The Little Death
of Kartosoewirjo

[ Kematian Kecil Kartosoewirjo ]

Fiction Catalogue

This poetry book tells the story of Kartosuwiryo, the figure who wanted to turn Indonesia into
an Islamic state. Kartosuwiryo was an Indonesian Muslim who led the Darul Islam rebellion
against the Indonesian government from 1949 to 1962, with the aim of establishing the Islamic
State of Indonesia based on the sharia law. Islam and the words of the Prophet became
Kartosuwiryo’s role models in carrying out his desire to establish an Islamic state. The poems
in this book display beautiful metaphors about the tumultuous ideas that might have appeared
in Kartosuwiryo’s mind during the last moments before his death sentence in the Seribu
Islands, Indonesia.

Triyanto Triwikromo was born in Salatiga, Central Java, and graduated from Diponegoro University in Semarang
with a master’s degree in literature. He was the winner of the 2009 Language Center Literary Award for the short
story collection, Ular di Mangkuk Nabi. His short stories have also been translated into Swedish. He works as a
lecturer in Creative Writing at his alma mater and as a managing editor at the daily newspaper Suara Merdeka.

strong conviction that all forms of poverty are not fate or some God-related tribulation, but that
they are the results of greed; the greed of those with political and capital powers.
