Preface

About the book

Shubharambha Social Studies series is a thoughtfully prepared

series of text books for school children. The series has two sets of books:
Primary Level – KG to V and Secondary Level VI to X. It is designed
especially for the children of private and boarding schools. The series is
purely based on the curriculum prescribed by Curriculum Development
Center (CDC), Government of Nepal.

While preparing the series, my own long social studies teaching and
social studies text books writing experiences, present day social-economic-
political environment and above all children’s psychology have been my
guide lines. I hope the series will be effective in enhancing and consolidating
the children’s creativity and interest in learning social studies in the present
day environment. I am also confident that the series will fulfill CDC/
Government of Nepal’s objectives and address the needs and expectations
of students and teachers alike.

Let me introduce myself
My name is Priya. I am six years old.
Now, one by one I would like you to
introduce my family members.

I am very happy to have my grand-parents.
They are my father's father and my father's
mother.

The name of my grand-father is Hom Bahadur. The name of my
grand-mother is Hira Maya. My mother also has parents. They
too are my grand-parents. I love them very much.

They are my father and mother. My father's
name is Anand and my mother's name is
Mansi. They are my parents.
My parents love me very much .

Note to the teacher: Taking the lesson as a guideline, students should be guided and
motivated to introduce their family members and name the relationship through class
participation.

father's brother. The name of my aunt is Puja. They have two

uncle is my mother's brother. I go to my maternal uncle's house
when I have holidays.

I also have one elder sister. Her name is Preeti. I also have a cute

Materials needed: Pieces of white chart paper, green, red and
brown colours, marker and glue.

Draw an outline of a tree with trunk. Within the outline of the
tree, draw several apples from top of the tree to bo"om leaving
the trunk. The apples should be big enough to paste photos or
write the names of family members. Colour tree with green,
apples with red and trunk with brown.

Paste the photo at the centre of each apple or write the name
of each family member in the centre of the apple.

Put the photos or write the names of young family members
near the top of tree. The next row should be followed by parents
and grandparents. The individual family tree can be displayed in
the classroom.

to see my parents sad and unhappy. So one
day, I asked my parents to teach me how to
take care of my belongings. Now this is the

Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

learn many good habits with the help of their good friends.

My name is Riya. I want to tell you something
about my friends.

Muskan, Binit, Muna, Bipul, Nisha and Deepak
are very good friends of mine. Do you want to
know why? Muskan, Binit and Muna
helped their friends Bipul, Nisha
and Deepak to change their bad habit and become
good. Let me tell you how it happened.

Muskan: Bipul, Why do you always come late in
the school? It is a very bad habit. I will
report to the Principal as I am the class
monitor.

Bipul: Sorry! Muskan, I always get up late. So I
am late for school.

Muskan: Bipul, don’t worry. From tomorrow,
get up early. I will come to your house and we
will catch the school bus in time. You will not be
late to school any more.

Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

Today, Astha and Samrat are very happy. There is their uncle’s
marriage ceremony. Many guests are invited to their home.
Their parents have asked them to speak respectfully with the
guests.

Note to the teacher: This lesson is a guideline to teach the young ones, how to show
respect towards the elders. The objective of this lesson will be more effective through

Bandana is nine years old. She
lives with her father, mother,
brother and sister. Her brother is
six years old and sister is only two
years old. Bandana is the eldest
sister. She loves her brother and
sister very much. It is early in the
morning in Bandana’s house.

Mother: Bandana, I hear your little sister crying. Go and help
her. I am busy in the kitchen.

Bandana: Little sister, why are you crying? Come to sister. I
will wash your face and comb your hair. Now, you
look pretty like a doll.

Mother: Bandana, change your sister’s cloth and bring her
in the kitchen to drink milk.

Bandana: Yes mother. Kriti, my dear sister's are you hungry?

Kriti: Yes sister.

Mother: Bandana, help your sister to drink milk and give her
some biscuits to eat.

Note to the teacher: The lesson is just an example to show love and care towards
the young ones. There are many other ways .The best way children can learn and get
interested is through their own involvement.

3Lesson Colourful Clothes

Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

identify and name the different types of clothes.
know who wears what type of clothes in the family.

I am Ritu. I live in a big family. We all eat the
same food but we wear different types of
clothes. So, I asked my mother to tell me the
names of different types of clothes worn by
my family members and by our neighbours.
This is what my mother told me;

Mother: Ritu, your grandfather and
grandmother are the eldest
members of our family.
So your grandfather likes
to wear Daura-Suruwal,
coat and Dhaka topi. Your
grand-mother likes to wear
Gunyu, Chaubandi Cholo,
Khasto and Patuka.

Ritu: What about your,
father, your uncle and
aunt?

Mother: We are not so younger like you. So
father and uncle wear shirt, pant, coat and tie
when they go to of"ce. They look very smart
in these clothes.

Note to the teacher: Ask the students to name the different types of clothes their family
members wear. Ask them if they can name some of the traditional clothes worn by
different castes. For this, students can take the help of their parents/guardian.

Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

know the different types of works family members have to do at home.
understand that we all should help one another in the family.

My name is Juneli. I live with my grandfather,
grandmother, father, mother and younger
brother.

We have a happy family. We all help one
another in our family.

My mother cooks
delicious food
for us. She also
washes our clothes and cleans the
house. My grandmother helps my
mother to cut and wash vegetables
and clean the kitchen.

I also help my mother to bring plates
and glasses when it is time to eat food.

My father works in the of"ce. He
earns money for the whole family.
He helps my mother to bring
vegetables from the market. He
also helps me to do my homework.
He also looks after the younger
brother when my mother is busy
in the kitchen.

Note to the teacher: Talk about the various types of works we have to do in the family.
Encourage them to help their family members by doing the work according to their age and

5Lesson Helpful Neighbours

Objectives

understand why neighbours are helpful to us.

My name is Mangal because I was born on (Tuesday). I live
with my family in a small village. The people who live in my
village are good and helpful. They are my neighbours. We all
help each other. We all live happily in our small village.

He is Birbahadur. Everyone calls him
buba because he is the eldest member
in our village. He grows vegetables.
We all like to buy fresh vegetables
from his farm. He is very happy with
all of us.

She is
Phulmaya. She has kept cows. She
is a milkmaid. Early in the morning
she brings milk in our houses. So

we all can
drink milk
and tea
in the morning. Sometimes she gives
us fresh homemade dahi, which is so
delicious.

He is Ali. He is a tailor. He is good at
making dresses. He is very hardworking

Note to the teacher: The students should be made to understand the meaning of
‘Neighbour’. They should know the names of their neighbours and the works they do.
The works are limited in the lesson. The teacher should "nd out many other works and
mention in the class orally and visually.
