WESTMINSTER CONSERVATIVE ASSOCIATION HATFIELD 219, WESTMINSTER CONS 27. Hatfield won by 192 runs. After the speeches, the cricket match, which was played for a handsome silver cup given by Mr A W Beckham, of London, and Mr Dagg, Lord Salisburys’s steward, was resumed. At the conclusion of the match, it was found that the Hatfield Club had won a very easy victory. Mr Beckham, in handing the cup to Mr Dagg, expressed the hope that next year the Association might be able to bring down a team which would oblige the Hatfield Club to look out for their laurels. Mr Dagg in a few suitable remarks presented the cup to the Hatfield Club. Hertfordshire Mercury - 07 August 1875 262

Owing to a very wet morning, it did not commence till nearly one o’clock. The Hertford men went in first and quickly lost two wickets without scoring, and the third fell with the total at 8. Skerman then joined Hughes, and both played a good defence. Changes were made in the bowling, but the score rose to 32 when Skerman was run out for 11. Titchmarsh came next and soon began to score, but at 48 Hughes was bowled for a patient innings of 23. Luncheon then intervened. After that repast, three wickets fell quickly, and the total was at 60 when Cheshire faced Titchmarsh, and both playing well, brought on several changes in the bowling, and the score was raised to 104, when Titchmarsh was bowled for a good innings of 41. Cheshire played in good style for 15 (not out), and the innings closed for 106. The Hatfield team then went in, and the first wicket fell for 7, but on William Lambert joining George Clifford, the latter hit away merrily until the total was at 51, when he was out for a hard-hitting but lucky innings of 44. William Lambert made 22, but the remaining batsmen could make no stand against the bowling of Hughes and Titchmarsh, and the innings finished just before the time for drawing stumps for 74. Herts Advertiser - 02 May 1885 BANK HOLIDAY – The day was one of the most wretched that can be well imagined, and the number of visitors to Hatfield was consequently very small for a holiday time. A match had been arranged to be played on this day between Hatfield Cricket Club and Wheathampstead. It was thought at the time for pitching the stumps that no play would take place, but the rain clearing off for a little time, the game began soon after twelve o'clock, with Hatfield at the wickets. Play had hardly commenced, however, when the rain again started, continued almost without intermissions during the whole of the afternoon. Notwithstanding this, however, the Hatfield team stopped at the wickets through their innings, which closed for 61, and play was then abandoned, as there seemed no prospect of the weather improving. The Hertford team went in first, and at the commencement, it seemed as though the scoring would not be very heavy, but on Messrs C E Wodehouse and W H Nicholls getting together, both batsmen hit very hard and freely, the former scoring 51 and the latter 32. Three others made double figures, and the innings closed just before lunch for 155. After lunch, the Hatfield men went in, to the bowling of Messrs Nicholls and Fisher, but their batting was very feeble, and they only made 59, Arthur Dagg being the highest scorer with 17. In the second innings, they made 87, of which Charles Bradshaw with 26, and Percy Dagg with 22, were the chief contributors. The Hertford were thus victorious by an innings and nine runs to spare. Score:– 290
