Nayla then had to sleep in the terminal where she encountered two foreign men
who would break her heart. She had to work as a light technician in discotheques
where Nayla began to understand her newfound freedom. She now could decide
how to dress, hang out with whomever she wanted, and build social relationships
with anyone her age and even older. But as life grew more difficult each day, was
there any possibility for Nayla to survive?

Djenar Maesa Ayu is a well-known author and film director. Her first book Mereka Bilang Saya
Monyet! has been reprinted more than 8 times and shortlisted on Khatulistiwa Literary Award 2003.
The book has since been translated into English by Michael N. Garcia of Cornell University, with the
English translation being launched, along with Nayla, her first novel, during the 2005 Ubud literary
festival. Her second book, Jangan Main-Main (dengan Kelaminmu) (Don’t Play (with Your Genitals)),
also a compilation of eleven short stories, was nominated for the Khatulistiwa Literary Award in
2004.

Morphology of Desire gives readers a comprehensive introduction to the writings of
the internationally acclaimed Indonesian poet Dorothea Rosa Herliany. Through a
distinctive mix of striking imagery and boldness of voice, the poet sets out to dispel
many common assumptions about life and relationships.

As a woman and a poet, she is a double-outsider. Her blatant departure, in form
as well as content, from the accepted conventions of society (which intensifies
through the progression of her works) is remarkable not only in its personal and
political ramifications but in its emotional and imaginative tenor as well.

Dorothea Rosa Herliany has written more than twenty volumes of original poetry, many of which
have been translated into English. She has received numerous literary awards, including Best Poetry
Book from the Jakarta Arts Council in 2010 and Best Author from the National Language Center in
2003.

In 2006, her book of poems Santa Rosa won the Khatulistiwa Literar y Award, and in 2011, it won the
Cempaka Award for outstanding achievement by a woman. In 2000, Dorothea was chosen to be a
writer in residence in Australia, sponsored by La Trobe University and Asialink. She was also a fellow
of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung in 2009 and was the recipient of a year’s grant from DADD to live in
Germany during 2013-2014. Currently, she manages DuniaTera, a center for ar t and cultural activities
in Borobudur, Magelang.

her own path ahead. Fifteen years later, he was a respected physician with a Box
of Essential Memory, where he kept the letters and keepsakes that reminded him
of who he really was; while she was a struggling photographer carrying a Box of
Unfinished Projects, where she kept her yet unrealized goals. Through significant
changes in their society, these two kept reaching out to each other, looking
for an understanding. Spanning fifteen years and shifting between his and her
perspectives, past and present, this novel recounts the characters’ struggle to break
free fromthe pattern of repeated disappointments and explores what is gained and
what is the price to pay when we submit to other people’s expectations and when
we keep pursuing our own.

Eliza Vitri Handayani is an author and a literary translator. Her short stories have appeared in
respected Indonesian literar y outlets such as Koran Tempo, Jurnal Perempuan, Sastra Digital, as well
as in the Asia Literary Review. Her novella From Now On Everything Will Be Different was published
in Indonesia in 2014 and is now forthcoming in English. In 1999, at 16 years old, she won a national
writing-for-the-screen competition held by the National Center for Film (Pusat Perfilman Nasional). In
2004, she won the Best Young Adult Book Award from the Association of Indonesian Publishers.

Erni Aladjai earned her degree in French literature from the Hasanuddin University in Sulawesi. She
has worked as a journalist and news editor, and managed a learning institution. Her novel, Kei, took
first place in the 2011 Jakar ta Ar ts Council novel competition. Erni is also the author of Pesan Cinta

Manurung literally means “to go down,” but another meaning of Manurung is people
or objects that descend from the sky. The poems in this book are inspired by the
ancient literary work of the Bugis tribe in Sulawesi, La Galigo, which has nearly

Faisal Oddang is a young, prolific award-winning author. He was born in Wajo, 1994. Besides writing

and currently invited as a writer in residence in Berlin, Germany.

Besides writing poetry, Goenawan is famous for his Catatan Pinggir (Side Note)
essays, which has been published in 10 volumes.

This is a collection of his previously unpublished poems. Some of them are written
as recently as in 2016. Fragment is the 9th collection of his poetry. The first set of
poetry, Pariksit, was published forty-five years ago.

Goenawan Mohamad is known as the founding editor of Tempo, but he is also a poet, essayist, and
playwright. He was the first Indonesian to receive A. Teeuw Award from The University of Leiden in

out every night from a batik cloth made by a woman named Surti. These three birds
carry stories that never failed to entertain Surti. These birds often tell stories about
Jen, a guerrilla commander, a movement activist who was killed by Dutch soldiers.

Goenawan Mohamad (born in 29 July 1941) is an Indonesian poet, essayist, playwright, and editor.
He is the founder and editor of the Indonesian magazine Tempo. Mohamad is a vocal critic of the
Indonesian government, and his magazine was periodically shut down due to its criticisms. Mohamad
has won awards for his journalistic work, including the CPJ International Press Freedom Awards
(1998), the International Editor of the Year Award (1999), and the Dan David Prize (2006).

Gratiagusti Chananya Rompas was born in Jakarta, 19 August 1979. She studied English Literature
in Universitas Indonesia, Depok (2003) and received her master in The Gothic Imagination from the
University of Stirling, Scotland (2005). She is one of the founders of Komunitas Bunga Matahari, a
mailing list-based Indonesian poetry community that have embraced many poetry enthusiasts with
its catchphrase “semua bisa berpuisi” or, roughly translated, “poetry for all.” She is also involved in
Selatan, an online literary journal in Bahasa Indonesia, and Paviliun Puisi, a monthly open mic event
that is open to poets, poetry communities, and artists to showcase their works to an open-minded
audience in a casual setting.

Idrus’s best-known collection of stories, From Ave Maria To Other Roads to Rome,
from which most of the stories in this anthology were drawn, was initially published
in 1948 and has been in print ever since. Idrus wrote mostly about ordinary people
who were distinguished by some unique characteristics, circumstances, or
misfortunes. He deals with simple, humane themes.

With the eye of a journalist, Idrus combines factual reportage, either observed first-
hand or gained from those who were present, to create powerful fictional stories
that are often uncomfortably similar to real life events.

Idrus (1921–1979) is one of Indonesia’s best-known writers and is often credited for establishing
the satirical direction for the writers of his time. Through his work, his short stories especially, Idrus
introduce a new way to use the Indonesian language, strengthening it with a measure of frankness
and directness that was uncommon before his time.

The timeframe for the thirteen short stories in this book spans from before Cornelis
de Houtman’s arrival in Indonesia to the early moments of Indonesia’s independence.
Each story invites us to imagine Indonesia’s history from a unique perspective: a
former soldier who persuades his lover to kill her husband; an officer who is forced to
shoot von Imhoff; a reporter who witnesses the Puputan War; a Eurasian inspector
who tries to catch a slick rice thief; a tobacco plantation administrator who sends
away his mistress on the arrival of his European wife; and a housewife who is deeply
loved by her husband yet is having an affair with another man.

In high school, Iksaka Banu’s comics were published in Ananda magazine in 1978. However,
fatherhood and his job as an art director took his attention away from writing. It wasn’t until 2000
that he gathered the courage to continue writing. That short story was eventually published, and
since then, his stories have gained more attention. Two of his stories, ‘Rose at the Tiger Canal’ and
‘All for Indies,’ were voted in the top twenty best short stories by the Pena Kencana Literary Award in
2008 and 2009 respectively. In 2014, he won the Khatulistiwa Literary Award in the prose category.

dramatic troupe, Rendra’s “BengkelTeater”. As an actor he performed throughout Indonesia as well
as touring New York, Japan, and Korea. John was invited to the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in
2006, followed closely by an invitation to the Balinale International Film Festival, also in Bali, and
the Nor thern Territor y Writers Festival, in Darwin, Australia. He now lives and writes in his home
province.

A coming-of-age tale, a tapestry of erotic and tragic liaisons and a dreamscape
of nightmares and wonders, Ceremony is a tribute to the ceremony rich life of the
Benuaq Dayak, one of the indigenous peoples of Kalimantan.

This postmodern novel took the Indonesian literary scene by storm when it won
the Jakarta Arts Council’s novel writing competition award in 1976. Although Korrie
was relatively unknown at the time of receiving the award and had yet to establish
himself as one of Indonesia’s major literary figures, after almost four decades
Ceremony still retains its power to thrill, to awe, and to mystify its readers.

This edition is graced by an informative introduction by noted French scholar
Bernard Sellato on the rituals of the Benuaq Dayak.

Korrie Layun Rampan (1953-2015) was best known for the 357 works he has written, ranging from
literature, biography, and culture, to anthropology, sociology, science, and children’s books. He has
also translated around 100 children’s stories. His novels Ceremony and Fire Cloud Smoke won the
Jakarta Arts Council’s novel writing awards in 1976 and 1998 respectively, and in 2006, he won the
Arts Prize for literature from the Indonesian government. In 2013, Korrie received 16 literary and
journalistic awards from numerous organizations. His books have been translated into various
languages, including English, French, and Swedish. The French magazine La Banian hailed him as
Indonesia’s number one literary critic.

Kuntowijoyo’s seminal work, Sermon on the Mount is the story of one man spiritual
fulfillment. The story is told through the eyes of Barman, an older man whose son
has moved him to a luxurious vacation home in the mountains. There, he is expected
to live out the rest of his days in peace as a young and attractive woman is assigned
to care for him. Though all of his physical needs have been accounted for, Barman
himself in need of spiritual sustenance and thus begins his quest.

Kuntowijoyo was born in Yogyakarta in 1943. He began his career as a writer in college and
published his first novel in 1964. After obtaining an M.A. in American History from University of
Connecticut (1974) and a PhD in history from Columbia University (1980) he returned to Indonesia
where he founded the Center for Policy Research and Study. He was also active in the Islamic
organization Muhammadiyah, although also critical of the organization calling it a “cultural institution
without culture”. Kuntowijoyo published several novels as well as poetry and short
story anthologies. He passed away in 2005.

The Goat and the Rain is a labyrinth of a thousand existing stories, twisting and
turning itself into a giant scheme. Miftahul Abrar and Nurul Fauziah are just a few
characters of those stories trapped inside this story labyrinth.

Mif was a son of a Muhammadiyah figure, while Fauziah was the daughter of a
Nahdatul Ulama leader. Having the same religion doesn’t mean they face no
obstacle since Muhammadiyah and Nahdatul Ulama are the two leading Islamic
organizations in Indonesia with differences in worship and holy days. These
differences will be a recipe for a wedding disaster; that is if they can overcome their
differences and love each other despite everything and everyone around them.

Mahfud Ikhwan was born in Lamongan. His previous novels are Ulid Tak Ingin ke Malaysia (2009)
and Lari Gung! Lari! (2011). His third novel, Kambing dan Hujan won the 2014 Jakar ta Ar ts Council
novel writing competition. As author and editor, he enjoys his time writing football reviews at
belakanggawang.blogspot.com and Bollywood movies reviews at dushmanduniyaka.wordpress.com.
He also coaches writing classes in Bengkel Menulis Gerakan Literasi Indonesia (GLI).
