My name is Sujit. I am six years old. I have a
sister who is two years old. I always get help
from all my elders. I am a very lucky boy.

Friends! I am too young to do some of the
things. So, I request my elders to help me.
These are the ways my elders help me when I
need:

Mother helps me to take bath and trim my nails. I also help my
mother by folding my school uniform and keeping my shoes
and socks at a proper place.

Father helps me to put cover
in my books and copies. He
also helps me to put on my
school uniform and takes me
to school in the morning.

I help father by opening the
gate when he comes home
after of"ce and to put water
in the garden.

Grandfather helps me to

Note to the teacher: Co-relate the lesson with the students thinking. Ask them which examples

me back home from school. I help my grandfather too. I give
him newspaper and his spectacles every morning.

Grandmother helps me to put
tif"n in my tif"n box and to
"ll water in my water bottle. I
help my grandmother to water
the kitchen garden and to carry
vegetables grown in our kitchen
garden.

My elder brother helps me to
do my homework. He also helps
to arrange my school bag and
polish my shoes. I help my elder brother to arrange his books
and copies lying on the table and throw litters from his room
before mother comes.

Uncle helps me to cut my
hair by taking me to the
barber. He also takes me to
swimming every weekend.

Aunt takes me to the
market on her scooter to
buy my school books and
copies. She also helps me
in drawing and colouring. I
help aunt by looking after
my cousin-sister when she
is busy.

I also have a younger sister. I am older than her. So, I want to
help my baby sister by combing her hair, washing her hands
when dirty, putting shoes and socks, carrying her to the garden
and giving her toys to play.

Today we will study about the different types of landforms of
earth.

Student: Ma'm, what are the different types of landforms?

Ma'm : They are plain, hill and mountains

This is the picture of
plain. The landform
which is low and #at
is called plain. It is
called Terai in our
country. It is very hot.
It is very good for
growing crops and
vegetables. Fruits like
banana, mango, litchi
and papaya grow in Terai. The road is easy. So it is easy to go
from one place to another.

Anil Chaudhary: Ma'm, my maternal uncle's house is in Terai.
I go there during holidays. I go "shing in the nearby pond with
my friends. We go to the market riding on rickshaws and tangas.
I go to farmland riding on a bullock cart with my grandfather.

Note to the teacher: The lesson will be more clear and interesting provided diagrams,
pictures and charts are used to show different types of landforms. Ask who lives in plain,
hill and mountain. Let students talk about the place they live.

76 Social Studies & Creative Arts Book 1

Ma'm: Anil, we all are happy that your maternal uncle's home
is in Terai.

very cold in hill.
Fruits like guava,
pears, apricots and
strawberries grow in hill. The road is not so easy like in Terai.
It is steep and narrow. One has to walk up and down. Horses,
donkeys and mules are the chief means of transport. Most of the
hills are covered with forest. They look green and beautiful.

always snow on the mountain peaks. Many tourists come to
our district to see beautiful mountains. In our school there
are trees of fruits like orange, guava and apricot. There is also
a beautiful garden with benches. When we feel cold, teachers
bring us to the garden to read. We feel warm and happy.

Very close to the school, there is a small stream. There is a
small bridge over the stream. We cross the stream through a
bridge. There will be lots of water in the stream when it rains.
Nearby the stream there is sloppy land where people grow
crops, vegetables and fruits.

One day, I asked
my father, “Father
how can crops,
vegetables and
fruits grow on the
sloppy land?” My
father said, “Farmers
cut down the sloppy
land and make it
a #at land. Big #at
land is called Tar.
So, it will be easy
to grow crops and
vegetables.” I am
very happy to know
about it. Now, I can
tell my friends what a Tar is.

There is also a stone water sprout near my school. People
collect drinking water from here. On the way home after school,
my friends and I like to drink fresh water of stone water sprout.
People are not allowed to wash and take bath here. The water
is only for drinking and cooking food. I love my school. It is

Some of the big houses have one
storey or many storeys. The houses

having many storeys
are called buildings.
Big houses and

interesting ask the students how a house is built by the mason.

84 Social Studies & Creative Arts Book 1

The houses built in the villages are mostly small. They look
different than the big houses. In the village areas, houses are
made up of wood, bamboo and mud. Many of them have
thatched roofs. They do not have many rooms. They use wood
instead of brick. They use mud instead of cement. They use
bamboo and straw to build the roof. Some of the houses in
the village are two-storeyed.

In mountain areas, it is very cold, windy. It also receives snow
fall. Here, the houses are built with stones and wood. They
have small windows and doors to keep the house warm.

In areas where there is heavy rainfall, houses have slopping
roofs. so-that the rainwater can run down easily.

Teacher: Kiran, what are you drawing?

Kiran: Firstly, I am drawing the shape of my school. Then,
I will draw doors and windows and colour them
blue and white. I will make the walls like brick and
colour red. I will colour green for the roof of my
school.

Teacher: Your drawing looks quite good. Keep it up !

Kiran: Thank you! Now, I want to draw the things around
my school. Oh! I did not know that there were so
many things around my school. First let me draw
swing and colour orange. Near the swing there is
slide. I will colour it yellow. There are some trees
around the school building. I will colour them green.
There is a big play ground in front of the school
building where there is a basketball court. There
are dustbins at several places. There is a hall at the
side of the basketball court. There is toilet near the
hall. There are brick walls all around my school and
a big school gate with school sign board above.

Teacher: Kiran, I have seen all the drawings of class one, but I
like your drawing the most. You have not forgotten
to draw any of the things around your school. Why
have you not coloured some of the things?

Kiran: I will colour them at the last. First, I will "nish all the
drawings. Teacher, can I draw sky, hills, clouds and
birds that I can see above my school? They look so
beautiful.

Teacher: Yes, why not? They too have made your school's
surrounding beautiful.

We rub the whiteboard after each period before the
teachers come. This is the way we make our teachers
happy.

Nitu: This is a very good idea. I will also tell my friends to do
the same in my class. Tell me some more about your
classroom.

Usha: The colour of my classroom is painted blue. There
are "fteen desks and benches. Two students sit on
each bench. We never write, scratch and spill water
on the desk. Our teacher says it is very bad to litter
the classroom. We should never follow bad habit. We
should always obey our teachers. There are a table and
a chair for teacher. There are yearly school calendar
and class routine on the wall near the whiteboard. Do
you also have yearly school calendar?

Nitu: Yes, we also have school calendar. It is very easy to see
when our exams, report card distribution and school
holidays are.

Usha: There are pictures, colourings, arts and crafts, charts
of domestic animals , wild animals, fruits, vegetables
and pictures of means of transport put on all the walls.
There is a small corner called teacher's corner. Teachers
decorate this corner. There is a dustbin to put litters.
So, how did you "nd my classroom?

Nitu: Very beautiful and colourful. Thank you for telling me
