Raumanen, a prize-winning novel by Marianne Katoppo, tells the story of Monang,
a handsome but wayward Batak man, and Raumanen, a young Minahasa woman
who though educated and intelligent, also possessed a soft spot when it comes
to love. Marianne Katoppo deftly revealed in this novel that even in modern-day
Indonesia, matters of religion and ethnicity can significantly affect—for better or for
worse—the course of a couple’s relationship.

Marianne Katoppo was a theologian. With a master’s degree in hand, she continued her studies at the
Ecumenical Institute at Chateau de Bossey in Switzerland from which she graduated in 1992. Although
respected as a creative writer, Katoppo is better known as Asia’s first feminist theologian, and in addition
to Raumanen and other feminist-oriented work, she penned Compassionate and Free: An Asian Woman’s
Theology (1979) which has been translated into several languages. She died in 2007.

Mikael Johani is a poet, critic, and translator based in Jakarta. His works have been published in The
Johannesburg Review of Books, Ajar (Hanoi), Vice Indonesia, Kerja Tangan (Kuala Lumpur), Murmur
(Jakar ta), Selatan, Popteori, Vita Traductiva (Toronto), What’s Poetr y?, Bung!, and others. His English
translation of Gratiagusti Chananya Rompas’s poem “one by one the bodies died” won an honorable mention
from the 2018 Hawker Prize for Southeast Asian Poetry.

Mona Sylviana was born in 1972 in Bandung, West Java. Sylviana’s short stories have been printed throughout the
national media and have also been included in several anthologies with other writers. Her short story anthology,
Wajah Terakhir (The Last Face), was published in 2011.

Among the many distinctive qualities of Sylviana’s stories are scenes that are unapologetically beyond the pale.
Dirt, ugliness, and darkness—both physical and in the minds of her characters—appear without any attenuation.

Though Sylviana’s fictional world is not a safe place for women, they don’t always respond to situations as objects
or victims—they often take positions as “abjects” who wage confrontation against the accepted order.

In August 1883, a massive volcanic eruption destroyed two third of the Island of
Krakatau in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java. A tsunami wreaking havoc
across the region and causing countless deaths. Shock waves were recorded
around the world and ash from the eruptions affected global weather patterns for
many years to come.

Ever since these historic eruptions, Krakatau has been the subject of more than
a thousand reports and publications, both scholarly and literary. Now, the only
surviving account of the event written by an eyewitness has found its way into an
English translation. Written in the form of a syair, a classic Malay rhyming poem, The
Tale of Lampung Submerged shines a light on the widespread devastation in the
region and enriches our knowledge of the disaster.

Muhammad Saleh was a Malay writer. He was the eyewitness of the 1883’s Krakatau big eruption. Saleh was
by chance on a trip in Lampung when the disaster happened. He then went to Singapore and wrote The Tale of
Lampung Submerged there.

Museum of Pure Desire contains choice examples of contemporary Indonesian
poetry whose richness derives from their destruction of the constraints that
surround poetry. Nirwan Dewanto finds his source of inspiration anywhere, both in
works of nature as well as in such human creations as paintings, music, allegories,
photography, literature, and religious texts. None, however, are treated as points of
reference or symbols of something else. They stand on their own, with their own
individual character but, at the same time, raise questions about their original form
and lead the reader to unexpected vistas.

His poems challenge the reader to stop and reconsider their original impression and
to consider an entirely different interpretation altogether; they pull the reader into a
state of tension between extreme juxtaposition and hidden logic, between childlike
playfulness and calculated detachment. Nirwan expands the shape of Indonesian
poetry to infinite possibilities by exploring themes few poets have ever done before.

Nirwan Dewanto was born and raised in East Java. He served as chief editor of Kalam cultural journal (1994-
2004) and as editor of Koran Tempo newspaper’s literar y column (2002-2016). He has par ticipated in numerous
residency programs, including the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in the United States.
Nirwan’s publications include a collection of essays titled Senjakala Kebudayaan (Culture’s Twilight, 1994); two
collections of poetry: Jantung Lebah Ratu (The Queen Bee’s Heart, 2008) and Buli-Buli Lima Kaki (The Five-
Footed Jug, 2010), both of which received the Khatulistiwa Literary Award for poetry in the year in which they were
published.

Cala Ibi tells the story of Maya, a woman whose well-planned life was turned upside down by
her dreams of a mysterious woman named Maia.
This Maia invited the dreamer to experience things she had never imagined before. This is a
beautiful philosophical novel whose style is neither magical realism, nor baroque, nor localist.
It is a homage to an imaginary, extraterritorial mirror of Ternate—a legendary land of spice in
Eastern Indonesia; a state of mind more than a specific place.

Nukila Amal was born in Ternate in 1971. After attending the Bandung Academy of Tourism and worked in the
fields of finance and hospitality, she began pursuing a career as a writer. She published the novel Cala Ibi in 2003
and consequently published an award-winning short story collection titled Laluba in 2005.

This story happened around 1970 when I lived in Jayapura, a city in Irian Jaya (West Papua),
following my father who was assigned there as a soldier. In this lush island, I had a friend
named Sendy who owns a giant Cassowary, a bird that can not fly but can run really fast. We
used to play around its cage and told stories to each other. Unlike me, Sendy has curly hair. One
day, she told me a story that would then haunt me day and night: a story about a man who liked
to cut off the heads of straight-haired little girls.

The Screeching Cassowary is not just a novel about childhood memories. It is also a novel that
shows the complexities of the cultural encounters during the New Order era in Papua, an island
at the eastern border of Indonesia.

Nunuk Y. Kusmiana was born in Ponorogo, East Java, 1964. She was five years old when she followed the father
who was assigned to Jayapura, Papua in 1969. She moved to Yogyakarta to continue higher education in the
College of Tourism. She also got a scholarship from the Ford Foundation to study journalism. Her novel Lengking
Burung Kasuari (The Screeching Cassowary) is the winner of Jakarta Art Council Writing Contest 2016 and the
winner of Khatulistiwa Literar y Award 2017.

Earth Dance tells the story of four generations of Balinese women, with conflicts arising from
the demands of the caste system and personal desires. The narrator, Ida Ayu Telaga, tells us
how Balinese women wish to be beautiful and, ultimately, to find husbands from the higher
caste groups.

When the stubborn Telaga defies her mother’s wishes and marries a commoner, those around
her see this is as a step-down. Behind their thick glossy hair and golden complexions lies a web
of jealousy and intrigue, making Telaga wonder if this is all it means to be a woman.

Earth Dance has been translated into German and published under the title Erdentanz.

Oka Rusmini’s works have received many awards. In 2003, Earth Dance received a literary achievement award
from the Centre for Language Documentation at the Ministry of Education. She is frequently invited to national
and international literar y events. In 1997, she represented Indonesia at the ASE AN Writing Program, and in 2003,
she was invited to the 2003 Winternachten Festival held in Den Haag and Amsterdam. She was also invited to be a
guest writer at the University of Hamburg, Germany.

In Bali, a person’s life is predetermined according to his or her caste. It is impossible for a
Sudra woman, the lowest caste in Balinese society, to marry a man from the highest caste,
Brahmana.

In Sagra’s story, a Brahmana woman fell in love with a Sudra man, but then she went on to
marry a fellow Brahmana even though she never let go of her romantic relationship with the
Sudra. Meanwhile, her husband the Brahmana man fell in love with another woman from the
Sudra caste. These four people managed to keep their rectangular romance secret for years
until death separated them.

Oka Rusmini’s works have received numerous awards. In 2013-2014, Saiban received Khatulistiwa Literary
Award. In 2003, Earth Dance–her first novel–received a literary achievement award from the Centre for Language
Documentation at the Ministry of Education.

Oka has written four collections of poetry, Monolog Pohon (1997), Patiwangi (2003), Warna Kita (2008) and

Her novel Jatisaba won the 2010 Jakarta Arts Council novel writing competition. Her short story collection
Lengkingan Viola Desingan Peluru (Humming Violins and Whistling Bullets, 2012) was selected Best Literary Work
of 2013 by the Language Center of Yogyakarta. Ramayda was named as an Emerging Writer at the 2013 Ubud
Writers and Readers Festival. She is a lecturer at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University.

Pingkan Folds the Distance is the sequel to Rain in June.

Pingkan had gone to Japan to continue her study while Sarwono stayed in Jakarta to continue
his life as a lecturer. Unfortunately, while they were separated, Sarwono had to be admitted to
the intensive care unit. His condition forced Pingkan to fly back to Indonesia.

Sarwono had become anxious about their relationship because in Japan there was a young
man named Katsuo who fell in love with Pingkan. But Katsuo was not sure that he wanted to
pursue a serious relationship with Pingkan. Katsuo had told his mother that he would marry
her chosen girl back home in Okinawa. On the one hand, Katsuo wanted to take Pingkan while

On November 12, 1991, the Indonesian military forces opened fire on protestors in Dili, East
Timor. Hundreds were killed, and the reporting of this massacre has sparked international
outrage. In Jakarta, a cover-up began immediately, and the Indonesian mass media was
warned to tow the official line. Seno Gumira Ajidarma refused to do so and transformed
documentary evidence into semi-fiction form and published it as a novel.

This novel is a triptych; the first two of which—“Jazz” and “Perfume”—should be easily recognized

Having published more than 30 books since the 1980s, award-winning author Seno Gumira Ajidarma is one of
Indonesia’s most prolific authors. Novelist, short story writer, and essayist, Seno’s work often both document

advocate of free speech and freedom of publication, writing about sensitive issues including the military violence

The Dwarf Child Herding the Wind is Sindhunata’s reimagining of the Ramayana epic. Originally
published as part of Kompas’ Special Sunday Edition lineup, Sindhunata compiled his series
into a single book which quickly became a bestseller and eventually a textbook for Indonesian
literature. First published in 1983, the book has been revised and republished many times since.

Dr. Gabriel Possenti Sindhunata, S.J. is a Catholic pastor who received his doctorate from the Munich University
of Philosophy in 1992. His thesis focused on the messianic hope in Javanese society. Sindhunata also worked
as a journalist for Kompas daily newspaper, writing articles on football and various cultural issues. A well-
known author, his most famous work is The Dwarf Child Herds the Wind. He is the founder of the PANGOENTJI
community, which is actively involved in arts and cultural events. Sindhunata currently lives in Kolese Santo
Ignatius, Yogyakarta.
