’t play tricks like that. I’ve a better idea. Let’s put a gold coin in each shoe. We’ll hide behind a bush and watch his expression when he finds the gold coins.” The older brother put a gold coin in each shoe and then joined his younger brother behind the bush. They waited patiently for the farmer to come for his things. Soon, the farmer was done for the day. He put on his coat, and then his shoes. As soon as he put one foot into his shoe, he found the gold coin. He held it in his hand and looked around. He looked into the other shoe and found another gold coin. “I don’t know who put these coins in my shoes but they have come at a good time. Oh, thank you for this gift. Now, I can provide food for my family for several weeks!” The brothers listened silently to the farmer’s cries of gratitude. After the farmer left, the brothers walked home silently. 53 Part 5 Text 1 Questions 33 – 36 You are going to read an article about medical breakthroughs. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – D) to fit each gap (33 – 36). Medical Breakthroughs We have seen many medical breakthroughs in recent years. They help treat many diseases, relieve pain, prolong life and allow people to lead healthy lives. A recent medical invention helps get rid of brain clots in stroke patients. Currently, clot-dissolving drugs are used for the most common type of stroke. However, these drugs do not always work. 33 D Studies have shown that this device has been successful in helping certain patients to survive and live a full life. Another medical breakthrough is a robotic limb. 34 A The purpose of this invention is for the user to be able to move their robotic limb naturally. 35 C This tool cuts away harmful genetic mistakes in a person’s DNA. Recently, this technology was used to eradicate leukaemia in a young British girl. She was given gene-edited immune cells to fight the disease. In the near future, there will a medical invention for sufferers of chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes and heart diseases. 36 B These sensors will be able to monitor and control their conditions. A It is linked to the brain of a paralysed person or an amputee. B Sufferers will be able to wear life-saving health sensors. C The gene editing tool is another breakthrough. D So now doctors use a device, called a stent retriever, to remove clots. [4 marks] 03 Strategi A+ Eng F1_Mid Yr Assess_48-56_Final.indd 53 10/6/23 4:24 PM BIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. 54 [4 marks] Text 2 Questions 37 – 40 You are going to read an article on how to deal with problems as a teenager. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (E – H) to fit each gap (37 – 40). Speak Up and Reach Out As students, you often face many problems in schools, with your friends or with your schoolwork. You may feel alone and that there is no one that you could talk to. However, this is not true. 37 H Parents are the people that are closest to you. 38 G Your parents will be eager to help. They often offer advice, provide support and show their understanding based on their own experiences. Other than your parents, there are counsellors in every school. 39 F They are qualified to give professional help to students to deal with personal, social and even problems related to schoolwork. Sometimes they even offer students career guidance. In school, there are also peer facilitators who assist the counsellors. These peer facilitators are selected students themselves who are interested to help other students. They are given training on how to be a good listener. 40 E They think that peers understand them better than adults especially when it comes to issues such as peer pressure, schoolwork and the challenges of being a teenager today. E Some students find it easier to pour their woes to someone of their age group. F Counsellors are trained to help students overcome their fears, anxieties and worries. G So, when you face problems, you should tell your parents what is troubling you. H Here are some groups of people that you can turn to for help. 03 Strategi A+ Eng F1_Mid Yr Assess_48-56_Final.indd 54 10/6/23 4:24 PM BIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. You may use the notes below to help you. The Advantages of Online Shopping Offers more choices Convenient Can compare prices Write your essay. (Suggested answer) These are some of the advantages of online shopping. It is very convenient to shop online. You can shop from anywhere. You don’t need to spend time to get to the shop or deal with crowds. Furthermore, you can compare prices from different sellers before you decide to buy. Some sellers offer lower prices because the products come directly from the manufacturer or seller. You can look for the best bargains. Finally, online shopping offers more choices. There are many reasons to keep a budget. When you budget, you know exactly where your money is going. You can also save more money in the future because sticking to a budget prevents unnecessary spending. It is easy to realise when you are being wasteful and you can rectify the problem quickly. Maintaining a budget is a good habit. It will come in handy when you are an adult. When you grow older, you may have credit card payments and loans to pay. A budget will help you meet these payments. It will also help avoid any financial crisis. Even if you do face a financial problem, you can deal with it early and avoid undue stress. There are three steps to prepare for your budget. First, calculate all the money you earn in a month. Next, figure out all your expenses. Finally, compare your expenses with your earnings. Do they match up, or do you have to cut down on your expenses? Don’t dismiss the importance of budgeting. It not only prevents overspending but also helps you reach your financial goals.
