Women empowerment is about expanding women’s
capacity to make good life choices in situations where
they were once deprived. Due to this, we wish to
empower women and be their force towards better life
choices and motivate them to lead a better livelihood.

In PurpleLily’s education workshop, we believe
that by teaching and developing financial
literacy among women, it will give them the
knowledge and bargaining power to influence
decision making. In turn, be it decision making
within intra-household or extra-household level,
we believe that financial literacy will prepare
them to be more knowledgeable and confident.
Besides financial literacy, we also incorporate
life skills education such as building
confidence, motivation, positive thinking,
effective communication which will also equip
our participants to be more self-assured and
resilient. Not to forget, we also touch on the
topic of women’s health and well-being
because it is important for women to know
about the changes of their body and take
affirmative action about it.

Feedback from a participant: ‘Very useful for those
minorities who are less fortunate (low-income group) to
attend or exposed to courses for their own skills and
development. I would say, many in the group learned a lot on
the budget and expenses record and hopefully they will be
able to manage and administer their own home budget and
expenses. Therefore, this encourages them to be able to
contribute to their husband’s income, to do cost control and
able to save. Good courses and I encourage you to continue
the good work.’

Moreover, our NGO’s work also centers around
teenage girls. In the past, we organized a 3 days 2
nights camp or full-day workshop for students age
13 to 17 years old. The topics we covered were
healthy relationship, assertive communication,
career goals, sex education, and building
confidence. We believe that such topics are vital for
students to discuss because they will give them a
fun, interactive and safe space to learn and discuss
about topics that are not usually covered in formal
education. Consequently, we have faith that such
programs will help reduce social problems among
our girls.

To reach out to more audience, we also have our
own Instagram page and Facebook where we will

A Warrior Within
Your Inner Self

As I open the dusty box in the attic, a familiar
faded picture connected me to my past. I
could not fathom the hardships I have felt in
the past, those gloomy days and stormy
nights. Drifting in a world of fear and
endlessness, days seem longer than the
nights. Being love-stricken, I used to
succumb to his words until I no longer cared
for what I believe. I thought I should be
patient as these will come to pass one day:
there will be a change within him one day. I
masqueraded my disillusionment through my
imaginary positivity, holding on to the
fractured as long as I could. I feared the
disappointment and disdain from everyone
should I reveal the truth. I could not fathom
the worst that could happen as those ringing
words pierce into my heart. Hence, I continue
masquerading, hiding my sorrows behind a
veil of smiles.

8

A Warrior Within Your Inner Self

One day, I could no longer stand it. I took my
courage to be emancipated from the
brokenness and sadness that has been
accumulating for long. My eyes have been
opened, and truth has been revealed to me. I
had to be strong to survive and keep going.
Suddenly, I no longer feel weak. Standing
firm, I was able to see afar. A vision and
dream came upon my mind as I stood upon
both feet. I am no longer dependent on
anyone but myself, my inner strength sourced
within my soul.

I take another fresh sip and begin to feel glad
that everything is over now. A breeze of
victorious joy fell upon me. My days have
never been as fresh as today: I have overcome
and won. Nothing could ever crush my spirit
again, for I am strong and nothing could
enslave me again.

BREAKING
BARRIERS

Society revolved around misogynistic mindsets
where we were taught how we should act or
behave. But through modernisation, the world

is constantly progressing and striving for
equality. Therefore, you shouldn’t limit yourself
to what society expects of you. You shouldn’t

be constricted by social barriers nor social
conformity. Speak your truth and mind. Focus
on individuality, be free and express yourself.

You deserve to be heard.

Succumbed to the winds of challenges,
The torrents of rain,
Standing still,
Unwavered,
Fragile but determined,

As I gazed upon the clouds,
Hanging in the skies,
Behold, a bird,
Soaring high the unreachable skies,
Out of the clear blue skies,
Free atrocities and dismay,
A vision of hope,
A vision of future,

Women need not be afraid to voice out their

Unbeknownst to them, that you are unbothered,
Never bow down to slander and walk in shame,
Wake up the tiger in you and feel assured.
Advance two steps when push back once,
Y settle for less when you are worth more,
Soar high in the sky, swim deep in the sea,
The possibilities are endless for you to explore.
Understand that you are unique and worthy,
Deflect negativity and reflect positivity,
Embrace your true self and identity,
Never hide behind a mask cowardly.
The radiant arrows all point to you,
Valiantly fight for the goals you pursue,
One day you will see your breakthrough,
Leaving those who created issues for you.
U may fall and get hurt along the way,
Never give up and don't stray away,
The scar formed from your fall each day,

Struggles

One, Two
Little Women

Worn, ragged. Exhausted from work, perhaps. But
there was something more I recognized in the face
of that woman - her complexion carried the weight
of something that made her skin sag, dull.

Was it anger? Wrath?

It was menacing, gravitating. I could almost see a
fragment of myself in her - like a familiar reflection
on a troubled, clouded surface of a lake.

With so little of her that I knew, so limited was my
knowledge of her story, I wondered. I wondered
what guzzled the last bits of warm light in her pale
blue eyes, what drained the rouge her drab and
muted cheekbones wore, what clutched her quiet
fingers to lay still on her lap, as if there was nothing
more they could reach out to. Not now, not ever.

21

One, Two Little Women

I could ask, but somewhere deep, buried within the
remnants of my soul, I knew. I knew that worn,
ragged look anywhere. The weight of something
that made her skin sag, dull. I knew.
It wasn’t anger. Nor was it wrath. It was
helplessness. It was defeat. I knew that much, for
we were both just two little women, trudging
through life’s tides that were merciless and ever-
changing.

Story About A Woman

A girl was born in 1960 in Malaysia. Since young,
she has needed to handle all the house chores and
take care of her little brother as her mother had
passed away after giving birth to her brother. Under
the influence of a patriarchal society, she was not
allowed to receive better education as her father
always mentioned that “It is not important for girls to
be educated as they will marry one day.” The girl
that I mentioned above is my mom.

I still remember she told me about her experience
during the tragedy of May 13, 1969. She told me
that during that time, all her brothers had been sent
to a safer place to prevent them from being
sacrificed in the riot and with the purpose of
continuing their family line.

24

Story About A Woman

However, due to her gender, she was forced to stay at her
house which was in a high-risk area. Every day she
needed to live in hiding to avoid death. She sometimes
felt it was unfair but could only endure silently. After
graduating from high school, she also dreamed of
continuing to study in university, but because she was a
girl, her father refused to support her in pursuing her
education at a university. Therefore, she could only devote
herself to work immediately. Even at work, she still got
unfair treatment.

She knows that women will still be discriminated against
in society even though people are more and more open-
minded now as the discrimination towards women has
been embedded for a long time. Thus, she has always
advised me to study hard, because education is the only
way to change people's thinking. She also often instils a
truth in me that girls must have their careers to be
respected. This sounds very unreliable, but it is also what
she learned from her experience. Hence, the most
important thing is that girls must have the right mindset. If
they do not fight for their rights, how can we expect
society to have respect for women?

CHECK

My mother once told me,

“My love the world is dark”

I didn’t understand her warning

To the streets, I took my art

My father said, “be careful .

You know we got your back.”

I smiled and waved carelessly

Told them I’ll be back.

To wave again, I turned around

I watched my mother on the ground

Pleading my aunt

She set me free.

I didn’t understand

I didn’t see.

Some called them careless.

Others called them weak.

To set a girl out to the world

“It’s dangerous”

So many things we’d see.

What about everyone else walking around

Why are they treated with specialty?

To be seen and not heard,

What standards? ~Haseenah Casseer

SPEAK OUT
Content warning: Sexual harassment

“Make school a safer place” has been a hot topic
on social media for the past few weeks. This
campaign started because a high school girl named
Ain Husniza spoke up about her male teacher who
was making rape jokes during PE lessons. The
teacher said “since the laws guard minors against
sexual harassment, why not we rape those who are
above 18 and not minors?” which resulted in the
majority of the boys bursting out in laughter while the
girls fell into an awkward silence. I could resonate
with the girls' sentiments right away when I watched
the Tiktok video even though I was absent when the
incident occurred. Uncomfortable, irritated and
embarrassed were the words that came to mind. But
what could a 17-year-old student do to defend
herself and other girls without looking audacious,
given the prejudice that some people have that if a
girl speaks then she is an attention seeker? This
mentality has been normalised for decades to the
point where girls are taught that they are somehow
‘destined’ to put up with lewd jokes.

27

SPEAK OUT

One may question whether this campaign is
important. Before we address the question, we have
to look at the backlash that Ain had to bear for
starting this campaign. A lot of people downplayed
this incident and even the deputy IGP had brushed it
off as a joke. Her schoolmates also have sent out
rape threats and malicious comments to her. There
are also men who are irritated with this movement
trying to diminish this situation by remarking “girls
nowadays are weak compared to the old days” or
“this is too feminist” as if speaking out against rape is
unimportant.

On the bright side, we can see that this movement
has given girls the courage to speak of their past
experiences with sexual harassment which brings this
topic to the public eye. A lot of women, as well as
men, NGOs, influencers and celebrities, have taken
part in this movement to amplify Ain’s voice in making
not just school a safer place, but the entire nation as
a whole.

28

SPEAK OUT

This movement may serve as a catalyst for victims of
this heinous act to end their silence and thus
involving them to fight against sexual assault, be it in
workplaces, schools or even households. When
society begins to be more aware, we are able to
foster a safer environment and shelter for the
oppressed to seek security. In addition, this
movement also enables women to embrace and uplift
one another despite their differences.

But who should hold the blame? When victims open
up about their experiences with harassment or rape,
the ignorants who listen to this would already assign
the blame onto the victims. Women have been
gaslighted into believing that it’s their fault for being
assaulted because they chose to wear something
revealing or went out alone or they were too drunk
and this situation worsens when people choose to
become enablers for those assaulters. It’s not the
victim’s fault if she was raped like it's not a person’s
fault for getting murdered.

29

SPEAK OUT

Humankind should stand in solidarity to put this
problem to an end by reforming the educational and
justice institutions. Educators have to be aware of the
influence that they have in their words since they
hold the most power in shaping the mentality of
society. Inappropriate jokes and cat-calling should
not be normalised because these actions could be
the driving force for people to contribute to this
unspeakable act. As we try to combat harassment
effectively, governments must do their best to
establish laws and regulations that have more severe
punishments so that offenders would be discouraged
from trying to carry out their ill intentions.

Movements that involve empowering women should
be taken more seriously in a constant manner.
Women are entitled to be valued as persons and not
an object to pleasure men. Women empowerment is
far from a mechanism of women wanting to start a
war against men but rather, it is a tool to eradicate
the inequality between men and women in society.

30

SPEAK OUT

Women want the same rights as men when it comes
to the matter of duty, wage, education and other
things when their qualifications meet the
requirements of those positions. They do not want to
be treated differently by society just because of
internalized misogyny and sexism. Taylor Swift used
to say “there is a different vocabulary for men and
women. When a man does something, it is strategic,
but when a woman does the same thing it’s
calculated. A man is allowed to react, a woman can
only over-react”. There are millions more who share
the same experience as Ain so I would like to urge
people to be more supportive of such movements for
the betterment of women’s future.

Do you know what they said?

When they found me on the cold tile floor?

“The house needs sweeping;

I walked the hallway laughing

“What do you think you’re doing?

A girl needs to be seen not heard”

When I went into the kitchen

“Finally. You belong behind the stove”

I fought my way through it

Gender
Discrimination In

The Workplace

Women often face discrimination in the workplace.

It is true that women find it tougher to secure a job
when compared to men. Or even when they are
employed, they tend to work in low-quality jobs in
vulnerable conditions, and there is little
improvement forecast in the near future. This
situation is more commonly seen in third world
countries.

It is often heard that the employer will choose to
employ a man rather than a woman because
women tend to have their own family and get
pregnant in the next few years, which will likely
disrupt their work. The reason that women are less
likely to be promoted is the same as the above
mentioned.

33

Gender Discrimination In The Workplace

Other reasons that stop women from getting
employed might be the lack of transportation and
the need for women to balance between family
and work. These problems are less likely to bother
men.
The lack of employment among women causes
them to be highly dependent on their spouse
financially.
However, studies show that women are actually
more productive than men as they complete 10%
extra work when compared to men given the same
time.

34

She/Her

Content warning: Profanity

She’s a slut

She’s a bitch

She’s a whore

She’s pregnant at 16? What a slut.

NO SHE IS NOT. Getting pregnant, being in many
relationship, leaked nudes or whatever it is, does
not give someone the rights to be called those
names. What if she was raped that got her
pregnant? What if she was raped by her own family
member or her boyfriend she loved? It's always her
fault and never his. Do people even know how
traumatizing is it? How it affects a woman
mentally? NO YOU DON’T KNOW then why
unnecessarily call names and blame the victim?

35

She/Her

Getting into a relationship after each relationship
failed doesn’t mean she’s a slut. Is it wrong for a
girl to believe in love even after one failed? Funny
thing, no man gets called SLUT if he has been in
many relationships, right? That's exactly how unfair
it is.

Man, she got her nudes leaked? SUCH A WHORE.

Is it wrong for her to send nudes to her partner
whom she loves and trusts will keep it to
themselves? Don’t blame the girl but blame the
person who leaked it for violating her privacy by
sending her nudes to people without her consent?

It is time for everyone to stop blaming the victim
and start respecting everyone regardless of what
they did or who they are.

BBUURRNNSS

Harmony and peace,
are what my subconscious always prioritise.

But you are indeed a wonder,
the thought of your thinking sends diesel to me,

and ignites my flame of fury.
It burns me from within.
I ask myself,
why am I so angry,

and I realise I am not angry at this mere individual;
I am angry,

at the system,
the system which oppresses certain people.

And I am covered in burns.
But when I look at the mirror,
I see the scars from my growing up,
and the scars of everyone in this.

And then,
I hear ‘Your Power’ by Billie Eilish,

it dampens the flame,
and the damp tears my eyes.

I cry,
not only for me,
but for everyone in this.
May we heal,

breathe,
and grow stronger,
stronger than such evil forces.
You are not alone,
we are in this together.

AUTHOR'S DESCRIPTION

This piece is a sequel to the previous two pieces, '8th
Wonder of the World' and 'Towering in Ignorance',
whose backstory is: I met a guy online who claims he
supports gender equality but his statements left me
'huh?', and after having so many discussions with him
until arthritis comes knocking on my door, I realised that
we will never reach an agreement, and so I gave up.
However, our conversations provoked many emotions in
me, and hence I wrote this piece. ps: oh wow, didn't
know an online encounter could led me to writing
poems, thank you? pps: if you saw this, *nervous
laugh*, I ain't talking about you, *points to the sun*

wow, good day today huh

Encouragement

WomenYou always deserve this,

All humans are equal and capable to do anything
they put their minds to, including women. Both

genders deserve equality in all aspects.

Women, sometimes or frequently, you will face
gender discrimination issues such as different
treatments, gender stereotypes, rights being
violated due to your gender, and so on. However,
remember that this is never a norm. Stand up and
say no to them! Don’t be afraid just because you
are a woman or girl. Consistently empowering
yourself with skills and knowledge, because these
are always your base to fight for gender equality.

You always deserve this, women

Men, you may always think that gender equality
and women empowerment is not related to you
and male is not even the target for this issue.
However, remember that you are also part of the
gender! Think from this perspective, what if one
day, you are the one who are discriminated due to
your gender, what will you feel? You may think that

women should familiarize themselves with
discrimination because it is a culture. But do you

know that in long-term, this will affect their
emotional and mental health? It is time for you to
take some actions to achieve gender equality.

Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
requires a substantial time, efforts and initiatives in
order to be achieved. This cannot be done by one
party but both men and women, old and young as

well as everyone in this society.
