84 Gapped Text You are going to read an article about animal cruelty. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – D) to fit each gap (13 – 16). ANIMAL CRUELTY Animal cruelty is when someone hurts an animal or does not care for an animal responsibly, like not giving a dog or cat food and water. It is also called animal abuse, or neglect. 13 B Ithink serious measures should be taken to stop animal cruelty because poor and defenceless animals are dying or getting hurt, and people are abusing their pets without repercussions. 14 A Unfortunately, some of the animals are not strong enough to fight back or take care of themselves. 15 C There are two kinds of animal cruelty which consist of direct violence and neglect. Usually, many dogs or cats that suffer direct violence will also display behaviours such as hiding, walking with their heads down and tails between their legs, or cringing when people approach. On the other hand, signs of neglect include injuries or illnesses that linger untreated, poor living conditions (including filth and dangerous objects near the pets and being left outside in bad weather), and bones being visible through the skin. The best way to fight animal cruelty is to teach as many people as possible how their pets should be treated and what they should never do. 16 D In addition, we can help spread the word by utilising our own community to do so. For instance, we can share messages about proper treatment of animals on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and so on. It is our job to be the voice for creatures who cannot speak up for themselves. A This includes extremely poor grooming. B Animal cruelty is a serious problem. C It is against the law to be cruel to or harm animals, even your own pets. D Parents and educators should teach children how to safely and humanely interact with animals at an early age. HOTS Analysing I think there are solar panels which harness the sun’s energy to recharge the batteries. The batteries are continuously recharged, so they can help power Curiosity. (Accept any suitable answers) 5 What can scientists do to make the wheels more durable? HOTS Applying I think they can use metal wheels or thicker durable rubber tyres. (Accept any suitable answers) Curiosity is the name of the rover sent to Mars to explore the crater, Gale. The name of this particular NASA mission is Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). Curiosity was launched on 26 November 2011 and landed inside Gale on 6 August 2012. It travelled 560 million km to reach Mars. The journey took over eight months. At the end of 2012, its mission was extended indefinitely. Curiosity is still operational. As at 20 May 2021, Curiosity has been on Mars for 3,208 days. Curiosity weighs 900 kg. It has 17 cameras and 10 scientific instruments. Some of the instruments include a mobile organic chemistry lab, a laser which can vaporise rocks and a Dust Removal Tool. The rover is powered by a generator and lithium-ion batteries. It is able to travel at 90 m per hour but its average speed is about 30 m per hour. It can roll over obstacles too. However, after six years travelling across Mars’ harsh terrain, its wheels have punctures and tears. The MSL has four scientific goals. They are to determine whether Mars can support life including the role of water, study the climate of Mars, study the geology of Mars and prepare for future missions by humans to Mars. They observe objects such as planets, stars and galaxies within the universe. They use physics and mathematics to learn about the objects in space. Astronomers spend most of their time in front of computers. They analyse data collected in the universe. The data is collected using equipment on earth such as telescopes and radio dishes. Data and observations can also be gathered using equipment in space such as satellites and the Hubble Space Telescope. Most astronomers work either in universities or government space agencies. They may write research papers to talk about new theories about the universe. Some may analyse data to discover new planets or stars and understand how and why they behave a certain way. Others work with engineers and scientists to design and test new equipment used to study the universe. A few work in planetariums where they conduct educational programmes to teach the public about space. Understanding why customers complain will help businesses handle them better. What are the types of complaints and how can they be remedied? Some customers complain because the products they receive don’t operate properly. The solution is to fix or replace the product quickly. Customers also get upset when they receive a wrong delivery. For this type of complaint, the online website can resend the correct order promptly. When customers are kept waiting on the telephone or in a long queue at the shop, they get frustrated. Shop personnel can open more cashier counters or employ more salespersons to help customers. Another complaint is regarding rude or unhelpful staff. Companies can train their staff to remain calm and speak politely when dealing with angry customers. When any of the above-mentioned complaints occur, we can say that the company or shop has poor customer service. This means that their customer care activities don’t meet the standards of good customer care. LS 3.1.1 We alwayswonder howlifewill be like inthe future.Based onthe currentprogress oftechnology,we canrealistically predict how life will be like in the next 30 years. In the not too distant future, nobody will be driving cars. Instead, there will be self-driving cars, which in fact are already here and they work. It is predicted that they will get smarter, more affordable and more accessible. An advantage of self-driving cars is that they will never get tired, feel sleepy and have faster reaction times. Therefore, there will be much better traffic coordination and traffic jams and accidents will be minimised. In the future, white-collar workers will become digital nomads. During the COVID-19 pandemic, most whitecollar workers had to work from home. This showed that it was more convenient to work from home or wherever they felt most comfortable. It is predicted that by 2050, the world will be so connected that an office building or a home office will no longer be necessary. White-collar workers will be able to work anytime and anywhere and therefore become true digital nomads. The traditional 9-to-5 workday will no longer exist. Some people believe that smartphones will go extinct and be fully replaced by AR glasses. However, it is more likely that the traditional smartphone form factor will go extinct and be replaced by newer, more flexible form factors such as foldable or rollable phones with bigger screens. These newer types of smartphones will no longer do simple tasks such as calling, messaging and checking emails. These will be done by the wearable gadgets such as smart glasses and watches. Ourfuture more flexible smartphones will do more immersive tasks such as working, gaming and video calling. Furthermore, due to the new battery technology, the future smartphone will be much thinner, lighter and more pocketable. It is indeed exciting to think about the progress of technology. Hopefully, these predictions come true and benefit us all. B Answer the questions below. LS 3.1.1 LS 3.1.2 1 How will self-driving cars be in the future? They will get smarter, more affordable and more accessible. 2 Name an advantage of self-driving cars. Never get tired/feel sleepy/have faster reaction times (Accept any of the answers) 3 Where did most white-collar workers work during the Covid -19 pandemic? At their homes. 4 What will happen to the traditional 9-to-5 job by 2050? It will no longer exist. 5 How will the form factor of smartphones most likely be in the future? Future smartphones will be foldable or rollable with bigger screens. 6 Why do you think the future smartphones will be used only for immersive tasks such as working, gaming and video calling? HOTS Evaluating I think future smartphones will be used only for immersive tasks because they will use 3D technology which is more suitable for immersive tasks. People cannot agree whether space tourism is really beneficial. Astronauts risk their lives to travel to space in the name of science. Now, people want to go to space in the name of adventure. On one hand, space tourism creates interest in space among the public. It allows ordinary people to experience being in outer space. As space tourism grows, the cost of space travel will go down. This will give more people the opportunity to be space passengers. On the other hand, the price to be a space passenger is too high. The industry is new and space planes are still being developed. Space travel is dangerous and passengers are risking their lives just to enjoy weightlessness. In conclusion, the space tourism industry is very new. The cost to human life is high for something that is a luxury, not a need. Therefore, in my opinion, space tourism isn’t really beneficial. Theme: Science and Technology Let’s Experiment! KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have been generating an average of 1.17 kg or 36,699 tonnes of household waste daily. According to last year’s data from the Solid Waste Management and Public Health Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), the majority of food waste ended up in landfills, while some could potentially be recycled. While this means losses in terms of recyclable resources in an industry that is considered high-value, it would also worsen the garbage generation situation, given that landfills are expected to last for another 25 years, SWCorp pointed out. Adapted from The STAR, November 2018 7 From the newspaper extract, we can conclude that A most of the food waste ended up in landfills. B the landfills are expected to last for less than 25 years. C Malaysians have been generating more than 1.17 kg in household waste daily. The crow is a type of black bird which is found in most parts of the world. 107 Part 3 Questions 17 – 24 Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24. Joanne Rowling Joanne Rowling is a well-known British author. She was born on 31 July 1965 in Gloucestershire, England. Rowling wrote the popular Harry Potter fantasy series under her pen name, J. K. Rowling. She has also written adult novels such as Cormoran Strike, a crime fiction series under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The author came up with the idea for the Harry Potter series in 1990 while she was on a delayed train from Manchester to London. She was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary during that time for Amnesty International. The first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, took seven years until it was published in 1997. A lot happened during those seven years; Rowling’s mother passed away, her first child was born, she was divorced from her first husband, and she experienced relative poverty. Despite all that, she persevered to get her book published. The Harry Potter books became one of the best-selling books of all time, with over 500 million copies sold. Rowling’s current net worth is approximately USD 1 billion. In April 1997, she sold the rights to her first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, to U.S. publisher Scholastic and was paid USD 105,000. Later, when Warner Bros. released the first film adaptation of Rowling’s books, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, it was reported that she was paid USD 500,000 for the rights. Rowling is kind-hearted and generous. She has supported charities that include Comic Relief, One Parent Families, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain. Rowling too launched her own charity called Lumos. Questions 17 – 24 Complete the following table. Choose no more than three words and/or a number from the text for each answer. Choose from the sentences (A – D) to fit each gap (33 – 36). For each question, mark the answer (A – D) on your answer sheet. Experiencing a Landslide It was six in the morning on a Wednesday. My family and I had just woken up when we heard a loud rumbling sound coming from the direction of the hill slopes. We quickly ran to the balcony of our ninth-floor apartment, but we could not see anything. 33 B We figured there had been a landslide on the hill due to the heavy rains. We did not know what else to do, so we ate our breakfast. 34 D The sun was already up, and we could now see huge boulders resting at the foot of the slopes. Our neighbour informed us that a major landslide had occurred. We all went down to the basement and saw rescue workers removing buried vehicles from the rubble. 35 A On top of that, there was also a power failure. We had to suffer the heat and could not watch television or go on the Internet. We spent the whole day just watching the rescue workers. Later that night, we were informed that the access road had been cleared. 36 C We all felt very grateful. A To our dismay, the landslide had also cut off the only road to town. B The whole place was dark. C Luckily, there were no casualties or massive damage to property. D After breakfast, my mother called us to the balcony. 110 Text 2 Questions 37 – 40 You are going to read a text about a family watching a turtle lay eggs. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (E – H) to fit each gap (37 – 40). For each question, mark the answer (E – H) on your answer sheet. Turtle-Watching Experience During the school holidays, my family went turtle-watching at Rantau Abang, Terengganu. 37 G We then waited patiently for the turtle to arrive. An hour later, our guide said he saw a turtle coming to the beach. We felt very excited. 38 E We quietly walked closer to the turtle. Suddenly, our guide stopped. He pointed to a spot under a large tree and asked us if we could see something crawling near some rocks. It was pitch black, and my family had a hard time seeing anything. 39 H However, our guide said if we did that while the mother turtle was digging the egg chamber, she might feel threatened. The mother turtle might just then go back to the ocean without laying any eggs. Finally, at almost eleven at night, the turtle laid its first egg. 40 F To our delight, we saw the turtle quickly lay ping-pong-sized eggs in a deep pit. The turtle managed to lay more than a dozen eggs. After laying the eggs, the mother turtle waddled back to the ocean. It was indeed an amazing experience. My family was glad to have witnessed this miracle of nature. E It would be our first ever turtle-watching experience. F Our guide shone some light on the egg chamber. G We arrived at the beach at around nine at night and were met by a guide. H We wanted to turn on our torchlights. 111 Paper 2 Writing [1 hour] Part 1 You should spend about 25 minutes on this part. Read the message from your friend, Lisa. Hi, I am thinking of taking up a hobby. Should I paint, swim, garden, or do something else? I am looking forward to your suggestion. Tell me what you think. Lisa In about 80 words, write a message to Lisa giving her some advice. [30 marks] (Sample Answer) Hi Lisa, I think you should garden, as you have always been passionate about planting flowers and trees. I remember you once planting a hibiscus plant and taking very good care of it. It grew very well and had many hibiscus flowers. Gardening can help you relax and keep you fit and healthy too. I do not think you should take up swimming as the nearest public swimming pool is rather far away. I do hope my advice has been helpful. Bye. 112 Part 2 You should spend about 35 minutes on this part. You have been talking about reading storybooks. In about 90 words, write an essay about your favourite storybook. You may use the notes below to help you. My Favourite Storybook Why you like it The title The author Write your essay. [30 marks] My favourite storybook is Ten Thousand Skies Above You. It is a sci-fi romance novel and was written by Claudia Gray. The story is about a teenager named Marguerite Caine who can travel to alternate dimensions with the Firebird, which was invented by her parents. However, she has caught the attention of enemies who are willing to kidnap, blackmail, and even kill to use the Firebird for themselves. I enjoyed reading this book because it has plenty of action and adventure. The story will leave you on the edge of your seat. 05 Strategi A+ Eng F1_UASA_104-112_Final.indd 112 10/6/23 4:51 PM BIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD. PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHDRBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
