CRICKET. – A match was to have been played in Hatfield Park on Saturday, vs. Cockfosters, but the wicket, owing to the recent rain, was so sodden that the match had to be scratched. Herts Advertiser - 28 May 1898 HATFIELD v. MR H W STRIDE'S XI This popular annual fixture was played in beautiful weather in Hatfield Park on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and went first to the wickets, but owing to the excellent bowling of Hardy Wells and Ireton Horsey, and the capital fielding of the whole team, they were only able to put together the comparatively small total of 36. With an apparently easy task before them, the home team commenced their innings, but it was soon evident that the bowling of Forrester and Dixon was not to be trifled with, and so deadly were these two trundlers, that seven out of the team failed to score, and the whole side was dismissed directly after lunch for the paltry total of 30. In the second venture, the visitors batted more successfully and compiled 96, thus leaving Hatfield 103 runs to get to win and just about an hour in which to do it. This they failed to do, and the visitors consequently obtained a welldeserved victory by six runs on the first innings. Mr A L Stride entertained both teams to luncheon and tea in a spacious tent on the ground, and the day’s cricket was greatly enjoyed by a large number of spectators. MR H W STRIDE’S XI This match was played in Hatfield Park on Saturday, when the ill luck which has followed the home club so far this season was again manifest, and the visitors won a well-deserved victory by 72 runs on the first innings. Mr Stride’s eleven went first to the wickets, and by excellent batting compiled 143. To this, the home team responded with the poor total of 71, Edward Wells (19 not out), Branton Bamford (13), and John Cornish (11) being the only batsmen to make any stand against the bowling of Forrester and Dixon. Being in a minority of over 60, the homesters had to follow on, and had scored 46 with the loss of seven wickets when the clock struck the hour of retiring. Mr A L Stride entertained the teams to luncheon and tea, which was served in a marquee on the ground. The weather was delightfully fine, and a large number of spectators, including several veterans of the game, thoroughly enjoyed the cricket.
