NEASDENA match between teams representing these clubs was played in the park on Thursday and resulted in a victory for Hatfield by an innings and 60 runs. This result was mainly due to Mr Charlie Wheeler, whose batting, though far from fruitless, was nevertheless a good exhibition. He added 73 runs, consisting of 10 threes, 11 twos, and 22 singles to the total. But it was his fine bowling which proved disastrous to his opponents. Wheeler clean bowled four in one over, the last three in successive balls. Mr Wood, Holwell Hyde, occupied the chair and was supported by a goodly number of members of the club and friends (Mr R H Wells occupying the vice-chair). 301

An excellent spread was provided by Mr Kerby, proprietor of the One Bell Inn. Mr Kerby deserves very great praise for the admirable manner in which the dinner was served, especially all the eatables from his own house (a distance of at least a hundred yards) to the Hall, and at the same time keep them hot, is considered. The tables having been cleared, the loyal toasts were given and enthusiastically received. - Song, “Bonnie Mary of Argyle,” Mr C Smith, - The Chairman, in proposing “Prosperity to the Hatfield Cricket Club,” said that a few years ago he thought that cricket in Hatfield was going to the dogs. From what he saw that night, however, and from the records of the last two years he now believed that the prospects of the cricket club were once more brightening up, and before long they would have as good a team of players as ever they had. The success of the club depended in a great measure on the young blood, and he hoped before long to hear of a great many young players having joined the club - (applause). - Cornet solo, “Terence’s farewell,” Mr C Lambert. The Hon. Secretary (Mr Elmsall), in responding to the toast, said he was glad to be able to say that during the last two years they had progressed very favourably. Last year they played twelve matches, out of which they won three and lost nine. This year they played eleven matches, six were won, one drawn, and the other four were lost. Years ago Hatfield was noted for its cricket; why should it not be so again? The fact was, as the Chairman had remarked, they wanted young members to join them, and it rested with each individual member, who wished to see cricket flourish to induce young players to join the club. In former years it was the custom to offer a bat for the best batting average and a ball for the best bowling average. He hoped to see that custom revived. The accounts of the club were in a very flourishing condition. They had received subscriptions amounting to £32, and when all bills were paid, there would be a balance in hand of between £10 and £11 - (applause). - Song, “Something went wrong with the works,” Mr G Elliott. Mr Elmsall proposed the health of the President, Viscount Cranborne, M.P., and the vice-presidents. - The Chairman responded. Song, “Somebody’s coming when the dewdrops fall,” Mr J W Richardson. Among the remaining toasts were “The officers of the club,” coupled with the name of Mr W Groom (the captain), proposed by the Chairman; “National sports,” coupled with the name of Mr R H Wells, proposed by Mr J Cox, and responded to by Mr Wells; “The visitors,” coupled with the names of Messrs Bamford and Joseph Canham, proposed by Mr A Whitby and responded to by Messrs Bamford and Canham. - Mr A E Sharp proposed “Absent friends.” He said he was sorry that so many of the old members were absent, and especially was he sorry for the absence of the old secretary, Mr F Hankin, who had worked hard for the success of the club a great many years. The Secretary had referred to the old custom of giving an average bat. He wished to say that he should be very pleased to give a bat to the member with the best batting average next year - (cheers). He also hoped to see next year more whole day and less half-day matches played. With reference to this Mr W Whitby explained that the half-day matches were arranged to suit the majority of the members, and also that a great number of clubs round about were unable to play wholeday matches. Mr Elmsall also explained that while it was comparatively easy to get teams to play half-day matches, it was very difficult to get teams for whole-day matches. Mr R H Wells proposed the health of Dr Hall, who briefly responded. The 302

Chairman proposed the health of the umpire, and Mr Swift responded. Mr Elmsall proposed the health of the groundsman, and Mr C Lambert responded. The Chairman proposed the health of Sergeant Cain, Mr Elmsall proposed the health of the host, and Mr J Kerby briefly replied. Songs were contributed by Messrs W Hart, W Whitby, W Swift, B Bamford, J Green, J Cox, G Dunham, M de C Elmsall, A Whitby, J Kerby, B Pateman, C Wheeler, R du F Bryans, H Diddams, Ledger, Bamford and G Elliott. Recitations by Mr Ledger and some clever sleight of hand tricks with cards and money by the chairman. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman for presiding, and to Mr T Gregory for his services at the piano. The proceedings were brought to a close with the National Anthem, and “Auld Lang Syne.” Herts Advertiser - 12 October 1889 CRICKET CLUB.– The annual general meeting of the Club was held at the One Bell Inn on Monday. The chair was taken by Mr M de C Elmsall, and he was supported by a large number of members. The following gentlemen were chosen to form the committee for the following year: Messrs H Broom, J Cox, J Groom, F J Hankin, H H Hankin, W Horsey, J Richardson, A Whitby, T Blinko, and W Groom. It was resolved that Mr Elmsall be captain for the season, and Mr J H Wane treasurer. It was decided that the opening match should be played on Wednesday, 7th May and that the teams be chosen by Mr Elmsall and Mr R H Wells. It was also decided that the annual club dinner should be held at the One Bell in the evening after the match. On the proposal of Mr F J Hankin, seconded by Mr J Kerby, it was resolved to buy a new roller for the use of the club. Mr C Lambert was unanimously elected groundsman for the season. The Secretary submitted ten challenges from different clubs and these were all accepted. Herts Advertiser - 05 April 1890 HATFIELD V. Thursday in beautiful weather, with the exception of a smart shower just about the time for drawing the stumps. The wicket was a good one, and the play was throughout of a thoroughly interesting character, the fortunes of the game undergoing various changes during the day. The visitors put a very strong team into the field, included in their eleven being Almond, the Essex professional, Pearce and Westell from St Albans, and Turner, who formerly played for Gloucestershire. The home side was a fully representative one, the Rev. C J Marshall, who captained the team, being the eleventh man to go to the wickets. Hatfield won the toss and commenced batting with Almond and Pearce, and only one had been scored when the former was bowled by W H Nicholls. At 12 Westell was run out before he had scored, but the partnership of the Rev. Mr Lofts and Pearce was most useful, 48 runs being put on before a separation was effected. The fourth wicket fell at 62, the fifth at 63, the sixth at 64, and the seventh at 81, and it appeared probable that the innings would rapidly be finished off, but Lattimore and the Rev. E Lombard offered some resistance to the bowling and carried the score to 116 before they were parted. The last two wickets fell at the same total, and it was thought that the home side would have a comparatively easy task in compiling the requisite number of runs. Dunster and the Rev. H Hodgson opened the venture, and at five the first reverse occurred, Dunster being sent back by Turner without scoring, whilst at seven the same bowler disturbed Mansfield’s wickets. Fish upon coming into bat quickly became busy, but at 28 he was caught by Turner off Almond for 11, and Sharpe, who followed, made 11 in a patient style and was then caught at the wicket by Elmsall off Almond, Mr Hodgson just previously having been bowled by Blinko after making 39 in attacking style. G Nicholls, who was batting very freely, was joined by H D Marshall, who was quickly bowled by Pearce, and Hammond and W H Nicholls also had a short stay, the total at the fall of the eighth wicket being 106. With ten runs required to win, Skerman joined Nicholls and wisely played a strictly defensive game, whilst his partner hit. Every ball was watched with keen interest, and every good stroke applauded, and as the score gradually rose, the hopes of the home side were increased. Almond and Blinko did their best with the ball, and the fielding was very close, but the batsmen remained together until the match was won, a hard drive by Skerman being the winning hit. The last wicket added eight runs, the total of the innings being 126. Upon going in a second time Pearce and Westell for the visitors gave a good display of hitting, but none of the others were comfortable with the bowling, and at the drawing of stumps 97 had been scored for nine wickets. On Friday, Hatfield met the Three Counties Asylum, at Arlesey, and were defeated (176 – 73 and 15). 1891 - 1900 HATFIELD CC.– The annual general meeting of the club was held at the One Bell Inn on Monday, under the presidency of the Secretary and Captain, Mr M de C Elmsall. There was a fair attendance of members. The chief business was to reelect the officers of the club; Viscount Cranborne, MP, was re-elected president, and the vice-presidents were re-elected en bloc, as were likewise the committee. Mr Elmsall expressed a wish to resign his post as captain, but was persuaded to reconsider his intention, and eventually he was re-elected captain, and Mr J H Wane was unanimously re-elected treasurer. Several new members were elected, and a good card of fixtures was arranged to be played during the season. HARPENDENThis match was played on Friday in Hatfield Park, and after a most exciting and capital game ended in a win for Harpenden by five wickets. For the winners, every credit was due to Golds for his most effective bowling. Lattimore and Odell were well supported by others in the batting line in the second innings at the critical time. For the losers, Pearce played his usual sound cricket, and Fisk was most effective with the ball and bat. Harpenden, in their second innings, had only 55 minutes to play to make the necessary 76 runs, which they succeeded in doing with a few minutes to spare. HATFIELDThe Hatfield Cricket Club is not reckoned to be a particularly powerful organisation, but it managed to give a bad drubbing to Luton Montrose on Saturday. The Montrose have defeated better clubs than Hatfield, and after a season’s practice to be beaten by an innings is somewhat of a takedown. The Montrose have defeated better clubs than Hatfield, and after a season’s practice to be beaten by an innings is somewhat of a takedown.” The remark as to beating better clubs will scarcely apply to the present season’s performance of the Montrose, as a glance at their averages will show for they have won the unenviable distinction of having been beaten in every match save one this year - and that one was drawn. I have been accused - somewhat unfairly too - of taking opportunities to fling stones at the Montrose, but I nonetheless heartily wish them better luck next time. This result was almost entirely due to the brothers Raincock. In Hatfield’s first innings, C Raincock took five wickets (all clean bowled) at the cost of only 11 runs; and in their second innings he obtained a similar number of wickets for 19 runs. In the first place, we are financially on a much sounder basis than we have been for some time past. We are completely out of debt and have a prospect of being able to execute some much-needed improvements in the course of the next year. This desirable state of things is largely due to the increase in our numbers. There were only sixty members of the club at the beginning of this season; now there are one hundred and seven. In other respects, too, we have no cause to complain. We have played eleven matches, winning five, losing five, and one being drawn. This is fairly satisfactory. Nevertheless, those who have watched the play of the Hatfield XI will probably agree that we very seldom play up to our proper form. This is partly due to an unaccountable desire which seizes so many members of our teams to hit the first three balls that they receive out of the ground, a desire which is usually disastrous both to themselves and to their side. There has been on more than one occasion a certain slackness observable towards the end of a match. In spite of all this, there is fair ground for self-congratulation concerning our play, and a very noticeable improvement has taken place in all departments of the game, especially in fielding, since the commencement of the season. Two experiments have been tried this year. The committee have conferred upon eight members of the Club the privilege of wearing upon their caps badges in recognition of the excellence of their play and their other services to the Club. It is hoped that the committee will be able to confer at least four more badges before the end of the season. The other experiment has been to provide on every Saturday afternoon that the Club shall either play a game or a match. Both experiments have been successful, and the latter one has given a considerable impetus to cricket in Hatfield. Some, indeed, think that more games and consequently fewer matches would give opportunities for play to a large number of the younger members of the Club. Unquestionably, that is a desirable end, but it is very difficult to refuse the challenge of neighbouring clubs, and of course, the interest in the result of a match is always greater than the interest in a game. Perhaps next year some means may be found of increasing the opportunities of play without diminishing the number of matches. Hatfield Parish Church Magazine - 1893 318

HATFIELDIn splendid weather, Barnet met Hatfield on the home ground at Underhill, and easily beat them by 87 runs and three wickets in hand. A start was made soon after three. Cartwright was unable to play, and in the absence of Turner, who had twisted his ankle in the week, C S B Higgs captained the home team. Henry Broom and George Elliott made a good start for the visitors, to the bowling of the vice-captain and Holroyd. Twenty-two were soon registered, but at that total Higgs clean bowled Broom. Bell was the newcomer, and he kept up his wicket while Elliott hit, and brought on Hancock, who separated them by bowling the first-named. The second wicket had added 27. Elliott was the next to leave, the left-hander bowling down his leg stump; his 27 was the outcome of clean and vigorous hitting. Harrison, who had succeeded Higgs, quickly dismissed the next two men, and Hancock soon got two more wickets. The end came shortly, Carter losing his wicket in attempting an impossible run, and Langridge putting one into point’s hands. The innings closed for 75. After a short interval, S Higgs and Steer opened the batting for the home side. Runs came fast from the outset, but at 19 John Johnson got one past Steer, and Parsonage, with hands bruised from wicket-keeping, fell at once to the same bowler. C S B Higgs made some very good hits, and sent 50 up, at which total he put a loose ball from Langridge into third man’s hands. Ash followed, and 17 were added before he was bowled by Carter, the ball before having caught him a severe blow in the face. Dresser then joined Higgs, who was playing a good, steady game, and the Hatfield score was soon passed. With the score at 80, Higgs twisted his knee, and Pank went out to run for him; nine runs later, his innings closed. His 33 were compiled in a little over an hour. Pank was soon bowled by a shooter, and Harrison failed. The seventh wicket fell at 112. Chapman and Dresser then played out time, hitting the bowling to all parts of the field, and in a short time adding 50 321

runs. The latter took out his bat for an excellent 56, the best innings he has played this year. Barnet has now won six matches out of nine, which is not a bad start for its first season. On Saturday, the 28th inst., a cricket match was played in Hatfield Park, between Hatfield and Cockfosters Cricket Clubs, in which Mr Charles Lambert (acting captain of the Hatfield Cricket Club), for the third time as a bowler, took the whole of the wickets, his analysis being:– Fourteen runs, ten wickets, eleven overs, six maidens, seven bowled. Mr Lambert first achieved this feat on August 17, 1877, in a match between Hatfield and Mr Butler’s Eleven (Young Hertfordshire), on which occasion he bowled the whole team; his second performance being on August 14, 1891, in a match between Hatfield and Harpenden. Mr Lambert’s age is forty-five years. He is (as many of your readers know) tennis marker to the Marquess of Salisbury and brother to the ex-champion tennis player. I am, Sir, your obedient servant, Scorer, Hatfield, Herts, July 30. The Standard - 31 July 1894 HATFIELD V. The match proved interesting and amusing, the Fire Brigade representatives playing in top-boots, white trousers, and high hats, one of the latter having been used in a similar match in 1854. The town side made 120 runs, and the Fire Brigade 96 for eight wickets. After the match the teams adjourned to the One Bell for the annual dinner, the usual good spread being provided by host Lewis. Mr Walter Whitby occupied the chair, and Mr James Gray in the vice-chair. Toasts to the “Queen and the Royal Family,” “The captain of the club (Lord R Cecil),” “The Fire Brigade,” “The Hatfield Cricket Club,” and “The host and hostess” were drunk with much enthusiasm. A good supply of songs, duets, quartets etc. was provided by the members. An interesting item on the table was three cricket balls, which had been presented to Mr C Lambert at various periods for taking 10 wickets in one match, and a fourth ball was presented to Mr Lambert by Mr J Gray for being at the top of the averages this season. 325

Bamford and Blinko went in first, and both at once commenced hitting with the utmost freedom, runs coming at a tremendous pace, and for a short time, it seemed as if the necessary runs would be made. However, with the total at 110, the partnership was dissolved, Bamford being caught at point, Broom was dismissed with the first ball he received, and Blinko retired with the total still at 110. Hatfield in their second innings scored 65. Hertfordshire Mercury - 12 June 1897 HATFIELD V. MR H W STRIDE'S XI This match was played in Hatfield Park on Saturday and proved interesting and exciting throughout. The visitors were the first to go in, but owing to the excellent bowling of Alfred Whitby, Manasseh Johnson, Hardy Wells and H Curtis, they were disposed of for 56 runs, Hatfield commenced their innings with great hopes of easily beating the small score made by their opponents, but it was soon seen that they could not take liberties with the bowling of S H S Haynes and Forrester, and they failed to reach the total made against them, being all out for 46. The visitors in their second venture fared no better, and were got rid of for 54, and thus set Hatfield 65 runs to get to win. Runs came very slowly, and wickets fell very quickly, and when the last man (Whitby) went in, 12 runs were still wanted, with but very few minutes to get them. Whitby, however, had a good partner in Ireton Horsey, and both playing careful cricket obtained the necessary runs just before the call of time, and the home side thus won a splendid game by one wicket and six runs.
