Florida College System – Making a Difference One Life at a Time
DID YOU KNOW?
Chipola Junior College was a founding creator of AFC!
By the end of 1948, Florida’s emerging community college system included four publicly funded institutions —
Palm Beach Junior College, St. Petersburg Junior College, Chipola Junior College, and Pensacola Junior
College. These four junior colleges became the focus for Florida’s new approach to postsecondary education. In
October 1949, the presidents of these four institutions founded the Florida Association of Public Junior Colleges
(FAPJC), the forerunner of the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC).
Since 1949, the Association's mission and purposes have grown in scope as has the Association itself. It has
become the most inclusive higher education organization serving any college system in the nation. The AFC
is the only organization which represents all employees, presidents, and trustees associated with a college
system. Today, all 28 of the state's colleges support the work of the Association through institutional dues as do
nearly 7,500 regular and retired members through the sharing of their talents, time and energy.
AFC AT CHIPOLA
The Association is an important part of Chipola College. It is the avenue where employees of all levels –
Career, Faculty, Other Professional and Administrator – learn and share their leadership skills. The AFC
Executive Board organizes and hosts social events, professional development opportunities, community service
projects, and fundraising efforts to support these activities and more. The Association organizes and solicits
volunteers to man the Chipola Basketball Concessions Stand. Proceeds from this go to fund scholarships for AFC
members’ children and grandchildren to attend Chipola College. This year 8 students are attending Chipola on
an AFC scholarship.
AFC Member Statewide Benefits
Membership in the Association of Florida Colleges affords you access to a variety of member benefits. More

Professional Development – It was agreed to host a Faculty Workshop entitled, A Day of
Objectives, Assessments, and Accessibility. This voluntary workshop would be held on Friday,
October 11. Faculty would meet and work on their courses either individually or in
workgroups/teams. AFC would sponsor the workshop and provide snacks and lunch. Faculty
would be required to register to attend.
Dennis Everett suggested AFC sponsor some of the security training sessions which will be held
during the Spring semester.
Membership
Matt White has been working with the AFC state office to update our membership roster.
The membership committee will compare the roster to our new employee list to find out who is a
member, who isn’t a member, who qualifies for a first year paid membership, who is past their
first year and needs to join. Evelyn Ward will be sending a letter encouraging non-members to
join, plus Dr. Clemmons agreed to send out a letter of encouragement, if necessary. After the
letter campaign, non-members will be assigned to department “captains” for a personal
grassroots campaign to enroll new members.
Matt also reported yearly dues are going to be $50 per year for everyone, instead of the tier
system used previously. Current members will be grandfathered at their current rate.
Next Meeting
The next meeting will be the Fall General Meeting on September 9 at 3:00 pm in Jackson Hall
(tentatively).
Adjournment
A motion and second was made to adjourn the meeting (Matt White and Dennis Everett). Meeting
adjourned at 2:30 pm.
