READING
Activity 3
Read the following text.

Hi! I’m Bram, brother of Ben; you know him, don’t you? I’m in the 3nd semester at the
university now, studying quantum physics. I’d like to tell you about my experience when I was
your age.

When I was in the senior high, I joined the youth red cross and science group as my two
extra- curricular programs. In the red cross we learned about how to help people who needed first-
aid help, especially people who were injured in traffic accidents. In the science group we learned
how to conduct scientific research, how to write a good paper, and how to think scientifically.
From their two organization, I got lots of experience without losing my school grades because I
always ended up first or second in my class. In addition, I joined many sciences and won prizes.
Incredible, isn’t it?

But now I’m in the university, and you know what? The experiences that I got from my
senior high extra-curricular activities are very helpful in my campus life. I know how to get along
with other students from other provinces who have to very different cultures, without ever making
any discrimination. I became more caring for others and for the poor. I always have high self-
confident in doing something and working in a team.

In my first year, I was chosen as leader of my class because I gave the best speech. I’m
now a member of the Student Executive Board in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science.
I’m enjoying a great fame in the campus; every student and lecturer knows me very well. None of
my extra-curricular activities interferes with my academic performance and I always get good
grades. I also help my friends who have difficulties, especially in quantum mechanics; well, you
probably don’t know quantum mechanics yet. I have written some scientific papers too, and
presented them to various audiences.

Well, guys, I must really go, now. But I’m going to say that the extra-curricular activities
in your senior high will really give you useful pay-offs when you go to the university later. Take
my word for it, and have good fun with your extra-curricular programs.

Then, discuss the following questions.
1. What does Bram talk about in
