Topic Sentences
Supporting Sentences
Countable Singular
In very rare cases, some is used with a countable singular noun. It is a very special use
and we use it very rarely. It is enough for us to know this use.
I’m looking for some book (a certain book).
He is some boy (a certain boy) for most of us here.
b. Showing One Item
There is a cat in the hat.
We have a cat and some chickens at home.
In the above examples, we emphasize the fact that there is one cat (not more that
one) in the hat or that we have one cat (not more than one) at home. Very often, the
meaning of one item overlaps with the meaning of the first mention.
c. Generic
A cat is mammal.
Though this use is relatively limited, the generic a is quite different from the first
mention. Nor do we emphasize the oneness of the cat.
Very often, it is not important for us to know the different meanings of a/an.
However, it is important that we use a/an for countable singular nouns when they are
needed.

INFORMATION
The Usage of a / an, the, and some
1. A / An
In the last lesson we studied about countable and uncountable nouns. We learned that the
use of these nouns has agreement with the use of determiners. In this lesson, we will study the use
of determiners, especially the indefinite and definite articles. These are a/an, the, and some.
a. First Mentioned
A cat came out of a house. The cat turned around the house and disappeared quickly.
When we mention a countable singular noun for the first time, we use the indefinite
article a. In the above example, eat and house are mentioned for the first time. We must
use the article a. If, for example, we use the definite article the, our sentence would not be
very good.
2. The
1. Mentioned before
A cat came out of a house. The cat turned around the house and disappeared
quickly. The cat left the house to hunt for mice.
The use of the in the cat and the house shows that cat and house have been
mentioned before. In the above example, they are the second and the third mentions. Here,
if we don’t use the, or we use a, our sentence will not be good.
2. Convention
The earth goes round the sun.
The President will visit our town next month.
Medan is the capital city of North Sumatra.
We usually use the with certain nouns because of previous conventions. Usually,
the noun is a unique thing (There is only one). We only have one earth, one sun, one
president, and one capital city. So, we use the, every time we mention them.
Included into the conventions are:
Look at the star in the sky.
Do you prefer the cinema or the theatre?
My sister Dina likes to study while listening to the radio.
3. Adjectival Construction
First, we use the with the superlative adjective.
What is the highest mountain in Indonesia?
We will be eating at the most expensive restaurant in town.
Second, we use the with the descriptive adjective to show a group of persons or
people.
The rich should help the poor.
We must also think of the unemployed and the disabled.
4. Names of Countries and Nationalities
First, we use the with the names of certain countries. In the agreement with the
predicate, we use the verb for singular subjects.
The Philippines is an Asian country; the Netherlands is European.
We know that the United States of America has high technologu. So does the Soviet
Union.
Second we use the with the names of nationalities. In this use, we refer the as group
of people. We usually use the predicate for plural subjects.
The Japanese are famous for their productivity.
The French have a high taste in food and fashion.
3. Some
a. Countable Plural
Some is often used with plural countable nouns. In this use, some means a number
of. In bahasa Indonesia this means “beberapa”. Pay attention to the agreement with the
predicate.
Some people like to wear strange clothes.
I have some used books which are still good enough to read.
b. Uncountable
Some is also often used with uncountable nouns. In this use, it means an amount of.
We do not have a good equivalent for this in Bahasa Indonesia. We may use some
measurement unit. The agreement is with predicates for a singular subject.
Some food was left on the table last night.
We still have some money which is enough for all of us.
HOTS
Igloos or snow houses are shelters constructed from blocks of snow, generally in the form
of a dome. Although igloos are usually associated with all Inuit, they were predominantly
constructed by people of Canada’s Central Arctic and Greenland’s Thule area. Inuit people tended
to use snow to insulate their houses. The temperature outside maybe as low as - 45ºC, but on the
inside the temperature may range from -70 ºC to - 16 ºC when warmed by body heat alone.
There were three traditional types of igloos. The smallest one was constructed as a
temporary shelter, usually used for one or two nights. There were built and used during hunting
trips, often on open sea ice. Next in size was the semi-permanent, intermediate-size for family
dwelling. This is a single room dwelling that housed one or two families. The largest of the igloos
is normally built-in groups of two. These might have had up to five rooms and housed up to 20
people. A large igloo might have been constructed from several igloos attached by tunnels, giving
common access to the outside. These were use to hold community feast and traditional dances.

YOGYAKARTA DE ARCA STATUE MUSEUM
De Arca Statue Museum is the first and the biggest statue museum in Indonesia. The
museum was officially inaugurated in Desember 2014. It is situated next to De Mata Trick Eye
Museum. As the name suggests, this museum is home to a collector of statue of famous figures,
built in 1 : 1 scale. Like Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum, the statue, created by a renowned
Jogja artist, Dunadi, were made to resemble the original figures, with similar costumes and
gestures. These statues are not made of wax, but of resin (the sap produced by certain plants) to
adapt to the climate condition in Jogja.
The museum consists of three zones: national figures, world presidents, and world
figures. Entering the museum, we arrive at the zone of national figures and are welcomed by
several war heroes. Cut Nyak Dhien, R.A. Kartini, General Soedirman, and several other heroes,
seen sitting or standing comfortably. Meanwhile, at the end of the zone of national figures, the
painting maestro, Affandi, also appeared as much as ease as the others. Wearing a red T-shirt
and sarong, he sits holding his smoking pipe. He seems as if he’s paying attention to every
activity happening in the room.
Leaving the zone of national figures, visitors will enjoy a big Spiderman statue. The
statue is unique and different from the rest. Instead of posing ensnaring his enemy with his
spiderweb, this Spiderman merely sits, crossing his legs on top of a globe that appears to be
Jumpy due to the heavy load it holds up. Interestingly, he wears a blangkon (Javanese traditional
headdress for men) complete with batik cloth covering his legs. The statue of the Javanese
version of Spiderman is the one leading us to the zone of world presidents. In this zone, there
are several well-known Head of State, such as Megawati, B.J. Habibie, Quee Elizabeth II, and
even Obama, seen standing gallantly.
After taking photographs with the presidents, the zone of world figures has been waiting
behind Mas Javanese Spiderman. In the zone, there are several statues of famous film characters,
such as Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and several other famous figures who have always been
talked about around the world, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Jackie Chan, Michael Jackson, Hitler,
and even Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa. This zone looks different from the previous ones. In
addition to the wider room, the fountain in the center and the decoratic white maple leaves are
what made this zone more comfortable. Visiting De Arca is really enjoyable. The statue are not
alive, but they at least halp people especially children, to know a bit closer the great figures
behind past extraordinary events. This museum also allows many people to meet their idols.

TUGU JOGJA The Most Popular Landmark In Yogyakarta
Tugu Jogja is the most popular landmark of Yogyakarta. this monument is located right
in the center of the crossroads between Mangkubumi, Soedirman, A.M. Sangaji and Diponegoro
Roads. The Tugu Jogja, which almost 3 centuries old has a very deep meaning and it holds some
history records of Yogyakarta.
Tugu Jogja was built around one year after the construction of the Yogyakarta Kingdom.
At the early time of its construction, it clearly decribed the philosophy of the unity of God’s
creatures, which means the spirit of togehterness of common people and the authorities to fight
colonialism. In Javanese terms, the spirit of togetherness is called golong gilig and is clearly
defined in the construction of the monument the pole is of gilig (cylinder) form and the top part
is golong (rounded). This monument was known as Tugu Golong-Gilig.
in details, the monument was originally constructed in the form of a cylindrical pole in
a conicle, upwards facing shape. The base is an encircling fence, while the top is rounded. The
preliminary height of the monument was 25 meters.
Everything changed, when, on Monday, 10 June 1867, a big earthquake in Yogyakarta
ruined the monument. the collapse of the monument was a transition time when the unity was
not really reflected in the monument.
The situation changed totally when in 1889 the Dutch goverment renovated the
monument. The monument was constructed as a square with each side being decorated with a
kind of inscription, containing the names of people who were involved in the renovation. The
top portion is no longer rounded but pointed. The height of the monument is also lower, namely
15 meters. Since then, this monument was also known as De Witt Paal or Tugu Pal Putih (white
pole monument).
The renovation of the monument was actually a tactic used by the Dutch colonials to
erase the philosophy of togetherness between common people and king. Judging from the result
of the struggle afterwards, however, the effort did not seem to be successful. The Tugu Jogja is
so identified with Yogyakarta that it makes many university students from outside if Yogyakarta
express their happiness after graduation day bay hugging and kissing the Tugu Jogja. That may
also express their love for Yogyakarta as they are about to leave soon, but at the same time they
promise to return to this city.

A one-hour drive from my house is the most beautiful area in the south of New Zealand.
It is called “The Green Park”. People from different parts of New Zealand and different countries
often come here on holiday.
The Green Park is a very large area of natural forest and there are a lot of animals that
live there. Horses and donkeys walk everywhere and sometimes you can even see deer, cows,
and ducks crossing the road.
What I like about The Green Park is that the colours of the forest change during the year.
In autumn, the leaves are red and gold and in the spring everything is purple and different shades
of green. The trees are always colourful and different.
Tourists often prefer to go to the small villages in The Green Park with pretty houses to
stay in and traditional restaurants to dine in. Visitors are not allowed to camp in any part of The
Green Park. I love to walk along the river, because there you can see the true heart of the forest.
1. What is The Green Park?
2. What does the third paragraph tell us about?
3. How can the visitor enjoy the true heart of the forest?

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, which is located in the north east of Sydney.
Brisbane has grown bigger and bigger and swallowed surrounding cities, like Logan,
Beenleigh, and Redcliffe.
Thirty years ago, Brisbane was considered a big country town because the city was a
sleepy place. The buildings were old and classical because they were built in the colonial era.
Others were wooden houses. High-rises were very rare. Skyscrapers were only found in the
inner city and the roads were not crowded.
However Brisbane has grown fast in these three decades. The warm weather in
Queensland encourages people to move to Brisbane, in south-east Queensland. It’s not
surprising that Brisbane has expanded towards both Caloundra and the Gold Coast. In the west,
it stretches to Toowoomba. The growth of Brisbane reminds people of Los Angeles. That’s
why people call Brisbane Bris Angeles.
4. Which state does Brisbane belong to?
5. What does the ‘high-rise’ mean? (paragraph 3)
6. Why did people call it a sleepy place thirty years ago?
